InalargeprojectsuchasMunichAirport’snewTerminal2,service,
adviceandlogisticsarejustasimportantastheperformanceand
qualityofthelightingtoolsthemselves.
Capacitybottlenecks,intheairportthatwasonlyopenedin1992,
wererelegatedtothepast-forthetimebeingatleast-whenthe
newTerminal2becameoperationalinJune2003.Theconsortium
projectofFlughafenMünchenGmbHandDeutscheLufthansaAG,
whichdoublesthepassengercapacitywithonefellswoop,is
locatedtotheeastoftheexistingpassengerareaandisdirectly
connectedtothe"MunichAirportCenter"(MAC).Incontrasttothe
existingTerminal1,thenewterminaldoesnotfeatureamodular
constructionbutinsteadconsistsofacentralhallandapierof
aboutakilometrewith114gates.
Commissioningsuchagiganticcomplexrequiredgeneral-staff
planning.ThisincludedextensivetestrunswhereLufthansa
employeeshadagoatbeingpassengers.Ononesuchoccasion,our
photographerFriederBlickletookthephotosshownonthispage.
Whilethefinishingtoucheswerestillbeingmadetothecheck-in
desks,thegroundstaffwerealreadytestingemergencyscenarios.
Withsuccess:theregularoperationsstartedwithoutahitch.Forthe
firsttimeever,airlineandairportoperatorsdesignandbuilda
terminaltogether:theLufthansaanditspartnerairlinesnowprofit
fromtheoptimalconditionscreatedbythenewbuilding.
CeilinginstallationinTerminal2:ERCOsuppliedover14,000
LightcastDownlightstositeonajust-in-timebasis.Inthecourseof
theprojectthefollowingrecognitioncrystallisedamongstthose
involved:theeconomicefficiencyofalightingtoolisdetermined
notonlybythepricebutalsobyfactorssuchaseasyinstallation
andthequalityoftheserviceandthelogistics.Especiallywhere
projectsonthescaleandcomplexityofTerminal2areconcerned,it
isthedirectcommunicationandoptimisedinformationflow
betweenthebuildingsponsors,architects,technicaldesignersand
suppliersthatarebecomingthecrucialfactors.
The"MediaRail"runsabovethecheck-indesks;thisisastructure
thatintegratesthelighting,cablingandmediatechnology.ERCOT16luminairesforfluorescentlampsaremountedinthe"Media
Rail".TheirDarklightreflectorshaveparaboliccrossbafflesfor
optimalvisualcomfort.Theareabehindtherowofdesksreceives
indirectlightfromParscoopceilingwashlightsfor70WHIT-CRI
metalhalidelamps.

orientationluminaires(photoonright).Goodlightingalsoprovides
apleasantatmosphereintheotherareastoo:theblown-up
decorativephotoswithaviationmotifsalmostseemtobeself
