Principal’s Update:
The 8th graders got their first taste of SLOHS this week and excitement is beginning to build. We
are getting to the end of the year and students will be busy with projects and finishing up
schoolwork in the next week, followed by a crazy, fun and busy last week. (More so for the 8th
graders, and somewhat for the 7th graders). Please remind your students to keep up their work and
their positive school behavior through the last day- summer is almost here!
If you have volunteered this year at our school, we would love to see you at our Volunteer
Appreciation Tea on Thursday, June 2 from 9-10am. Whether you helped out with copying, 3mile run, PTA, Leadership, Career Day, Band, Cow Eye Dissections, or any other way you lent
your skills to our campus, we would love to see you there. We will have coffee, tea, and treats as
our way of thanking you for all you have done for the school. If you will be available to attend,
please let Teresa Smith know in the office (805)596-4055.
Speaking of the office, we apologize that our attendance voice mail is down. This is a known issue
and one that we are still working on getting fixed. You can reach the attendance office between
7:30 and 4:00 daily.
We hope that everyone has a great Memorial Day Weekend and hope that you all take the time to
honor those who have died in the service of our country.
Look for a special edition of the Lancer Lines early next week that shares our parent survey data
and our California Healthy Kids Survey data.
Wall of Fame Student Recognition Lunch Edition:
Each week teachers nominate students who exemplify scholarship and citizenship and their
names are added to the “Wall of Fame” for the week. This week, teachers invited students to be
recognized at our student recognition lunch. Congratulations to the following students:

a student’s name appears on here for more than one week, it means that student is doing great
things in lots of classes.
Around School:
 Our 8th grade students visited SLOHS to tour the campus and meet the student body. They
attended a senior assembly where they were able to share in the accomplishments of this
year’s graduating class and to hear where seniors had been accepted to colleges.
 8th grade Golden Knight Students spent the morning at the Cal Poly Bowling Alley as a
reward for their outstanding grades for the past three quarters. Students were treated to a
pizza lunch when they arrived back at school.
DUMP YOUR KICKS! And help fund research for pediatric cancer
Do you have old tennis shoes that are too small or you simply don’t have any need for? Don’t let
your old, still usable athletic shoes become part of the 200 million pairs of shoes thrown away
each year.
Bring your sneakers to Laguna Middle School next week starting on Thursday June 1, 2016 and
you can DUNK YOUR KICKS! Your old tennis shoes will be sent to Africa where they are sold
at affordable price in flea markets and bazaars. The money then comes back via Dunk Your Kicks
to the Max Cure Foundation who will get up to a dollar for every pair of shoes sold. The Max
Cure Foundation helps fund research for pediatric cancer.
Qualified Kicks:
-Any form of sneaker, tennis shoe, running, basketball, high tops or canvas athletic shoes (no
cleats).
-No holes or tears
-Rubber soles must be intact
-Please leave in the laces and TIE the shoes together by the laces in a pair or place them in a
plastic bag before Dunking Your Kicks.
Look for the cardboard collection boxes marked DUNK YOUR KICKS on campus next week!
Choir POPS Concert Wednesday Night:
Next Wednesday, June 1, the SLOHS and Laguna Choirs will give their final concert of the year. It
will feature pop songs from the 60s to today! Come out to Laguna at 6:30 for a ride through the
decades! Concert is free and open to the public with welcomed donations at the door!
Student Volunteers Honored!
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only
thing that has.” Margaret Mead
On Thursday, June 2, 2016, the students below will be receiving the Mayor’s Award for Community
Service. Mayor Jan Marx, or her designee, will be at the 8th Grade Awards Night to present students
with the honor. The event begins at 6:30 pm in the Cafeteria. If students would like a personal picture
in front of the stage with the Mayor or her designee, please arrive by 6:15pm and come to the front
near the stage.
Students always ask, “What should I wear?” The appropriate attire for the evening is to dress as a
student would for a nice restaurant, church, temple or a fancy party at a grandparent’s house. There is
no need to go out and buy anything new. Just feel free to dress up a bit more that you normally do for
school. However, for those of you who are coming directly from a sport practice, please feel free to
“come as you are,” or to change into something quickly in the parking lot! It will just be great to have
everyone there!
Again, thank you to all of the students for all of the contributions here on campus and in the
community. Your caring and compassion have made a positive difference!

PTA NEWS
Laguna Middle School PTA Needs YOU!
Laguna Middle School is in need of a Secretary for the 2016-17 school year.
At our last PTA meeting we welcomed Cynthia Hughes as our Treasurer for the 16-17 school
year. Other positions available
include Vice President, Financial Secretary, and Auditor.
If you are a parent who has given 110% to your elementary school PTA, I assure you that a
position at the middle school level requires a lot less time and energy!
Please join us for our last PTA Meeting!
