By Rabbi Moshe D Gutnick THE RATINGS WAR Two things grabbed my attention this week (as well as most of Australia). The first was two groups of grown men , overloaded with testosterone , going at each other with such force that we mere mortals would not stand a chance in their way. Of course I am referring to State of Origin - watched by literally millions of Australians. The blues versus the morones. The toughest match in rugby league. The battle of the giants. I heard a commentator say it was an extraordinary match, where there wasn't much between the best and worst player on the field. The oceans of blue and morone in the stands - and those watching at home from the edge of their seat (or perhaps couch). Eleven to ten , what a finish - and all the players shake hands as mates - with all eyes now on State of Origin 2. The other thing that got me going is I was reminded that Master Chef is in full swing. You would not have thought it possible. No violence, no sex, no murder or mayhem. Yet millions of Australians are captivated watching people cook. The high drama of battling for an immunity pin. The pressure test. The invention test. People sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for Gary to announce the score, or to find how many scarves does Matt actually have and what food is George going to like tonight. the most wholesome television you could imagine and probably the most popular. So let's think for a moment. Syria and ISIS and Iraq and Afghanistan and the Taliban all fighting it out. With a deadly force that leaves in it's path only death and destruction. Where people are murdered just for being, where there are no smiles no laughter only hatred and pillage and rape all for religion gone mad. There are no cooking competitions, there is only hunger and famine. Where the crimes are so monstrous that they could not even be shown on our television. Think about these things and then think again about State of Origin and Master Chef. Think of how blessed we are by God to live in the country that we do with the freedoms that we have. Remember that these freedoms are hard come by and that's why we have troops over there and lets hope and pray that they succeed in their mission and come home safe and sound. A SUNDAY IN SYDNEY Greater Sydney is one of the most multicultural areas in the world, with a significant number of its inhabitants originally born overseas. Conducted by Nicky Bomba (Bustamento, exJohn Butler Trio), the MSO’s marathon sets span the golden ska period of 1963 through to contemporary classics. The Orchestra will be joined by Sydney’s own young Project Collective Ska: two generations of riddim-masters will raise the roof in a skanking takeover of Vivid LIVE. Held on 30th May, 7pm at the Sydney Opera House. Friday, May 29, 2015 Visitors will be able to enter Level 25 of Australia Square, see the city from a different angle from the roof terrace of the historic 50 Martin Place, soar higher on Level 28 of Deutsche Bank Tower, Level 44 of One Farrer Place or the Recreational Deck at Quay West. The Camry is now in its 22nd straight year as Australia's best-selling mid-size car, clear evidence the Camry is extremely popular with Australian drivers. Toyota however have not rested on their laurels and have just released the New Look Camry and Aurion model which is now available at Sydney City Toyota. The 2015 Camry was developed for customers who want a car with more emotional styling and greater driving enjoyment, according to the car's chief engineer Masato Katsumata. The last model to be manufactured in the Altona plant in Melbourne, the car has been aggressively priced with the cheapest launch price on an automatic Camry in at least 18 years – even though today’s car is three generations newer and has significantly expanded safety, comfort and convenience features. Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said "The price for today's petrol Camry Altise is just $90 more than its equivalent launched 18 years ago in 1997, the automatic Camry CSi - a vehicle without features that are now standard such as seven airbags, vehicle stability control, anti-skid brakes, a reversing camera and touch-screen audio display”. Petrol and Hybrid The hybrid model line-up has been expanded from two to three variants. Camry Altise, Atara S and Atara SL are available with 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol or hybrid petrolelectric drivetrains. Hybrid variants develop a maximum 151kW from the combination of the petrol engine, 105kW electric drive motor and electronic continuously variable transmission, sipping just 5.2 litres/100km## - a figure typical of a much smaller and less powerful car. The government website greenvehicleguide.gov. au is a great site to compare the fuel efficiency of your vehicle and stack it up against a Toyota Camry Hybrid model. New Sporty Model Atara SX is a standalone sports model powered by the petrol engine. The dynamic SX package, conceived and executed by Toyota's Australian-based engineers, elevates the car's handling to create the most agile and responsive Camry yet. Immediately obvious are its brawny black fivespoke alloys - the first 18-inch wheels offered on a Camry in Australia - and wide low-profile tyres. A new sports suspension provides impressive body control and ride comfort simultaneously while a revised electric power steering system comes with a faster gear ratio for a more connected driving feel. While the standout achievement of the Australian engineering effort was the sports version, their input and evaluation played a vital role in ensuring every Camry is suited to local customer preferences and the rigours of Australian conditions. SAFETY Camry's five-star safety rating is supported by standard fitment of seven airbags, a reversing camera, vehicle stability and traction control, and anti-skid brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. SERVICING When you buy a new Toyota, you don't have to worry about unexpected and astronomical service costs. The upgraded Camry is covered by Toyota Service Advantage^^with up to five standard scheduled services at $140 each during the first four years or 75,000km (whichever occurs first). WEEKLY HOROSCOPE ARIES Things have been opening up all around you and LIBRA When you are feeling at your most low, dear TAURUS You may feel as though you are going through SCORPIO Intense energy may have you feeling more some intense changes both in your life and outside of it, Taurus, but you are going to find that things are changing for the better. You may be coming to a point where you are ready to make big changes: and you need to. Some of these things aren't in your control, but taking care of those that are will help. driven than usual this week, Scorpio. You are ready to take on some new projects or initiate some things and that will have you wondering where your time's gone. Try not to think about that, or the ways you've felt held back in the past. Rather, focus on the here and now, working with what you intend to accomplish. Tasks at hand are the best thing for you this week. GEMINI You are going to find yourself getting into place SAGITTARIUS This week finds you quite pensive as you consider the aspects of your life you are not overmuch thrilled with, Sagittarius. You may find that you have a lot of things you want to get done, and a lot more still yet that you sort of want to let go by the wayside: those things that are weighing you down or are holding you back? It's well past time to let them go. you may be starting to wonder how that's going to work out for you, Aries. A lot of the things you're seeing unfold in your life may have you open to a lot more possibilities now, but at the same time, you may hesitate a little. Though you don't usually do this, there are some things that are worrying your self confidence a little. to make things open up. There have been some frustrating things going on but you have others that have been backing you up, though they've also been very stressed and worn thin, too. Try to maintain a balance of some sort, and keep yourself on an even keel. I CANCER You might be feeling very meticulous this next two weeks, Cancer, and it's no wonder. You're feeling an urge to organize it all: and you're well aware that there's a need to do that. You may want to take the time to list all of the things you need to work on in order, and think about them over the course of the next few days. You're going to need to take some inventory- but it will be worth it. LEO Working through some issues and concerns you have with others will play a major role in determining how things proceed in the future, Leo. You are going to be finding that everything seems a lot more joyful and happy, things tend to open up and communication is definitely still on the agenda this week for you. Consider reaching out to someone you haven't heard from in a while. VIRGO Communications are highlighted across the board, this week, Virgo. You have been in many situations where you've overcome so much more. CAPRICORN Mapping out a plan for things is good, Capricorn, but don't get so focused on the bigger picture that you get overwhelmed. It's going to be an intense period of big dreams, big goals and even bigger chances up ahead- and you made all of that happen, but, take things a step at a time. You'll find that this makes things flow much more smoothly. AQUARIUS Giving yourself some time to enjoy life a bit is very important, Aquarius, but much more important this week than usual. You may have been giving a lot of energy to some who might not have appreciated all you have done- but, you can always give a little back to yourself, when needed. It is needed now. PISCES This week you are feeling a bit more out of focus and scattered than usual, Pisces and your energy is directed at those things you've been dreaming about accomplishing. The Gumnut babies are on a mission to see a human, but only in the distance. On their journey to the big city they meet friends and foes including Professor Kookaburra, Mrs Fantail, Mr Lizard, Mr Frog, Mrs Snake, Mr Possum and, of course, Little Ragged Blossom. Can Snugglepot lead the way? Can Cuddlepie hold his nerve? Can they avoid falling victim to the Big Bad Banksia Man? Find out the answers when Georgia Adamson, Christopher Tomkinson, Kirk Page and Jacob Warner take to the stage in this CDP Production directed by Susanna Dowling. Preview performances of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie will play at Darling Quarter, Chatswood, Casula, Parramatta and the Seymour Centre from 17 June prior to the opening of the World Premiere season at The Playhouse, Sydney Opera House from Saturday 27 June to Sunday 12 July 2015. May Gibbs' quintessentially Australian classics have fascinated and delighted generations of children and families, introducing them to the wonder and magic of the Australian bush. Now a new generation will be entranced by the iconic tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie when these beloved characters are brought to life on stage in a modern, funny and enchanting production that will introduce today’s children to the wonderful world of May Gibbs. May Gibbs died aged 92 in 1969, but her legacy to children lives on. She bequeathed her Neutral Bay home, Nutcote, to UNICEF and the copyright from the designs of her bush characters and stories to the Crippled Children’s Association (now Northcott Disability Services) and the Spastic Centre of NSW (now the Cerebral Palsy Alliance), generating royalties which have helped to provide vital support to thousands of Australian children in need. SEND US SUITABLE NEWSWORTHY STORIES Friday, May 29, 2015 John Pond’s tips for taking great Vivid photos at night Set your camera to shutter priority. For example on a Canon DSLR you turn the top dial to TV. Whereas on some SLR models, like the Nikon D40, shutter priority is displayed as the letter S. If your camera doesn't have TV or S then refer to your camera manual. If you have a tripod, set the ISO to the lowest setting your digital SLR camera will go. For example, Canon EOS 400D will go as low as 100 ISO, whereas a Nikon D40 will go to 200. If you don't have a tripod, look for something you can rest your camera on. For example a stone or brick wall. No tripod - the only choice of SLR settings you have for night photography is to set it to P (Program) and up the ISO to 800 - 1600 When all else fails, just leave your camera on automatic, it’s amazing what modern cameras can do. If using a point and shoot (yes I know you’ve never read the manual), turn off your flash. Good shooting. New sailing ship for Star Clippers Star Clippers, the tall ship sailing specialist, has started building a fourth ship to add to their fleet of graceful square riggers and the first new build since the launch of “Royal Clipper” in July 2000. The new vessel will be the biggest and most ambitious to date, carrying 300 passengers, measuring 8,770 tons and powered by more than 6,350 sq m of sails. Technically a five masted, square-rigged barque, the new ship will be launched in the second half of 2017 and is yet to be named. The company’s flagship “Royal Clipper” is modelled on the legendary German sailing ship “Preussen”, but the new member of the fleet will be a near-replica of the even more dramatic “France II”, commissioned in 1911 and the largest square rigger ever built. Just as the original “France II” eclipsed “Preussen” more than a century ago as the world’s largest square rigger, Star Clippers’ new build will replace its sister, “Royal Clipper”, as the largest ship of its kind afloat today. As well as generous deck space, the new vessel will have a watersports platform in the stern, for use when the ship is at anchor. Three pools, with one that funnels sunlight through the ship’s atrium into the elegantly appointed dining room, will ensure those who like a swim are well catered sound high-tech engines, but like its sisters, will rely on wind power and its sails wherever possible. Adding to the comfort levels for the 300 passengers are four luxurious owner’s suites, 34 suites with balconies plus a variety of cabin grades. Operating three of the world’s largest and tallest sailing vessels, Star Clippers visits ports often untouched by larger cruise ships and offers passengers the activities, amenities and atmosphere of a private yacht. Passengers can enjoy the romance of sailing on board a true tall ship in a relaxed atmosphere, with high standards of service. The vessels were the first sailing clippers to be built since 1910 and heralded a renaissance of a golden age of sail. In 2000, he added a third vessel, “Royal Clipper”, a fully square rigged vessel with 42 sails. The Nib launch Mayor of Waverley Sally Betts Waverley Historical Society Thank you to the Waverley Historical Society for inviting me to their wonderful afternoon tea at Bronte House last Sunday. The society do such an amazing job at conserving and promotion our area’s unique history and during our Anzac Day commemorative events they held walking tours of Council Chambers and Waverley Park including the war memorials and Margaret Whitlam Recreation Centre. A special thank you to President Peter McCallum for being such a supportive and regular attendee at our The Nib: Waverley Library Awards for Literature are back. They are now in their 14th year and they launched by Mayor Sally Betts on Wednesday 20 May as part of a Sydney Writers’ Festival event called True Crime – Morality, Money, Entertainment and the Truth. The event sold out and it was great to see over 200 people pack the Bondi Pavilion Theatre to hear authors Caroline Overington, Charles Waterstreet, Virgina Peters and Paul B.Kidd talk to Suzanne Leal about our thirst for true crime stories. For more information on The Nib, please visit waverley.nsw.gov.au/nib. Walk Safely to School Day Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is a national event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. The annual event was on Friday 22 May and I had the pleasure of going along to Bondi Beach Public School with Buzzy Bee, who has been teaching our children about road safety for several years now. Thank you to Cr Angela Burrill for accompanying Buzzy to Bronte Public School and Waverley Public School. Women of Empire Exhibition Our Anzac Centenary program is coming to a close with Women of Empire: A Commemorative Exhibition wrapping up this Sunday 31 May. If you have not already, I encourage you to visit Waverley Library to see the exhibition of original WWI era costumes staged by Dressing Australia – Museum of Costume. The collection includes compelling stories of the sacrifice and support women provided during the war, at home and abroad; stories such as that of Marion Smith, the only known nurse of indigenous origin to serve in World War I; and Maud Butler who dressed as a digger and stowed away twice. Randwick Mayor Ted Seng has welcomed the NSW Government’s release of the construction schedule for the Sydney CBD and South East Light Rail project. Construction will start in Randwick on Alison Road beside the Centennial Parklands in January 2016 while construction of the Kingsford branch line on Anzac Parade will start in February 2016. Work in High Street Randwick will occur between November 2016 and July 2017 while construction of both the terminals at Randwick and Kingsford is scheduled towards the end of the timeline in 2017. Randwick Mayor Ted Seng said: “Release of the construction timetable will help our community and business plan for the future and manage the impact of works. “Council staff received the schedule this morning and we are currently working through the details. “Light rail will provide much-needed improved transport for the south-east and will transform our City for the better. “We know the construction will cause substantial impacts and now with the release of the schedule we can better plan how to minimise inconvenience to residents, businesses and motorists and implement our Light Rail Community Support Plan. To view details of the construction schedule visit: www.sydneylightrail.transport.nsw.gov.au/ BRUCE NOTLEY-SMITH MP Member for Coogee GOVERNMENT DELIVERS SAVINGS FOR SENIORS I encourage seniors to take advantage of potential savings that are now available on their electricity, gas and solar bills through the NSW Government’s new partnership with AGL Energy (AGL). NSW Government is delivering on its election commitment to expand the Seniors Card program and ease cost of living pressures. Under this partnership, over 10,000 NSW Seniors Card holders in the Coogee Electorate can receive a 20% discount off electricity usage charges and 18% discount off gas usage charges. Seniors who switch their gas and electricity to AGL before 30 June will also get a $50 credit on each of their accounts. Seniors will also receive a 5% discount off all AGL tradespeople and appliances such as heating, cooling and hot water. Those in the Coogee Electorate interested in purchasing a solar system have access to two special offers through the AGL program. Seniors who purchase a system outright will receive an initial $100 credit on their AGL electricity bill. Seniors Card holders who take up AGL’s Senior Solar Smart Plan will save at least $200 off the solar energy plan compared to regular customers over their entire contract (7 -12 years). The NSW Government is doing what it can to ease cost of living pressures through partnerships like this which can make a real difference to seniors’ household finances. While savings will vary depending on individual circumstances including your current level of discount, for Seniors Card holder Cecilia Hicks, the benefits of the AGL offer were clear. Initial calculations estimate that switching to AGL and taking up the special AGL Seniors Card offer will save Mrs Hicks more than $300 on her annual household electricity bill. To find out more about the AGL discount energy plans, Seniors Card holders should call 1300 889 324 or visit www. agl.com.au/seniors. Randwick City Council voted on Tuesday, 26th May, 2015 to oppose a global city council and to form a merged eastern suburbs council with neighbouring Waverley Council and Botany Bay Council. The proposal, if supported by Waverley Council, could see a new council of 213,000 residents and deliver cost savings of $103M over 10 years. Randwick is recommended by the NSW Government to be merged into a global city council of more than 500,000 residents with City of Sydney, Woollahra, Waverley and Botany councils - unless a "broadly consistent" option is proposed. Adding Botany Bay Council in the merger will help meet NSW Government Fit for the Future scale and capacity requirements and add another 43,000 residents and result in a further $40M in cost savings. Randwick Mayor Ted Seng said:"Our Councillors showed true leadership and made the right decision to safeguard our eastern suburbs identity that we so closely align with, and to protect our community from the threat of a global city council. "We know that we are financially strong enough to stand alone, but that simply doesn't meet the criteria that's been set by the NSW Government and IPART. Mayor Ted Seng "Burying our heads in the sand would have sealed our fate as a global city, and seen Randwick become a suburban outpost of a mega city council - a decision that would no doubt have seen high-rise engulf our area and our sense of community completely lost. "We've done our due diligence and considered every option available to us. Plus, we have conducted our largest ever community consultation program on this issue. More than 8,000 people had their say, and of all the merger options, Randwick and Waverley was most preferred. "Our Councillors have also put in place a number of provisions, including enhanced employment protection of five years for staff, and a request that the Government conduct a binding referendum before any merger takes place," Mayor Seng said.
