Box 1507 Abbeville, LA 70511-1507 website: stmarymagdalenparish.org Telephone: 337-893-0244 From the Pastor HonoringtheFamily Do you want to make a difference in the world? Do you want to leave your mark on history? Then be a good father or mother. The weekend after Christmas is always devoted to “The Holy Family”. Study after study shows that children make out better in life when they are raised in a stable home with a loving father and mother. No other institution in society can shape and form children better than families can. When families fail, the community as a whole suffers because of it. Because of so many problems in our world today, let’s pray that the family can again become the cornerstone of both the church and society, a place where good fathers and mothers provide a tremendous service to our world. No other role is more effective or more meaningful in strengthening our society. WordfortheDay Grant me daily the grace of gratitude, to be thankful for all my many gifts, and so be freed from artificial needs, that I might lead a joyful, simple life. Baby Bottle Campaign Pro-Life Baby Bottle Campaign January 23rd –24th You can be part of helping to end abortion in our community, give hope to a woman facing an unexpected pregnancy and give life to an unborn child. To end abortion it takes more than telling a young women who has an unplanned pregnancy that she should not have an abortion. From a practical standpoint, as well as from a Christian charity standpoint, we must do all in our power to help her through this pregnancy. The Baby Bottle Campaign does this. Through the campaign you can help provide counseling, pregnancy tests, ultrasound exams, adoptions, parenting and nutrition workshops, assistance with baby items and mothers items, chastity programs, post abortion healing and some financial assistance. Baby bottles will be available after all masses the weekend of January 23rd-24th and may be returned the following weekend with a donation. Please be generous to this worthwhile cause. Official Logo—Year of Mercy Edward Hays New Year’s Mass Schedule New Year’s Eve: 5:00 PM New Year’s Day: 7:00 AM, 9:30 AM **No 11:00 AM or 5:30 PM Masses on this day. During New Year’s Holidays there will be no exposition in the chapel. The parish office will close at 1:00PM on New Year’s Eve and reopen on Monday 8:00AM. Happy New Year’s from the staff of St. Mary Magdalen Parish The motto Merciful Like the Father (taken from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure. This logo, approved by Pope Francis, is an important image for the Church - that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost soul, demonstrating that it is the love of Christ that brings to completion the mystery of his incarnation culminating in redemption. The logo has been designed in such a way so as to express the profound way in which the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with a love with the power to change one’s life. On to Eternal Rest Our prayers and sympathy go out to the family of: Lois Sellers What is an Annulment? An annulment is a declaration by the Catholic church that after careful investigation, flaws were discovered in the relationship that prevented it from becoming a sacramental marriage. An annulment is concerned mainly with the personal and spiritual aspects of marriage. It does not “erase” the civil contract, and it does not render the children illegitimate. It merely states that after thorough investigation, the Church has decided that a marriage, as the Church understands marriage was not valid. Merry Christmas!!! “Tis the Season”…STILL! Yes, Christmas season has just begun. It doesn’t end with the arrival Christmas Day, but rather it begins. Although commercially we have been celebrating Christmas for about a month… Doesn’t it seem we are seeing Christmas stuff and hearing the carols on the radio sooner and sooner. This year I actually saw Christmas decorations right next to the Halloween décor in a few stores. Yikes…something is dreadfully wrong with that. Too Soon! The Church observes Christmas season from late in the evening on December 24th until the Feast of the Epiphany on the Sunday after New Year’s Day...Usually somewhere around January 5th or 6th. There are truly 12 Days of Christmas on the Church Calendar. The old Christmas Carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is correct. And, those 12 Days of Christmas don’t start on December 13th and end on the 25th. So don’t throw your trees out yet, and keep your Nativity scenes set. Soak it in…enjoy it…and let it linger a while. We are only at the “Two Turtle Doves…and a Partridge in a Pear Tree.” Christmas has ten days left. Yay!!! Announcements: A special thank you to all of the parishioners, Boy Scouts, Knights of Columbus and members of Life Teen who helped with our parish work day on December 19th. The Pere Megret Center was cleaned and the exterior walls were painted. Thank you especially to Aimee Minvielle Puhekker of Minvielle Lumber, CO. for your efforts in getting us the materials we needed. It was a very successful work day! The Pere Megret Center looks great!!! Registrations for the Mission Trip to Puerto Rico on July 18-23, 2016 are available in the parish office or online at www.holytravels.com.
