Whether you’re an emo punk or a head
banging rocker, a pretentious folksinger
or 40oz. sipping rapper, you’re probably
all asking yourselves the same question:
“How come three kids in pink shirts can
get a music video and I can’t?”
If the answer was so simple, I’d say it
was because pink is the new baby blue,
but unfortunately it’s a little more complicated. A recording artist without a
music video is like a door-to-door salesman without a car. You could get to the
people in walking distance, but anybody
further than your hometown won’t know
that you got the goods.

Last Wednesday, October 27, the
second annual Loonie Line took place
here at John Abbott. A large number
of students rousted themselves from
their beds to arrive at the ungodly
hour of 5:30, and kick off the event.
CHOM was broadcasting live from the
Agora. Terry DiMonte was ill with the
flu, but the show still went off without
a hitch, a welcome contrast to the
mechanical difficulties that obstructed last years live broadcast. The
ambitious goal was to double the
amount of money raised last year, and
run the length of the college twice.
The numerous volunteers were
surprisingly chipper for the early
hour, and everyone pitched in to
help. Previously received donations
were attached to the line, a number of
police technology students helped out
by standing guard over completed
sections of the line, and members of
the cheerleading squad came out to
help out with all aspects of the Loonie
Line. The volunteers had many reasons for wanting to help out. “The
community contributes so much, we
can at least do something to give
back,” “It’s not hard to wake up early
one morning. I would want someone
to help me out if I was in that situation,” and “Free coffee!” were some of
the responses I got when I asked what
motivated the volunteers to contribute their time.
Many members of the community
who are not students at John Abbott
came by to contribute to the Loonie
Line. The mayors of both Kirkland and
St. Anne de Bellevue came by, and numerous other members of the community made appearances. Many of
the departments within John Abbott
raised their own funds to contribute,
and many students passing through
the halls would drop off a loony or
two, or more. In the end, the line
ended up raising almost a thousand
dollars more than last year. It didn’t
quite reach as far as last year, but that
was largely due to the fact that several sizable donations were not converted into loonies in time, and so
could not be added to the line.
The Loonie Line is meant to benefit more than just the needy students
to whom the money is distributed,
through the financial aid office. It also
helps each and every John Abbott student to become more aware of the
benefits of philanthropy. Although
many of the donations came from departments or sponsors, John Abbott
students also provided a large quan-
tity of money. Everyone can afford a
Loonie, and the act of donation increases awareness of the benefits of
charitable efforts. Although the line
fell quite a bit short of the lofty goals
set for it, this gives a target to improve
upon for next year, and indeed the
amount of money raised was greater
this year.
Terry DiMonte himself is a graduate of John Abbott, and it was because
of this and connections between him
and the John Abbott foundation that
CHOM was present to support the
Loonie Line. Our own student council
president Frances Donald spoke on the
radio about the benefits of this kind of
endeavor, and CHOM’s presence
helped give the Loonie Line a higher
profile, and encourage students to
come out early and help out.
Overall, the event was a great success, both in raising money and in raising awareness. Everyone who contributed even one loony has helped
make a difference. Thanks to the efforts of Lucie Fournier, Josee
Lanouette and Jill Gowdey, this event
went off smoothly, and will be back
again for years to come to help out
the students of John Abbott who need
a little help.
While many independent musicians
use the Internet to promote their music
and others dedicate their time (and parents Buick le Sabre) to touring, a music
video is what separates the pants from the
panties. It’s what allows you to put a face
to your music and an image to your sound.
Now that video killed the radio star, the
Canadian music industry considers giving an opportunity to Canadian artists to
make a music videos a key element in the
fight boost a music industry that is used
to playing second fiddle to the United
States.

So, another issue has rolled
around, and I hope it finds you all
well, settling in for the end of semester crunch. Now is when the
real work starts, at least in my program, so its more important than
ever to keep up to date on work.
That being said, there’s always time
to help out our fellow students and
our community.
Next Tuesday, we are having
elections for the two open positions, Sports and Foreign Languages. If anyone out there is interested in running for either of
these positions, they can drop by
our meeting at H-033A, at 5:30 on
Tuesday. So if you are interested
in either of these positions, come
on down.
Last week, I volunteered at both
the Loonie Line, and the Halloween party. Both of these events are
for the benefit of the John Abbott
community, and I was happy to be
able to donate some of my time to
help out. Volunteering is a very
rewarding experience, and both
occasions made me feel good about
my school and myself. Also, these
events are a great way to meet with
some of the involved and motivated students here on campus. I
met some incredible people at
these events, and was very glad I
went.
And that concludes my random
mumblings for this issue. I hope you
enjoy this issue of our paper, and
maybe even think about contributing
yourself. Submissions can be dropped
off by E-mail or on disk at our office in
the club hallway, across from the oval.

may prove more challenging for

The Scott Peterson trial is
quickly approaching its final days
as closing arguments began on
Monday November 1 in the
Redwood California courthouse.
Closing arguments are scheduled
until Wednesday when finally after
a long five months, jurors will be
handed the case to commence
deliberation over the innocence or
guiltiness of Scott Peterson.
They may believe Peterson
killed his wife and son, but are not
completely sure enough to send
him on death row. They would
have voted not guilty, but now that
they have this second option they
are more inclined to vote guilty
and have Scott spend life in prison.
Scott Peterson is on trial for the
murders of his 27-year-old wife
Lacy Peterson and their fetus
Connor that she was
carrying at the time.
Scott
Peterson
allegedly killed his
wife
around
December 24 2002
and latter dumped
her body in the San
Francisco Bay.
This news was

the
satisfaction of the
defense, yet was
not
the
only
decision made by
Judge Delucchi.
Delucchi
also
made public that
he has decided not
to allow cameras
into
the
courtroom when the verdict is
being read so as to not “expose the
families to further scrutiny and
turn this into a spectacle.” For
The case may be

Whatever the

this new decision from the judge
will have definitely played a role
in the decision.

An unforgettable summer in Ottawa is within your reach! Canada’s Parliament needs English and

“Over the past three weeks,
we’ve emailed and called the
editors of CanWest’s 11 major daily
newspapers requesting comment
regarding the changing of Reuters’
newswire stories, including the
insertion of the word “terrorist”.
Four editors simply declined to
comment; six others referred us to
Ottawa Citizen’s Editor in Chief,
Scott Anderson. In a typical
response, Windsor Star’s Editor in
Chief, Marty Beneteau said, “Scott
will speak for the group, I prefer
to handle it that way.” However,
despite repeated attempts, we
were not able to arrange an
interview with Mr. Anderson. So,
we sent a second email to the 10
editors saying we are trying to
reach Mr. Anderson, but that we
would also like to ask them a few

questions about the Reuters
incident. We were keen to know
how it was received among the
readers and staff at their local
paper. Again, the editors referred
us back to Mr. Anderson. “Scott
can speak eloquently for all of us,”
said Regina Leader Post’s Editor in

Anderson has still not responded
to our phone and email requests.
Reuters is rightly upset, saying
CanWest’s practice undermines
their agency’s reporting. Many
Canadian journalists are upset
because CanWest has violated
accepted journalistic practice
without being properly held to
account. Students and teachers in
journalism schools across the
country are left wondering if their
profession has now reached a new
low. We believe this is an
important matter that deserves
more open debate.

Things are finally getting back to
normal around the College after a
busy week of events. First, there was
the Loonie Line on Wednesday,

a big success.
The semester is winding to a

there who are not yet involved in
any of the activities in the College,
there is still time. If you feel you’d
like to get involved in a club or student organization but aren’t sure

Over the last four weeks, about a dozen
students from John Abbott College have
had the pleasure of taking an American
Sign Language course. This was a thirtyfive dollar course offered
over a six-week period every
Wednesday evening. Before
I go on allow me to express
how excited I was about taking this course, as it has been
my dream for a long time to
be apt to communicate with
the hearing impaired.
We started out with simple instructions like “Signer
A: Ask name. Signer B: Give
name, ask name. Signer A:
Respond. Signer B: Respond,” and last Wednesday,
which was our fourth lesson,
we were getting into very
complex instructions such as
“Signer A: Ask personal information (teacher/student,
deaf/speaking, etc). Signer B:
Confirm (if correct) or deny
and correct (if incorrect). We
have also reached the level of learning
some deaf culture, emotions, animals,
family, and of course the sign alphabet.
I must make a confession,
when I first signed up for the
course I was expecting
somebody to stand up at the
front of the classroom and
just say “this means this…this
means this…” but when I arrived in class
and our instructor began asking us our
names and guessing what we had said, I
knew I was in for much more than that;
that I was going to get the full experience.
We were going to have to learn to com-

the course is almost entirely practice, and
we all have to pay very close attention to
what the others are signing. The classroom ambiance was also very familiar, we
were all on first-name basis and family
names were never an issue discussed.
It has been brought up during a break
(which was the only time we were allowed
to speak) that some of us would be interested in convincing Student Activities to
offer a second-level course in order for us
to be eligible for certification.
On a personal note, I want to take a
small opportunity on behalf of my class
and myself to thank Lea, our instructor,
for her dedication throughout the course,
and for her patience when signs became
difficult to grasp (or when we had improper grammar from not having the right
facial expression). We have had some
good laughs and some awkward moments
but I think in the end everything turned
out well and I hope we can succeed in getting a second-level course so that we can
become more fluent in this interesting language.

is a must; you will get tired. Try
making a ring around his member
with your index finger and thumb
and quickly moving it up and
down. You could try gentil nibbling but make sure to ask him first
because some guys really aren’t
gung ho for that kind of thing.
Along with all that good stuff, the
most sensitive part of the member
is just below the crown on the bottom. Just keep changing until you
get a good reaction. Anyway, that’s
all for this issue, ja ne.

Since the beginning of the fall
2004 semester, students at John
Abbott College in Ste-Anne-deBellevue have noticed that there are
many international students in their
classes-particularly Germans. In
fact, there are 77 Germans in the
school. They are not part of a twoway exchange program and most of
them did not know each other before
coming here. What’s more, they are
not taking specific programs such as
Science, Commerce or CALL.
German Humanities Prof Alan
Weiss and International Programs
Director/Prof Barry Reynolds
started the program six years ago.
Germans know about this program
through word-of-mouth. In addition
to German students, there are Chinese students. The reason why there
aren’t any students from other countries is because the program started
with only Germans and it hasn’t
evolved much since.
guage. She had also heard about the
beautiful campus and the school’s
good reputation. When asked about
the courses she takes she said that:
“I’m taking the courses for our program, but I’m also taking courses I’m
interested in.” She also adds: “The
reason why it isn’t a two-way exchange is because there was a demand from Germans to come here,
but there weren’t enough Canadians
who wanted to go to Germany.”
Students like the idea of having
international students in their
classes but they wonder: “Why
would German students want to go
study in Canada? Is our school really that good?”

smarter than my mother, because
they are able to use a computer,
and they speak with such disrespect to people like her, just because they have that ability. I look
at them and think two things. The
first is that Computers are designed, so that every slack jawed
yokel could use one. It is not hard
to use for your own personal use,
and I doubt that their use exceeds
the simple point-and-click. The
other thing is that they are not
smarter than the people who are
computer illiterate. So how about
a quick comparison. My mother
has a B.A. and is an English
teacher, and is by far more intelligent that the people who think they
are smarter because they can point
a mouse. And she couldn’t care less
about what RAM, BIOS, or POST
stands for. Then there are these
people who try to compare Mac
and Windows, even when they
don’t even know what they are talking about. I’m a Mac user, and
I do it quite often. But, reader,
so do you...you are probably
thinking that simply because I
have admitted to this little fact,
that I really have the IQ of a WWE
superstar. But we all do it, because
it’s both fun, and profitable.
First are these so-called ‘computer experts’. They are the most
annoying. I’m not talking about the
Computer Science students, in
third floor Penfield, because the
majority of them actually do know
what they are talking about. I’m
talking about the people who think
that just because they can type on
word, and know the meaning of a
few acronyms, that they are the
kings of turd town. For example,
my mother is completely computer illiterate. She openly admits it,
and is ok with it. There are people
who would say that they are

insult Wrestling fans, like my self.
Yes, the fights are scripted, and
unrealistic. Let’s face it, when
someone is hit with a sledge hammer, no matter how strong, will not
be able to stand, let alone pull off a
suplex. What are worse are the
people who think that they are
smarter, because they watch Ultimate Fighting. Yes, the fights are
real, and quite interesting, but
those people may have missed the
point of following RAW. I watch for
the story line, which is something,
which has also caused me problems, but I challenge anyone to
Watch Raw on TSN, Monday nights

Second, are the people who say
proudly that they don’t watch TV.
Not because they don’t have the
time, but because they think that
they can claim intelligence because of that. I’ll admit that the
quality of television is really going down hill, since the invention
of the reality series, but you can’t
say that you are really better, because you don’t watch TV. People
think I watch a lot of TV, but now
that I really think about it, I don’t
so much anymore. The only thing
I watch regularly is WWE Raw.
Which brings me to the third group
of people who fake intelligence.

While some students will be staying at the College for two semesters,
others are leaving at the end of this

Thérèse Robert, secretary to the
International Students’ Dean said
that: “Their school system is a bit
like the one in the rest of Canada
where you have Grade 12 and then
you go to University. The students
do not necessarily need to be part of
an elite group but they need a minimum average in order to qualify for
the program.” As for their classes,
they are part of a general program
that counts as equivalence for Grade
11. However, they can take extra
classes if they want to. Since out-oftown Canadian students have priority to get in residence, only 25 Germans are actually living on campus.
The others are in home-stay families
around the West Island.
She says that school is easier here
than in Germany. When asked what
Germans thought of Canadians, she
replied that: “People here are really
shy and polite. We’re more direct
and we say what we think.” While she
is enjoying her stay here, she is already scared of our Canadian winters thanks to her classmates who
have filled her in about them. Canadian student Mara Tyler said: “It’s

I know some people, who simply

It can be really easy to fake intelligence. I know this for a fact,

○
And that’s my two cents. The
problem is that people feel that
they must prove that they are
smarter than others. We are all
guilty of this. But you must
realize that intelligence alone
will not get you any where. That’s
why you go to school. The good
jobs go to those who work hard to
get an education, which proves
that they can do a job, and not to
the asshole in the back of the class
who thinks they already know everything and end up failing.

at eight o’clock the kids where bundled off home with loot bags full of

Friday October 29th was this
years kids Halloween party at John
Abbott. It is an Abbott tradition,
every year on the last Friday before
Halloween the student activities department in concert with student
volunteers organize a Halloween
party for children aged three to

many years ago and was held on Halloween as an alternative to trick or
treating for young children who’s
parents where nervous about them
going out into the neighborhood but
fears of anonymous strangers tampering with Halloween candy has
since died down and so in more recent years the party has been a way
for John Abbott college to reach out
to the community, particularly the
residents of St.Anne’s who to often
see the bad side of Abbott students
and to seldom see the generosity and
friendliness of our students. This
years event, while it didn’t have the
same number of children as in some
past years (one year the Agora was
filled with nearly two hundred hyperactivity youngsters) the event
last Friday was none the less a
smashing success. Children, some

point to us. Even though it should
be Mac’s responsibility to keep their
students on their campus, our
Munch Box does not help matters
very much because they make good
business from the high school students. Frankly I must also admit that
even if they wanted to make an effort to help us out, Munch Box personnel would not be able to tell the
difference between our students and
Mac’s students unless they carded
every single person who stood in
line to order something. This would
make lines in the Munch Box even
longer than they already are and
would cause Munch Box personnel

It was brought up a couple of issues ago that MacDonald High students have been invading our campus, Munch Box, vending machines
and even our Stewart Hall Cafeteria.
Surely anyone who read the article
in the Campus Life section knows
about the principal being quoted
saying “She would like to try one of
our poutines also,” well ladies and
gentleman, a group of pagans,
Banderites, and even a few others
gave her the opportunity to do so last
week.
The group involved
in bringing the poutine
over to Mac, myself included, have decided
to consider the point
she brought up and
hopefully, hand-inhand with SUJAC, attempt a compromise between us and the Munch
Box personnel, to stop them from
selling to Mac students so that we
could show we have done our part
and then Mac would enforce their
policy of their students not being
allowed on our campus. We should

Yes indeed, a small
group of frustrated students from various clubs
got together last week and
bought an extra large
poutine from the Munch
Box and brought it over to
MacDonald High School, where we
were warmly welcomed by the principal and gave her the poutine as a
“peace offering.”
The principal’s response was the

confess she brought up a very good

Hello again, my loyal readers. I
will not be doing an editor’s note
very frequently however, as Opinions editor, sometimes I feel my
opinion on certain issues needs to
be addressed. With the midterm
passed, the end of the semester approaching before we even know it,
Remembrance Day coming up; and
winter making
small threats
there is a lot going on. I would
finally like to
also mention a
small change in
The Polis, which
I introduced a
few issues ago.
Ladies and gentlemen, quite
frankly, if the owner of my IGA were
to kick out that nice veteran I saw
last weekend, I would quit my job.
People, unfortunately are so detached from the past that our generation, and the generation of young
managers slowly taking over for
their retiring predecessors, have no
clue whatsoever about what it was
like for a man to leave his family behind, knowing there was a huge
chance of never coming home, to go
and fight for his country. These little red cloth flowers represent that
and so much more, therefore I ask
you to please, wear a poppy on the
eleventh and have a brief moment
of silence around eleven o’clock, after all, those men and women fought
and died for our freedom we take for
granted today.
First and foremost, Remembrance Day is approaching November 11 th. To me, Remembrance Day
was always a day as sacred as Christmas, this is a day to honor and think
about those who fought and died for
our freedom in the two World Wars,
and the Korean War. At the IGA I
work at last weekend, I couldn’t help
but notice a friendly-looking veteran sitting at a table selling those
little flowers called poppies. The
elderly man selling poppies brought

Society and government are like music; there are different genres of music,
from classic to rock ‘n roll as there are
different ways society and government
can function. But our history of civilization has only tried two: First, capitalism
along with the suppression of the people
with a lot of capital inflicted on people with
less capital. Secondly for a brief intermission, socialism which was eventually only
a power differentiation of people with
equal capital.We probably won’t make a
rock ‘n roll to dance switch any time soon,
but we could try for a hip hop to R&R. We
could face each other instead of ignore,
we could end all wars and unite conscious
of our species, which is after all the meaning of the word humaine. We could if we
wanted to…yes collectively put and end
to wars, and we individually don’t want to
give up a little of our money so other people can eat.George Bush and his supporters are a step backward. The war is a step
backward as the U.S. veto on the resolution for Israel’s tank and bulldozer withdrawal from the West Bank is. Jerusalem
should be more like Montreal, where cultures embrace each other to their benefit.

Finally, winter; soon Mother Nature will be blessing (or cursing) us
with a lovely blanket of snow. Yes
people, like the end of the semester,
winter will soon be sneaking up on
us and haunting our poorly insulated apartments and probably startling certain students who did not
prepare appropriately. I come from
the country and I must say when its
cold outside I dress warmly, though
I anticipate things may be a tiny bit
warmer here. Lets hope my old
house I’m living in will outlast the cold.
Tips:
dress
warmly and if
you don’t go
home
every
weekend, next
time you go,
start bringing
your winter stuff back with you. If
you can avoid worrying about winter, you can focus on that bloody end
of the semester.

there is little time left to pass everything and keep one’s sanity. I’m
afraid I must speak from experience
that my first semester at Abbott
crawled up on me very swiftly, but
things will turn out in the end. To
those who have been working hard
don’t stop now; the worst is still to
come. To those writing finals soon,
good luck on them.

and compromise with Laird Security
and Munch Box personnel, we can
actually make this work. If we all pull
together and negotiate a compromise we can put an end to the invasions of MacDonald High’s students
and we can have our Munch Box and
our Stewart Cafeteria back. A petition will be going out soon to collect
as many signatures as possible; this
petition will be presented to SUJAC
and the Munch Box. If you are frustrated by the invasions of Mac’s students, I urge you to sign the petition
when it comes to you.

In the last issue, there was a piece
on the rusted, old Jeep in Ste Annede-Bellevue that appealed to me.
Every time I’m in Downtown Ste
Anne’s, I always wonder to myself,
“What is that ugly Jeep still doing
there?” Isn’t its time up? However,
when I read the article, I realized that
the piece of junk actually has history
behind it.
The first piece of information that
appealed to me was that it’s imported
and cannot be found in Montreal (Aw,
shucks!). The second thing I enjoyed
was finding out that the jeep had
traveled all around the world! At first,
I found it weird that it could have done
all that traveling but as I read on, it’s
an exciting piece of information. I
mean, after getting past all of the rust
on the outside, it does look like a jeep
from a Safari. It’s a very interesting
article that every person who has seen
the Jeep should read it. Now, that’s
one less mystery to solve.

I’m from Hudson, a small white-bred
gossip town, where the people always
keep an eye out for one another. Nothing
really happens here except for the occasional drunken bar fight and a couple of
sloppy shoplifting attempts.
Hip-hop came to me around the age
of 13 and I started rapping when I was 15.
There was something that appealed to me
about the music that was so great that I
wanted to use it as a venue for me to voice
creativity. While I would shift through
sub-genres of hip-hop, from N.W.A era
gangsta rap to afro centric conscious hiphop, I would see the world through the
eyes of somebody else and know that this
is how I would one day speak to people.
Sure, I was influenced, I would over-use
double negatives like it ain’t no thang. I
even got my hair braided once in high
school; I looked like a lighter Coolio. Hiphop became a culture that I unconsciously adopted and a thought process I
used as a venue to express myself. It made
A couple of weeks ago there was a drive
by shooting outside my recording studio
on the corner of Jean-Talon and Victoria.
A car was at a stoplight, while another car
pulled up beside them and opened fire.
Instead of firing at the intended target (the
people in the vehicle) the shooter misfired
and hit an innocent bystander killing her
instantly, not further than twenty feet
from the steps of my building. But I’ll get
back to that…

me want to be cultured, experience diversity and lead my life as passionately
as I once heard on the tapes that I would

where I came from, the importance of selfrespect and the concept that wherever
you’re from, the term “keep it real” really
means, “keep it you”.

Knowing it might be my last semester
at Abbott, I decided I wanted to get involved with Bandersnatch. I felt that I was
an asset, someone who has views and a
voice that would be refreshingly different
from a reader’s perspective. For the same
reasons that I embrace diversity, I joined
knowing that I would be an individual, and
I am, but that’s reality. Another reality is,
in a light-hearted fashion, people at
Bandersnatch have dubbed me “Drive-By
Jay”, differentiating me from the other Jay
on staff, playing on my obviously hip-hop
attire. Which brings me to my first point…
I’ve met some of the most interesting
people through music. I’ve recorded
songs with crack dealers, freestyled with
dudes I see on television and collaborated
with some of the most brilliant musicians
I know I’ll ever meet. Music is what allowed me to visit Toronto and Ottawa,
sleeping on couches, waking up to hear
my song playing from a neighbourhood
boombox. I’ve been on the radio, television and in the newspaper because of
things that I say, words that I write to a
rhythm that wouldn’t have existed otherwise if I didn’t ‘keep it me’.
How does a good kid from Hudson,
Quebec Canada get dubbed “Drive By Jay”,
especially in a light-hearted fashion? Music is so powerful, that it could create a
hip-hop culture so broad, that a coldblooded murderer and a Cegep student
who wears his hat sideways can be
grouped in the same stereotype. My real
question is, I wonder what the men were
listening to in their car when they decided
to take someone’s life.

The story starts when a normal,
suburban man discovers a large, bizarre
building has suddenly appeared from
nowhere. He enters, and learns that this
is in fact one of the weapon shops of,
you guessed it: Isher. This is from a future millions of years distant, and has
been displaced in time by an experimental weapon used by the empress of that
time in an attempt to destroy the
weapon shop. Apparently, the weapon
shop is immune to almost any form of
attack because it is not actually made
of matter. This rather cryptic and utterly implausible explanation is typical
of this books explanation of technical
issues, which is one of this books charm.
The general gist of this book is that
the weapon shops exist to allow citizens
to defy the empress and the government. The weapons project a protective field around the user, and are hundreds of times more powerful than any
other weapons available. The weapon
shops themselves appear from nowhere and, as mentioned before, are entirely indestructible. Most of the plot of
this book involves learning more about
this futuristic world, and the corruption
October 19, 2004 was an historic
date in WWE history. October 19 was
the date of the first Taboo Tuesday, a
Pay-Per-View event, like no other. The
WWE fans were left to decide what
would happen at this event, and as a
result, many things changed in the wrestling world. But, how did such an idea
come about? It all began when Edge was
stripped of his intercontinental title,
and Christain and Chris Jericho were
given a match at No Mercy, to compete
for the title. When this news was announced, Eric Bishoff stood in the ring,
with Christain and Jericho, and offered
them a steel cage match. Christain was
against that idea, so Jericho had the
audience decide what kind of match
they would have, and they decided on
a Ladder match, with the title dangling
above their heads. Jericho was won the
title at no mercy.
Micheals, Chris Benoit, both former
World title holders, or Edge. Chris Jericho was to defend his title against any
one of almost everyone in the Raw
locker room, Trish Stratus had to defend her Women’s title against all the
other divas, and the fans voted on what
they would be wearing. Kane was sched-
uled to fight Gene Snitsky, the man who
was responsible for the death of Kane’s
unborn son, and the fans voted for what
weapon they would use in the ring, Ric
Flair and Randy Orton were to have a
match, and Eugine and Bishoff were to
have a match, where the loser must either wear a dress, be the winner’s servant, or get his head shaved.
Then, at the season premiere of
Monday Night Raw, Vince McMahon
announced Taboo Tuesday, and although many people objected, such as
Bishoff and Triple H, the Pay-Per-View
was to proceed. One of the first votes
which was announced was who would
be competing against Triple H for the
World Heavyweight Title, either Shawn

The political overtones of this book
are obvious. It is a clear endorsement
of the American right to bear arms. The
idea being, if you can own a gun, and
someone violates your rights, you can
just shoot them. I can't help but wonder why roving gangs haven't bought
weaponshop guns and just steal and terrorize as they will, which is more akin
to what human nature leads one to suspect if you give random people incredibly powerful weapons. Although I disagree with this political statement, and
am slightly leery of the almost omnipotent power and virtue of the weapon
shops in this novel, it is still one of my
favorites. The reason I enjoyed this
book was for the sense of the fantastic
that pervades it. This is not our world,
and science has advanced enough that
it appears almost magical. The world is
rich and vibrant, with full of unexpected
twists. It is one of the best-realized cultures in science fiction ever produced.
While this book has its share of faults, it
still holds a place as a book that will engage you and fascinate you with every
page. =]

Guerilla City features some top
producers, Jazze Pha, Carlos
Broady, Red Spyda Fred Wreck.
The CD also features some good
collaborations, Mario Winans,
Beenie Man, and Nate Dogg.
The thing I find with this album
there are a couple of really great
tracks, but some of them are just
mediocre at best. But Guerilla has
great flow when he lay’s down his
lyrics. And then when you add
them to some pretty good beats
you obviously get a couple of good
songs. The two singles that most
people have heard from Guerilla
are
“Guerilla
Nasty”
and
“Compton”. My I personally prefer his first single “Guerilla Nasty”,
it features an amazing beat and
some solid lyrics. In my opinion
the other really good song is
“What We gonna do”, this song as a
decent beat, but some solid lyrics
and an irresistible verse by Nate
Dogg.
Flair, ending any doubt that the twenty
four year old was truly the legend killer.
Following the match, Orton shook
Flair’s hand, in respect of his former
comrade. Kane was left a bleeding mess,
taken out of the ring by stretcher, following his defeat at the hands of Snitsky,
who used chains and a steel chair to
defeat the big red machine. Trish Stratus retained her title, wearing a schoolgirl uniform.
There are two songs that I don’t
really like, the first “Trixxx”. On
this track Guerilla offers some decent lyrics and the beats aright. But
I just don’t like the chorus. And the
other song that I don’t like is “Say
What” I find both the lyrics and
beat to be sub-par.
Shelton Benjamin defeated Chris
Jericho, after escaping the walls of Jericho, and pulling off a T-Bone suplex.
After the hard fought and strategic
match, Banjamin stood before the
former champion, holding the belt. Jericho then took it from his hands and
placed it on Benjamin’s shoulder, shook
his hand, and left the ring. Jericho was
then defeated on Raw, the next Monday in a taboo Tuesday rematch.
All in all it is a decent debut album, some good songs, some not
so good. Some people say that this
is the biggest debut album in
awhile, but honestly I think that
Kanye West’s “College Dropout”
was a much better debut album.
But then again that’s just my opinion.
Finally, came the match for the
World Heavy Weight title. Either Shawn
Micheals, Chris Benoit or Edge were to
be voted into a match against Triple H
for his title, and the other two would
face La Resistance in a tag match for the
world tag team championship. HBK
won the vote, but lost the match, due to
a knee injury. Edge and Benoit faced La
resistance, but Edge wasn’t too impressed with this consolation prize,
abandoning his teammate, who defeated La Resistance single handedly.

thing that anyone will notice when

between Guerilla and BIG, for example Guerilla does not have the
lyrical charm of BIG. But then

They proceed to push him from the
weapon shop to fly through time like a
yo-yo on a string, flying further and further into the future and the past. After
which, we don’t hear anything at all
about him until the very end of the
book, at which point he dies. Needless
to say, this plot element appears a tad
incongruous, and it’s not alone. This
book includes an immortal man, a stock
market scam involving time travel, and
a host of other unlikely elements. The
plot appears mostly superfluous to this
books, and the sequence of events is not
the selling point.

that runs rampant through it. Every
level of the society is full of unscrupulous people trying to cheat each other
and any honest citizens. The only way
to protect yourself is to have a weapon
shop gun, and stand up for your rights.
The rest of the plot is simply an exposition of this theme.
This time around I have a true
classic, by that master of science fiction, A.E. Van Voght. He is one of those
who is credited with ushering in the
golden age of science fiction. This work
is one of the ones he is better known
for, “The Weapon Shops of Isher.” This
book is a widely read work of science
fiction, despite its obvious political
overtones.

Both John Abbott soccer teams have
qualified for the 2004 Provincial Championships that will be hosted by
Champlain
College
St-Lambert
at
Laurier Park in Longueuil this weekend.
On the men’s side the Islanders played
very well in the most balanced tournament ever. After 2 days of play all 4
teams were tied with 1-1 records. In the
final game on Sunday the Islanders
needed to win in order to be crowned
tournament champions for the first time
since 1988. Unfortunately the much
improved Islanders ran into a very hot
shooting Durham College team and lost
101-85. Tournament all-star Marvin
Bazile led the Isles with 20 points.
The Islanders men’s team lost only one
game this season but still finished third
with a 5-1-4 record and will play Saturday in one semi-final against second
place Ahuntsic. At home this past Saturday the Isles blasted last place
Rosemont 11-0. Eric Cesari, Racim
Chitti, Omar Kamel and David Sabini
all had 2 goals each while singles went
to Sam Ahmadi, Shawn Amarasekera
and Sami Sries.
With a 2-1 record, the U. King’s College
from Halifax were named champions;
the same team the Islanders beat 80-65
on Saturday night. Bazile and David
Bergman each had 13 points and Kyle
Bernard chipped in12. Bergman had 20
points in an 80-72 loss to Seneca on Friday night.
They closed out the regular season schedule on Sunday with a 1-1 tie with first
place Champlain. Chitti scored the
Abbott goal.
Meanwhile the Lady Islanders blanked
Champlain 5-0. They finished up in second place with a 5-2-1 record and will
play Dawson in their semi-final.
MEN’S RUGBY WINS
The Islander rugby won a hard fought
battle with the McGill B team on Thursday 12-5. Chris Palmer had both the
tries for the Islanders and Bryce
Thomassin added one conversion.
JOHN ABBOTT INVITATIONAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Both John Abbott basketball teams came
close to winning their own tournament
this past weekend. For the fourth
straight year the Lady Islanders and
Edouard-Montpetit battled on Sunday for
the championship and the Lynx finally
prevailed 65-62 in a very tight match.
Tournament all-stars Catherine Parent
and Rikki Bowles led the Lady Islanders
with 17 and 15 respectively. The Lynx
were led by tournament MVP Marie-Eve
Lemoine with 18 points.

Laurie Chamber was the “go to girl” for

in the Carleton University Tournament
on Saturday in Ottawa and they lost
their first game against the Ottawa Lacrosse Club (OLC) Team 12-1. They had
greatly improved from the St. Andrew’s
tournament as they added several key
Black Sheep players. The Black Sheep
recently finished in third place in the
Canadian National Field Lacrosse Championships.
Defence committed only a few errors all
game – thought they proved to be costly.
Stephanie “Wrong Way” Steeves had 4
flags, 2 knockdowns, and 1 interception,
Lisa Jones had one interception, and
Angie Perrier also added one along with
5 flags. Rusher Maggie “Megabyte”
Charbonneau had 3 QB sacks.
In their second game they tied Carleton
Junior Varsity 8-8 and then lost their
third game against Champlain 5-4.
Champlain had the lead only for the last
2 minutes of the game.
In the bronze medal match against the
Carleton Ravens Varsity team injuries
and 4 games in 7 hours just caught up
to the Isles in a 8-1 loss.
On Saturday the Islanders tied first place
in Section B Andre Grasset in a defensive battle 6-6. QB Bienz threw well, however the hands on offence struggled as
she completed 20 of 45 passes for 270
yards. Jones made some key catches and
was 5/6 on the day for 48 yards. Vanessa
Hage-Moussa had 5 catches for 63 yards.
The lone TD came as the Islanders were
jammed on their 5 yard line. Bienz hit
Maria Delavaud on a 20 yard pass which
she ran the whole field for a score.
Overall the tournament was a huge success as JAC easily could have won 2 out
of the 4 games they played, showing vast
improvements in the defensive zone.
Great defensive play was shown by
Donny Fraser, Daniel Bachner, Matt
Chicillitti, Cornelius Jung and their socalled quarterback, the goalie, Keron
White.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Defence played well, stopping Grasset in
the red zone on a number of occasions.
Perrier had 8 flags and 1 knockdown,
Pierre had 3 flags and 3 knockdowns.
Besner came away with 3 QB sacks. The
Islanders have made the playoffs and
will play Edouard Montpetit Saturday
October 30 th in a quarterfinal game.
The Lady Islanders skated to a pair of
victories this past weekend. On Friday
night Karine Dumont, Kelly Feehan and
Melanie Veilleux all scored in a 3-1 exhibition win over Rive-Sud Junior A.
The next night Cindy Fortin picked up
her first career shutout at John Abbott
as the Lady Isles shutout Marie-Victorin

Catherine Rochon all scored goals.
