ORAT is Coming Home!
FMG‘s consultants are supporting an important project at their »home base« to make
Munich Airport fit for the future. The new satellite terminal will significantly boost
capacity at Terminal 2.
© Koch & Partner, Generalplaner Flughafen München
Responding to the swift growth in
passenger numbers at Munich Airport´s
Terminal 2 with an annual capacity limit
of 25 million passengers – already in
2011 the terminal handled 26.5 million
passengers – a new state-of-the-art
terminal building will be established
to handle an additional eleven million
passengers a year.
In less than one decade after the
2003 inauguration of Terminal 2, which
is jointly operated by FMG and Lufthansa,
the terminal had already exceeded its
capacity. This shows that travellers from
all over the world value the excellent service and high quality as well as the ease
of making connections in Munich, Europe‘s No. 1 airport selected by Skytrax.
FMG‘s consulting team will be supporting the start-up phase as well as the
trial operations phase and the transfer
phase of the satellite terminal at Munich
Airport to ensure a successful and
in-time opening of the new terminal at
their »home base« Airport. The satellite is estimated to cost around € 650
million to build and, as with Terminal 2
previously, the FMG and Lufthansa will be
sharing costs 60:40. The new terminal
building was designed as an add-on to
the existing baggage sorting hall on the
apron to the east of Terminal 2 and will
have a total of 52 gates. The satellite will
also have 27 aircraft stands, more than
doubling the number of contact stands
currently available for Terminal 2.
Preparatory work on the satellite was
carried out in the summer of 2011, and
the actual construction work commenced in the spring of 2012. Since the
beginning of 2013, the satellite has
received its facade, and interior fittings
and technical equipment are to follow.
Completion of the new terminal building
is planned for 2015.
The satellite terminal is a functional
element and expansion of MUC‘s T2
without landside transportation links. It
will be equipped with an underground
automated people mover (APM) system
connecting it to Terminal 2. The APM will
have the capacity to carry as many as
9,000 passengers per hour in both directions and has been designed to meet
strict requirements for energy-optimized
transportation and power efficiency.

Current projects in brief
Oman: ORAT support continues for new
airports
FMG continues its operational readiness support to the stakeholders of
Muscat International and Salalah airports in Oman; assisting the stakeholders to produce standard operating procedures, reviewing recruitment of new
employees as well as coordinating the
huge amount of training that is required
for all staff operating in the new airports.
FMG participates in regular onsite committees and task forces with the stakeholders.
In Salalah, walkthrough exercises
have commenced, jointly coordinated
with stakeholders. The exercises have
given stakeholders their first opportunity
to view some of their systems in action
and familiarise themselves with operating procedures.
Aircraft taxi simulation (ATXS) trials
are currently taking place in Muscat, involving simulated runway and taxiway
aircraft movements; enabling stakeholders to verify their procedures, assess
the current status of the runway and taxiways, gather data on expected taxiing
times and familiarise themselves with
the new taxi system, which is far more
complex than in the current airport.
Saudi Arabia: IT, Management, Operational Support
While the construction of the new King
Abdulaziz International Airport is ongoing, the FMG team is providing support
to ICAD, the ICT systems provider and
master systems integrator, by setting
up a data center simulation and assembly lab. The scaled down environment
will contain fully functional ICT systems
and network configurations, and will be
used as the platform for systems testing and systems integration. The FMG
team also provides analytical support
for CCTV systems, devices, and their
efficiency.
The team liaises between ICAD, the
main construction contractor and provides ORAT support to GACA.

Vital Post-Opening Support
The work of FMG‘s consulting experts is usually not over after a new airport or terminal has been opened. The following
weeks and months are vital for the project‘s success.
Stefan Fornasier (l.) giving advice at Hamad International Airport in Doha
When finally after a long ORAT planning
and implementation period the new
airport or terminal starts operation,
there is usually not much time for celebration, as now the successful handling
of live aircrafts, passengers and baggage has to prove what was prepared in
many months before.
Based on the team’s operational
knowledge gained in the preparation
phase, ORAT is able to offer valuable
support to all stakeholders during these highly busy post-opening weeks. As
the team is not directly responsible for
daily operations, it can continue to observe, analyse and validate operations,
followed by reports and recommendations to the management.
This post-opening phase has
two parts: The first three to six days
immediately after the opening, and
the following next six to eight weeks,
where the actual time needed depends
on the achievement of pre-defined key
performance indicators. For the first
operational days of Hamad International Airport in Doha, a Command and
Control Center was set up to monitor
operations of all areas and stakehol-
ders, and to enable management to
quickly take actions to mitigate any
failures or shortcomings.
Equipped with comprehensive
understanding of procedures and the
in-depth knowledge of the new systems
and infrastructure, Stefan Fornasier,
Project Manager FMG ORAT, and his team
took a permanent seat in this Center enabling them to readily assess and make
decisions on matters reported onto
them by the good number of observers
on the ground, thus it was ensured that
contingency measures were in place and
in standby, should anything go wrong.
In the second post-opening phase
after the first few days of operating a
new airport, the main objective changes
from »fire-fighting« all the small and
larger problems of daily operations to
improving and stabilizing on-time-performance and service levels. ORAT members will remain acting as observers,
recording and reporting the issues, verifying if procedures are followed by the
staff and communication channels are
used as intended. Especially procedures
involving the control authorities can be
subject to changes in the first few weeks
and need special attention.

Current Projects in Brief
Qatar: Airport Opening & ongoing PostOpening Support / Decommissioning
FMG is providing ongoing support to the
client with experts from Munich after the
on-time transition from the old airport
and the successful opening of the new
airport, Hamad International, on 27th
May (»Perfect Timing in the Desert«,
newsletter Q2/2014). During an eight
week post-opening period the FMG team
was on stand-by with a comprehensive
understanding of procedures and interfaces as well as an in-depth knowledge
of the new systems and infrastructure.
At the same time the decommissioning
work stream is looking into safeguarding
the assets at the old airport and preparing the re-use of facilities for other purposes. The preparation of facilities and
extensions of the new airport that aren‘t
operational yet is ongoing. FMG is organizing ORAT trials e.g. in the North-Node
with eight additional contact stands to
ensure their expected opening in the 4th
quarter of 2014.

Top Punctuality in Europe
93.3 percent of all outbound flights in Munich got airborne
at latest 15 minutes after the expected time of departure.
Munich ranks first in the punctuality
statistics of European hubs, according to results released by the Association of European Airlines (AEA).
According to AEA, the punctuality of
the Lufthansa hubs Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and Zurich improved by
at least ten percent points in comparison to last year‘s period. Munich Airport tops in the ranking: 93.3 percent
of all outbound flights got airborne at
latest 15 minutes after the expected time of departure. In March 2014
the punctuality increased to 94.5
percent, thus reaching an absolute
peak. Especially positive are these
results in light of the current apron
works for Munich Airport´s satellite
terminal, which is one of the biggest
construction sites in Europe.
International Trainings Highly Requested
Munich Airport‘s international trainings are taking shape. Various courses have been conducted
at the airport during the last few months. The very positive feedback shows: International
training meets customers‘ needs and demands.
For more than 20 years Munich Airport
Academy (MAA) has gained a lot of
experience and has provided training
services to Munich Airport staff and
external clients.
Recently, also the International Training
is forming shape. Since September 2013
more than ten tailor-made International
Training Courses have been conducted
at Munich Airport by its »hands-on«
experts. The feedback from the participants shows that clients value MAA‘s
experience. MAA is on its way on establishing International Training as a
successful customer-oriented product.
Currently the portfolio comprises courses in the following fields:
∫∫ Airside Operations
∫∫ Terminal Operations and Management
∫∫ Facility Management
∫∫ Airport Safety and Safety Management
Systems
∫∫ Airport Systems and Civil Engineering
∫∫ Security
∫∫ Baggage Handling
∫∫ Airport Financial Management
∫∫ Airport Duty Managers
»But principally we can tailor almost
every training our clients are asking for,«
says Ulrich Theis who is responsible for
International Training at the Academy.
»We are able to accompany the whole
»training value chain« for an airport
client, starting from training needs
assessments to the development of the
required trainings to training coordination and facilitation of the required
trainings,« he adds.
Further trainings are already planned
for the next few months. For more information on the Munich Airport Academy

Unique Airport Opera Wows the Audience
The world‘s only airport opera, created by Munich Airport, enchanted the audiences in
Munich and Soweto, South Africa. Airport employees and crew members of various airlines
have created a truly global music experience.
Around 400 guests applauded enthusiastically after the performance in Soweto Theatre near Johannesburg in July. It
was the second staging of a unique opera project - created
at Munich Airport and performed by 19 talented amateurs
working in the aviation industry.
»There is pure energy that connects to a great experience,«
says Björn Potulski, director of the opera called »This New
Ocean« talking about the performers‘ passion in singing,
dancing and acting. Back in 2012 he had the idea of tapping
employees he knew who have hidden artistic talents.
With the support of FMG‘s General Manager Dr. Michael
Kerkloh, who is very much a music aficionado himself, Bjorn
Potulski created the world‘s first airport opera »Heavier than
Air«, starring a group of ground handling staff.
During the second project, Munich Airport proved that
its expertise in logistics and international cooperation goes
beyond onto a cultural level. »This New Ocean« features 19
vocal performers of various nationalities whose daily job it
is to connect continents and nations. They are crew members of Lufthansa, South African Airways, Japanese ANA
and employees of Munich Airport, who in between flights and
busy working schedules, devoted time and effort to rehearse.
After each rehearsal, the opera company spread all over the
world again.
The whole project was led by Potulski, who himself is working full-time with FMG‘s department for Political Affairs. The
chosen performers composed and ensembled under the musical supervision of Dr. Nélida Béjar, who at the same time was
responsible for the musical arrangements.
The successful performances in Munich and Soweto,
which might be followed by a third event in Japan, proved that
it was well worth the effort.
Ground Handling Goes International
FMG‘s AeroGround is ready for expansion and consulting activites all over the the world.
AeroGround Flughafen München GmbH, a 100%-subsidiary
and FMG’s sole platform in providing ground handling services,
is striving to expand its business beyond Munich Airport.
The organizational groundwork was laid by implementing a dedicated department parallel to FMG’s International Business
Division in 2013. This entity represents and takes responsibility
for all expansion and consulting activities of AeroGround and its
affiliates: aerogate and Cargogate. The main focus lies on the
acquisition of ground handling licenses followed by the start-up
of new stations.
Additionally, AeroGround offers its ground handling expertise within all FMG consulting projects and provides operational
support to partners and clients alike.
A closer view on previous and ongoing international activities
will be provided in the next issue of this newsletter. For further

Upon landing at Munich Airport you can
have your own Oktoberfest at the Airbräu, the world’s only airport brewery,
and enjoy Bavarian cuisine and home-brewed beer. Starting with two dif-
ferent types of beer, Airbräu nowadays
crafts three standard and fi ve seasonal beers. Several events, including the
performance of typical Bavarian music
artists, make you feel like being right in
the middle of the Oktoberfest.
About 1,800 guests visit the Airbräu
per day, and approximately 4,000 pairs
of sausages and 20,000 liters of beer
are sold every month. Due to Airbräu’s
15th anniversary there are some specials and surprises waiting for you and
your guests this month: a birthday cake,
an especially brewed birthday beer and
corresponding musical entertainment!
