Happy reading. http://alistairlyne.com The Wild Desert Horses of Namibia Driving through south-western Namibia lets you breathe wide open space. Long, straight roads lead through flat, desolate plains where you see far into a distant pastel horizon. Low mountain peaks stack away into the late afternoon haze. This southern African country is a land of wide open landscapes; and If you head west on the E1 highway towards the coastal town of Luderitz, you pass the tiny town of Aus nestled in a narrow mountain range. From this point on the desert takes on a more barren feel. Sparse grassland gives way to the hard, stony Namib plains. Open and flat with very little vegetation, the summer highs are over 45 degrees and it never rains more than 50 mm a year. On this long road to the cold Atlantic coast, the only turn off in miles is north to Garub pan. Here, not far off the tar road, are water troughs built in the desert and fed from a specially drilled borehole nearby. There is also a viewing hide, where tourists can try catch a glimpse of the famous feral horses. Wild, scruffy, wiry and tough; these mysterious wild animals are unique in that they have evolved to survive in this most desolate of lands. Theres a group of horses gathered drinking at the water. Incredible. Surprise becomes elation as small herds trickle slowly in through the speckled desert scrub. More than thirty in all arrive to drink and mill around the water troughs. Some are surprisingly active in the midday sun. Running around, rolling rough, face and all into the hot sand. A foal, young and still fluffy, splashes clumsy hoofs into the water, startling those drinking. A stallion circles to the side on his own, prancing proud and kicking dust, head tight in to his dark chest. Then he’s up on hind legs, front hoofs jabbing the air like a boxer. One horse is clearly old and just stands there, head hanging, all ribs and bony hips, testimony to a harsh and difficult existence. thanks for reading http://alistairlyne.com
