A Cool Contest
The tundra was frozen, but the juustoleipa was hot at the 2013 United States
Championship Cheese Contest. Our
third visit to Lambeau Field ran smoothly, including the wireless iPad network
that freed our judges and made life easy
for our backroom scoring team.
Congratulations to our 81 gold medal winners and all the top finishers in
this, the largest U.S. competition in our
122 years of cheese judging. The United States Championship Cheese Contest drew a record 1,702 entries from 30
states.
To meet this challenge, Wisconsin
Cheese Makers Association gathered
38 cheese experts from 16 states. These
judges paired off in teams to tackle contest classes, with each team tasting about
90 cheeses on March 12 and 13.
The media took interest in our Prepared Cheese Foods class, which included juustoleipa, breaded bries and meat
and cheese foods. The judges were presented with warmed juusto and baked
bries to evaluate these products with
their intended finish.
This attention to detail is accomplished because industry volunteers donate (all told) more than 200 full days of
service to the Contest. Our celebrated BTeam, led by Brian Eggebrecht with Welcome Dairy, includes cheesemakers and
industry suppliers from across the U.S.,
donning white lab coats to serve our
judging team. We couldn’t execute this
event without the B-Team.
Robert ‘Bob’ Aschebrock led the
judges for a ninth straight year, assisted
by Bill Schlinsog (emeritus chief judge),
and Assistant Chiefs Stan Dietsche with
Oshkosh Cheese Sales & Storage, Tim
Czmowski with Agropur in Hull, Iowa
and Jim Mueller, life-long cheese grader
turned consultant, from Green Bay.
U.S. Champion Marieka Penterman lifts her

The Contest joined forces with Paul’s
Pantry, a local food bank, to present the
Championship Round of judging in an
evening gala March 13. Green Bay cheese
lovers donated directly to Paul’s Pantry
with their ticket for the event, and their
generosity along with donations from
WCMA on behalf of our judges, raised
more than $14,000 for Paul’s Pantry.
At evening’s end, Marieke Penterman celebrated on stage with a dance.
The mature Gouda from Holland’s Family Cheese in Thorp, Wisconsin, earned
best of show– U.S. Champion honors.
