Dear Friends:

As we looked back over the past year, we realized that much of what has contributed to
our success could be summed up in just a few simple, yet telling, words. As such, we have
selected “Growing, Learning, Sharing, Leading” as the theme for this year’s Annual Report.

Much of what the Vancouver Society of Children’s Centres has achieved over the last 20+
years has been learned along the way. These lessons have helped shape VSOCC from just
a novel concept in 1994 to its current distinction as one of the premier non-profit child
serving agencies in BC. From our programs and services, to our governance structures,
to our management of the society’s finances; families and children have benefited from
a shared focus on continuous learning in our efforts to provide high quality services. We
strive each and every day to remain on the forefront of new and innovative ways to work
with children and families. As an agency dedicated to working with government, business
and community partners, VSOCC embodies the concept of sharing. It is through these
commitments we help children and families thrive and reach their full potential.
As we have learned, shared and led, we have also grown. From more programs and
services, to increasingly engaged and empowered staff and volunteers, to better financial
strength, VSOCC is a great example of the powerful impact generated by many partners
working together, growing, learning, sharing, and leading; ultimately turning words
into action.
For all that we have achieved this year, we remain humbled by the trust and support that
we have from so many.

About VSOCC
The Vancouver Society of Children’s Centres (VSOCC) has been serving families with young children since 1995. In partnership with
many others, we have worked to create a vibrant community for families in the downtown peninsula of Vancouver.
Today, VSOCC is the largest single-purpose organization providing non-profit child care in British Columbia, and is one of the largest
providers of infant & toddler care in western Canada.
Vision
We believe that young children and families are healthiest and most resilient when they are actively connected to, and positively
engaged in their community. In partnership with other service providers, we are committed to creating Neighbourhood Hubs which
offer a full range of services for families and are closely linked to elementary schools where:
1. Children can grow in healthy ways and are able to move towards their potential-physically, intellectually, creatively, socially
and emotionally.
2. Families are safe and feel safe as they play, work and learn.
3. Children, parents, and other caregivers have diverse opportunities to play, learn, and interact together.
4. Parents can easily access the resources they need to support the healthy development of their children.
5. Parents are able to contribute through work, play and learning, knowing that their children are safe and well-cared for.
6. Employers can access and maintain skilled workforces with high levels of productivity and morale.
7. Everyone is actively committed to investing in high quality childhood education, child care, and family services.
Mission
VSOCC is a non-profit society that designs, develops and delivers an integrated and comprehensive continuum of child and family
services that reflect community, family and children’s values, needs and interests.

Growing, Learning, Sharing, Leading
These are the words that empower us to develop – and sustain – meaningful relationships, connecting with our families, with our
children and with our many partners. Each word is immersed in our culture and this past year saw us seize many opportunities to
grow, learn, share and lead. We are pleased to share our accomplishments with you.
GROWING
“Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces
working together.”- James Cash Penney
With the support and dedication of many others we:
•
worked with the City and Executive Group to open our WEST Village Children’s
Centre - our first centre in the Village at False Creek
•
built gardens, grew vegetables and flowers in our centres and in neighbouring
community gardens
•
We are so
grateful to VSOCC for the
care provided to Frederik over the
last 4 years. He has flourished and we
are so appreciative of the fact that we were
able to go to work knowing our son was in
good hands, needless to say, the peace of mind
is immeasurable. In addition to the care
provided, we have been very impressed with
the VSOCC organization as a whole. It is
very organized, very well run, and every
person we’ve come into contact with has
been helpful and knowledgeable….
- Larissa Rutquist
expanded our After School Social Leadership program working with the King
George Family of Schools Team
•
worked with the Vancouver School Board and the City on the final
design of the community and school age program space for the new

groups, in sharing their skills in the technology area, in food programs,
and in developing our sustainability plan, as just a few examples
•
spent time improving our administration and finance systems to be even
VSOCC has
partnered with Gordon
Neighbourhood House for many,
many years. Together we work to
support the needs of families in our
community. Collaboration is in
VSOCC’s DNA and we couldn’t be more
proud of the work that we do together!

We have to say, as it’s
been quite a few years that
we’ve been with VSOCC, that it’s
like giving up a security blanket!!
Please know that all the people who
have taken care of Connor over the
years have been just amazing. Cannot
imagine how we could have done
the last 9 years without you! So
thank you to everyone.

LEARNING
“Try to learn something about everything and everything about
something.”- Thomas Huxley
Our commitment to quality meant that:
•
our staff completed over 5,000 hours of “in-service”
training – we offered 41 training sessions, 2 professional
development days, a leadership and administrative series
for supervisors/managers, and we piloted an “acting
supervisor” training series
•
we worked with the University of Victoria to prepare a
quality enhancement research proposal and to create a new
parent satisfaction survey

we updated our program policies and procedures to reflect
our new curriculum/philosophy and we developed new

LEADING
“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” – Warren G. Benis
With a focused commitment to working with others, we were in the fortunate position to provide leadership to:
•
The Downtown/West End Service Providers Planning Table which has just completed a two year coordinated action plan with a
focus on successful transitions into Kindergarten and into Grade 8. We coordinated the annual Ready, Set, Learn Community
Event and have implemented a number of shared activities.
•
The development of the Olympic Village Planning Table for Families, Children and Youth which hosted a community open house,
completed a parent needs assessment, successfully secured project funding from the United Way Success by 6 and is now
working on a formal action plan.
•
The Vancouver Child Care Administrators Network which has prioritized coordinated training, sharing key operating policies like
emergency planning and exploring innovative practices.
•
Research initiatives including a family engagement practices project and the exploration of quality assessment tools.
We were members of the:
•
BC Provincial Child Care Council, an advisory body to the Minister of Children and Family Development
•
Vancouver Joint Civic Child Council
•
Vancouver Windows of Opportunity Coalition
We can’t thank you
enough for the excellent
care and love provided to all our
children over the past 4 years. It’s
such an important time in their life and it
fills my heart with joy to see them happy,
thriving and being able to make friendships
and strong connections with their teacher
and their peers. ….You all have so much
passion and love for what you do and it
has been a wonderful experience to
be part of the VSOCC family.
- Anja Rodig
We were honoured to be nominated by some of our families for two awards – The
City of Vancouver Award of Excellence and the BC Council for the Families - Carol
Matusicky Distinguished Service to Families Award. In addition we were presented
with the May is Child Care Month Proclamation from the City of Vancouver at an
event that 60 of our children attended.
It has been a great
pleasure to work with the
VSOCC team on developing
partnerships and implementing
programs in the Olympic Village. We
were really impressed with their ability
to quickly convene the service providers
and collate the data for our planning –
and in less than a year, together,
we’ve accomplished much!
- Jocelyne Hamel
Executive Director, Mount Pleasant
Neighbourhood House
As VSOCC continues to evolve, we remain steadfast in our commitment to Grow, Learn, Share and Lead
with a goal of empowering children and families to reach their full potential.
