After a careful counting of ballots, the
Student Union of John Abbott College
has announced the official results of the
vote to conduct a one-day strike to protest
the Charest government’s changes to the
loan and bursary program.
The proposal was defeated by a margin
of 237 votes, with 844 total votes being
counted including one spoiled, which scrutineers indicated was blank. The vote was
widely expected to fail after an agreement
was reached between the government and
two of the three major student groups that
restored the bulk of the funding to the
bursary program, largely eliminating the
reason to proceed to a full-scale protest.
Most students in favour of a strike were
predictably disappointed by the results, but
most nevertheless seemed content with the
deal reached.
“The student body has spoken. We find
that they accepted the offer; we were happy
with the feedback and agree with them that
the government’s new offer is much preferable to the old system,” stated SUJAC
Vice-President Internal Joshua Wald. The

Scattered in various rooms and hidden
in several hallways are the clubs that keep a
number of John Abbott College students
busy throughout the year. Offering a chance
to meet new people and discover new talents, whether it be chatting about a favourite musical group on CSKY, the college radio station, or discussing a favourite video
game in the gamers room, these clubs are
definitely a positive addition to the social
scene at Abbott.
One such club is the Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC), which has arguably made
the 2004-2005 school year its most productive in recent years. Not only has the
club increased its membership and organized several trips they have also used their
talents to contribute to the community.

Outdoor Education Program, the OAC
aims to show students the basics and the
joys of outdoor activities. However, a much
deeper bond has been fostered within this
tight knit group, which happens to be very
popular among german exchange students.

Peter Swinton, the OAC’s president, is
extremely proud of that fact. “I get a sense
from some of the members that what goes
on may change lives and I couldn’t be
anymore proud to be part of a group that
has had that effect on people.” The science
student adds that the community work that
the club has done has only strengthened
the bonds. The work, which has included
helping clear trails in the Adirondacks, gives
students an opportunity to do what they
love while helping others.
The enthusiasts took this philosophy
to heart when they organized a rock-climbing competition. The event, held at the beginning of the winter semester, was part
of a SUJAC headed Tsunami relief
fundraiser. All JAC clubs were asked to
come up with a way to raise money for the
cause and the OAC successfully raised the
most money. The event was so well received
that a second competition is in the works.

on April 29th and will donate the proceeds
to breast cancer research through The Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Centre.

activities on and around campus. Every

to tackle the rock-climbing wall, while others try out their canoe and kayaking skills in
the Casgrain pool. During the week, they
visit bigger indoor rock-climbing facilities
in Montreal. They put all their skills to use
by organizing adventures, including an iceclimbing trip at Mont-Tremblant park,
which OAC Executive Allison Moore notes
was a first in Abbott history. Other trips
have included a snowshoeing day trip, winter camping and cross country skiing.
Besides getting to experience all sorts
of adventures, what all members seem to
agree on unanimously is that the rewards
are numerous and they go well beyond
physical well-being. Friendships are forged
and trust is built. The group of students,
most of whom, in the beginning, had
nothing more than a sense of adventure in
common, has proved how effective and
rewarding student involvement can be.

representing primarily French CEGEPs,

of increased fees, tuition, and specialization as the government proceeds with its
restructuring program, which they claim
undermine the integrity of the system and
might lead to even more dire consequences
for less affluent students who rely on the
loans and bursaries system.
The student body is divided over the
strike issue, with the two groups both
claiming that the action, or inaction, will be
detrimental to the student population in
one way or another. Proponents of the
strike originally argued that even a symbolic gesture would show our solidarity
with the other CEGEPs and hit the government in one of its stronghold regions.
Opponents have argued that it would extend the semester, likely disrupt the final
exam schedule, and amount to nothing
more than a show for the media.
In the end, however, both sides' arguments proved moot after the deal was
reached by the FECQ and FEUQ with Minister of Education Jean-Marc Fournier that
had the government retreating from the

Now that the student strike issue
has been resolved, we can all turn our
attention to more important issues.

even though we avoided the semester
being extended because of the bursary
conflict, we might still have extra days
tacked on to make up for the days of
teacher and support staff strikes. This
is an especially large pain for science
students, with our exam schedule being pushed around. I don't have an
opinion on the teachers position, but
it will certainly be a pain for students
if the days do need to be made up.

port three inquiries of public, parliamentary and criminal investigations
have been launched revealing that over
$100 million was spent in the sponsorship program in Quebec. Two other
inquires have also been launched by
the federal government which include
the recover of the lost money and how
some of Canada’s crown corporations
became involved.
In court this week Alain Renaud
a former lobbyist testified that contracts in the scandal were sent to the
Prime Minister’s Office for approval.
Mr. Renaud latter proceeded to implicate Paul Martin’s assistant at the time

Canada's Sponsorship Scandal

As time passes the scandle becomes more complicated and intertwined in lies almost making it impossible to distinguish lie from truth.
However Canadian’s will have to wait
to see what will come of these judicial
proceedings and whether the money

Passing of
Pope

It will be a week Saturday since the
passing of John Paul II, leader of the Catholic
Church. After twenty six years of leading the
faithful, John Paul II passed away at 9:37 PM in
his Vatican apartment, after suffering from many
complications as his body shut down slowly.
Though he may no longer be with us in person
he remains in spirit, leaving a message of not
being afraid. John Paul II, who is one of the
longest reigning Pope's in history, who has accomplished a great deal and is now being called
for saint hood by individuals from around the
world, which one could not help to hear at his
funeral proceedings which gathered an estimated
one million people to Rome while millions of
others gathered around their televisions. However life must go on, and in the process the
world awaits their new leader who will guide
them. The next Pope will be picked from about
118 members of the College of Cardinals under
the age of 80. The voting process will be slightly
different due to the change the Pope had placed
years earlier. This will take place after about a
week of “dead locked votes” will switch over to
a simple majority. The voting is said to begin a
week Monday and will run until a cloud of white
smoke is seen coming from the Vatican where
on lookers will know that a new Pope has been
elected. Until then, Catholics wait in anticipation
as one of our very own Cardinal’s of Quebec is
said to be on a top 20 list according to Vatican
Experts.
As many of you probably
know, the vote on whether or not to
hold a student strike over the cuts to
the bursaries program was held last
Monday and Tuesday here at
Abbott. As it turned out, the
day before the vote the government made a new offer to
the students which many of
the striking CEGEPs accepted
in principle so John Abbott
students were voting on
whether or not to accept the
government’s new proposal.
When all the votes where tallied, the turnout was good
with more then 800 students
having voted. The numbers
were: 540 students against the
strike, 303 for the strike and
one spoiled ballot so the Student Union of John Abbott
College will not be going on
strike. For those of you who
haven’t been following the
loans/bursaries story in the
news and are wondering what exactly
the government’s new offer entails,
read on.
The initial announcement by the
government was that 103 million dollars was being moved from bursaries

million dollars to the bursaries program next year and the full 103 million

Beginnings and The half-masted flags

To start off, hello, for that is the customary way to begin. Onwards, once, long
ago in the old days of Bandersnatch, when
stuff happened and people did things,
there was a person who wrote a rant for
every issue of this wonderful paper. His
witty words fnord danced off the page and
amused many…or something like that. His
amusing journals can still be read, if one
knows where to look, and are of endless
amusement to yours truly.
This week I will attempt, hopefully not
in vain, to take up the flaming torch of
semi-pointless ranting. May I do justice to
my inspiration and his legacy. Also, one
might ask why I would start up a column
in the 6th issue of the semester. The answer
to this is simple. In Discordianism the
number 5 is very holy, so I had to wait 5
issues before I began writing. Now, off to

Waste. Garbage. Rubbish. Trash.
Let us examine our collective
dumpsters, shall we? Why do we
use such awful words? Most of the
time, many of these things we throw
out are in fact still very useful.
Let’s take for example a
simple banana peel. Obviously, eating
it is not really an option, but you are
welcome to try if that’s your cup of
tea. Another choice is to use it as a
hilarious trap for one of your friends
to slip on cartoon-like. Well, maybe
not. Nevertheless, it does contain
many beneficial nutrients. But how
can we use these nutrients for
something useful without eating it?
Ah, yes! We can feed it to the worms.
Composting any biodegradable waste such
as foodstuff can help release their nutrients
and create a very rich soil for your plants.
Go to your local garden store and ask for a
composting kit. You will feel proud that you
are helping make your plants grow strong
and that you are reducing waste at the same
time!

Pope John Paul II died last Saturday,
as anyone who has any contact with the
rest of the world will know. A great man
who did many great things passed away
while so many hundreds of thousands of
people watch all over the globe. People cried
and wailed, bowed their heads and lowered their flags. Yes, much like after 9/11
and similar tragedies, flags far and wide
were brought down to half-mast in respect
for the great man. Whether there is one
standing alone, the flag above John Abbot
or the many flags for all the different countries represented on the front lawns of large
companies or organizations, the flags were
all at half-mast.
Which bring one to wonder, who has
the job of lowering these flags? Do they
have this one job and none other’s? Are
they the custodians who are told to do such
jobs? All these question and more pop into
Why stop there. We all have
wardrobes stuffed with last season’s fashions
or clothes that have seen better days. In
any case, we need the real estate space.
Why ditch them, when we could easily trade
some with one of our friends. An even better
option is to donate your unwanted threads
to a charity of your choice. Clothes collection
bins are located everywhere and should be
very easy to find! For example, I know there
is a collection bin in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue,
near the train station. In any case, there is
always someone who needs these clothes.
They are a huge help during our cold winters!

One way or another it must that someone has to do it. Perhaps there is one person who must go out side, go up to the
flagpole and lower the flags. There’s also
the need, if there is more than one flag, to
get them all at the same level. Now, a very
ingenious professional flag half-master
would find a way to get the flags to only go
down a certain amount, or have markers
on the rope to avoid such inconvenience as
trying to get them all even without aids. A
proper flag half-master will also have the
risk of having to lower the flags in rather
unpleasant weather.
Obviously we can now fully realize the
troubles of such a job and give more respect to such an honorable profession…
if we can accept the possibility that this
task takes a single man to do so. If we
accept instead that it would be the job of a
custodian than there is a whole new world
of questions to answer and explore.
If it were indeed a custodian then
would they find this job to be an honor or
The basic point I am trying to make
is that we should eliminate the idea of waste
from our consciousness. If you ever lack
any inspiration, you don’t have to look far.
Just take a walk in the park and observe
nature for a bit. Dead leaves become fertilizer
for the trees and grass or food for insects.
Dead animals become nutritious meal for
insects or bacteria. You can even
notice some mushrooms feasting
on a dead tree! Everything is
recycled. The beauty is that it is all
needed. The grass needs the dead
leaves and the insects love their
dead animals. To quote a great
French scientist, Lavoisier once said:
“In nature nothing is created,
nothing is lost, all is transformed”.
So next time you launch something
towards a garbage can, think about
this: Nothing is waste. If you are
interested in this idea, you can try
reading “Cradle to Cradle” by
William A. McDonough. Also, those
who go through printer ink cartridges as if
they were juice boxes, there is a very great
service running from the John Abbott book
store available to you. Basically, you give
them your empty cartridges and they will
refill them at about half the price of buying
new ones! This helps the environment too,
since they require about a thousand years
to decompose.

Would it simply be a burden to go lowering flags? Would a custodian have time to
think up the ingenious systems to make
lowering the flags easier? If you think of it
a custodian would probably not have the
time to spend thinking up ways to get the
flags even.
So, some poor, over worked custodians are out there lowering the flags all over
the country and then having go back, make
some more even if he failed to do so, then
eventually go back and put them all back
up. I believe that it is a beautiful sign of
respect… but honestly people, what are we
doing to our hard working men and
women?
Next time you see a flag lowered, do
give a moment to reflect on why it is lowered, pray for those who the flags have been
lowered, and then give another moment
to think of who exactly lowered that
flag…or in the case of a company like Future on Hymus near St Jean, about 20 flags
or so, and give thanks that you don’t have
to.

Hello again to all you nymphs out
there! Today we’re going to get right
into it! The topic being: Kinky Sex
Ideas. What do I mean by “kinky sex
ideas”? Well basically these are different options that you can try in order to
make sex more interesting. Often times
although the outcome of sex (or
should I say the outcum) may be great,
the sex itself really wasn’t that exciting.
This can often happen to long term
couples or even people that are just very
experienced and have sex often. Now I
know people say “it is not the journey
that it is important but the destination”
in this case I would say the opposite.
The journey is just as if not more important. Think about it, why do so
many girls have sex yet never have an
orgasm? You’d think if they weren’t
having one that they really wouldn’t be
interested in sex altogether but it’s
something about the actually motions
of sex that turns them on anyway and
makes them want to do it again. Plus,
if you’re really enjoying the act of sex
chances are you’re orgasm will be much
better. Now enough about that! Here
are some ideas to spice up your sex routine. The key here is to talk about it
with your partner before doing it. The
idea or anticipation of having kinky sex
can sometimes be the
actual cause of the excitement as opposed to

Bondage is basically when one person is pleasured without being able to

you don’t have all you need.

there a way we SHOULD be? And why
is it different from the way we ARE?
Why are the things in life we know to
be wrong so attractive, so alluring?

our lives, and we don’t have to fight
alone. A rescue attempt has been made
and an underground, a resistance has
been organized. More letters have
come from Home. Letters about how
to fight, how to love, how to see, how
to serve. How to be all the things we

way things ARE. The prince is Satan.

Looking Eye to Eye with Eye2Eye; an interview with June sixth

I recently got a chance to talk with Doug
Barber, a.k.a. June Sixth, one third of Montreal’s
Best Hip Hop Group, according to the Montreal Mirror’s Reader’s Poll, for the second year in
a row. The artful 26-year-old emcee spoke with
wit and often in metaphors, and is proving to
be a significant part of Montreal’s cultural scene.
MM: Growing up, did you dream of being
a rap artist? Did you grow up in an artistic/
musical environment?
JS: I would mostly dream of the basement
in one of my old homes, where I grew up. It
was dark and cold, and I was very afraid to go
down there, but I kept dreaming about it. The
washing machine would open its door and talk
to me, and tell me terrible things, and the dryer
would laugh. I hated the dryer; he was such a
“yes man”, the Ed McMahon of the furnace
room. Music was always around me; my family
loves music.
MM: The group is said to have only become serious in 2001, when you started writing
down your rhymes. Is it then that you started
recording, and if so, how did you go about that?
JS: We would record freestyles on Second
Thoughts brother’s tape recorder he had left over
from some journalism class. This thing was shit,
we used to go out at night and carry it around
like a purse; it had a sponge mic and everything.
It also had a speed adjuster that we would use to
slow down or quicken our raps. It made me
laugh so hard one night I bit my tongue and
couldn’t eat for a week. Then we had friend who
fell into this musical equipment, or did it fall into
him, anyway, we went over to his place one night
and just spit. The next week I bought a bunch
of gear we set it up in Second Thought’s crib,
and the rest is history.
MM: Also, it was your idea to incorporate
theatrics into your music, into a veritable hiphopera, or like you have said, a Broadway musical. Could you descrive how this idea came about?
JS: I was working with a theatre company
and going to acting school, when I went over to
Second Thought’s crib on the west island, we
had a few beers and he said, “You know, I’ve
started writing some raps.” So we went upstairs
and threw on some instrumentals, and he kicked
them to me, and as you know, he’s a f**king
talented artist, so he really just blew me away
with how clever and plot driven every verse was.
So I went home and wrote a play that night. The
next day I showed up at his house with a script
and a proposal.
MM: Which was?
JS: (Laughs) Which was “You outta take
The story of Faust has been retold

adapt to the new technology. The story

into ash. He despairs of ever finding
knowledge, because the books of the
greatest minds of the past are all
flawed. Just as he despairs of ever finding knowledge, he is contacted by an
alien

Mephistopheles. This entity explains

of truth versus illusion. Which is really preferable, the truth that causes
harm or the lie that preserves order? It
also shows the corrupting influence of
both power and knowledge. We watch
as Jack Faust goes from an idealistic
scholar, to a ruthless industrialist, to a
bitter and broken man at the end of

your rapping to the stage, if it can happen on the
page, then it can happen in the hearts of the
crowd, and you gotta play it loud, you gotta do
it now, and no I don’t wanna hear about your
doubts, you’ll never know until you try, and
there, I knew we were seeing Eye 2 Eye.”
MM: Why/how do you think this style gives
you an edge in thei increasingly generic rap game?
JS: Not many people do it. We don’t do it
all the time either, just for the Eye 2 Eye shows,
and it gives people something new. It’s now a
story with an ending, people can relate to that. A
lot of our fans don’t even listen to rap music
but love it when we do it, because it has a meaning.
MM: This has remained a concept relatively
unique to your group, how would you feel about
anyone following in your proverbial footsteps?
JS: There’s a few kids that started to incorporate theatrics in their shows, I think it’s great.
I’m flattered.
MM: Do you ever feel competition with any
other rap groups?
JS: Never. Basically, I compete with myself.
I’m always trying to better my last verse.
MM: You’ve worked with many notable
artists such as Choclair, Maestro, Bless, Les
Architeks, even boxer Otis Grant. Which other
artists would you love to work with?
JS: Prince, Jay-z, Gza, Em (Eminem),
Warcloud, Dr. Dre, Sam Roberts, Missy Elliott,
Maynard from Tool, and since I recently got a
chance to work with D-shade from Shades of
Culture on the track “Business As Usual,” I can
scratch him off the list.
Oh and of course Sarah McLaughlin, one
of the best songwriters in the world, and the
voice of an angel.
MM: Why don’t you ask Sam Roberts to
do a song with you since you guys grew up
together? Or have you already?
JS: (Laughs) It’s ironic, because Sam’s old
band was called Sam Roberts and the Secret
Weapon; now I refer to Sammy as my secret
weapon. I told him I was going to ask him for a
favor, but when the time was right. I want to
make it a good one (laughs again). He said no
problem obviously. He’s a great guy, just an awesome dude, that whole family is just incredible.
I love them all.
MM: Anything new coming up?
JS: Facts of War (a mixtape) is to be released
in late December. We will have a full downloadable
CD off our website in the early New Year. A
Memo/Meta4ce vinyl will be released in the
spring, and an ICM album this summer. And
of course the Eye 2 Eye album, which is in
progress now, and loads of stuff in between. So
keep your eyes peeled for the eyes!

his major characters, and
tracks the fall from grace of
Faust. You share Faust’s triumph, cringe at his depravities, and share his overwhelming sadness as he realizes what has become of
him. It is this pathos that
infuses the book, which
makes it worth reading. This
book is an interesting play on
an old story. It asks us to
reexamine many of the things
that science fiction takes for
granted, and combines it with
strong characterization. Over all an effective piece of storytelling.

On the road to Wrestlemania 21,
the most dominant forces in the
WWE, Evolution, finaly broke apart,
with Batista challenging Triple H for
the World Heavyweight title. Batista
gained all the experience he could from
Evolution, then he destroyed it. Triple H’s for mer protégé ended The
Game’s 10th world championship reign
Sunday at STAPLES Center, winning
the World Heavyweight Championship with a crushing Batista Bomb. The
Cerebral Assassin controlled much of
the epic WrestleMania main event, exhausting his arsenal of offense and
leaving it all in the ring. After involvement from Evolution’s Ric Flair, Triple H pulled out all the stops – using a
low blow and a foreign object to set
up his patented finisher. Not on this
night.
Batista remarkably powered out of
the Pedigree, then reversed it into a jawdropping modified slam. It was something Triple H never expected, and it
took the wind right out of him. The

went for the kill with a moonsault, only
to have HBK crawl forward, sending
Angle crashing to the mat. Angle then
connected with an Angle slam from the
top rope with HBK amazingly escaping again.
HBK would finally hit Sweet Chin
Music, but Angle, not to be outdone,
barely kicked out. With both men exhausted, Angle somehow managed to
apply the ankle lock one last fateful
time for the victory.

Now that the conflict is settled I’d like
to finally voice my opinion once and
for all, regardless of controversy.
Many things are on my mind for
this issue: the pope’s recent demise, the
end of the student bursary conflict,
and the stress of exams and research
essays are particularly on the agenda this
time around.
First of all I wish to send my sympathies to the Catholic Church on the
recent loss of a great pilgrim: John
Paul II (or Giovanni Paolo II as the
Romans call him). John Paul was in
my opinion and the opinion of many,
the greatest pope the church has ever
had and so good in fact, that he had
the distinct honour of being buried
beside St. Peter under the Vatican.
Another thing that struck me, because I had been having similar
thoughts, is when the locals interrupted the late pontiff ’s funeral shouting “Santo, santo subito” meaning “a
saint, now.” Though many may see an
immediate beatification as an act of
heresy or even impulsive stupidity I
have to admit I had exactly the same
thought the minute I had learned of

This past season, I noticed how the furtrimmed styles came back, trying to recapture the
40’s glamour. I liked the class and grace it brought,
but the usage of REAL fur made me uncomfortable.
Whenever I passed someone wearing real
fur, I couldn’t help but wonder, what creature
had to sacrifice its life, and skin, to give someone
fur that they didn’t need? While many of you
know the facts of the fur-trade business, and
possibly heard countless times people preaching
you not to wear it at all, I think it’s time that
some of the truth (that many media corporations refuse to leak out) finally made it’s appearance.
Over half of the fur supplies come from
China. What’s even more shocking is that some
of ‘fox’ fur perhaps on your coat may not be fox
fur, but cat fur! Chinese fur farms have been
reportedly using cat and dog’s fur to replace the
more expensive white fox and chinchilla fur, in
order to cut down production costs and raise
their greedy profits. So, next time you go shopping with your friends, and see a real fur trimmed
coat, think about your pet cat or dog (and your
wallet, because honey, those things can cost up
to 100$ per coat!). How would you feel if Fido
had been bludgeoned to death, or electrocuted,
or skinned while still alive, only to give up their

Moving right along, I would like
to express my gratitude to the French
CEGEPS and universities who were on
strike, some of them for six weeks.
Also to the few English colleges and
universities who went out in support
of the francophone CEGEPS such as
C o n c o r d i a , Va n i e r, D aw s o n , a n d
Marianopolis. I am glad to see that
the conflict is solved, however I do
have one major concern regarding John
Abbott’s involvement in the movement, or lack thereof.
During this entire student loans
and bursaries conflict, I have voiced my
one pro-protest opinion in a field of
life for someone’s sense of style?
It’s also sad to say that Jennifer Lopez (one
of my favorite artists) unleashed her newest fashion line, called Sweetface, but it’s anything but
sweet! Garments are trimmed with white fox
fur, trying to make it seem all high-end, but it’s
the most grisly and disgusting thing to do. Many other
companies, such as Wet Seal,
use fur in their line, but

However, many designers have given fur the
cold shoulder. Stella
McCartney, Vivienne
Westwood,
Todd
Oldham, Marc Bouwer
have turned their backs on
it, and are using synthetic made faux fur to trim their
outfits. It’s also less costly,
because you have to pay the
executioners of the animals
tons of bucks to get those
soft furs that were skinned
from some poor animals.
It’s also time for humans to turn their back on
fur. Many, many centuries
ago, when we had no synthetic fur or winter
coats packed with the heat-retaining materials.

The whole time I was switching
back and forth between pro-strike and
anti-strike because my mind changed
every time I received new information.
Most of the time though I was prostrike and what annoys me the most
about our situation is that it took
SUJAC and congress so long to decide
to call a vote that we finally voted after
the conflict had been settled.
Now I ask my readers, how bad
does Abbott look now? When we say
that Marianopolis, a private college
where only fifteen percent of the students rely on student loans and bursaries went out for a day in the blink of
an eye after a vote in a general assembly, but John Abbott took over six
weeks to finally decide to call a vote?
I am perfectly aware that a new
strike procedure has just recently been
adopted, but please, SUJAC executives
told me for one of my recent articles
that the strike had been discussed over
and over again with congress and at
the executive meetings. They discussed what was being proposed to the
colleges and what would be expected
of us if the proposal went through.
My question is, why didn't SUJAC
call a general assembly, or a few assemblies to make Abbott students aware
of what is going on, and then have a
general vote on the issue? The strike
procedure is great, but I think it is too
formal and takes too long, look at what
happened with the bursary strike is that
the Liberals had time to settle while
SUJAC was putting the vote together,
collecting petitions and so on. I mean
not to criticize SUJAC, but I still maintain my opinion that the way the process is setup it takes way too long.
Finally I move into the stress of
exams and final essays. I need not go
through all this because I think by now
we all know exactly how stressful exams and final essays can get when
you've put if off as long as you could
but the night before you try to pull
together a whole MLA, cited, undergraduate style essay composed of fifteen hundred words and you totally
stress out and go to bed at three in the
morning to get up at seven. Just hang
in there! Four more weeks left and the
essay period is pretty much over after
this week.

- Use anti-fur stickers to decorate your locker

- Write complaint letters to companies and
start a petition to ban the usage of fur. It’s really
successful. Forever 21 recently took out the usage of real fur in its clothing because many people were complaining of this cruel act.
- If they’re not in a rush, confront the people who are wearing real fur and report the facts
to them about what happened to the animals
that had to die for the tacky coat they’re wearing.
- www.peta.com is holding an interesting
campaign. If you want to rid of your closet of
furry things, don’t throw it away. Give it away!

to homeless people who can’t afford a coat, and
to keep them warm in our subzero temperatures. Send them to:

throw the red paint at a
fur wearing person. That
is so gauche and you’ll
most likely end up with
a lawsuit and one angry

highly doubt the red
paint will revive the dead

Yes, this obituary is long overdue
but before I begin, I’d like to tell you a
little story, a story about dignity. It all
began with some dudes called The
Ramones and the fact that they started
a whole different way
of playing music, dressing and living. Fast forward to the 1990’s and
you’ve got tons and
tons of bands like the
Casualties, Rancid,
Green Day, The Misfits
paying homage to the
genre with some amazing music, something
to get the listener away from the formulated pop-rock people were forced
to deal with at the time.Then things
start going wrong...Record labels began looking at punk as a brand new
thing to start exploiting so the labels
got busy creating cheap knock-off
bands like Sum41, Good Charlotte,
MXPX, NOFX, and basically any band
under Epitaph records. These bands
tried to steal the glory of 1990’s bands
that kicked arse while at the same time
appealing to both the punk and pop.
The sad part is, they did.Which brings
us to the now, with Emo and Hardcore
and Screamo and any other perversion
of the genre I may have forgotten.
Now don’t get me wrong, I like all
kinds of music, classical, metal, rock,
pop, ska you get my point. It’s just
that when a “new punk fad” comes out
that’s based around looking sad but
feeling good on the inside, it’s just so
wrong it makes me sick. Take for instance Good Charlotte, the first real
emo band, their songs
usually involve them
singing about how sad
they are that their girlfriends dumped them
b e c a u s e t h e y ’r e n o t
good enough for them.
Here’s my advice; Get a
haircut and quit whining about how badly
you suck. I am tired of
emo and I will not be silenced any
longer. I don’t care if a bunch of emo
kids find me and floorpunch/windmill me to death. to say is that Punk is
dead and buried, and for that reason I
truly am saddened, not the fake saddened one in all the music coming out
these days.Even most of the original
punk bands, have either turned to the
dark side or just plain suck these days.
Punk has died so why can’t the bands
stop hurting me with their garbage. do
it right or don’t do it at all, you decide.
but until then, I’m just going to keep
hoping this goes away like Pokemon
did.
A Look at the Strike Prejudices

While the strike issue is now basically settled, the debate over the issue
has turned up some interesting opinions in the world at large. Those
adults who vocally opposed the student strike often exposed an interesting prejudice in their arguments.
Many times the argument was heard
that students where simply enjoying
skipping classes and being disruptive.
It was heard over and over in opinions articles and columns. One article
even claimed that students where
striking because the bursary cuts cut
into their beer money. The general
attitude was that adolescents where
not capable of understanding the issues at hand. After all, teenagers don’t
care about “issues” or helping fellow
students in financial need. No, all us
teenagers care about is booze and
skipping class, right? This patronizing and insulting prejudice impedes
any real debate about the validity of a
strike.

All gays are flamers; all women are
weak; all jocks are assholes; all Emo
kids cut themselves. If I’ve offended
someone, and it’s almost impossible
that I haven’t, then I’ve accomplished
what I’ve set out to do. Make no mistake, this is not a commentary on the
social injustices that accompany the
aforementioned labels, nor is it lecture
on how we should all get along. This
is merely an observation, some scrutiny concerning the hypocritical liberal
repression that runs rampant in society.
I am not so naïve as to claim that
every stereotype is necessarily wrong,
but it does seem that it is not the fault
of our society, but rather our own, and
our unconscious desire to conform,
even to an anti-conformist group. The
best example is the music scene. Every
day we see punks, Goths, rappers (and
wiggers), rockers, pop-tarts, and the
list goes on. It seems perverse that we
can easily identify something as personal as musical preference by simply
glancing at the outward appearance,
and yet how else do we identify them?
Don’t get me wrong, I am in no way
denouncing all music scenes, but I am
however strictly against those who con-

in the time and effort to do this right.
This was not a group of students out
to play hooky; it was a protest.
Student activism has a long and

limit ourselves to one way of thinking
and acting, that is causing havoc within
the universality that is music. By only
allowing ourselves to be subjected to
set and confined experiences, we cut
ourselves off from our very humanity,
from our potential for growth. And
the repercussions? Do the classical
music lovers have to now dress the part,
powdered wigs and all? Until we free
ourselves of our confining mindsets,
we can’t begin to conceptualize a more
accepting society. Conformity is an illusion, and, like all illusions, it is all in
the mind.

deal. The more militant students proceeded to destroy all their credibility
by first refusing to end the strikes, and
then actually targeting the offices of
one of the other student unions. It is
acts like this that convince some that
all students are like this. These students, after attaining their stated goal,
continue to be on strike, jeopardizing
their year. They also continue to engage in iconoclastic acts of vandalism
and disruption. These are the students
who give the rest of the strikers a bad
name.
To discredit the entire strike movement because of the actions of a few
extremists is both unfair and inaccurate. The root of these comments is
the general stereotype that students are
too apathetic to care about the real issues. This attitude is not extended to
other professions that go on strike. For
example, the teachers unions are currently holding strikes to try and pressure the government in the negotiation of their collective agreement. Just
watch, and see if anyone says they are
just on strike because they need more
money for beer. I think not. This is a
prejudice against adolescents alone,
and a clear example of ageism at its
worst.
