From the Director — Welcome to Berthoud. We
are centrally located in Northern Colorado. You can
get here from almost everywhere and get almost everywhere from here. It’s not about
the distance you go to get here,
but about a great destination when
you arrive.
It’s springtime when we are putting this directory together, and I’m
thinking about the NEW Life with
all of the flowers and trees that
are budding and turning green.
We’ve had many NEW members
that have joined the Chamber this past year. (Thank
you.) There have been, and will continue to be, NEW
activities that we are creating and sponsoring at the
Chamber. You are asking and we are listening. We are

Berthoud is not only extrinsically beautiful, but its true
beauty is found in the heart and soul of the people who call
it home. We are a community of neighbor helping neighbor;
where no one is a stranger. Our churches, historical society,
service organizations, public safety professions and citizen/
government committees are powered by caring citizens
who love to serve others and make a difference.
For example, Berthoud Cares, a local non-profit, lends
promotional assistance to those Berthoud residents who
might find themselves in need of support due to accident,
illness, or other tragic events; Christmas in Berthoud brings
joy to neighbors in need; and the Berthoud Area Commu-
nity Center is the hub for senior citizen activities, nutritional
meals and transportation via Berthoud Area Transportation
Services (BATS).
Berthoud’s schools are staffed by dedicated professionals who raise the bar in creative academics. Parents work
alongside them, volunteering and fundraising for equipment and instructional resources to enhance educational
opportunities through the Berthoud Schools Fund event,

also enhances our educational options, circulating almost
50,000 items per year.

Town of Berthoud — Berthoud is open for business and encourages our existing businesses
to remain and expand while seeking new businesses to call Berthoud home. We have numerous ways and possible incentives to assist in these processes. The revised Development Code
provides for greater diversity and clarity for future development. The 2014 updated Comprehensive Plan refreshes the vision of the community seeking to retain the existing quality of life while

Small Business Development Center (SBDC) — Partnering with the Berthoud area, the
Larimer County SBDC offers counseling, workshops, resource links, etc., for start-up and existing
businesses. Their mission is “To provide high-quality and cost effective small business assistance, information and support which fosters the successful growth and development of small
businesses and results in a positive long-term economic impact on our communities.” See their

Enterprise Zone — Many portions of Berthoud are included in an Enterprise Zone. This zone
includes most parts of Mountain Avenue and 1st and 2nd Streets north of Mountain Avenue (see
website for specific details). There are many benefits to a business when it’s located in an Enterprise Zone. These include community benefits, tax benefits and credits, contribution credits, and

Larimer County Workforce Center — Provides employers and employees a venue to connect, provides employers information on the Enterprise Zone, and provides a wide array of
employment and training services. Following the trend initiated by the US Department of Labor,
Colorado has consolidated the many components of Job Service and Employment and Training
services to maximize its ability to serve job seekers as well as area employers. See their website

The Berthoud Area Chamber of Commerce
Annual Dinner is on Jan. 10, 2015. Our new
chamber officers are installed and awards are
presented to the Business of the Year, Citizen
of the Year, the Doc Fickel Award and the
Ambassador of the Year.
Also in January, our board of directors
has their afternoon retreat for planning the
upcoming year.
Our board of directors meetings are scheduled on the first Tuesday of each month.
Ambassador meetings are held on the
first Thursday after the first Tuesday of each
month.
Business After Hours provides a relaxed
atmosphere and new contacts every third
Wednesday of the month. Networking is
crucial for any business for several different
reasons: it is the source of excellent referrals; it
helps establish your product or service to potential buyers; and its purpose is to lead you
to very important partnerships to help your
business grow. Regional Business After Hours
are planned twice a year to expand your business reach with other Chambers of Commerce
and their partners.
Business Before Hours are held at 7:30
a.m. on the second Wednesday in February,
May, August and November. This event is only
45 minutes and gives you an opportunity to
network and get to work.
Your Berthoud Area Chamber of Commerce holds an educational and informative
monthly luncheon directed to helping businesses with their day-to-day operations. We
strive to bring you speakers who have topics
and material to communicate industry best
practices that you can apply to your company
ventures. We pride ourselves on advocacy and
being a voice for your growing business. We
have a collaborative luncheon with the Loveland Chamber quarterly (January, April, July
and October, when we meet on the fourth

The first Saturday in June the Berthoud
Area Chamber of Commerce extends an
invitation for everyone to participate in the
annual Berthoud Day activities in Berthoud
Town Park. Our community celebration kicks
off with a parade at 11 a.m. and festivities
throughout the day and evening — all around
town. Vendor booths are available.
On the third Saturday in June, we hold an
outdoor quilt show. This year we are adding
back our Arts and Craft Show. It is from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. in Fickel Park, located at 620

We host an Annual Berthoud Open Golf
Tournament each summer to raise money for
high school student scholarships to college.
This year it is on Aug. 15, 2014. Register

Berthoud Oktoberfest will be held on the
first Saturday in October. It runs from 11 a.m.
to 6 p.m. in Fickel Park, 620 Mountain Ave.,
Berthoud. We have plenty of genuine German/Austrian entertainment and food, as well
as great beers. Vendor booths are available.
The mission of Christmas in Berthoud is to
raise funds to provide holiday joy to individuals and families in need in our community. We
collect donations and organize fundraisers so
that we can purchase toys, gift cards, grocery
cards and more for those people who need

starts the first Saturday in December and continues throughout the holiday season.

Keeping Our History Alive!
F
ounded in 1977, the Berthoud Historical Society
discovers, preserves and interprets the his-
tory of the
Berthoud,
the Little
Thompson
Valley, Colorado and the
surrounding
region. The
society, a
self-funded,
nonprofit organization, hosts numerous events and
programs throughout the year and operates two
museums.
The Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum
located at 224 Mountain Ave. in Berthoud is a collection of historic buildings that include A.G. Bimson’s
1893 stone blacksmith shop, Elmer Carlson’s 1940
auto repair garage, the 1916 Meadow Hollow
country school, banker John Bunyan’s backyard
observatory, the 1874 Charles Meining Homestead
Cabin, and the A.G. Bimson barn. Unique exhibits
and comfortable gathering places in the Pioneer
Courtyard educate

Thompson School District — Berthoud is part of the Thompson School District, which has over 16,000
students pre-K through 12th grade. More than 1,800 attend school in Berthoud at the Berthoud Early Childhood Center, Berthoud
Elementary, Ivy Stockwell Elementary, Turner Middle School and Berthoud High School. Berthoud takes pride in its schools, which
traditionally score well above the state on the Colorado Student Assessment Program (TCAP) tests. State school achievement
reports give Berthoud schools high and excellent ratings. They also boast standout performances in sports, art, music, and such
activities as Show Choir, Knowledge Bowl and Odyssey of the Mind. Berthoud graduates have been Boettcher scholars, National
Merit scholars and military academy appointees. Berthoud Elementary has received the John Irwin Excellence in Education Award
from the state several times.
All of Berthoud’s schools offer an array of options for students through academics and co-curricular activities. Many programs are
provided to enhance a child’s education through activities like Berthoud Elementary School’s after-school programs, special projects
by the Turner Middle School gifted and talented students and much more. Volunteers also play a major role in Berthoud schools.

Berthoud Community Library — The Berthoud Community Library District (BCLD) provides access to
resources and programs aimed to bring people together and enrich their quality of life. Now linked to 49 Colorado-based libraries as
one of the AspenCat consortium, BCLD patrons benefit through expanded access to a joint catalog with close to 700,000 titles.

week. What began in 1932 as the brain child of the Berthoud Women’s Club, the
library moved to 236 Welch Avenue in 1995 thanks to generous gifts from Drs.
Helen and Bruce Fickel, as well as area businesses, organizations, individuals and
the town. After a comprehensive space-planning process, the library underwent
an extensive remodel in 2013, the overall face-lift including a revised children’s
section as well as expanded access to the high-traffic sections such as new releases. With an initial collection of 800 volumes in 1932, the library now provides
close to 25,000 books, DVDs and other materials.
The Little Thompson Observatory — The not-for-profit Little Thompson Science Foundation operates the Little Thompson Observatory in Berthoud as an all-volunteer organization. They perform community outreach
programs through a monthly public star night with knowledgeable speakers who discuss a variety of interesting astronomical and
scientific topics.
They also host a large variety of visitor groups by appointment and give them a very memorable evening or daytime session,
teaching them about the objects in our sky with the help of our constellation wall and letting them observe these objects through
our telescopes. The LTO has hosted more than 60,000 visitors from its opening in 1999, with 68% of our visitors in our target audience group of K-12 grades. The observatory and Berthoud High School have created a magnet astronomy course for high school
students, taught Thursday evenings and open to students from all district high schools. The observatory also supports professional
development workshops for teachers, which are accredited by local universities
and school districts and are partially funded by NASA.
The observatory houses an 18” Tinsley Cassegrain, a 6” Astro-physics Refractor
and the recently acquired historical 24” telescope from Mount Wilson, which was
used by NASA during the Apollo Space Program to research the surface of the
moon and select the various landing areas for the missions.

Parks & Recreation — The Town of Berthoud maintains
several parks within its limits that afford a number of opportunities for recreation; including ball courts, swimming pool, playgrounds, picnic areas and skate facilities. The town’s recreation program organizes a great number of youth and adult activities such

Berthoud is in close proximity to the Carter Lake recreation area. The scenic reservoir, which is three miles long and one mile
wide, sits in the foothills west of town at 5,760 feet. Surrounded by 1,000 acres of public land, the area is popular for sailing, fishing, camping, rock climbing, scuba diving, hiking and much more. Additionally, Berthoud is just an hour’s drive from the splendors
of Rocky Mountain National Park. With over 100 peaks above 10,000 feet, 359 miles of trails and 265,000 acres of natural wonder,
visitors can endlessly explore the park’s resources.

I have had a lot of exposure due to
the networking that I receive through the
Chamber. As a member you have to be
proactive, take part in the ribbon cuttings,
Business after Hours, special events, etc.
When you are at these special events
you need to network; just going is not
enough. If a person is shy they have to
learn to overcome that shyness and they
cannot just visit with their buddies as well
as the people they know. Take the time to introduce yourself to
new people. The more events that you attend, the more exposure
you get and your business will increase.
At every event I get one to two business cards from people
that I do not know. I also get re-orders. It is about developing
relationships, business relationships. I feel like, “out of sight/out
of mind.” I have been part of the chamber for 12-14 years. In this
time I have seen a 25%+ increase in my business. I have not made
any cold calls in 10-12 years because of being an active Chamber
member.

Our company membership
in the Berthoud C of C began
late in 2013 as the result of
the invitation from one of my
existing clients in Berthoud. I
eagerly renewed our membership the first of 2014 for the
year. There have been numerous benefits to our membership, both personal benefits
and benefits that have had a
positive effect on our bottom
line.
The personal benefits can be counted on all of the friendships that evolved from my participation in the Chamber events.
Every event has that ‘small town’ feel to it and the fellowship has
always been warm and outgoing. Granted, there’s never enough
time to take part in all the events that I would like to as this is a
very active Chamber, but , I have received more of a return on
the time invested here than I have in other Chambers.
The business benefits are derived from the additional
business that we have gained as a result of our membership. It
seems that the Berthoud Chamber does truly actively support
their own members. I have had opportunities to work with business people that I know I would not have been able to hook up
with otherwise.
All in all, I see a valued return on the investment in both time
and money that has been made in the Berthoud Chamber and
would encourage any small business to become a part of this
dynamic organization.
