Dear Members,
As your new President of the BSCBAA, let me briefly explain how I came into this position, just
as briefly introduce myself and then bring you up-to-date on club business and other matters.
In this my first newsletter as President, you will find that I am rather direct and to the point.
Due to a work assignment out of the country, Greg Copeland resigned as BSCBAA President in
mid-December, but remains on the BSCBAA board of directors. In accordance with the Bylaws,

three dogs, two of which are Boykin Spaniels that came to us through rescue. We actively
participate in AKC obedience and agility with our dogs. Sheila handles our competing Boykin

ISSUE 01 January, 2011
BSCBAA Board of Directors
It was realized last year that the class, or year of term expiration, of all but one of the board members
was lost with the massive board turnover in late 2008. Discussion, which included the AKC, indicated
that it would not be appropriate to again replace the vast majority of the board all at once. Hence, an
establishment of classes, year when terms will expire, was adopted for each board position. Listed below are the class unanimously agreed upon by the board for each board position identified by member.
Those board members whose tenure expired March 31st due to failure to renew membership are identified below as vacancies.
The board members with their class and state or residence are:
H. R. “Butch” Norckauer, Jr., President, Class of 2012, Alabama
Harold Stanlick, Vice-President, Class of 2011, Wisconsin
Patricia “Pat” Watts, Secretary, Class of 2013, South Carolina
Ginger Hurley, Treasurer, Class of 2013, Texas
Carole Thomas, Alternate, Class of 2013, South Carolina
Greg Copeland, Class of 2011, Texas
Roslin Copeland, Class of 2011, Texas
John Phillips, Class of 2012, Ohio
Hal Roemer, Class of 2012, Texas
Carole Thomas was elected by the board to fill the vacancy created by a board member whose term
expired in 2010. Hence, Carole is in the class of 2013.
Two Class of 2011, two Class of 2012 and two Class of 2013 board positions are vacant as a result of
failure to renew membership. These should be filled at the next board meeting. All class of 2011 positions are up for election this year. Those elected will be the class of 2014. If two members fill the current class of 2011 vacancies, they will be eligible for re-election to the class of 2014. Elsewhere in the
newsletter, please see the nominating committee’s nominees and how and when to apply to challenge
them. You are encouraged to apply to fill the six vacancies which will be filled by the board.

However, this disease does not stop this 6

This is a Boykin who loves and lives his life

When he brings me the ball in his mouth at 4

his impelling amber eyes, it is easy to read his
mind; “mommy, it is time to stop work and
play with me!” Even as I write this he is tossing his ball in the air and then chasing it all
over the house! Oh, and let’s not forget the
cat, Putts, or rather “Dauber’s cat”. They
make for a pair of mischievous buddies! Putts
will taunt Dauber until he chases her up and

This too shall pass continued
I was returning from my appointment when
the cell phone rang. “Are you just about
home?” “Yes, I’m at 27th and Ha…” CLICK
Now my choice is, “Do I hurry, or is there
someplace that I suddenly just have to go?”
Come on, I’m 61 years old, and I have heard
this music before. It can’t be that bad.
“This Too Shall Pass”
It started as a simple hardware installation project in the summer of 2009, a kitchen remodel
with older cabinets and cupboards getting new
paint along with those cute little hydraulic
thingies that keep the cabinet doors from slamming shut. I never seemed to get the one for the
pantry door adjusted just right, and it left the
door open about two inches…the approximate
width of the nose of a Boykin Spaniel. That’s the
dog that, when we used to call our vet, she
would ask, “What did Bonnie eat this time?”
Previously, it had been rat poison, as a puppy.
Only the telltale blue fragments at the edge of
her lip gave us a clue and saved her to torture
and entertain us for the next twelve years. Then
there was a complete pan of cooked brownies
pulled off the countertop. Most of those brownies were consumed along with some of the broken glass. None of this ever required surgery,
just the assurance that “this too shall pass.”
So on that infamous Monday morning, I left for
an early morning workout, leaving the dogs (the
nosey Boykin Spaniel and her sidekick Abby, the
Miniature Schnauzer) loose instead of putting
them back in their kennels. They have been
known to voice their objections about not going
with me since they don’t understand the difference between an appointment with my personal
trainer at the health club and a walk in the park.
I returned home to find the scattered remains of
two plastic bags of powdered brownie mix on the
carpet in the dining room and a plastic bag containing the few remaining crumbs from a full bag
of cornflakes. Now the brownie mix didn’t look
to be a really big deal, right? Just vacuum up the
dry stuff and call it good. Nay, not so! Remember those wet kisses you get when the dogs are
happy? They had been very happy to find the
tasty chocolate mix on the carpeting and had
darkened it to a fine gooey mess in numerous
locations.
I did what I could quietly while my wife continued to sleep contentedly. I left her a sweet little
note that said I would clean it all up when I returned from my 9:00am appointment. The dogs
were properly kenneled to prevent their continued munching on the remains. For now, all was
well, and my wife slept on.
My wife arose while I was gone. It seems that
the cornflakes inside the Schnauzer had begun to
swell like something that would have made the
Pillsbury Bread Dough Boy proud. Upon release
from her kennel she scurried for a spot at the
foot of my wife’s easy chair in the family room
and threw up on the carpet. From there it was
to the living room for a continuation on the sofa
and more spots on the carpet. During the ensuing wife panic caused by the retching schnauzer,
the wind blew the interior door to the garage
open, and the spaniel went out to retrieve the
empty box from the brownie mix. The flexible
box was just big enough to hold onto both sides
of her head when she tried to lick the inside. The
ensuing dog panic caused a spontaneous rear
end eruption in the garage. We must understand that the dog was already being treated
with antibiotics for some intestinal distress that
was caused by ingesting an unknown substance
in the back yard. When rescued from the box,
she also threw up directly in front of the gun
safe, which fortunately for both dogs was locked
at the time.
Since it was snowing lightly, I thought that I
would put my van in the garage. When the
garage door opened, the empty box for the
brownie mix was in the center of my parking space. Not knowing all of the details of
the events in my absence, I thought that I
would just move it and pull on in. As I
walked in to pick it up, my left foot discovered the aforementioned eruption from the
spaniel.
My dear wife of 40+ years is normally such a
sweet, soft spoken lady. All of the frustrations of a sinus infection, outpatient surgery, a chemical facial peel, and a few residual influences of menopause surfaced. You
would think that something so close to
thermonuclear meltdown would just
cleanse everything for blocks.
The visit to the vet with the schnauzer just
continued the saga. You might have heard
the expression “tight as a tick”. This little
seventeen pound dog was wide enough for
landing Navy fighter jets on her deck. The
vet gave her this neat little pill and said that
they would keep her for a while. Later that
afternoon, even the experienced Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine and his able assistant
said that they had never seen so much stuff
come up out of one dog. And for the
rest...”that too will pass.”
So, let’s add this up…
Vet bill for one Miniature Schnauzer
$267.00
Carpet cleaning @ my billable rate 2 hrs @
$150.00 $300.00
Paper towels and misc. cleaning Supplies

Additional Thoughts on What to
do if you lose your Boykin?
In this day and time, you can twitter,
post on facebook or send emails.
Take photos of your dog annually to
use for posting. Try to remember
that your Boykin is probably in the
immediate area and more than not
he/she is within a two mile radius. If
you do not have your Boykin microchip, you need to do so quickly.
There are several options: AKC CAR
ID, AVID or Home-Again. Consult

16. Walk day and night looking for your dog in the area you think he is. Call him, bring his toy
to squeak it. Bring your relatives or friends to help you look. Have a flashlight. Be safe. Don't go
your veterinarian for assistance in
choosing the right one for you and
your pet. Also, your dog should wear
an identification tag with your name,
address and phone number at all
times. This will increase the chances
of your dog being returned to you if
it is lost or runs away.
to dark corners by yourself. Most likely your dog will be out early morning to afternoon and
sleeping at night.
17. Drive your car around looking for your pet. Have others do the same (but make sure

someone is always home for the telephone calls).
18. Respond immediately to any phone calls regarding sightings. Some people may call
and say they saw the dog "2 hours ago". Though the dog may have moved on, check
that area anyway. It's a clue to where he/she might be.
19. Bring pictures of your dog with you (the real one, not newspaper one). People who call you
might actually see other people's lost dogs!!!! If you talk to someone face to face and show

them the actual picture, he/she can positively identify your pet. A black and white photocopy
is not as accurate.
The best thing to do when your pet is missing is to get the community involved. Tell people,
report it to as many relevant organizations as possible and constantly call them to check updates. Get it in the paper, put flyers EVERYWHERE. The more people who know who your dog
is and what he looks like, the more chances you will have of someone spotting him and calling
you or picking him up. You will be amazed at how much support you will get from the community. People will come out of the woodwork to help you and to look for the dog on their own,
whether you are aware of it or not. There will be times when you feel like you are getting
somewhere...and there will be times when you'll feel like you are looking for a needle in a haystack. Anything you do is a step in the right direction. Your dog is a family member. Don't give
up.
