animal WCHS corner Fall 2014 In This Issue: FUNdraisers, Spruce-Ups & New Staff The annual WCHS Garage Sale, held in May, raised $14,014—well over the goal that event organizers set! Thank you to co-organizers, Joe and Stephanie, all of the volunteers who make this fundraiser possible, and, of course, community members who come out in droves to shop ‘til they drop and support our cause. AREA ARTISTS HELP RAISE MONEY FOR WCHS This past April some of our area’s most prominent artists teamed up with two local businesses and the Wood County Humane Society (WCHS) to raise money for the abandoned, abused, and needy animals of northwest Ohio. On Friday, April 4, the Artists 4 Animals exhibit opened at Myles Baker Street Gallery. Sponsored jointly by the Bowling Green Arts Council (BGAC) and the WCHS, Artists 4 Animals was a juried gallery show featuring local artists ranging in age from 5 on up that ran through the month of April. Award winners included: Vicki Lee, Best Domestic Animal, “Dancing Party Cats”; Micah Smith, Best Wild Animal, “The Original Duck Face”; Gillian Fruth, first place kindergarten through grade 4, “Woodland Critters” and second place Madison Poiry, “Majestic Unicorn”; Kirstyn Harris, high school, “Frescizard”; and Ernest Guldbeck, adult, “What’s the Racket.” First place award winners in each category were reproduced on note cards that were available for purchase at the opening reception and currently are available at various locations throughout the city of Bowling Green (including Grounds for Thought). Community members mingle and peruse the art at the April 4 opening of the Artists 4 Animals exhibit. Photo by Kelsey Kleine (More photographs from the Artists 4 Animals event can be found at our Tumblr media archive: http://wchsprchair. tumblr.com/tagged/ArtistsforAnimals2014.) On Saturday, April 5, Manabigama Pottery Center hosted a fundraiser that brought together over a dozen of the area’s most active and talented ceramic artists to raise money for the WCHS and Nature’s Nursery Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation Education, a non-profit www.woodcountyhumanesociety.org Attendees peruse the silent auction items at the Potters for Pets event in May. Each potter donated an original piece of his/ her work for silent auction with 100 percent of the profits going to the two charities. In addition, each artist brought other works to sell; 30 percent of the proceeds from these additional works benefitted animal welfare in Lucas and Wood counties. Both events were enormously successful. In particular, Potters for Pets generated over $2200 to share between WCHS and Nature’s Nursery. If you are interested in helping us reach this goal of acquiring three more kennel covers, then you can send a monetary donation to the shelter with the memo “Kennel Covers” or kennel covers can be directly purchased at the Shade ‘n Things website (at http://www. shadenthings.com/). Note that we need the 12’ wide size. Very special “Thank Yous” to: • Boy Scout Troop 344, Pemberville, OH and Jared Briscoe for his Eagle Scout project which included a renovation of our intake room, allowing us to house more animals in that room, and for the design of the room which allows us to utilize the space more efficiently. In addition, for doing a major clean-up of the property with all our overgrown bushes and trees! • Downey Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling LLC for delivery and use of their dump truck for Jared’s Eagle Project • Kyle J. Sherman Excavating LLC for donating 15 tons of stone and the equipment to move the stone. • Matt Skivers for donating his time in operating the equipment (as a side, he is an employee of Sherman Excavating) and moving the stone and our shed to its new location. • Thanks to everyone who made Wine & Dine 2014 such a huge success! We raised over $8,000 of essential funds for the shelter. Thanks to Jerry Anderson, who joined us again this year as the host of our live auction. Thanks to our sponsors, whose generous donations make this event possible. HUGE thanks to Swatch Studios for the donation of a photo booth. Sponsored jointly by the WCHS, Clazel, Melt Shoppe, and Ink Mafia, this event involved 15 Bowling Green eateries and bars, all of which offered discounted drink specials to bar crawlers 21 years of age or older. The purpose of the event was two-fold, according to Luc Gibb, volunteer at the WCHS. The primary goal was to raise money to support the WCHS. A related goal, said Gibb, was to provide a safe and fun event for members of the university and local communities to come together for a worthwhile common cause. The event, dubbed the “First Annual Puppy Crawl,” raised $2,371.64 for the WCHS. I am giving this membership to the person/family named below. Memorial to: In honor of: Other: Amount enclosed: As a no-kill animal shelter, we are always in need of funds for the abandoned, abused, or neglected dogs and cats in our care. Your money helps us to buy food, supplies and medical care needed to house the animals in the shelter. With your help we can make a difference. Any size donation is much appreciated. Send to: Wood County Humane Society 801 Van Camp Rd. Bowling Green, OH 43402 animal spotlight! Abra Abra is a diabetic kitty on a prescription diet who desperately needs to find a loving home. Despite the constant poking and prodding that she must endure for insulin injections, she is extremely sweet-tempered and loving. She is a great lap cat and loves to be petted. She also is quite the talker and is not afraid to let you know when it’s dinner time. Abra’s adoption fee will be waived and her new forever human can take home whatever insulin the shelter has for her. Oakie & Duke Oakie and Duke came to the shelter when their owner passed away in April of this year. Both are male border collie mixes. Oakie initially is a little hesitant with new people, but you can tell he really wants to befriend everybody he meets and, after he quickly overcomes his initial shyness, Oakie exhibits a flirtatious personality that is absolutely adorable! Oakie’s brother, Duke, has struggled with being in the shelter and has become increasingly shyer. Like his brother, Duke is very loving once he warms up to a person. Duke does, though, like other dogs a great deal and he would do best if adopted with his brother, Okie. The brothers are ideally suited for a very patient and understanding home without children. Mags Mags is a senior, female feline who has an adorable, bunny-like appearance. She also has a very wee “meow” which adds to her charm. At first, Mags is a bit shy with new people, but she quickly warms up to kind people and she loves to be showered with attention. If you have a place in your home for a lovable lady like Mags, especially a home with lots of comfy places to nap, then stop by the WCHS and ask for “Mags.” IN MEMORY OF Annclaire Coghlin from granddaughter Hannah Rickels Baby from Jean Baker Bailey from Vance & Karen Tavitian Kathleen McFarland-Boden Steve Cernkovich Steve & Rhonda Melchi Barbara Jean Kosmider from Sulphur Springs Realty, Michael Miller Martha & Jon Hummel Beaner from Steven C. The WCHS Board is a voluntary working Board of between 11 and 15 local leaders dedicated to providing direction and guidance to the nonprofit organization. Board members are elected annually for a term of two years. The WCHS Board of Directors meets once monthly for two hours. Individual Board members also are expected to serve as Chair or Co-Chair one of the Board’s nine permanent committees. Time commitments vary depending on the time of year, the specific committees in which a Board member is involved, and the make-up of the Board at any given time. However, volunteers typically devote between 8 and 16 hours per month to Boardrelated activities. Individuals who are interested in applying to the WCHS Board of Directors should contact Kathy Dean, Vice President of Shelter Operations, at [email protected]. Or how about if a percentage of every purchase you made online went to support our cause? Well, now it can! The Goodsearch toolbar is free to download and allows you to raise money for WCHS virtually every time you search or shop online! Each time you shop at more than 1,400 stores (from Amazon to Target!) a percentage of your purchase will automatically be donated to WCHS—at no cost to you (and you may even save money as the toolbar also provides you with thousands of discount coupons and free shipping offers!). The toolbar also has a search box and each time you search the Internet, about a penny is donated to our cause. It adds up - $635+ already. Visit www. goodsearch.com next time you are online -you can even make it your home page. It takes 3 simple steps: 1. Go to www.goodsearch.com 2. Choose Wood County Humane Society as your cause. Did you know that the WCHS maintains an Amazon.com Wish List? The next time you’re buying a book by your favorite author, or downloading an album by your favorite band, check out our wish list and donate something to the animals as well. To do so, visit www.amazon.com and, from the main menu in the upper-left-hand corner, left click on “Full Store Directory.” Scroll to the middle section of the store directory and, under “Gifts & Lists,” left click on “Wish List.” In the search bar on the next page, type in “Wood County Humane Society” and you’ll be taken to our wish list, where you can choose from many different items that we and our animals need. Did you know that Amazon.com will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice? All you need to do is visit https://smile.amazon.com/, log in, and then designate the WCHS as your charitable organization of choice. 3. Search as usual and help the pennies pile up! Kroger Community Rewards Program® Have you enrolled in the Kroger Community Rewards® program? Did you know that Kroger Community Rewards® has contributed thousands of dollars to the animals at the WCHS??? The program was designed to make fundraising easy for everyone involved—and it couldn’t be simpler to enroll and participate. Just visit the Kroger Community Rewards® webpage (at https://www. kroger.com/communityrewards) and follow a few simple steps. Then, every time you shop at Kroger, just swipe your card and a percentage of your total bill will be donated to WCHS! page 5 Q&A with Our New Event Planner where she works on a daily basis with area teachers to plan field trips to the science center. Tara also currently is working on gaining wedding planning experience so that she eventually can open her own wedding planning company. Q: What interested you about the Event Planner position with the WCHS? A: I like animals and think that having a pet is such an important part of a family! So getting to plan events and help animals sounded like a good deal to me! Q: Where do you see yourself in five years? In May, we hired Tara Moore as our parttime Event Planner. Tara is a 2011 graduate from Bowling Green State University with a B.S. in Tourism, Leisure Studies and Event Planning. After graduating from BGSU, Tara began work at Imagination Station (Toledo) in the reservations department, THE 2014 WINE & DINE BENEFIT Volunteers Jan Harr and Jacqui Nathan and Fundraising Chair Emily Keegan prepare some of the silent auction items that were featured at this year’s Wine & Dine, held in June. page 6 A: Professionally I want to start my own event planning company! I love planning weddings, but I also love working with nonprofits and everything in between so I am not exactly sure what the company will be but hopefully a little bit of everything. Personally, I already have one son who is the love of my life! He will be three months old on July 6th! And in the next five years I hope to have at least one The Wine & Dine Benefit was a fun and fabulous night! BGSU’s ballroom in the Bowen Thompson Student Union provided a spacious and attractive setting. The buffet grazing included many delicious choices that kept delighted diners coming back for more; tasty wines from Heidelberg Distributors, gorgeous flowers from Glendale Flowers and a great band. The auction items were pretty tasty too: from vacations, fine art and jewelry to car washes for a year and a vaccuum cleaner... and Jerry Anderson kept the live auction jumping! Thanks to: Our generous sponsors Our fabulous volunteers Jerry Anderson THE BAND Dr. David Bouduris Tom and Kathy Wojciechowski Master Chemical Perrysburg Animal Care and all of the folks who came and enjoyed the evening. more sibling for Luke. Q: What do you enjoy doing in your “spare time”? I am a youth sponsor for my church (Perrysburg Alliance Church) which basically means I get to hang out with the middle school and high school students and teach them about God! My most favorite thing to do is hang out with people. You name it, I just really love being with family and friends. And when I am not doing any of that I love to sit down and enjoy a good book! I don’t really have a favorite book and love everything, even cheesy love stories but especially Nicholas Sparks books! Q: Do you have any animals? A: We have one dog who is just about five years old and her name is Sophie. She is a Shih Poo (A Shih tzu poodle mix). Q: What are you most looking forward to about your new position with the WCHS? A: I am looking forward to the events! I love the planning but the best part of that is seeing the end result and knowing that all the hard work that everyone put into it was for something amazing in the end! VOLUNTEER Focus Sandy Lepper This edition of “Volunteer Focus” celebrates the many contributions that Sandy Lepper has made to our organization. Sandy, a fifty-twoyear resident of Bowling Green, has volunteered with WCHS since the mid1990s when she retired from teaching English at Bowling Green High School. During her time as a WCHS volunteer, Sandy has provided a variety of important services to our organization, including depositing donations to the organization for fifteen years, serving on the Board for one year, walking shelter dogs, fostering cats, and cleaning the shelter. She also has worked all of our major fundraisers, including Mutt Strut and Wine & Dine. Between 1996 and 2008, Sandy spearheaded the annual garage sale, which is held at the Wood County Fairgrounds every May. Currently Sandy maintains the membership database for the organization. Each week she also collects donations of food and litter from several area retailers, a service that she has provided to the organization for nearly seven years. Of Sandy’s passion for and dedication to the WCHS, Board Member Sue Frost says, “Sandy has tirelessly volunteered hundreds and hundreds of hours to the Humane Society and we can’t thank her enough for all she does for the animals, staff and Wood County community.” This summer we will dedicate a black gum tree recently planted in front of our shelter to Sandy in appreciation of all of the work she does for us! According to committee member Kathy Dean, the first phase of committee work involves intensive education about the nature and scope of the problem in the local area. To this end, committee members currently are involved in learning about the factors that influence feral cat populations. Education efforts also involve researching how other communities address such populations, reading extensively on the issue, and talking with experts about available resources to address the issue. Anyone interested in joining the committee should contact Kathy at [email protected] for information about upcoming meetings. President . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
