From your Servant Leader: July 14, 2016 There is "new" and then there is "new to me" in so many areas of our lives. I recently bought a home in St. Louis that was originally built during the St. Louis World's Fair more than 100 years ago. I love that the home has a good foundation, beautiful inlaid woodworking, classic designs and overall a very good infrastructure. I also appreciate that owners over the years made some changes. When this home was built the owners had a carriage house for the horse and not a garage. Heating was by coal and fireplaces, and lighting was by gas or lamp oil. Air conditioning? Open a window. I'm not really sure there was indoor plumbing! Needless to say, David W. Barringer, CEO such a home today wouldn't sell very well, and so the updates and improvements were more than desired, they became necessary. Have you tried ordering a home coal delivery lately? When we enter into a new organization, we face the similar challenges of wanting to be part of an established, well-run operation but also one that keeps up with the times. Many a nonprofit and religious organization has struggled with change. There are always both those who want nothing to change, and others who seem to want things changed so much we would wonder if the resulting organization even resembles the original one. Read more Yours in Christ, Dave To Top Campaign to fund Friends of the Poor® Grant Program Your compassion today helps show God's love to those in need. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is in need of additional funding for our Friends of the Poor Grant Program to help the millions of women, men and children who need assistance this summer. Will you give now -- whatever you can share -- to help us reach our goal of $80,000? In the summer months, families in poverty or difficult circumstances across our nation will need electricity for air conditioning. Children who are home from school will need meals at lunchtime. And when emergencies arise - medical or otherwise - we need to be ready to care for each suffering individual, no matter their faith, ethnic background, gender, or political opinions. Through our Friends of the Poor Grant Program, the National Council provides direct support to local communities from 4,400 Conferences throughout America. In fact, just last year, grant dollars were awarded to: * Provide housing assistance to families that can't afford to pay their rent, due to a lack of jobs in a town where unemployment has increased by 100% in only one year. * Assist with utility bills for individuals who struggle to make ends meet in an area where over 24% of the households fall beneath the poverty line. * Deliver food to the homes of some of the poorest families in the United States, including one town where over 50% of the people are currently unemployed. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has changed hundreds of people's lives in these communities and many more, but the demand for similar services in areas across the United States continues to grow. Only with your support can the Friends of the Poor Grant Program be there this summer to make a difference. Your donation can keep the air conditioning on for an elderly person, help an individual who can't afford a place to sleep, or provide food for a family in their time of need. You can change the lives of these people today by making a donation. Please give your generous gift now, and thank you for joining with us in meeting this urgent need. You are seeing the face of Christ in those we serve. Help people in need this summer by clicking here. To Top Q: In continuation to the answer provided in last week's question #2, are there any general guidelines on interviewing our friends in need? Is there a guide for interviewers on do's or questions not to ask? A: Guidance for home visits and interviews can be found in two new books on the Extension Portal website under the category of Training: Vincentian Life: Conference, and Vincentian Life: Member. Q: Conference associate members typically do not attend most meetings. Can associate members who are Catholic vote? A: An associate member is someone who helps us with our works of service. He/she may or may not be Catholic. While not expected, he/she may attend meetings regularly if they choose to. An associate member cannot vote and cannot be an officer of the Conference. Many Conferences throughout the country have associate members. A couple of common examples are: 1) a non-Catholic spouse of an active member who helps out, and 2) someone who wants to help by maintaining the food in the pantry but doesn't want to take part in meetings or other activities of the Conference. How do we ask forgiveness from those we offend because we haven't invited them to the table? Pope Francis recently made a groundbreaking statement about mercy. "I believe that the church not only must say it's sorry ... to this person that is gay that it has offended," (June 26, 2016, Returning from Armenia). The Pope didn't say to simply tolerate people who don't look like us, act like us, or worship like us. He didn't say for us to just stop scowling at a same sex couple walking down the street. He didn't suggest that we forgive people for being homosexual. He said we should apologize to them for our sins of judgement. Francis suggests that we have sinned by not reaching out; by not being a more welcoming and diverse Church. This reaffirms his previously stated view reflecting the Church's position that homosexual acts are sinful, but homosexual orientation is not, in his famous "Who am I to judge" quote in 2013. The Bylaws of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul state that we "actively seeks to recruit and retain volunteers without regard to race, creed (with exception to active members), color, gender, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, veteran status, national origin, age or physical handicap." Actively seek...not just wait for diversity to come to us. Our sins often involve something we've done to offend another. Pope Francis is reminding us, in this year of Mercy, that we also sin when we don't do something we should be doing; when we don't welcome all to the table. Texas regarding the President's Executive orders on deferred action for immigrant children and parents and by the continuing gridlock in Congress. Moreover, campaign rhetoric is not helping to illuminate the real issues. The passage of immigration reform legislation by the U.S. Congress will only happen if ordinary citizens such as us get involved. Join the SVdP webinar Thursday, July 21 at 3:00 p.m. (EDT) as we discuss how we can move immigration reform to the top of the national agenda. Learn more about the Society's recently updated Immigration Position Paper, the impact of the Supreme Court's decision on immigration families, the prospects for reform, the Church's teaching on welcoming the stranger and constructive actions we can take as Vincentians. To Top Disaster Services Division Update Why helping West Virginia with Disaster Recovery is Critical to Systemic Change in the State The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Disaster Services Division works to support our Regions, Councils and Conferences in helping families to recovery from major disasters. As part of the many programs that we offer, disaster case management is the most critical. We train Vincentians on how to help families navigate the various federal, state and local programs. We also provide a national tracking system through the Coordinated Assistance Network and we help our Vincentians with understanding the role of the local long term recovery committees. Vincentians can then advocate for those they serve to local community leaders, FEMA and state officials. For example, in a case of major floods, is it better to advocate for the family to get a buyout of their property by the county/state rather than to stay in a floodplain? Will there be living wage jobs available, once the community is rebuilt? These and many other questions must be answered and our Vincentians work with families up to a two year period, helping as a life coach for recovery. The state of W.V. was hit with a thousand year flood on June 23, 2016. Before the flood, many families in the state were living at or below the federal poverty level and the disaster has now put them in dire straits. The quote below from the governor of West Virginia details the extent of the flooding. "The flooding we experienced Thursday and into [Friday] (referencing the June 23 Floods) is among the worst in a century for some parts of the state," said Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (D), who declared a state of emergency in 44 of West Virginia's 55 counties Friday. SVdP-DSD is working with the Council of Wheeling, the Eastern Region, W.V. VOAD and state and federal officials to develop a strategic long term recovery Plan that will address some of the critical issues for the state's recovery. Elizabeth Disco-Shearer and W.V. To Top Knights of Columbus Urges Prayers for Healing Following a week of violence across the United States, the Knights of Columbus has called for a novena of prayer to heal the wounds and divisions afflicting this country. Knights, their families and all people of good will are encouraged to join in the novena (nine days of prayer) that will run from July 14-22 by praying St. Francis of Assisi's Prayer for Peace: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. "The violent episodes of the past week have shocked the conscience of our country," said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. "Through this prayer, each of us has the opportunity to help transcend hatred and violence by personally committing to the concepts of love of neighbor, peace and forgiveness that are central to an authentic embrace of Christianity. It is our hope that, from coast to coast, those who pray this prayer will become true instruments of peace." Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore also urged people to join this prayer campaign: "During this Year of Mercy, let us pray for an end to violence and senseless killings," he said. "Through our prayers and good works, may we help build a society that is merciful, just and peaceful."
