As well as elite athletes from around the world, our Emirate is proud to bring together the running community of the UAE in a location that epitomizes team spirit, sportsmanship and our strong cultural heritage. The ongoing effort to ensure that this event takes place every year is our commitment to these ideals; which embody our identity and vision for the future. This year, I am pleased to say that we have again seen serious commitment from the elite community. Many of whom gave early confirmation of their commitment to this year’s race and we look forward to the possibility of seeing fast competitive times achieved in 2014. We once more express our deepest appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, for his patronage and unwavering support for the RAK Half Marathon. Without his tireless support, direction and vision, this event would not be the international success that it is today. On behalf of the Organizing Committee I would also like to thank all of the Partners and Sponsors of the RAK Half Marathon for their essential and valuable support and commitment to this important event in our Emirate’s calendar. This especially extends to our friends at Saqr Port, the Presenting Sponsor for their tireless devotion to ensuring every year’s event does not just meet expectations, but also exceeds them as well. We are justly proud of the fact that this has become and remains the fastest half marathon in the world as well as being an excellent world class road race that brings runners from all levels and locations together into a meaningful and rewarding event. We welcome you all to the RAK Half Marathon 2014 and wish you every success in the race. Don’t forget to check out the Official Race Website (www.rakmarathon.org) for last minute information and results. 3 Media Guide 2014 QUITE SIMPLY, THE WORLD’S FASTEST HALF MARATHON With the 8th edition of the RAK Half Marathon rapidly approaching – the 2014 race is on Friday 14th February - it seems appropriate to take a look at some of the remarkable statistics thrown up by the seven previous races staged in this northern most emirate of the UAE, about one hour across the desert from Dubai. When Race Director Nathan Clayton got the inaugural race underway on 9th February in 2007, he could hardly have known that day’s winner, one Sammy Wanjiru, would run what was then the fastest time ever recorded (though a world record was not officially recognised due to incomplete drug-testing procedures*) or that the 20 year old Kenyan would become the Olympic Marathon Champion just 18 months later. How indeed, could he possibly have predicted that from that day on, the race would become the “must do” early-year Half Marathon for those super-elite targeting a spring marathon or others simply wanting to boast a personal best that reflected the hard work they’d put in during the months and years beforehand. Wanjiru’s time that day was a stunning 58:53, a then unofficial “world best” by just two seconds, and although that course record has only been improved by one second, a host of top east Africans have burst through the 60-minute barrier since, with another five men dipping under the still special 59minute barrier. In 2013 alone, a total of just 13 men have broken the one-hour barrier for the half marathon (18 in 2011, 26 in 2012), eleven of them from Kenya and the others, inevitably perhaps, from Ethiopia. But the three names that top that 2013 ranking list, all achieved their time on February 15th at the RAK Half Marathon. Indeed, not only have five of those thirteen recorded their year’s best here in RAK, but again and again over recent years, the RAK times have populated the top end of the world lists and this is set to continue. And when one looks at the sum of the last seven editions of the “RAK Half” as it’s become known throughout the global running scene, the numbers of fast times achieved by east African athletes, are quite remarkable. Indeed, they put the RAK race on another level altogether from the rest of the world’s best 21.1km races. For the men’s part, on no less than 24 occasions has the one hour mark been beaten in RAK, by 19 different individuals, more than at any other race in the world in the same number of years. The names responsible for this astonishing record of sizzling racing, reads like a Who’s Who of world distance running, as the following makes very clear: 2007 1. Sammy Wanjiru (KEN) 58:53 – WR 5 weeks later & became 2008 Olympic Marathon Champion 2. Patrick Makau (KEN) 59:13 – would break WR for Marathon in 2011 3. Deriba Merga (ETH) 59:43 – would return to win RAK in 2011 with 59:25, by 20 seconds 2008 1. Patrick Makau (KEN) 59:35 – won a brilliant sprint to the tape by the thickness of his vest 2. Tsegay Kebede (ETH) 59:35 – lost this but took Olympic marathon bronze a few months later 3. Dickson Marwa (TAN) 59:52 – has never broken 60 minutes again; remains his best time 4. Fabiano Joseph (TAN) 59:56 – of 32 career half marathons, this remains his only sub-1 hour 2009 1. Patrick Makau (KEN) 58:52 – threatened the world record as the only double RAK champion (M) 2. Wilson Kipsang (KEN) 58:59 – set a new PB & in Sept 2013, would set current WR for marathon 4 Media Guide 2014 3. Deriba Merga (ETH) 59:18 – another third from after leading for much of the race at WR tempo 4. Wilson Chebet (KEN) 59:32 – one of the most consistent Half men in the world but “only” 4th 5. Matthew Koech (KEN) 59:54 – remains his one and only time under 60 minutes 2010 1. Geoffrey Mutai (KEN) 59:43 – would run fastest ever marathon in “downhill” Boston 2011 2. Tadese Tola (ETH) 59:49 – would take bronze in 2013 world marathon championship 3. Titus Masai (KEN) 59:51 – remains his one and only time under 60 minutes 4. Getu Feleke (ETH) 59:56 – would be 7th in 2013 but remains his only sub-60 minute time 2011 1. Deriba Merga (ETH) 59:25 – at last his front-running was rewarded after two 3rd places 2. Bernard Kipyego (KEN) 59:45 – would go on to be 2nd in Paris & 3rd in Chicago marathons 3. Leonard Langat (KEN) 59:52 – improved upon his PB from Luxembourg the previous year 2012 * Strong winds denied the men the chance of a super-fast sub 60 minute clocking. 2013 1. Geoffrey Kipsang (KEN) 58:54 – improved his PB by 32 seconds to become No.7 All-Time 2. Stanley Biwott (KEN) 58:56 – improved his PB by 48 seconds to become No.10 All-Time 3. Geoffrey Mutai (KEN) 58:58 – much faster than he ran to win in 201 – but only 3rd 4. Feyisa Lelisa (ETH) 59:25 – world championships bronze medallist 2011 5. Stephen Kibet (KEN) – one of the most consistent at elite level, accepted his lowest placing ever For the women’s part, while the seven years of competition can’t show quite the same strength in depth, the RAK event can boast the current World Record. But aside from tiny Mary Keitany’s historic winning time of 65:50 in 2011, there have been other notable performances worthy of mention: 2007-08 Bizarrely, for 2 years, the elite women ran tactical races despite perfect running conditions 2009 1. Dire Tune (ETH) 67:18 – an Ethiopian National Record despite a 30 second winning margin 2010 1. Elvan Abeylegesse (TUR) 67:07 – a winning debut for the Turk, leading four others sub68:00 2011 1. Mary Keitany (KEN) 65:50 World Record – setting records galore en route & won by 3+ minutes 2012 1. Mary Keitany (KEN) 66:42 – despite headwinds, the WR holder won by over 2½ minutes 2013 1. Lucy Kabuu (KEN) 66:09 – a 2 second win leading 3 others under the magical 67 minute barrier So what can be expected from RAK 2014? The race has provided ideal conditions in 6 out of the 7 editions to date, only the wind being a threat to great times. And while the organisers have of course, created a rod for their own backs, the 2014 elite fields are shaping up nicely – certainly equal to anything that’s been served up before on the flat, looping roads around the small mangrovepopulated city lagoon – and the chances are that more records are coming RAK’s way. The elite and mass runners know that they’ll likely never race anywhere with quite the same prevailing conditions and the opportunity is one all seem to gladly grasp, year after year in Ras Al Khaimah. The relaxed informality of the UAE’s best half marathon, where joggers can rub shoulders with Olympic stars about to produce Olympian performances, is another reason for this big-little race to deserve continued recognition and praise way beyond the borders of the UAE or even Arabia. For RAK 2014, more of the same is likely to be served up. 5 Media Guide 2014 THE ELITE FIELD – MEN Note: Half Marathon Personal Best is indicated in [ ] after the athletes name 2 Bernard KOECH (KEN - 26) PB 59:10 (2.Lille, Sep 2012) 2. Source: http://www.iaaf.org 13 Media Guide 2014 Word from Mr. Aaref Al Haranki General Coordinator On February 14th 2014 Ras Al Khaimah will once again host what has become one of the most anticipated half marathons on the international running calendar and it is therefore time to welcome once again the thousands of runners who come from across the UAE and across the world to visit us in the name of sport and community spirit. As General Coordinator of the Executive Organizing Committee I take great pride in this event that has taken the name of Ras Al Khaimah around the world and has allowed so many people to witness this stunning Emirate in all its glory. It is testament to the hard work of the committee members that we have reached such a level of international accreditation and acclaim and enjoy an ever growing number of supporters who enjoy and appreciate the high standards that we afford not only to the elite runners, but to each and every single participant. Our goal is not only to provide Ras Al Khaimah with a world class event, it's to provide a quality road race that offers all participants something achievable, especially in the Team Relay Challenge. We are grateful once more to His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah for patronizing and whole-heartedly supporting this race. We are indebted once again to our Presenting Sponsor Saqr Port who for the eighth year has enabled this event to reach new heights. Our appreciation is also extended to our event partners and the many volunteers who give willingly of their time to ensure everyone enjoys the event to the maximum. We invite each and every one of you to Ras Al Khaimah, to enjoy our hospitality, bask in the natural beauty RAK offers and to leave with happy memories of a community that welcomes everyone. We proudly welcome you all to the RAK Half Marathon 2014. Yours in Sport, Aaref Al Haranki General Coordinator 14 Media Guide 2014 PREMIER TIMING Premier Timing is the Preferred Partner of MYLAPS across the GCC. The world’s leading timing technology for active sports events will once again be timing each and every participant in the RAK Half Marathon. The MYLAPS ChampionChip System is simple, accurate and professional. There is no similar system in the world. In many sports events people compete, with one another, with themselves and with time. For active sports events the MYLAPS Company (previously known as ChampionChip World) has revolutionized timing. In 1994 the company introduced an automatic timing system, which can not only time the finish but also split and start times. This made net times for every individual athlete possible. • High-tech and easy to use timing system • Fast and accurate results for small up to very large events • Multipurpose utility: the system can be used in many different active sports events • High level service by providing net times and splits for every individual competitor • Regional, national and worldwide network of professional timing companies MYLAPS ChampionChip technology…simple, accurate and fast The development of the ChampionChip technology started in 1993, initiated by the organization of the Seven Hills Run in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. It was officially introduced at the Berlin Marathon in September 1994. Presently the ChampionChip technology is used in the big city marathons, Ironman triathlons plus thousands of other events around the world, with proven superior performance. The basis for the ChampionChip technology is the radio-frequency identification system (RFID) from Texas Instruments, which is also used for security-locks in cars and admission control in buildings. The success of the ChampionChip technology is achieved through the combination of synchronized multiple antennas, high-tech analog and digital electronics, and dedicated software for live bulk data handling. Where has the ChampionChip System been used? In the past seven years, the RAK Half Marathon course has established itself as a record breaking fast course! Not only does it hold the Women’s Half Marathon World set by Mary Keitany in 2011, but based on the all time top 10 average finish times of both men (0:59:04) and women (1:06:43) the RAK Half Marathon is statistically the fastest in the world! In 2013 alone the RAK Half Marathon witnessed a record number of men finishing under 59 minutes and women under 67 minutes in the same race. The top 3 half marathon performances in 2013 for both men and women were all recorded here last February. Certification As in years past, John Kunkeler, Grade A Measurer certified by AIMS/IAAF will re-measure the course again two days prior to the race and again immediately after the race in the case of any record claim. John will also ride in the lead vehicle alongside the elite athletes to ensure the runners do not deviate from the approved measured course. The Course The course will start and finish at the same place just about opposite to the City Hotel and at the end of the Manar Mall car park next to the Carrefour sign and run south along Al Muntasir Road to the first crossroads where it will turn right and run along the edge of the Mangrove Swamp to the Police Officers Club (3.5km) where runners will turn right and run along and past the Sheikh Zayed Mosque along the Al Qawasim Corniche Road. The route will then turn left and head south again down Al Nahda Street (6-7km) and then left to the Al Shuhada Roundabout with a gentle curve around (8km) to bring runners on to the south side of the Mangrove Swamp Road and will continue until and turn right at the Ruler’s Palace (11km) and run along Khuzam Road to the Sheikh Abdullah Bin Muhammed Al Qasimi Roundabout (with a large lamp on it) (13.5km). Runners will then run straight (over) the roundabout and continue up to the next roundabout outside RAK Hospital, again run straight (over) to the intersection of Sultan Al Kabeer Road where they will U-turn (15km) and return along the north side of Khuzam Road, past the Ruler’s Palace (18km) and turn right back onto the south side of the Mangrove Road to the first crossroads where they will turn left and head back to the Finish Line with a good final sprint (we hope!). Aid Stations Water Stations will be located every 2.5km and Sports Drink Stations (Gatorade) every 5km (see inside cover map for exact locations) Medical Stations will be positioned every 5km and there will be toilet and shower facilities at the Start & Finish point (Race Car Park), 5km, 10km and 15km points. 17 Media Guide 2014 MEDICAL SERVICES, DISTANCE MARKERS, DRINKING STATIONS, & TOILETS Medical Aid along the Route Medical Stations along the routes are clearly signposted by Red Crescent signposts.
