Munich Planning Alliance Satellite Airports Munich Airport International, Midfield Terminal Planning and construction 2008–2015 By the end of 2011, Munich Airports’ multiple-awarded Terminal 2 reached the limits of its total capacity of around 25 million passengers per year. K+P had been awarded the contract to design a new transfer building for Terminal 2, called the ‘Satellite’, which is planned to be completed in 2015. Koch+Partner felt obliged to maintain this high standard and successfully developed the overall concept further with its design for Terminal 2, which received several design awards. »Optimize + Realize« Munich Airport International, Extension Baggage Sorting Hall Conversion and Extension 2009-2013 The existing baggage sorting hall, erected to the east of Terminal 2 in 2003, has now been extended at the north end, to ensure the urgently needed expansion space for the baggage handling system. It was constructed under operation of the existing sorting hall. The pre-existing building with its expansion is the ground level to Germany’s first midfield terminal, called ‘Satellite’. Conversion and Extension In its first stage, the new Satellite will be able to handle another 11 million passengers per year and is built ‘on top of ’ the already existing baggage sorting hall. In a second stage, the Satellite building can be extended into a T-shaped building. The parameter of reducing the CO2 -emission by 40 per cent has been implemented in the design from the very beginning.
