Volume 32, Issue 2 February 20125 Prez Sez February Awards Meeting As we enter the heart of the Muskie “off-season” there is still a reason to be excited for Muskie fishing. January, February, and March offer excellent opportunities to get out of the house and attend some of the great fishing expos/shows. This January marked the first “new” Chicago Muskie Expo and February brings us my favorite winter event: The Milwaukee Muskie Expo. When you throw in the Madison Fishing Expo, our annual CCMI Intermediate and Advanced Muskie School, and our CCMI Monthly Membership meetings; there are a ton of Muskie events in the near future for you to enjoy. These events are so comprehensive, there is something for everybody, whether it’s a chance to pick up some new gear, meet tackle makers/guides/resort owners, rub elbows with Muskie fishing personalities from television & print, attend seminars, book a big trip for the upcoming year, network with others who just enjoy “talking muskies”, or even get a little boat shopping in. Each event has its own personality, so each show provides an experience unique to itself. In addition to the great fishing expos, I consider our February Awards Banquet an absolute must attend event. You get to see pictures of some giant Muskies caught by our club members over the past year, hear some of their back stories, and pick up a few subtle pointers too. Winter is also great time to make improvements as a Muskie angler. The winter months provide ample time for you to study lake maps, reflect on your notes and catch data from the past years, explore new water. and fishing opportunities through map books & internet resources, and read up on new techniques. ~ Continued Next Page ~ It was a great season for some of our members and at the February 9th Awards meeting that starts at 7PM at the 5100 Bar in McFarland (www.5100bar.com) we can see that. Release Chairman Mike Winther will take us through the data and highlights those great catches! We encourage all members and friends/family to attend and hear about the season that was. Making the season a bit better in 2014 was the fact that the waters around here never got terribly hot and that allowed many members to fish nearly the entire season here on the Madison area lakes. So please come and celebrate the 2014 Champions, and the other award winners. Don’t forget that the 5100 Bar has great dining and spirits for you to enjoy as well. See you at the 5100 Bar on Feb 9th for all those great fish stories. Past President Craig Eversoll earned “Lunker of the Month” for Sept 2014 with this 52 inch muskie from the waters of Minnesota. This will be one of many fish featured at the awards event on Feb 9th. Join us. Muskie Ink www.capitalcitymuskiesinc.org Page 1 1/29/2015 I also like to take the time to inventory of my lures, sharpen hooks, inspect my rods, and clean & oil my reels. If you give yourself a big “Muskie Fishing to-do list” it will help pass the time as you wait for spring to arrive. In addition to the to-do list and attending the various events, I always make it a point to read Time on the Water at least once every winter as it offers an escape from the snow & ice and reading it helps me to “get my Muskie fix” during the colder months. As previously mentioned March brings about our 14th Annual CCMI Intermediate and Advanced Muskie School on Saturday the 14th. This is one our biggest and best events. Dollar-for-Dollar not too many other events can offer what our Muskie School can. For a reasonable fee, you get to attend three high quality Muskie classes taught by some of the most knowledgeable Muskie Anglers that you are going to find anywhere. On top of that, you start the day with free coffee and donuts and after your second class you get your fill with a delicious lunch. To top it all off there are also silent auctions and a raffle. If you have attended the school in the past, you know what I am talking about and we hope to see you again this year. If you have not taken the opportunity to enroll, I strongly urge you to because you have no idea what you are missing. I want to make a point to remind everyone that we as a local club do not charge dues. The membership fees that you pay actually go to Muskies, Inc., there is no trickle down or kick back from Muskies Inc to CCMI. Our club thrives solely upon its volunteers and the generosity of our members, donors, sponsors, and advertisers. I thank all of you who donate time, money, lures, gear, etc. and I urge all of our CCMI members to attend meetings, buy raffle tickets, and support our sponsors & advertising partners. I also ask you to do whatever you can to take pride in being a member and supporting the club, every little bit helps and every little bit is truly appreciated. Like so many things, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. I encourage our members to introduce someone new to the sport of Muskie Fishing and to introduce them to the great club that we have. It’s really exciting for me to watch someone new get bit by the Muskie bug and to dive head first into this painfully frustrating and wonderful hobby. I look forward to seeing you at the Awards Banquet and at future membership meetings & events. Every month brings us closer to the 2015 season so “Think Spring” and I hope you catch a monster, Matt DeVos Matt DeVos with a 49 inch muskie from Lake of the Woods last August on a Musky Mayhem Cowgirl. This big girl hit him at boatside on the figure 8. Matt tells me that he missed a bigger one later that day. All the reason to get you gear ready for the annual trip this year. Nice fish, Matt! Page 2 1/29/2015 MEMBERSHIP REPORT By Gerard Hellenbrand 822 S Gammon Rd #1, Madison, WI, 53719 608) 669 – 5046 E-mail [email protected] Hi members, I attended the Chicago Muskie Show and had a great time from what I could see. It was nice seeing folks I hadn’t seen in some time and also bought some baits (who can resist?). Coming up is the one in Milwaukee and the Madison Fishing Show. Both good show and well worth a few hours to attend. So this month we had several new members that have signed. They are Mitch Bergeson of Stoughton, Brett Hostetler of Sun Prairie, and Sean Arney and Brett Kammerer, both live in Madison. WELCOME!!!! The National does not send out membership cards as of last year. I do not have the capability of printing out another member’s membership card, however, if you would like me to print one out for you, just contact me (prefer by phone) and I would need your Muskies, Inc. password and I will give to you at the next meeting or send to you. It would be printed on card stock that you can laminate. Till next month…………. PIT Tag Scanner/Reader Return For CCMI Members who have been assigned PIT Tag scanners in 2014. They are due for inspection and battery replacement. Please turn in your scanner at the February 9 Awards meeting, the March Meeting or call Steve Reinstra to arrange pick up. (608) 770 - 7131. The Capital City Chapter is one of a number of Madison based fishing clubs that helps the Madison EXPO board run the show that weekend. If you would like to help in a two hour shift can sign up at the February 9th Awards meeting or you can call or email Lee Bartolini at (217) 652 - 8475 or [email protected] and ask when you can help out. If you work a two hours shift you get in free to the show that day as well. At the show we will also be in need of help selling raffle tickets for a brand new 2015 Ranger® boat and Dan Reim will be needing help in the Capital City MI booth that weekend. If you’re interested in helping out at the CCMI Booth by selling raffle tickets for the Ranger® boat, please call Dan Reim at (608) 512 - 9561. Also keep in mind that the Madison Fishing EXPO is one of our primary sponsors of our youth fishing tournament held on Lake Waubesa in June. Baits/Gear Wanted 2014 file photo In the past at the Madison Fishing EXPO the Cap City Muskies, Inc. hosted a “Garage Sale” and this year will be no different. We are asking members bring in unwanted baits or fishing gear to the February awards meeting as we will have a box to drop them in. The funds gained from the sale of this fishing tackle will be use to stock fish. If you can’t make the meetings, contact Dan Reim (512 - 9561) or Steve Reinstra (770 - 7131) on the eastside, or Gerard Hellen-brand (669 - 5046) on the westside, or bring them to the show and we will sell the used items. You know the old adage “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure” and we aim to help that along at the 2015 Madison Fishing EXPO. If you attend the show, stop in and browse the selection that membership has donated. Please note that you can also get Cap City clothing, caps, and stickers at the show as well at the show. If you know you want a particular item, you might want to contact President Luke Vike or Dan Reim to make sure that we will have it there for you, in the right size.
