2014 was a very good year for your club. Membership continued to
increase steadily with the addition of many excited new members. The Boykin
Spaniel expanded its presence in the AKC with several new titles ranging from
Hunter and Retriever titles to conformation to agility to fly ball. Most of these
new titles have been achieved by you, members of the BSCBAA.
Your Club had many accomplishments in 2014. The Club held its 3rd annual hunt
test event in March at Leesville, SC. Several Working Dog Certification Programs
were held from Maryland to South Carolina to Texas with many Boykins successfully achieving club titles. Your club’s second supported entry conformation
event was held in conjunction with the Caddo Kennel Club All Breed dog show
on May 3, 2014 in Marshall, Texas. The supported entry again had one of the
largest gatherings ever of Boykins at an AKC show. The supported entry event
also featured a Judge’s Education Seminar, trophies for various winners, a raffle,
auction and BBQ dinner.

BSCBAA President’s Letter Continued
Other Judges Educations seminars
were held last year including most
recently Seattle, Washington. We
conducted several Meet The Breed
events at shows in Chicago, New York,
Houston and Connecticut. The Standard Committee is in the process of reviewing the Breed Standard and has
requested changes and concerns from
members. The Constitution & By-Laws
Committee is nearing the conclusion
of its work on updating the Constitution & By-Laws. The Communication
Committee is in the process of creating a private Facebook Page for Club
members to share pictures and stories.
We congratulate and say thank you to
all members and owners who participated in events, served on committees and who volunteered their
time to this club in many different capacities in 2014. Thank you!
The BSCBAA has several events
planned for 2015 that will be fun and
exciting for you and your Boykin. The
first one of several AKC Meet the
Breeds: The Westminster Kennel Club
will present AKC Meet the Breeds on
February 14, 2015 from 10:00 am –
5:00 pm. This event will be held at
Pier 92, 711 12th Ave, New York, NY
10019 in conjunction with The Westminster Kennel Club’s Master Agility
Trial. The BSCBAA will exhibit Boykin
Spaniels that will be exhibited by
Butch Norckauer, Jackie DeAngelo,
Regina Hairie and other BSCBAA club
members.
Our 4th annual AKC Licensed Spaniel
Hunt Tests will be held February 28/
March 1 at H. Cooper – Black Wood
Duck Pond, Cheraw, SC. I hope you
are not as far behind on training as I
am.

Meet The Breeds - Hartford, Connecticut Oct 26, 2014
The Connecticut Federation of (AKC) Dog Clubs put on an independent Meet the Breeds at the Hartford, Ct.
Convention Center October 25 and 26. Herding, Hound, Working and Toys were on Saturday, October
25. Terriers, Non-Sporting and Sporting was on Sunday, October 26. This event has been taking place for over
20 years with attendance of over 10,000 between the two days.
The MTB is there to familiarize the public about our AKC breeds, the AKC and to promote buying a pure bred
dog from a reputable breeder, and responsible dog ownership.
This year Boykin Spaniels were represented for the first time at this event by Jacqueline De Angelo and Regina Hairie, both BSCBAA members (AKC Parent Club for Boykin Spaniels) from the state of New York, and of
course with Top Gun Boykins - GCH Top Gun Lone Wolf (Luke) and GCH Top Gun Keeping Faith, SH (Faith).
The day was not as intense as the MTB in NYC but a bit more relaxing and definitely worth participating. The
public enjoyed the hands on meeting of the Boykin Spaniels. Many dog fanciers had knowledge of the breed
but had never put their hands on a Boykin including other exhibitors. Our ring time to show the sporting
group was in the afternoon. Faith and Luke strutted their stuff around the ring and got a round of applause.
It is important for us to continue to educate the public in support of this dynamic breed. The passion for
purebred dogs must continue as we fight legislation. Please see pictures of the event below.

STATUS OF COMPLAINT AND
COUNTERCLAIMS
The BSCBAA and twenty-one (21)
present and former board members, committee persons and/or
officers were sued by former members of the Club on May 23, 2013 in
Lexington County, South Carolina.
Your Club and each defendant
moved quickly to defend against
the allegations, which are considered baseless. The Club and most
defendants moved to dismiss the
complaint. Nearly all individual defendants were subsequently dismissed without the need for court
involvement. The Club and one other defendant remain in the suit.
Your Club continues to vigorously
defend against the plaintiffs’ claims
and prosecute its counterclaims
against the plaintiff. An unsolicited
settlement offer from the plaintiffs
was received by your club, October

Leave 1/3 of the tail plus 1/4 inch;
please use a ruler.
Dock between 3 & 7 days of age –
3 days is preferred.
There is consistently a natural indentation where the tail should be
docked. If the measurement falls
between joints, look or feel for the
one where there is a natural indentation. REMEMBERING -- Longer is

November and December 2014 were
busy months with Rose competing in
3 different venues. She received a
Working Dog Certificate from the
BSCBAA for recognition of her hunting
ability. She received a title for Beginner Novice Obedience from the AKC.
Rose and Michle were ranked number
one in the National Owner Handler
Series in the AKC for 2014 for the
second consecutive year. They won
Best of Breed at the NOHS Championship at the Eukanuba National Dog
defending last year's win. Rose also
received Merit of Excellence in conformation at Eukanuba Nationals
2014. This is prime example of how
versatile the Boykin Spaniel is. She is
now receiving a well deserved break
from showing in conformation and
now training for advanced obedience

of Houston, TX, has had an exciting couple of months. On December 12-14, 2014, Maggie competed in the AKC Agility Invitational, which is an event reserved for
the top 5 dogs in each breed.
Maggie won best Boykin Spaniel
by completing two of four rounds
with perfect scores. Maggie also
won the Top Dog award for 2014,
for finishing the calendar year as
the #1-ranked Preferred Class
Boykin spaniel for agility. Dogs
earn points for both the invitational and the top dog awards by
successfully completing agility
courses under the standard course
time, and by qualifying in both
Standard Agility and Jumpers With
Weaves on the same day (doublequalifying score). Maggie has also
had a great start to 2015. In the
first three weekends of the year,
Maggie has had two perfect weekends with several first and second
-place finishes in a very competitive 12-inch preferred agility class.
Maggie now has 11 doublequalifying scores, which is over
halfway to her Preferred Agility
Championship (PACH), which requires 20 double-qualifying
scores. Maggie looks forward to
many more exciting agility trials
this year! Maggie primarily shows
in Southeast Texas and Southwest

The BSCBAA Board of Directors established the 2015 Nominating
Committee for the nomination of candidates for the five Board of
Director vacancies created by outgoing BSCBAA Board Members:
Greg Copeland; Gregg Parker; Roslin Copeland; Randall Benzel and
Michle Machala. Thank you outgoing board members - we appreciate
your service to the club.
The Nominees are for the class of 2018, which means they will serve a
3-year term beginning this year and ending in 2018. Election of Board
members will be conducted in accordance with the BSCBAA Bylaws at
its annual meeting in May 2015.
In accordance with the Bylaws, additional nominations of the eligible
members may be made by written petition addressed to the BSCBAA
Secretary, Roslin Copeland and received at PO Box 781, Cypress, TX
77410 on or before 15 days after this publication of the Boykin Spaniel
Standard. Additional nominations must include a written acceptance
from the nominee asserting their willingness to serve, and should
include a maximum of one-half of a standard page, 12 point font, selfwritten resume of background/qualifications to be included with the
ballots.
If no valid additional nominees are received by the secretary on or
before 15 days after this publication of the Boykin Spaniel Standard,
the nominating committee's slate shall be declared elected at the time
of the annual meeting and no further balloting will be required. If one
or more additional nominees are received by the secretary on or before February 15th, the secretary will in accordance with the bylaws
mail ballots for voting, return mailing, opening and counting at the
annual meeting. The mailed ballots will include a copy of each candidate's half page resume.
The 2015 Nominating Committee is Greg Copeland, Chair, Board
Member, Chairman named by the BOD; Dan Kauzlarich, Member,
DeVon Ruth, Member, with alternates: James Machala, Member,
Jackie DeAngelo, Board Member.
The 2015 Nominating Committee is pleased to present the following
2018 Class slate of nominees for the five Board vacancies created by
outgoing BSCBAA Board Members: Gregg Parker, GA. Gregg is in the
outgoing class of 2015 but is eligible for election to the class of 2018
because he joined the board after the last annual meeting, Dan Kauzlarich, IL, James Machala, TX, Leslie Kern, SC and Melody Bacon, TX.
GREGG PARKER, GA
Gregg lives in Savannah, Georgia and is currently a Safety Director at
Ceres Marine Terminals in Savannah. He is a retired Colonel of the
United States Air Force. Gregg in his spare time spends much of it
serving on retriever clubs, hunting, hunt testing or training his dogs
with his wife Misty.
Gregg has had Boykins for the past six years along with English Springer Spaniels, American Water Spaniels and many Labs for over forty
years. He presently has four Boykins, one English Springer Spaniel and
one American Water Spaniel living with him. He is very proud of his
Boykins and their designations: GCH HR UH Swamp Fox JHR, SH (Sly)
Shown at Westminster KC and Eukanuba, HR Sweet Georgia Brown
MHR (Sweet), SHR Broad River Vixen, JH, JHR (Kit), SHR Broad River
Buster Brown (Tige), HRCH UH Savannah Belle, SH. Gregg is an AKC’s
Boykin Spaniel Club member as well as the Chair of the Hunt & Field
Committee, presently president of Coastal Empire HRC and a past
president of the Alaska Retriever Club.
Gregg is currently on the BSCBAA board serving out Harold Stanlick’s position who had to leave due to personal & family illness. As the club’s Hunt &
Field Chair and member of many hunt test committees and trials, he has
helped organize and participated in numerous events.
Gregg believes that we as the AKC Parent Club for Boykin Spaniels should
maintain a strict standard for the breed and encourage Boykin owners to
hunt and show their dogs. His desire is to keep the hunt dog and the show
dog as one and not have the two split. Gregg’s other concern is to have the
club maintain diligence about insisting that Boykin breeders keep with our
Code of Ethics and to insist the breeders maintain appropriate health clearances. As a board member, Gregg will work hard on the issues mentioned
above and continue his work as a leader in the Hunt & Field Committee.
DAN KAUZLARICH, IL
Dan lives in Farmington Illinois and is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and Illinois State University. He retired from Caterpillar Inc. after
35 years working in Information technology. He is also a retired active/
reserve officer of the US army having served 25 years. Dan spends much of
his time showing , hunt testing , or training his dogs with his wife Sharon
and adult daughter Katie. Dan has had Boykins for over thirty years and
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers for twenty five years and shows and
hunt his dogs around the country. He presently has three Boykins living
with him Strauss, Easy, and the new puppy Godiva. There are several Tollers who also share the house with the Boykins.
He and his family are members as well as heavily involved in the activities
of the AKC’s Boykin Spaniel club and NSDTR club. Dan is a past Board member and president of the BSCBAA and present member of several club
committees. As a member of the NSDTR club he has helped organize several hunt test, regional supported entries, and three national speciality
events. Dan is also an AKC hunt test judge for the spaniel upland tests.
He and his family actively show their dogs in AKC conformation events, rally
and obedience matches, and hunt test (upland and retriever). Their
Boykin Strauss is the only AKC Boykin to have a Grand champion and Master Hunting Advance Title. It is his desire to have all of the BeeKauz Kennel
dogs to have multiple titles in two or more venues to showcase the verticality of the breeds.
As a returning board member he would like to expand the regional diversity of the club and reach out to members of the BSS to encourage them to
join our club as well as their club. Additional ensure the Club finishes the
task of becoming full licensed to hold a national specialty event. These
items are critical to the long term success of the Club.
JAMES MACHALA, TX
James Machala is from Baytown, Texas, married to Michle Machala. He
graduated from Texas A&M University with a Business degree in Finance.
His work career was mainly with Exxon Mobil as an operations supervisor
for over 25 years, prior to that he worked for the Texas Comptroller as a
tax auditor for five years.
Since retiring in 2003, James has spent most of his time hunting, fishing,
gardening and managing their four acres and two homes. Some of his favorite things to do are grilling or BBQ'ing, which happens 3-5 times a week
on his four pits. James and Michle are both very active in their church and
attend Daily Mass. The rest of their time is spent practicing retirement and
working and playing with their Boykins.
James and his wife, Michle, currently have four Boykins, ranging in age
from 15 months to 10 years old. His first introduction to a Boykin Spaniel,
named Camo, was eight years ago while deer hunting in Cotulla, Texas. This
Boykin Spaniel impressed him so much that he caught the “Boykin Bug”.

deer as well as being a very social, lovable dog. James and Michle
decided they needed a Boykin in their life and they acquired their first
one, Deva, in 2011 and quickly expanded from there. They have added
three more Boykins for a total of four and they haven’t stopped yet.
Rose is their three year old Boykin, who just happens to be the highest
pointed female Boykin Spaniel ever in AKC conformation, as well as
being James’ dove hunting dog which she also excels at. She has
earned a WD twice and James is hoping to put a Junior Hunt Title on
her in 2015, before breeding her first litter in 2016.
James and Michle are both members of the BSCBAA and are heavily
involved in the club. Currently, James is the Coordinator of the Breeder Directory Program and has volunteered on several committees as
well as a member of the Communication Committee. James as the
BDP coordinator speaks or corresponds with people looking for
Boykins almost on a daily basis. He directs them to the Club’s Preferred Breeders and emphasizes that testing is critical for a healthy
pup and they can buy from them with confidence. He is also responsible for checking the AKC website for breeders that are not going by
our Code of Ethics, which is required by the AKC.
James’s goal for the AKC’s Boykin Spaniel Parent Club is to work to
improve the breed through encouraging breeders and owners to
maintain health testing and to follow the Club’s Code of Ethics. He
also is dedicated to helping our club grow while enjoying the company
of the best dogs in the world as well as all the fine people in this club.
LESLIE KERN, SC
Leslie and her husband, Beau live in Beaufort, SC. They have six
Boykins, two Brittany Spaniels, and an English Setter. Leslie’s passion
for this breed started 10 years ago when she was asked to socialize a
small pup for several weeks, whose owner was sent overseas. Within
a very short period of time, it was evident to both Beau and Leslie that
this ‘little brown dog’ was something very special and shortly thereafter found her forever home. That puppy, Bella, is now 10 years old.
From the onset, Leslie has been a dedicated advocate in the breed.
Participating in not only AKC events, but also BSS and UKC events, she
believes giving her dogs every opportunity to demonstrate their natural abilities and sharing their remarkable versatility and qualities are
paramount. Leslie has had much success in conformation and the
field. Her “Jake” received the Westminster Kennel Club Award of
Merit two years in a row and has earned Junior Hunter and Junior
Hunting Retriever titles along with a UKC Hunting Retriever title.
“Jesse”, Jake’s littermate, was Eukanuba Best of Breed winner and
Best Bred By Exhibitor in Boykins the first year the breed was welcomed into the ring out in Long Beach, California. Both Jesse and Jake
are Grand Champions. Jesse then went on to earn Junior Hunter and
UKC Started Hunting Retriever. From Bella’s second litter, “Sula”,
quickly completed her Grand Champion title and has excelled in field
work. She is presently working on her Master Hunting Retriever and
has her UKC Hunting Retriever title. These three Bella pups have also
received many Conformation Group Placements.
Leslie, grew up in Oyster Bay, New York, moved to South Carolina in
1989. Her husband, Beau, was recruited to help rebuild after Hurricane Hugo. After settling in Mount Pleasant and raising their family
there for 24 years, Leslie’s passion and desire to do as much as she
could for the Boykin Spaniel quickly outgrew their home. A few years
ago, Leslie, Beau and the ‘gang’ moved to family property in Beaufort,
South Carolina. “It’s the perfect setting”, says Leslie to have a small
personal kennel and plenty of room for training in both land and water work.
Having studied Elementary Education and Music, Leslie is very active with
Church, has been a choir and hand bells member for over 30 years. She is a
Board Member for The Beaufort Kennel Club and The Coastal Empire
Hunting Retriever Club. She enjoys spending time with family and friends
both in the field and out, boating, travelling, cooking, gardening and fishing.
Leslie’s contribution to the BSCBAA Board of Directors is focused on the
‘whole’ Boykin Spaniel. The furtherance of the breed and utmost important, the health concerns of the breed going forward. As a breeder,
Leslie enjoys the challenge of researching and travelling to observe potential breeding companions. She feels the placement of each puppy into the
best possible home to ensure a happy, healthy life providing every opportunity for each Boykin to be the best it can be.
MELODY BACON, TX
Melody lives in Houston, Texas having moved from Northern California 11
years ago while working for Hewlett Packard as a Project Manager. Melody
retired after 30 years with HP. She recently went back to college and studied veterinary medicine, graduating as a veterinary assistant.
Melody’s first performance dog was a Golden Retriever and she eventually
wound up with four. She trained each and has participated in conformation, obedience, hunt tests and tracking, and eventually bred. Each of
her Goldens were also certified in Pet Therapy. She has served on the BOD
for the local Golden Retriever club as well as chaired the Golden Retriever
Specialty at the Reliant Center for two years.
Melody started looking over a year ago for a smaller dog in the Sporting
Group that could be easily trained and shown by her, requiring little or no
grooming, athletic, smart and great temperament; hence she found the
Boykin Spaniel. Zoe is her first Boykin and Melody has fallen in love with
this breed. The Boykin Spaniel Breed is intelligent, funny, active, gets along
well with adults, kids and other dogs. They are inquisitive, loyal, smart and
just plain fun to be around. All her dogs have obedience training and CGC's
doing Pet Therapy...Zoe will be no exception. Melody has done training in
conformation, obedience, hunt tests and tracking.
Since moving to the dark side (Boykins), Melody is a club member and has
actively participated in all BSCBAA events in her area and has also traveled
to enjoy the fellowship of her Boykin Family. She also is planning to attend
the supported entry in Georgia. This year Melody was excited about taking
her Boykin to the Eukanuba National Championship in Orlando where her
girl, Zoe, earned “Best of Opposite”. This past year she has owner handled
her Boykin to achieve her CH and GCH titles, tried Dock Diving and participated in the WD/WDX certification.
Melody is honored to accept the nomination of BSCBAA Board member
and will bring to the BSCBAA Board and to the club her vast experience, her
compassion, as well as her passion for Sporting Dogs and love of the Boykin
Spaniel breed.

When was the last time you had a good look in your dog's mouth? If he's over 3 years old, there is
a 75 percent chance that he has dental disease—plaque, tartar, and inflamed gums. Besides causing bad breath and tooth loss, infection in the oral cavity can spread to vital internal organs. Oral
disease can shorten your dog's life.
Small-breed dogs are prone to tartar accumulation when very young, which results in the loss of
many teeth by the time they're 10 years old. The problem begins with the formation of a thin,
soft film of food and bacteria—plaque—on the teeth. If left undisturbed, plaque eventually mineralizes and hardens to form tartar.
Meanwhile, bacteria in the mouth cause gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and recession of
the gum-tooth attachment. The natural depression in the gum next to the tooth is called the sulcus, and a healthy sulcus is, at most, a few millimeters deep. But in dogs with severe gingivitis,
gum attachments can break down to depths as
great as 15 millimeters. As the gum recedes, there is a corresponding breakdown of supporting
bone. The tooth becomes abscessed and falls out.
An abscessed small incisor, with just one root, is lost very quickly because it has so little holding it
in place. In contrast, a large carnassial tooth, such as the upper fourth premolar (fourth tooth
behind the upper canine tooth), has three roots and takes much longer to fall out. Each of the
roots must become loose before the tooth is released from its socket.
Larger breeds, such as German Shepherd Dogs, don't collect as much tartar on their teeth so they
are not as prone to gum recession. Though they can have problems with gingivitis and tartar, they
are much more likely to experience tooth fracture. The tooth most commonly damaged is the
upper fourth premolar (PM4). When the outer surface of PM4 is cleaved off, the pulp cavity is
exposed. Ultimately, bacteria invade and travel up to the end of each root, creating an abscess.
This pus pocket causes significant pain.
Whether a dog has an abscessed fractured tooth or tartar and gum disease, the bacteria in his
mouth can penetrate his gums and migrate via the bloodstream throughout his body—the heart,
kidneys, and liver are particularly susceptible to invasion by oral bacteria.
In the heart, bacteria readily settle on the delicate valves, causing scarring that leads to valvular
leakage. Eventually, dogs with leaky valves develop congestive heart failure—an inability of the
heart to pump enough blood forward.
When bacteria land in the kidneys, they stimulate the formation of tiny abscesses that cause deterioration of kidney function. Over time, these changes result in chronic renal failure.
Many dogs with dental disease have elevated liver enzymes. In this case, the bacteria have migrated to the liver, causing infection and tissue damage.
How can you help your canine friend live a longer life? Look in his mouth regularly. If his gums are
cherry red, he has gingivitis. If you smell foul breath, he has a bacterial infection—it might just be
from plaque, but it could be from an abscessed tooth. Remember that it's difficult to assess your
dog for oral pain. In rare circumstances, you may notice that he refuses a hard treat or that he
chews on only one side. But in most cases it isn't until a problem tooth is removed and the dog
exhibits increased vitality that an owner recognizes the agony the dog has been in.
When you detect a problem in your dog's mouth, have him examined by your veterinarian. If he
has minimal gum recession, a proper cleaning both above and below the gum line can help the
gum reattach. If you wait too long, the pockets become deeper (more than three millimeters), the
roots become exposed, and tooth loss becomes an inevitable fact.
Veterinarians see the consequences of mouth infections daily—abscessed teeth, gingivitis, as well
as weak hearts, failing kidneys, and stressed livers. Don't ignore bad breath, discolored teeth, or
red gums in your canine friend. Your dog needs diligent oral care from both you and your veterinarian to live a full and healthy life.

A dog’s need for food, shelter and loving care increases during the cold winter months.
Keep your dog safe and warm by following these guidelines.













Dogs can get frostbite or hypothermia when temperatures drop. Don’t leave your

a doghouse or kennel, for the times the dog is out of doors.
When your dog is inside, keep him warm, dry and away from drafts. Tiles and uncarpeted floors may become very cold, so put down blankets or pads for him to lie on.
Keep your dog a safe distance from supplemental heat sources such as portable heaters and fireplaces, which can
cause severe burns. Place screens around fireplaces.
Don’t leave your dog alone in a car on cold days.
Feed your dog additional calories, particularly if it spends a lot of time outdoors or if it is a working dog. The extra calories are necessary because it takes more energy in the winter to regulate body temperature.
Provide plenty of fresh water at all times. Dogs are just as likely to get dehydrated in winter as in summer. Snow is not
a good substitute for water.
Groom your dog regularly. Your dog needs a well-groomed coat to keep properly insulated. If you have a short-haired
dog, consider a sweater or coat. If your dog is long-haired, clip the hair around its paws to ease snow removal.
Dry your dog with a towel or blow-dryer if it gets wet from rain or snow. Clean snow and ice from its paws to prevent
cuts and cracked pads. A little petroleum jelly may help soften and soothe paw pads.
Be extra careful when walking or playing with your dog near frozen lakes, rivers or ponds. Your dog could slip or jump
in and be seriously injured.
Rock salt, used to melt ice on sidewalks, can irritate paw pads. Rinse and dry your dog’s feet after a walk.
Watch out for spilled antifreeze on driveways. Antifreeze smells and tastes good to dogs, but it can be lethal.
Dogs, like humans, seem to be more susceptible to illness in the winter. Take your dog to the veterinarian if you notice
any signs of illness.

New Jersey Legislation Would Allow Service Dogs on School Buses
(Monday, January 19, 2015)
Current New Jersey law allows students with a disability to bring service animals
into classrooms and school grounds, but fails to specifically allow them to bring
service animals (including service dogs) onto school busses. New Jersey Assembly
Bill 3690 and Senate Bill 2601 seek to remedy that oversight by clearly allowing
disabled students to bring a service animal on school busses. These bills will be
heard by the Senate Health, Human Services, and Senior Citizens Committee on
Monday, January 26, 2015.
