Our area has been fortunate to only experience low 90 degree temperatures so far this summer. The unusually wet weather thus far has certainly help with that. I have submitted a couple pictures from our last Castroville cruise night that had a very good number of Pontiacs in attendance. Mike Becker, Thomas and Candace Rauschuber, Christine Hummel, Greg Howerton, and I brought out our Pontiacs on June 12. I also counted about six other Pontiacs that were nonmembers out at Castroville as well. Several club members will be hitting the road soon to attend our yearly and 43rd annual POCI national convention in Louisville, Kentucky. This is one of the biggest gatherings of Pontiacs in one place and all are your fellow club members. I hope everyone has been keeping up with our International club happenings through the monthly published magazine Smoke Signals. I would like to encourage members to log onto www.poci.org to take full advantage of club news and articles written by our knowledgeable staff and editors. There has been quite a few events happening the last few weeks since our last meeting. Wayne Christ has organized a cruise to Dicks Garage in San Marcos and another Castroville cruise. I will have updates to these and many other events. Our next meeting will be Tuesday July 14, 7:00 pm at Salsallito’s Mexican restaurant. I hope to see you there! PONTI-YAKKIN 1 Castroville Cruise Night PONTI-YAKKIN 2 CARS I'VE SEEN, DRIVEN AND OWNED (First of a Series) Submitted By: Frank A. Escamilla It has been more years than I want to admit since I joined POCI and the Chapter, and I have wanted to write an article for the newsletter for some time now. In 1982 I was driving my '67 Bonneville (more on that car later) when I was working as a Tech Rep for a then major corporation. After a service stop at the Bexar County Courthouse, someone had placed a POCI brochure on the Bonneville. A Pontiac club? This sounds interesting! Several months later, it was around early summer of 1983, I attended a small car show at the Texas Transportation Museum on Wetmore Rd. It was there where I met Rick Houck and Brooks Burt and they told me that they had just formed a local chapter of POCI. After putting 2 and 2 together, I learned that it was Brooks who put the brochure on the Bonneville. Soon after that show, I joined POCI and the chapter, then named the South Central Texas Chapter. The logo was "Deep in the Heart of Texas". This concludes the introduction, the "meat and potatoes" will be in future articles. Recent Car Shows Submitted by Troy Smalley As Alfred has mentioned in his article this month the temperatures have been great recently for the car shows in the area. I have been to two of the local shows since our last meeting and wanted to share some pictures taken of some other Pontiac’s in the area. The first show was in Luling, TX in conjunction with their Watermelon Thump Festival held June 28th. During the show I saw two other Pontiacs, one was a 1937 Pontiac and the other was a 1980 Trans AM. I finished 2nd behind the 1980 Trans AM in the 1971 – 1990 Original/Restored category and after you see the pictures you’ll understand why. It was a beautifully restored car owned by Garry Hurta from Pflugerville, TX. I spoke with him and his wife about our club for a bit after the show and sent him a copy of last month’s newsletter so they would have more information on our club if they were interested in joining. I also told them about our show in Seguin at the end of September. The other 1937 is owned by Colt Smith, who I have forgotten where in Texas he was from. I spoke with him about our club and sent him a copy of last month’s newsletter as well. His car was parked two spots down from where I parked for the show. I don’t recall him winning an award for his category but still was impressed with his car and hope you are too when you see the pictures below. The next show I went to was just this past weekend in my town of Cibolo. One of the local Mexican restaurants held a show judged by the participants for the top 30 cars. I saw a 1965 GTO in stunning shape that was acquired only three weeks before the show by Sonny and Debbie Jones from Hondo. He brought the GTO and she brought a 1955 Corvette that was flawless. I told them about the club meetings at Salsallito’s Mexican restaurant and also that we usually have a good showing at the Castroville cruise nights if they were interested. While I was talking to them a couple from Alabama inquired about looking for Pontiac parts. Specifically, front fenders and bumpers for a 1971 Grandville. I told them I would mention to the club and directed them to the POCI website for more possible contacts. They said they were heading back to Alabama this past Monday after visiting some family in the local area but I do have their contact information available if anyone in our club has these parts available for sale Well I’ve rambled on long enough so check out the pictures that follow and I hope to see you at the meeting on Tuesday! Oh did I mention, Elvie and I also participated in the Round Rock, TX Fourth of July parade with the Bat City Fiero Club out of Austin.
