I look forward to the coming years’ opportunities and challenges as the club continues its journey to becoming fully licensed by the AKC to hold various venues. I thank the three board members ending their tenure (Ginger Hurley, Pat Watts, and Carole Thomas) for the time and effort they have provided this club during their three year term on the board. I also welcome our three firsttime ever board members (Jeff Engelmann, Jacquelin DeAngelo, and Troy Blalock) and two returning board members (Dan Reel and Butch Norckauer). We have completed a very busy May/June with our Annual meeting being held in conjunction with a four day dog show in Biloxi, MS. As part of the four day event the club held our first supported entry show on Saturday and had the largest entry of Boykins ever at an AKC event. I would like to thank Leslie Kern and my wife Sharon who co-chaired the event and made it a success. It was good to see all the Boykins and their owners many who traveled some distance to be at the show. For the four days of the show we had many different dogs placing, achieving Majors, or finishing a title. This just showed the quality of the dogs we were able to assemble for these shows. See below a note from our Supported Entry Judge, Debbie Verdon: Dan, President From Judge Verdon Members of Boykin Spaniel Club: It was my honor to judge your first AKC supported entry in Biloxi. These exhibits showed everyone how BSCBAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS & OFFICERS (May 31, 2013) Class of 2014 Tina Hamrick - MD Carol Hill - TX Dan Kauzlarich - IL Rose Leale - TX DeVon Ruth - SC Class of 2015 Harold Stanlick - WI Greg Copeland - TX Roslin Copeland - TX Randall Benzel - TX Michle Machala -TX Class of 2016 Troy Blalock-SC the breed can combine beauty and brains, all the while be competitive. The board has started the planning for next year’s events and I’m sure another supported entry will be one of the events. We do plan a spring AKC hunt test in the South Carolina area for early March 2014 as well as at least one or more club tests. A supported entry is one where the parent club organizes special events around an AKC allbreed dog show. Most supported entries will draw a larger- than- normal entry for the breed thus allowing dogs to vie for those hard-to-find “Majors”. The BSCBAA chose the Pelican Cluster held in Biloxi for our event. This venue not only allowed participants to show their dogs in the Supported Entry but also to showcase their Boykins in three additional all-breed dog shows. The entries for all four days were the largest number of Boykins to show in one location. It was a sight to see so many “Little Brown Dogs” in one ring. For the Supported Entry the Riverside West Kennel Club supplied beautiful rosettes to each class winner and to those Boykins taking home Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, and Select. In addition, the BSCBAA presented an engraved stone or brick trophy to each of these winners as well. The trophies, in part, were sponsored by members of our club. Each trophy was personalized with the BSCBAA logo as well as the event name and date. In addition Club president, Dan Kauzlarich, presented flowers to the Best of Breed winner, GCH Pocotligo’s Nama Karoo MH, owner Christina Gebhard & Kim Parkman. BSCBAA Members that won will be featured on page 6. Judge Deborah Verdon was appreciative of the nice entry presented to her. BOYKINS IN BILOXI continued The event’s fun didn’t stop at the show ring with Saturday’s night banquet being a wonderful success. Dinner was planned and prepared by Leslie Kern and Peggy Martin. The menu featured “Frogmore Stew” complete with a history lesson on how this seafood boil got its name. The evening was concluded with a raffle and auction with some unique prizes being had by the “Lucky”. To participate and be listed in the BDP, you can locate an application at our website at this link: breeder directory program. Please view all details at the above link. If you have any questions, email the breeder coordinator at [email protected] As co-chairs, Leslie Kern and I would like to thank all that helped organize and participated in this event. It was an honor to organize the first Supported Entry. We saw dogs coming from near and far to join in the fun. Sportsmanship and friendships showed throughout the events. Most obvious was the compassion and love we all have for the Boykin Spaniel. The Seminar and Workshop were held in combination with the first Boykin Spaniel AKC Supported Entry Dog Show in conjunction with the Riverside West Kennel Club of Greater New Orleans. In addition to judges, a number of BSCBAA members also attended to further their education on conformation of the Boykin Spaniel. The hands-on workshop portion of the seminar was very exciting due to the number and variety of Boykin Spaniels that the judges had an opportunity to physically view and put their hands on. When judges questions arose, it was nice to have such great examples of the breed readily available to help answer with a stack, a gait, a look or a touch. To Submit A couple of the judges joined the BSCBAA members at our annual banquet. All the judges were excited about the relatively new AKC breed and were already very knowledgeable with the Boykin Spaniel Breed Standard. The program is designed to give our Boykins the opportunity to demonstrate their natural and trained abilities in a NON-COMPETITIVE event. Two award levels may be earned: 1) the WD - Working Dog Certificate Saturday, May 18th Texas Trace cohosted a fun, educational day “Boykins on the Brazos” - along with Leigh & Linda Weld of Classic Labradors and Pecan Acre Kennel. The event was for Boykins, Boykin owners and their families. It was an absolutely gorgeous, if somewhat hot, day. Palmer Weld, a retired, nationally renowned trainer of Labrador retrievers, was the primary judge along with her other half, Leigh Weld, and Roslin Copeland and Greg Copeland. – is for satisfactory work, and 2) the WDX - Working Dog Excellent – is for outstanding work. 48 people were in attendance with 19 Boykin Spaniels. We were approved by the BSCBAA, the AKC Boykin Spaniel parent club, to host a Working Ability Certification Program (WD/WDX), so the day began early at 7:30 am with the WD/WDX. Remember that doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. Make sure your dog has access to plenty of cool, fresh water 24 hours a day. If your dog travels with you, bring along water and a bowl. Never leave your dog in a vehicle on a warm day. Even with the windows open the temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. It's fun to take your dog with you to run errands, but if you can't bring your dog inside the store, it's best to leave him home. Tying a dog outside a store is dangerous because he is exposed to the hot sun and strangers who could be unkind. Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun's heat is less intense. Make sure your dog's vaccinations are up-to-date. Dogs tend to stay outdoors longer and come into contact with other animals more during the summer months. If you are interested in saving a Boykin, visit the Boykin Spaniel Rescue - link is below: www.boykinspanielrescue.org/ Or email [email protected] Keep dogs off lawns that have been chemically treated or fertilized for 24 hours (or according to package instructions), and away from potentially toxic plants and flowers. Visit www.akc.org/pdfs/public_education/hazardous_plants.pdf for a list of toxic plants. Mosquitoes (which carry heartworm disease) along with fleas and ticks are more prevalent in warmer months. Ask your veterinarian for an effective preventive to keep these parasites off your dog. Chlorine from pools and bacteria from streams, lakes and ponds can be toxic for a dog's system. Always rinse your dog with clean water after swimming. Beware of the wildlife that may pose a danger to your swimming pet. Many airlines will not ship animals during summer months due to dangers caused by hot weather. Some will only allow dogs to fly in the early morning or in the evening. Check with your airlines for specific rules. Shipping policies can be found at www.akc.org/pdfs/canine_legislation/airline_chart_0605.pdf. If traveling by car, keep your dog cool by putting icepacks such as frozen water bottles in his crate. DO NOT use freezer ice packs which contain poisonous materials. Make sure the crate is well ventilated. For more traveling tips visit www.akc.org/public_education/travel.cfm. Be aware that asphalt can quickly get hot enough to burn the pads of dogs' paws. In hot weather, walk your dog on the grass or dirt where is it cooler. © The American Kennel Club, Inc. © 2013 The Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Association of America, Inc. 14 AKC BOYKIN SPANIEL TITLES 2012 COMPANION & PERFORMANCE Dog's Full Titled Name Sex Title Date Owner(s) Sunseeker Too Hot Too Handle RN M RN 1/28/12 Tracey Serpi & Gina Plott Isabella NA OAJ F OAJ 1/29/12 Karen Gilliam Hollow Creek's Jake-Watts RE M RE 2/19/12 Anne Elizabeth Crocker & Patricia L Watts Larry's Copper Penney CD RN NAP NJP F NAP 2/19/12 Lawrence Lynch Pocotaligo's Daisy Beal JH F JH 3/4/12 Barry Beal & Kim Parkman Saint Thomas Chief MHR M MHR 3/9/12 Dan Reel Magnolia's Ruby Can Do Brandywine MH F MH 3/31/12 Scott Ruth & Aron Smudy Larry's Copper Penney CD BN RN NAP NJP F BN 4/12/12 Lawrence Lynch Magnolia's Prince Jebediah JHR M JHR 4/15/12 Clifford Olson & Maria Olson CH Sunseeker Kiss My Britches Beekauz RN MH JHR M JHR 4/20/12 Sharon Kauzlarich & DAN KAUZLARICH & Katie Kauzlarich Stevens Creek Just Bit Of Jameson JHR M JHR 4/28/12 Jerry Reese Larry's Copper Penney CD BN GN RN NAP NJP F GN 5/11/12 Lawrence Lynch J & L's Elk View Trigger SH M SH 5/12/12 Bruce Warnimont Richland Stonewall Jackson MHR M MHR 5/18/12 Charles Herb Boulder Brook's Kaycee Gold JH F JH J William Wright Stickpond's Raz-Ma-Taz MHR M MHR 5/19/12 Dan Caton Bogey THD F THD 5/31/12 Richard Gardner Jr. Nashville Minnie CDX RE MX MXJ OF THD F MX 6/17/12 Herber Norckauer, Jr Isabella OA OAJ F OA 6/23/12 Karen Gilliam 5/19/12 CONFORMATION Dog's Full Titled Name Sex Title Date Owner(s) CH Texas Trace China F CH 3/18/12 Greg Copeland & Michelle Copeland CH Dogwood's Lilly F CH 4/12/12 Justin Smithey & Paisley Stevens Knudsen CH Larley's Keeper Of The Code M CH 4/14/12 Dennis Deloatch & Nancy Deloatch GCH CH Texas Trace Sunny Side F GCH 4/28/12 Ginger Hurley End of 2012 and 2013 TITLES WILL BE PUBLISHED NEXT ISSUE AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO PUBLISH ALL TITLES THROUGH TO PRESENT DATE © 2013 The Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Association of America, Inc. DOG OWNERSHIP BRINGS FAMILIES TOGETHER Dog Ownership Brings Families Together Owning a dog can be a great way to bring your family together, get exercise and become involved in activities that are enriching for both dog and owner. In fact, according to the AKC 21st Century Dog Owners Survey, 88% percent said that they consider their four-legged friend to be a member of the family. And, not surprisingly, 90% said they got a dog for companionship. So I've developed my Top 10 list of things you can do with your dog as your family member and companion. 1. Travel "canine" style: Pile your family into the car for a daytrip and visit dog-friendly parks, or beaches, (most parks indicate on their web sites whether and in what areas of the park dogs are allowed). Or if you're up for a bigger excursion, consider a vacation with your best friend. Check ahead for lodging that accepts dogs. If flying, ask about travel accommodations for your dog when you make your reservations. 2. Enroll in canine training classes: Puppy kindergarten, agility, obedience, rally or performance courses are great ways to train your dog, and if your entire family attends, all will be on the same page in regard to training techniques. 3. Become active in competitive dog sports: Showing your canine companion in AKC Conformation, or participating in Obedience and Agility competitions is a family affair. AKC's Junior Showmanship program allows children from ages 9-18 to compete in conformation and performance events, attend seminars, and earn scholarships while bonding with your dog. The events offer opportunities to get involved, stay fit, meet new friends and just have fun! 4. Take the AKC Canine Good Citizen challenge: Enlist your family members to train your dog to achieve her AKC Canine Good Citizen certification, designed to reward dogs that have good manners at home and in the community. 5. Dogs with jobs: Keep your dog active and alert by giving her tasks to complete. Kids can teach her to fetch their dirty laundry and put it in the hamper, while Mom and Dad can train her to fetch the morning paper, carry groceries or empty the dryer. 6. Encourage breed behavior: Find family activities that will encourage your dog to fulfill her breed's purpose, such as retrieving (playing fetch in a swimming pool) or becoming a certified therapy dog (ideal for small companion breeds). 7. Responsibilities don't have to be "ruff": Assigning roles and responsibilities to care for your new four-legged friend can help you and your family work together. Decide who will be responsible for feeding, walking, grooming, etc. Prepare a schedule before bringing your puppy home and assign each family member a task. 8. Visit the vet: A trip to the veterinarian can be a good learning experience for the entire family. Routine check-ups will help keep your dog in top form and can also help teach the children a thing or two about the importance of health and well-being. 9. Help your dog help others: Dogs are invaluable in providing service to humans — visiting the sick, helping the disabled, locating missing persons, and much more. If your dog is of the correct temperament, your family and she can reap the rewards of helping others together! 10. Spend some downtime with your dog: Simply put, one of the greatest things you and your family can do with your dog is play! So start a game of fetch with Fido - playing with your new friend isn't only fun for her — it is guaranteed fun for the entire family! © The American Kennel Club, Inc. © 2013 The Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Association of America, Inc. 16 TEXAS ALERT: WACO MAY CONSIDER MANDATORY SPAY/NEUTER Tuesday, July 9, 2013 The American Kennel Club (AKC) has learned that the City of Waco, Texas, may soon consider a mandatory spay/neuter ordinance. The idea is currently under development by the Waco Animal Welfare Advisory Board, and would have to appear before the City Council before it becomes law. The American Kennel Club strongly supports and actively promotes a wide range of programs to educate the public about responsible purebred breeding practices and the responsibilities of dog ownership. We oppose the concepts of breeding permits, breeding bans, or mandatory spay/neuter of dogs. Instead, we support reasonable and enforceable laws that protect the welfare and health of purebred dogs and do not restrict the rights of breeders and owners who meet their responsibilities. As currently drafted, the idea would require all domestic animals in the City of Waco to be spayed or neutered, except: animals under four months of age; animals due to health reasons certified by a veterinarian to be unfit for sterilization procedures; animals trained for and used in police and rescue work; and animals used for show. The draft ordinance would also make numerous other changes to the City’s animal ordinance. These changes would include a new definition of animal abandonment, humane tethering provisions, mandatory microchipping requirements, and repeal of the current intact animal permit. Click here to read the draft proposal. REMINDERS Volunteers are needed for committees. In coming months, the BSCBAA will be supporting Meet the Breed Events, get involved and volunteer! The Boykin Spaniel Standard ISSUE 10 July, 2013 WHAT YOU CAN DO: Waco residents concerned with the provisions of the draft are encouraged to begin contacting Mayor Malcolm Duncan, Jr., and the members of the Waco City Council, and urge them to pursue reasonable animal control measures that do not restrict the rights of responsible dog owners.
