NCGLFF.ORG 15 CHANGING MOVEMENT INTO LIGHT TRANSGENDER NORTH AMERICAN SHORTS (UNITED STATES, 98 MIN) Here’s a collection of eight narrative and documentary shorts about being transgender, genderqueer, or intersex in America. Michael Siebert and Shay Sullivan are two very different individuals with a common goal: to advocate for truth by helping society realize that gender does not equate to identity in Everyone in Between. A woman takes herself to dinner for the very first time in First Night Out. After emigrating from Israel, Noam is happily living in New York with an older woman, but will things change when an old lover comes to town for a visit in The Friend from Tel Aviv? House Not Home follows the journey of a gender-fluid high school student from bullying to self-acceptance. Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher follows the journey of a white, transgender, Okie man learning the truth about himself, his family, and Oklahoma history. Stella Walsh was one of the most celebrated female athletes on the planet. Her popularity continued for decades after winning a gold medal in the 1932 Olympics, until she was killed in a robbery and it was discovered that she had ambiguous gender. After being estranged from his family for 3 years, Julian returns home to spend Thanksgiving with his family in Transcend. Will they let Julian have his seat at the table when their only daughter returns as a man? In Vessels, a young transgender woman considers a dangerous black market “medical” procedure that may be her only option in gaining a more feminine body. AUGUST 13 AUGUST 14 AUGUST 16 AUGUST 20 CINEMA TWO CINEMA TWO CINEMA TWO CINEMA TWO DADDY’S BOY (US, 78 MIN) Four young men, each somewhere near the crossroads where boyhood and adulthood meet, find their lives intertwined in the strange world of low-budget porn and male burlesque photo shoots in New York City. Writer-director Daniel Armando weaves themes of fatherhood, family, and manhood into a beautifully stylized, enormously evocative, and highly erotic sketch of contemporary New York City that feels timeless with its stunning black-andwhite cinematography. AUGUST 13 AUGUST 14 CINEMA TWO FLETCHER 3:10 P.M. 3:10 P.M. (US, 83 MIN) Executive produced by LGBTQ supporter Susan Sarandon and shot by first-time filmmaker Hillevi Loven, Deep Run is a powerful verité portrait of trans life in rural North Carolina. Exiled by her family and rejected by an ex, 17-year-old Spazz has no one to lean on for support. But when Spazz falls in love again and summons up the courage to become Cole, a strong-willed trans man, his candid humor and steadfast, all-inclusive Christian beliefs counter the bigotry he experiences daily. This raw documentary reveals rebirth and courage within America’s deeply conservative Bible Belt. Preceded by: BrocKINGton reveals as much about the human character as it does about the societal pressures to fit in. Identifying as transgender in North Carolina, there have been many hurdles in Blake Brockington’s life. 1:00 P.M. 6:50 P.M. 5:10 P.M. 4:55 P.M. AUGUST 14 AUGUST 17 CLOSET MONSTER (CANADA, 90 MIN) Teenage lust, woozy visions, and a talking hamster voiced by Isabella Rossellini shape this queer coming-of-age tale that’s as strange, scary and sublime as the real experience. Oscar (Connor Jessup) is an arty teen with a turbulent home life and a smoldering crush on hardware store “bad boy” Wilder (Aliocha Schneider). An aspiring makeup effects artist, Oscar spends his days concocting wild photo shoots with best friend Gemma (Sofia Banzhaf) and his nights weathering the neglect of an aloof mother and volatile father. Haunted by a gay bashing he witnessed as a child, he begins having surreal nightmares—rendered with grisly Cronenberg-esque flair that simmer to the surface of his mind and body, as his burgeoning queer desires do the same. Winner of multiple awards on the festival circuit and directed by Stephen Dunn, Closet Monster is deliriously dark, but with a cheeky comic wit. This film contains depictions of homophobic violence.
