Steve Roustio is a 1980 Jacksonville High School graduate. He was a three-year starter earning both allconference and all-state honors. He is currently on the top 25 all-time leading scorer list and owns the
single game, single season, and career assist records. He played at both Parkland Junior College and
Macmurray College. Roustio has played or coached a winning team at every level of competition. In 30
years as either a player, assistant coach or head coach, Roustio has been a part of 12 seasons with 20-ormore victories, as well as earning 34 tournament championships and two upset wins over the #1 ranked
team in the nation.
During his tenure as an assistant coach at Collinsville High School, the Kahoks (under Bob Bone’s
leadership) had a 239-122 record and five 20-win seasons, as well as seven Southwestern Conference titles
and nine IHSA Class AA regional championships. Roustio also helped produce three IBCA All-State
basketball players and one McDonald’s All-American. Collinsville High School currently ranks third in
the nation in total victories for high school boys’ basketball.
As the head boys’ basketball coach at Highland High School, Roustio’s teams finished third place in the
Mississippi Valley Conference two out of three years. In his third season, the struggling Bulldogs program
managed to win 8 of their final 11 regular season games before handing Centralia their final defeat in Trout
Gymnasium during the IHSA regional.
In Roustio’s first season at PORTA, the Bluejays finished 20-8 overall and 6-2 in the Sangamo Conference
(3rd place finish). This squad also produced the first 20 game winning season since 1996. The Jays
collected 10 tournament victories with a 3rd place finish at Williamsville, 2nd at Winchester, before
capturing the Beardstown Invitational Championship. The 2007-08 squad returns four starters, three of
which were All-Sangamo Conference selections
Steve and his wife Kathy have six children: Amanda (25), Loren (13), Jake (8), Jamie (8), Carter (8), and
Shannon (4).
Eric Kesler is in his 12th year as the freshmen, junior
varsity coach and varsity assistant coach for PORTA
basketball. His wife, Marlo, is a math teacher at Havana
High School. They have three daughters (Haley – 7th grade,
Emilee – 5th grade, Brooklyn -2nd grade). He has been
employed at PORTA for seventeen years and currently is
the District Technology Coordinator/Tallula Elementary
Principal. Eric is a 1987 graduate of Robinson High
School. He was a three year letterman in basketball and
baseball. He was an All-Apollo Conference selection in
both basketball and baseball. Eric has held several different
coaching positions while at PORTA: jr. high football –
3yrs., jr. high basketball – 3 yrs., golf – 2 yrs., head baseball
coach – 5 yrs. and 5th-6th girl’s basketball – 2yrs. Eric
received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business
Education from Eastern Illinois University and his Masters
in Educational Administration from Western Illinois
University.
Tad Derenzy is a 1998 graduate of Canton High School. He
participated in basketball, football, and baseball, earning All
Conference Honors in Baseball both his Junior and Senior year.
His college experience includes graduating from Spoon River
Community College In 2000 And Illinois State University In 2003.
Mr. Derenzy is currently in his fifth year as the 8th Grade Coach. He
has compiled two winning seasons and two Regional Championship
game appearances.
Tim Bicknell is a 1998 Bluffs High School graduate. As a
varsity player for three years, he earned both All-Conference and
various All-Tournament Team honors. He played on two Regional
Championship Teams and his teams had a record of 48-11 over his last
two years at Bluffs.
Coach Bicknell went on to attend Eastern Illinois University
and graduate with Honors in 2003. He has spent the last three years
teaching and coaching at Griggsville-Perry High School. As a
JV/Freshman Basketball coach, Bicknell won two Tournament
Championships.
Coach Bicknell currently teaches Speech, Broadcasting,
Media, and Physical Education at PORTA Junior High and High
School.
Tim Hurie has been a teacher and basketball coach in the PORTA School
District for 35 years. Tim and his wife, Mary Jane, have lived in rural
Petersburg during that time. They are the parents of two children, Jeff and Katy,
both PORTA High School graduates. Jeff and his wife, the former Shellie
Duncheon of Petersburg, live in Bloomington, IL. Katy is currently a law
student at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Tim has coached
basketball at all levels in the PORTA school system for both boys and girls. He
currently serves as athletic director and basketball coordinator for PORTA
Central School. In addition to coaching basketball in the PORTA district for 35
years, Tim has also coached baseball for 18 years and football for 12 years.
Active in the community, Tim coordinates baseball, soccer, and flag football for
the youth of Petersburg. He is also active in the youth ministry at Rock Creek
Presbyterian Church and the Menard County “Jesus Rocks” youth outreach of
No Mountain Too High Christian Ministry. During his time coaching
basketball in the PORTA district, Tim has had the honor of coaching and
helping develop many outstanding young basketball players. He has also had
the pleasure of working with such fine head coaches as Mike Logdson, Tom
Sorrells, Matt Mead, Jack Coil, Dick Well, Ray Toland, Eric Sarff, Steve
Weemer, and Mark Cox. Tim is looking forward to working with coaches
Roustio and Kesler to continue the development of the PORTA Bluejays
basketball program.
Sean O’Brien is a 2001 graduate of Carlinville High
School where he participated in both football and
basketball. Coach O’Brien continued his education at
Eastern Illinois University. He graduated in 2006 with a
degree in Social Science centered on Sociology and
Anthropology. In addition he received a Physical
Education minor focused on coaching. Coach O’Brien
currently teaches 7th grade Social Studies.
