Vincent McWhirter, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Development Worker Tel: 01292 319357 Email: [email protected] What is Active Schools? Active Schools aims to provide more and higher quality opportunities for children to participate in school sport and to increase capacity through the recruitment of volunteers who deliver the activity sessions. Who do Active Schools work with? The Active Schools Network works together with organisations and individuals; including volunteers, students, young leaders, Competitive School Sport Officer, PE staff and Sports Development officers, local sports clubs and Community Sport Hubs to provide a wide range of opportunities connected to physical education, school sport and club sport. Active Schools work to ensure that young people are given a voice within schools to develop the opportunities which they want to take part in. What has Active Schools in South Ayrshire achieved? In 2014/15 Active Schools delivered over 6,000 sessions in 38 different sports and activities, with 88% of these being delivered by our network of over 500 volunteers including senior pupils, students, teachers, parents and club coaches. Active Schools also assists with the transition from school sport into club and community sport by working closely with local sports clubs, Competitive School Sport Officer, Community Sports Hubs and National Governing Bodies of sport to highlight the opportunities that exist in the local community and encourage children and young people to get involved. This integrated way of working creates and develops pathways into sport which, in turn, encourages longer term participation. Get Involved in Active Schools. Together we will make it happen. Ayrshire Sportsability was created to promote the education and welfare of people with physical, sensory or learning disabilities through sport. The Charity was set up in 2001 when it was discovered that children and young people with disabilities did not have the same opportunities as others to take part in physical activity and sport. Over 200 primary and secondary pupils took part in the first ‘Come and Try’ day. The popularity of our event has continued to grow every year with the 2016 event expecting to attract over 600 pupils. In 2014 we began working with adults with disabilities. In addition to our main event our programme for 2016 includes: • Continuation of our Grants Award programme to give financial support to talented individuals or Clubs, competing in Local or National Competitions. • The first ‘Ability Games’ which will be a completive event in athletics, football, boccia and swimming. The Charity’s aims are: • To promote, co-ordinate and develop the participation of people with a disability in Ayrshire and Arran in sports and physical activities. • To develop sustainable sporting pathways towards excellence. • To raise the profile of sport for people with a disability in Ayrshire and Arran. • To organise sporting events, festivals and competitions to advance our aims. Members of the Charity include representatives from Ayrshire College, East Ayrshire Council, NHS Ayrshire and Arran, North Ayrshire Council, KA Leisure, Scottish Disability Sport, South Ayrshire Council and Sportscotland If you are interested in disability sport and would like to find out more about becoming a member please contact us. You can help to promote and support the Ayrshire Sportsability annual event and help us achieve our plans for the future by: • Providing sponsorship; • Fund raising events – individuals can plan their own fundraising projects. Let us know and we support your efforts; • Volunteering to help at our events and /or future club events; • Letting us know of any people with a disability who would like to be involved in our events; • Attending our Annual Charity Ball.
