Retail buyers travelled to F4W 2014 from stores across the UK last
month to see a wide variety of fresh new wallcoverings collections,
including some very different designs on show, helping to make it
another busy and highly enjoyable event, as testified by the appreciative
comments reported, right, from some of the many visitors, writes
Christina Gregory, editor, F4W Newsletter.
There was a wonderful atmosphere too at the post-show dinner at
the Hilton, where customers enjoyed the traditional warm hospitality of
the suppliers, with excellent entertainment by singer Stephen Bayliss and
the inimitable Carl Wheeler of Fine Decor, who took the mic again to
great applause. On behalf of all nine suppliers who exhibited at the show,
David Smith from Colemans gave customers a big vote of thanks for
their support, endorsed below by Mark Metcalfe of Rasch UK.
Writes Mark: I think this is the eighth Fashion4Walls trade show, and
each year we, the suppliers, hope it will be a great success, both for the
exhibitors who show their latest ranges and the retailers who take the
time to visit. When you take into consideration the quiet summer this
year, as well as other trade shows taking place in the same week, you
can probably understand why we may have felt a little apprehensive as
to the outcome of our show.
However, as in previous years you, the customer came out to support
us, and once again made it a success, and for that we give you our
sincere thanks. Since the middle of August we have noticed a positive
movement in the market, which has continued to increase in September
as retailers look to freshen up their offer and footfall increases.
Let’s hope this continues throughout the remainder of the year and
into the spring. Once again, many thanks for your support.
We were so energized by our visit that we made some huge
changes to our range when we got back to make way for the much
fresher looking new designs we saw. We felt this time that there was
a lot more on offer. We particularly liked the new designs on the
theme of nature, probably best summed up as birds and trees.”
l The date and venue for the 2015 Fashion4Walls show will be
announced shortly – see our website for the latest news: www.f4w.co.uk

I enjoyed the show and found plenty of new designs to buy: it
was good to see suppliers doing something different, stepping away
from florals. I liked the new modern damasks from Muriva, and Fine
Decor’s new Woodland designs, and I think there’s a lot of good
product coming through from Debona.”
Debbie Evans, County Wallpapers, Sedgley
A lovely show, and a great location, very easy to get to by train.
We were looking mainly for heavyweight vinyls with our traditional
customers very much in mind, and as well as ordering from our main
supplier, Belgravia, we found some nice new Italian vinyls from
Colemans and new damasks with a more modern look from Muriva.”
Mark Welch, Decoron, West Bromwich
I found the show worthwhile and enjoyable, and got what I was
looking for. For me the strongest offers were from Fine Decor and
Holden Decor. I believe as an independent wallpaper retailer that it’s
important to support Fashion4Walls - a few years ago the industry
was crying out for a trade show, and I think everyone benefits from
supporting it and being there together.”
We were very impressed with this year’s show – there were a lot
of different designs to see, and we found our visit very enjoyable and
useful. The Hilton hotel is excellent, and the location is spot-on for us.
We are placing orders for a mix of designs with companies such as
A S Creation, Belgravia, Colemans and Holden Decor.”
Ian Metcalfe, Metcalfe’s, South Shields
We thought the show was very good and the hotel excellent. The
best ranges for us were the new Tiffany and Florence from Belgravia,
Italian vinyls from Colemans, Woodland designs from Fine Decor, and
Allure blown vinyls from Rasch.”
Nigel Fielding, Porters, Accrington
Fashion4Walls was very good – I’ve been to every one of the
shows, and have no criticisms at all. I think the timing is right, and the
Hilton Manchester is a great venue. I ordered some new products to
freshen up our ranges - I especially liked the Fine Decor offer.”

This is the first time we’ve been to the show. We liked the venue,
and very much enjoyed our visit. We were looking for something
different, and liked the new ranges by Fine Decor and Galerie.”

Top sellers at F4W 2014
We asked the nine suppliers exhibiting at
Fashion4Walls last month to name three
top-selling designs/collections from their show
ranges. Two from each company are pictured
here, and their other show winners are illustrated
on the back cover.
These designs highlight the big trend this
season for nature-inspired wallcoverings
featuring birds, trees and butterflies, while
natural effects such as wood and slate continue
to be popular. Still in demand are quirky feature
wall designs, with a move to very bright colours.
Fine DEcor
The nature-inspired Woodland range of
three designs was a best seller at F4W,
led by Woodland Owl, far left, in teal.
Left: Woodland Trees in gold, the most
popular of the four colourways.
In contrast, beautiful Italian vinyls are flying
high among the top sellers, with some fantastic
new luxury and opulent statement designs
launched for autumn. We are also seeing more
smart-looking mid- and smaller-scale geometric
patterns for use on all four walls.

F4W supplier
Continuing our series of interviews with F4W
suppliers, Carl Wheeler, sales director of Fine
Decor Wallcoverings, answers questions about
the Holmes Chapel based company
Carl Wheeler, sales
director, Fine Decor
Wallcoverings.
Q: When was Fine Decor established?
A: Fine Decor has a long history dating back
to 1910 when the mill at Holmes Chapel,
Cheshire, first started manufacturing
wallcoverings. The present company was
established in 2000 as the manufacturing arm
of Brewster Home Fashions, a fourth generation
wallcovering business with offices in North
America and China.
On-trend Bird Box has
a birch tree background.
Luxury looks: new Serafina
in-register vinyl.
Q: How would you describe the recent
development of the company?
A: Fantastic! We’ve worked hard to achieve
excellent growth and business has more than
doubled during the past 14 years. Our factory
produces all types of wallcovering including
wallpapers, vinyl, textured vinyl, expanded vinyl
and nonwoven, along with a wide range of
special techniques such as glitters, suedes,
gels and raised inks: we are always researching
new techniques.
Fine Decor’s latest collections launched at
Fashion4Walls include: Woodland Owls,
pictured above left; Matrix, above; and
Paris, below left.
wallcoverings retailing from around £7.99 to
£29.99, and 12 new room-lot collections.
Q: What company achievements are you
most proud of?
A: We’ve had good growth for the past four
years, so it does get more challenging to
maintain this high standard each year, but that’s
a challenge we like! Our product offer gets
fantastic support from all markets and we will
continue to offer excellent design, colour, quality
and value to all our customers.
Q: Which sectors of the market does Fine
Decor mainly cater for?
A: We supply stock and room-lot wallcoverings
to all sectors of the UK market with strong
focus on independent retailers, national
accounts and trade decorating centres. Since
February we have been developing our room-lot
wallcoverings business via the independent and
trade decorating centre markets.
Q: What are your most popular ranges?
A: So many are selling well that it’s difficult to
name just a few, but our feature wall designs
including Wall Words, Live Love Laugh, Torino
and Tuscany are doing particularly well. We
presented a total of 48 new patterns at the F4W
show in September and we’ve had a great
reaction to these ranges, in particular Woodland
(wallpapers), Winchester (glitters), Burlington
and Matrix (textured vinyls). We also have
excellent sales for our Italian heavyweight vinyl
range Milano, now with new glitter textures.
Q: Where are the majority of your products
made and designed?
F 4 W. c o . u k
A: The majority of our wallcoverings are
designed and manufactured at our factory in
Holmes Chapel. We have six designers working
in our design studio supported by design
director Marc Roylance.
Q: What do you look for when introducing
new collections, and how many collections
are you offering currently?
A: Our designers look at a wide variety of
fashion and market trends through various
channels, and always listen to the retailers’
comments fed back via our sales team or from
visiting stores themselves. Currently in the
market we have more than 30 stock ranges of
|6|
Q: Finally, how do you see the UK
wallcoverings scene today?
A: Wallpaper is definitely on-trend: consumers
want to be proud of their homes, and wallpaper
is a big feature impact factor these days around
the house. We hope to see this help wallpaper
get back to the four walls very soon. With house
sales also increasing and more new houses
being built, they will all need decorating, so the
signs are good. I’ve worked in wallcoverings for
25 years, and I am confident about the future of
the wallcoverings industry and the continued
success of Fine Decor.
