December 2014 - Capital City Muskies Inc
Volume 31, Issue 12
December 2014
Prez Sez
December Meeting
If you attended the last CCMI membership meeting, you
know that new officers were elected for 2015. After
serving as your President for four years, I am stepping
down and current board member, Luke Vike, will take over
the duties of President beginning January 1, 2015. While it
might seem like a cliché, it truly has been an honor and a
privilege to serve as your President. I have really enjoyed
meeting more of you, fishing with more of you, and talking
about fishing with all of you. The Capital City Chapter of
Muskies, Inc. is a great club and it has been a lot of fun for
me to be able to participate in a leadership role. Thank you
very much for your support. I am not dropping out entirely.
I will continue to participate on the board as a past
president, along with Geoff Crandall, Steve Reinstra, and
Jim Olson.
Congratulations to all of next year’s officers. As noted
above, Luke Vike was elected President. Winston
Hopkins was elected Vice President after serving as
Secretary this last year. Gary Hoffman was elected as the
club’s new Secretary, Tom Penniston was re-elected
Chapter Representative to Muskies, Inc., and Matt
Newman was re-elected as Treasurer. Thank you, Dale
Anderson, who is also stepping down after being a very
successful Vice President the last couple of years. I urge
you to give your full support to next year’s officers. And,
as always, I encourage you to become involved in your
club. For CCMI to continue to be the success that it is,
members need to continue to step up and contribute, take
on assignments and participate in its events. It takes many
people to do all that we do and your involvement is crucial
to the continued success of CCMI.
Its December and the cold weather has set in. If we
don’t get a warming spell, we will likely have to drill
a hole to fish. In December, we elect the At-Larger
Directors to the Cap City board. We also have a
very special featured speaker in Joel Michel of Joel
Michel’s Guide Service.
(http://www.joelmichel.com/) and he guides the
lakes of Southeast Wiscionsin. His talk will be
“Spring Muskies, Top to Bottom”. The meeting
will be held at the 5100 Bar in McFarland
(http://5100bar.com/) on Monday, December 8th at
7pm. Come early and enjoy some fine food and
spirits as well as some muskie chatter. All general
meeting are free and open to the public. Bring
friends and family for a great evening.
Thank you! I hope to see you on the water. Catch a big
one – Catch many big ones.

Election Results
At the November meeting elections were held for
the Executive Board positions. The positions to
be elected were President, Vice-President,

Doing the duties of running the elections was
Chapter Board Member and Muskies, Inc
Parliamentarian, Henry Hempe. The results are
as follows;
President
- Luke Vike
Vice-Pres
- Winston Hopkins
Regional Rep - Tom Penniston
Treasurer
- Matt Newman
Secretary
- Gary Hoffman
Congratulations to the winners and a big thanks to
those that have given time to help run the Chapter
over the past year. And special thanks goes to
outgoing President, Lee Bartolini for a great rein
in your leadership, leading this chapter in
continuing stocking for the Chip/Leech study on
Lake Monona. We are also glad that Lee will be
involved in the future. We also thank outgoing
VP Dale Anderson as he will soon be spending
more time in the northwoods fishing and teaching
others to fish, which is a dream come true for
many of us. We hope he does well up there and
I’m sure he will help out the chapter as time will
allow.
At the December meeting will be holding
elections for At-Large Directors (ALD) and if you
would like to run for a position as ALD, contact
Lee Bartolini. We need a new and exciting ALDs
to keep this chapter vibrant.
Pictured are two 53 inch muskies from a Minnesota
trip Adam Oberfoell took in November. The one
above ate the lure after going around on a figure-8
multiple times. The one below is taken after dark
and not only stretch the tape 53 inches, but also
stretch it in the girth department at 25 inch. Those
are sure super nice fish!

Hi members, what a cold spell we have going. Many of the lakes have skim ice and it won’t be long to walk
on it. With that, it looks like the show season is drawing near. The Chicago venue has changed and is a
bigger event. Milwaukee is a continuing good draw in both vendors and crowds, so it looks like it shaping
up to be a good show season.
Looking at the new members we have signed over the last month, we had a couple. We have Joe Mueting of
McFarland and a family membership for Mark Andrews & his daughter, Olivia and they are from
Middleton. Welcome all!!
I know many around Christmas time, some get new computers and possibly new Internet Service Providers
(ISP) and a new email address, if that’s the case, also
go to www.muskiesinc.org and change your email
address on your profile. I use that information to email
members telling them when the newsletter is posted at
the www.capitalcitymuskiesinc.org web site. Please
keep your profile current.
Till next month………….

RELEASE REPORT
By Michael Winther [email protected] 608) 844 – 1382
With the cold snap in mid-November, area lakes are starting to ice up and the snow has landings getting
treacherous. This has many muskie anglers putting their boats into storage and turning their focus to deer
hunting. Please think safety first if you’re one of the die-hards still out there or even getting on the early ice.
With the season open until December 31st in southern Wisconsin, how many muskies will be caught on tipups this year?
The deadline for entries in the Muskies Inc Lunge Log is 30 days after the date of the catch. However,
entries from fish caught in December are due by January 15th.
Also be sure to email me a picture of your catches of 45” and longer to be entered in our annual replica
contests. If you still have some potential entries from earlier this summer, it’s not too late to send in those
pictures.
A few notable muskies were caught over the past 30 days...all from the same water!

2014 Cap City Leech Lake Strain Stocking
Olin Launch Lake Monona – On November 5, 2014 the Capital City Chapter of Muskies, Inc. took delivery on
a shipment of muskies from the Minnesota Muskie Farm. These muskies were the strain from Leech Lake,
Minnesota and they will become part of the ongoing study on Lake Monona which pits the growth rates of the
Chippewa River strain vs the Leech Lake strain. To keep track of these fish, they are implanted with Passive
Integrated Transponders (PIT) tags that can be read with a wand or reader when recaptured. In order to place
the PIT tags into the fish the WDNR personal needed to anesthetize the fish to fin clip, tag, and measure the
fish. The personal in charge of doing the delicate procedures were Dave Rowe, Jody Derks, Doug Lubke,
Kim Kuber, Lori Tate, and Mike Rennicke. After they are drugged, they can be safely handled during the
various steps of the operation and after all that, they are place into a recover tank. Due to the water temps being
in the 40s it took a little longer for them to recover again. From there they are placed into a stock tank in the
WDNR boat driven by Richard Brandt and two volunteers from the club and placed into the weed beds in
various areas of the lake. In the end the operation tagged 287 muskies and they averaged 9 – 10 inches in
length. The Cap City wanted 500 muskies for the study and has inquired about getting more of them, but no
more were available for purchase from the MN Muskie Farm. A great project well done by the great members
of the Capital City Chapter of Muskeis, Inc.
PIT Tagging Process
 - After being drugged, the
muskie is finned clipped, this year
they got the left vent fin clipped,
using left side for all Leech Lake
strain and alternating the vent and
pectoral fin every other year. 
- WDNR Tech Dave Rowe inserts
the PIT tag on the left side, near
the dorsal fin.  Then they are
measured, the tag is read, data is
entered into the computer, and are
placed into a recovery tank.  Cap City members Gary Hoffman
(L) & Lee Bartolini (R) dipping
the upright and alert muskies to be
placed into the stock boat, then
transported to the weedbeds in the
lake . More pics next page.
