Dear BSCBAA Members,
With the close of 2013, we can look at the success this club has had
presenting Boykins at various dog events and the experience the Club
had gleaned from conducting these events. Our membership has been
increasing steadily with many excited new members. In 2013 the
Boykin Spaniel has increased it’s presence in AKC with many new titles
ranging from conformation to fly ball. Many of these new titles have
been achieved by you, our members. However, there are many others
who have titled their Boykins that are not part of our parent club. If
you meet these Boykin owners, I would encourage you to discuss with
them joining our club. These people are running their dogs at an AKC
event, we need their support as their AKC parent club.

BSCBAA President’s Letter Continued
This year’s Club accomplishments
are many. The Club held its 2nd
annual hunt test in March at
Mountville, SC. In addition, to cap
off the successful fun filled weekend, B matches in conformation
rally and obedience took place.
Our next event was a club WD/
WDX field event held in May at Pecan Acres Kennel in Chappell Hill,
TX. Many of our Texas Boykins
were successful in achieving club
titles. We followed that event with
the club’s first supported entry
conformation event at the June 1st
Biloxi, MS dog show. The show
had the largest gathering ever of
Boykins at an AKC show. This event
also featured a judges education
seminar, trophies for various winners, a raffle and auction, and
evening shrimp boil prepared by
Leslie Kern. We conducted several
meet the breed events at shows in
Chicago, New York, Houston and
The Eukanuba Dog Show in Orlando.
While the club has been successful,
our individual dogs have had a significant year at various events.
Dan Reel’s Chief became the first
Boykin to achieve 2000 in UKC field
events. Butch Norckauer’s Minnie
earned several advance Agility titles and qualified for the Eukanuba
show. Michle Machala’s Texas
Trace Yellow Rose finished the
year as Best of Opposites for two
years running at Nationals. I congratulate these and all owners and
their dogs who have competed in
events this year.
With a look to the future, the club
has several events planned for
2014 that should be fun and exciting for you and your dog. The
first is our 3rd annual AKC hunt

test being held in Leesville, SC the
first weekend of March. With AKC
approval, we plan to hold an A
match for conformation and obedience during that weekend. This is
one of our last hurdles to achieving
full club licensing with the AKC.
We will be holding our 2nd annual
supported entry conformation
events at the May 3 Marshall, TX
dog show. For the first time the
supported entry will include obedience and rally. The annual meeting
is planned for the Friday evening of
that weekend in Marshall, TX. I
encourage all of our members to
try and attend one of these events
as both should be very enjoyable
weekends for meeting Boykins and
their owners.

Core Vaccines According to AAHA Guidelines
written by Dr. Bill Howard, DVM
I. Distemper; Adenovirus type 2; Parvovirus; Para-influenza
Those vaccines are started at 6 to 8 weeks of age. They should be vaccinated every 3 to 4 weeks until 16
weeks of age. A booster shot is given at one year of age and then yearly or once every third year depending upon exposure risk and mandated laws in various counties across the country.
II. Rabies
Initial or first vaccine in puppies is at 12 to 16 weeks of age. Then revaccination of rabies shot is yearly or
every third year again depending on local laws and upon exposure risk.
Non-Core Vaccines
I. Leptospirosis
This vaccine again depends upon exposure risk. Dogs that have exposure to wild animals, ponds and
lakes should be vaccinated. The vaccine is given in two doses with the first vaccine usually given at 12 to
14 weeks then again at 3 to 4 weeks later. Revaccination is recommended annually for only dogs with
reasonable risk of exposure.
II. Lyme Disease
Dogs living or traveling in high risk endemic areas for Lyme disease should be vaccinated against this
disease. The initial vaccination is at 9 to 12 weeks and booster 3 to 4 weeks later then yearly boosters
are recommended.
III. Bordetella
This vaccine is given on a risk assessment of the dog. Dogs exposed to kennels, training classes, dog
parks or boarding and grooming facilities should be vaccinated for this. The vaccine can be given by
subcutaneous injection, intranasal or oral. Two vaccines are recommended starting about 6 to 8 weeks
of age and again 3 to 4 weeks later. A yearly vaccination is recommended for an “at risk” dog.
IV. Canine Influenza
The recommendation and risk factors for this vaccine is similar to Bordetella. Initial vaccine is at 6 to 8
weeks, then booster is at 3 to 4 weeks later and a yearly vaccination is recommended for an “at risk”
dog.
V. Crotalus (Rattlesnake) Vaccine
This vaccine was developed to provide protection against the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake venom. It may also provide protection against other rattlesnakes with similar venom type. It does not provide against Water Moccasins, Mojave rattlesnakes or Coral snakes. The vaccine stimulates the immune
system to provide anti-bodies against the Rattlesnake venom. A bitten dog will still need further treatment to prevent infections and tissue loss. The first vaccine is at four months of age and the booster is 3
to 4 weeks later. Older dogs will also need two vaccines to achieve perfection. Boosters are recommended to be given on an exposure risk - in high risk areas three boosters a year may be necessary. Boosters
are recommended at the beginning of the hunting season.

MEET THE BREED EVENTS (Cypress/Orlando)
Meet the Breed Event sponsored by the BSCBAA and led by Texas Trace
Boykins was held at the Bridgeland Howl-o-ween Fest in Cypress, TX. The
event was held for Rescue Groups and the BSCBAA directed funds of
$374.66 to the Boykin Spaniel Rescue. It was very successful event with
hundreds of interested people wanting to love on the Boykin Spaniel.

The AKC Meet the Breed at the Eukanuba Nationals in Orlando, Florida was
on December 14-15 2013. The Boykin Spaniels were represented & sponsored by the BSCBAA led by members, Butch & Sheila Norckauer. It was a
successful event with hundreds meeting the Boykins. The booth decorated
with a hunting theme and was great.

NEWS ITEMS FROM THE BSCBAA
STATUS OF COMPLAINT AND
COUNTERCLAIMS
The BSCBAA and twenty-one (21)
present and former board members, committee persons and/or
officers were sued by former members of the Club on May 23, 2013 in
Lexington County, South Carolina.
Your Club and each defendant
moved quickly to defend against
the allegations, which are considered baseless. The Club and most
defendants moved to dismiss the
complaint. Nearly all individual defendants were subsequently dismissed without the need for court
involvement. The Club and one other defendant remain in the suit.
The BSCBAA has filed counterclaims
against the plaintiffs.
Your Club continues to vigorously
defend against the plaintiffs’ claims
and prosecute its counterclaims
against the plaintiff.
An unsolicited settlement offer
from the plaintiffs was received by
your club Monday, October 28,
2013. The settlement discussions
are proceeding -- not as quickly as
might have been expected for various reasons – but discussions are
proceeding.

is a quarterly publication for
January, April, July and October. Publication dates and
deadline submission dates
for newsletter are as follows:
Leave 1/3 of the tail plus 1/4
inch; please use a ruler.
Dock between 3 & 7 days of
age – 3 days is preferred.
There is consistently a natural
indentation where the tail
should be docked. If the measurement falls between joints,
look or feel for the one where
there is a natural indentation. REMEMBERING -- Longer
is preferred.

BSCBAA BOARD NOMINEES
The BSCBAA Board of Directors established the
2014 Nominating Committee for the nomination
of candidates for the five Board of Director
vacancies created by outgoing BSCBAA Board
Members: Tina Hamrick, Carol Hill, Dan Kauzlarich, Rose Leale and DeVon Ruth, we appreciate their service to the club. The Nominees are
for the class of 2017, which means they will
serve a 3-year term. Election of Board members will be conducted in accordance with the
BSCBAA bylaws at its annual meeting in May
2014. The BSCBAA closely follows the BSCBAA
Bylaws on file with the state of South Carolina. We continue to be recognized by the South
Carolina Secretary of State as a non-profit corporation in good standing. In accordance with
the Bylaws, additional nominations of the eligible members may be made by written petition
addressed to the BSCBAA Secretary, Roslin
Copeland, PO Box 781, Cypress, TX 77410 on or
before 15 days after this publication of The
Boykin Spaniel Standard. Additional nominations must include a written acceptance from
the nominee asserting their willingness to serve,
and should include a self-written resume of
background/qualifications to be included with
the ballots. If no valid additional nominees are
received by the secretary on or before 15 days
after this publication of The Boykin Spaniel
Standard, the nominating committee's slate
shall be declared elected at the time of the annual meeting and no further balloting will be
required. If one or more additional nominees
are received by the secretary on or before 15
days after this publication of The Boykin Spaniel
Standard, the secretary will in accordance with
the bylaws mail ballots for voting, return mailing, opening and counting at the annual
meeting. The mailed ballots will include a copy
of each candidate's half page resume.
The 2014 Nominating Committee is Greg

with alternates Dan Kauzlarich and Sheila
Norckauer. The Nominating Committee is
pleased to present the following slate of nominees for the five Board vacancies created by
outgoing BSCBAA Board Members:

Ginger Hurley, Houston, Texas
Ginger owns, breeds and
raises several Boykin Spaniels. Her Boykins have participated in conformation,
hunt test, therapy, agility
and many hunting events.
She loves to handle her own
dogs in the ring. As a breeder, she is devoted to
improving the health of the Boykin Spaniel, to
strengthening its diverse hunting/working abilities and to developing the best all-around family
companion pet.
Ginger is a past Board of Directors member and
past BSCBAA Secretary and is presently serving
as a member of the BSCBAA Education & Standard Committee and serves on several other
BSCBAA Committees. She has been a Boykin
Spaniel advocate and lover of the breed for 15
years and has whelped and bred many litters
and has titled several Boykin Spaniels.
She is a Bachelors graduate of Texas A&M University. Early in her career, she was the head
swimming & diving coach of the University of
Houston. After 11 years of coaching, she dove
into real estate. She has been a part of the
Better Homes & Garden – Gary Greene Real
Estate Company for the past 11 years. In her
spare time, she enjoys all things with her Boykin
Spaniels - swimming, handling, bird hunting.
As a board member of the BSCBAA, Ginger will
work hard to continue growth with the Parent
Club’s membership; will continue advocating for
the participation of Boykin Spaniel in various
AKC events and will continue educating many
about the versatility of the Boykin Spaniel
Breed.
Beth Crocker, Columbia, SC
Anne "Beth" Crocker is
currently located in Central, SC just outside of
Clemson University. Beth
currently owns Jake, a 5
year old Boykin Spaniel
and her frequent companion to various events
and competitions, including AKC hunt test, UKC
retriever tests, Rally, Obedience and conformation. They are also often accompanied by
Madison, the Gordon Setter.
Beth has been actively involved in the Greater
Columbia Obedience Club as a Rally instructor
for a number of years and enjoys working with
new, as well as advanced, dog and handler
teams learning the sport of Rally.
She is actively showing Jake at the AKC Senior
Hunter level, UKC Started level, Rally RAE level
and Obedience Pre-Novice level, in addition to
working towards his AKC Championship. Beth
supports and actively campaigns Jake as a wellrounded and versatile example of the Boykin
Spaniel breed. Beth and Jake are frequently
approached and spend time talking with all
sorts of people about the qualities of the breed,
its status as the State Dog of South Carolina, the
importance of health inquiries when choosing a
puppy and the overall benefits of being a responsible pet owner and companion of the
Boykin Spaniel. Future goals include doing Therapy work with Jake and also
Tracking.
Beth is a member of the Gordon Setter
Club of American, the BSCBAA, the Greater Columbia Obedience Club, the Dog
Obedience Club of Greenville, the Clemson Kennel Club and has recently filed
paperwork to be a founding member of
the Carolina Irish Setter Club (under the
parent club - Irish Setter Club of America).
When Beth is not spending time with her
dogs, she works at Clemson University as
an attorney, she also enjoys running and
entering various road races up the 1/2
marathon level, and has found that Jake is
a always willing and relentless training
companion :)
As a member of the BSCBAA Board, Beth
would like to support and encourage
growth in the Club membership with people who may not be aware of the Club and
its support of the Breed. She has a strong
interest in continuing to establish the
Parent Club and when appropriate would
like to see a stand alone Boykin National
Specialty event, regional clubs formed so
as to continue the growth of supported
entries and events, and continued development of information and resources
available to Boykin Spaniel owners and
fanciers that encourage the well rounded,
versatility of this great little brown
hunting dog and companion.
William Howard, DVM
William (Bill) Howard
DVM lives in Gladewater, Texas and graduated
from Texas A&M University in 1973. He is a veterinarian and has been
practicing for over 41
years. His practice is
currently in Longview, Texas. Howard’s
longtime wife is Jan and they have two
daughters and four grandchildren. Bill is
serving as the chair of the BSCBAA Health
& Genetics Committee and will regularly
be writing articles in The Boykin Spaniel
Standard concerning health issues and
research.
Dixie, his Boykin spaniel and companion is
almost 5 years old. Dixie has grown into a
great hunter and they hunt anything that
flies. Dixie is an exceptional dog that has
been awarded her WDX by the BSCBAA.
Bill thinks very highly of Dixie and plans to
breed her in the very near future. Bill sees

many different breeds of dogs on a daily basis
and he chose the Boykin Spaniel as his personal
hunting dog for their overall versatility, size,
heart to hunt and their reputation for great
companionship. Bill thinks keeping the “hunt”
in the breed is very important.
Bill, as a BSCBAA Board Member will continue
his support of the Boykin Spaniel Breed through
his knowledge as a veterinarian to promote the
health and genetics of the breed.
Alanna Ramirez, Seattle, WA
Alanna and her husband
Michael live in a suburb of
Seattle with their two
Boykin Spaniels, Stella and
Lucy. Alanna’s introduction
to the breed was in 2000,
she resided in Florida and
Michael was in Atlanta when she and Michael
began dating. Michael's Boykin Java was loving,
intelligent, protective and above all total water
dog. Lake, puddle or pool, it didn’t matter to
Java, she loved to play or swim in the water.
Alanna fell completely in love with the breed.
While, Michael found himself traveling to the
West Coast every week with his IT job, Alanna
was able to relocate to Atlanta and help with
taking care of Java. During the week, Alanna
and Java were at the park every afternoon in
Roswell, Georgia and on the weekend, hours
were spent at Lake Lanier where Java would
swim chasing her ball or toy. She loved their
1994 Jeep Wrangler, strapped into the back
with her goggles on as the wind blew in her face
and her ears flopping; she loved to ride!
Michael was offered a job in Seattle that could
not be passed up. In February 2007, Alanna,
Michael and Java drove across country in three
days. Java was outstanding travel companion
and enjoyed every place; especially in Billings,
Montana where the snow was deep and fresh.

Alanna works in the IT field where she started in
1987. Her resume has a mix of local government, packaging industry and commercial experience. Alanna when not working in the IT field
likes to cook, read, watch movies and frequently
enjoys taking the dogs on new outdoor adventures. Alanna’s spirit and enthusiasm for the
breed has led her to this great opportunity as a
BSCBAA Board Member. She accepts this important service and is dedicated to furthering
the breed’s notoriety.

Joshua Simmons, Broken Arrow, OK
Joshua resides in
Broken Arrow,
Oklahoma and
presently works as
an Environmental,
Health and Safety
Manager for a
Natural Gas Pipeline Company out of Tulsa, Ok. He has been
working in the EH&S field for over 10 years. He
is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified
Safety Professional. Joshua received his Master
of Science of Public Health Degree from
Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical
Medicine in New Orleans, LA. He has served in
the Army National Guard for 12 years with one
tour in Iraq as the company commander in an
Engineer Battalion from Arkansas.
Hudson at Christmas—Kaylyn Dodson
Joshua is an avid hunter and loves working with
hunting dogs. He has been working hunting
dogs for over 35 years. He grew up with Brittany Spaniels and Llewellyn Setters. In 1997 he fell
in love with Duck hunting and 1999 purchased
his first Golden out of the Sun Golden line. He
met his first Boykin in 2008, and fell in love immediately and knew he had to have one. He
purchased Ruby, his first Boykin Spaniel and
hasn’t looked back since.
In January of 2012, their beloved Java had contracted cancer at age 14 and was laid to rest.
For the next several months, they came to
peace about their loss and decided they couldn’t live without a Boykin Spaniel as their companion. So, they decided it was time to bring
another one into their lives. Michael and Alanna
checked out the Boykin Spaniel Rescue and the
AKC Parent Club’s website and decided on a
breeder. They picked up Stella in 2013 and
quickly decided they needed a second Boykin
Spaniel, Lucy. Both girls are total rock stars at
the park, at training days and at home. Alanna
and Michael enjoy all of the outdoor living and
dog friendly options that Seattle has to offer
from all the hiking trails, to all the various parks,
Joshua is honored to accept the nomination of
BSCBAA Board member and hopes to bring his
experience and knowledge of hunting dogs to
help promote the Boykin Spaniel and to maintain the intended hunting instinct in the breed.

AKC Family Dog Offers Tips on Improving Your Dog's Dental Health
Just as we care for our teeth daily, our dogs should be no different. Being proactive
will help prevent bad breath, gum disease, and oral infections. In honor of National
Pet Dental Health Month, AKC Family Dog magazine offers the following important
tips for keeping your dog’s teeth and gums clean and healthy:

Daily brushings at home: Gently brushing your dog’s teeth and gum line daily helps

to remove any plaque buildup. If you don’t brush your dog’s teeth regularly, the
plaque mineralizes and forms hard tartar. Tartar becomes a spot for bacteria to collect, and the gum recedes from the tooth. If the depression around the tooth known as the sulcus deepens, it could result in severe gum disease.
Professional cleaning: Regular oral care and professional cleanings can also help keep your dog’s chompers clean. Your
vet can provide a thorough cleaning and remove any tartar that regular brushings can’t.
Dental toys: Chew toys can also help improve your dog’s dental health. Chewing on a nylon or rubber toy helps to
scrape away buildup on your dog’s teeth.
Warning signs: You should take your dog to the vet if he has inflamed gums. It could be a sign of severe tooth problems.
The most common sign of dental pain is lethargy. It’s important to regularly examine your dog’s teeth because untreated oral infections could spread to the kidneys, heart, or liver.

Obedience and Rally Regulation Changes
Event Bulletin: Obedience and Rally Regulation Changes
The AKC Board VOTED to amend five sections of the Obedience Regulations and one section of the AKC Rally® Regulations to make the events more enjoyable.
These changes are effective January 1, 2014; please share this information with your Obedience/Rally Trial Chairmen and Trial Secretaries/Superintendents.
In summary the changes (underlined below) are:
Allow premium lists to measure not less than 5½ x 8½ inches up to 8½ x 11 inches. (Obedience Regulations Chapter
1, Section 3)
Require clubs to refund the entry fee for females in season. A processing fee may be retained by the club.
(Obedience Regulations Chapter 1, Section 14)
Allow clubs, at their option, to establish a wait list to fill openings created by entries that are withdrawn prior to the
event closing date. (Obedience Regulations Chapter 1, Section 27)
Allow dogs to be picked up by their handlers when they are called back into the ring for the awards ceremony.
(Obedience Regulations Chapter 2, Sections 11 & 22)
Allow rally ring sizes to be determined by square footage (2,000 to 3,000 square feet, with a minimum width of 30
feet). This will provide clubs flexibility in determining the location of their rally trial, perhaps allowing them to lower
their cost. While the square footage area listed above is the minimum size allowed, a 40’ x 50’ or 50’ x 60’ ring size
is ideal for rally. (Rally Regulations Chapter 2, Section 1)

Section 3. Premium Lists/Entries. A premium list must be provided for sanctioned "A", licensed or member trials.
The premium shall be printed and shall measure not less than 5½ x 8½ inches or more than 8½ x 11 inches.

MY FIRST BOYKIN SPANIEL, DESIE by Roslin Copeland
There's nothing like your first Boykin Spaniel!
and she never wanted to stop.
My first was Bella’s Destiny. I have had many come
through my home as rescues, training and breeding but
there’s nothing like your first.
The photo below is the picture of Desie on her last car
ride in route to the vet.
Desie lived to 14 years of age. As evidenced by grayhaired face, cataract-glazed eyes and tired look from
arthritic bones, she lived a great fulfilling long life, a
“hell of a life”. She was a wonderful friend, companion
and an awesome hunter. She had a tremendous desire
to live life to the fullest. She had a "never quit" attitude
that thrived in the yard with bumpers, to the hunting
fields flushing and retrieving birds, to her final minutes
and breath of life.
She was tenacious and determined to get the spoils no
matter the size or the conditions. There are many tall
tales to be told that will fill my heart for years to come.
I will share just a few.
There was one dove season in south Texas where lots
of doves flew by and Michelle, the shooter, missed a
few birds. Desie was very patient at first but grew weary of the misses. She finally could not hold back her disappointment and began voicing her opinion. At one
point Michelle thought Desie was going to take the
shotgun and shoot the birds herself. Desie did get to
retrieve a few in the end. Another time was on a
pheasant hunt where many doubted that the little
brown Desie could hold a big bird let-a-lone retrieve a
big one through the tall milo and rolling thick grasslands. I, of course, had problems walking through, but
Dez proved them wrong and met everyone's day's limit
Desie earned her weight pull title. I will never forget our
first show and the look on people's faces when we walked
in with a 29 lb brown curly haired dog. You could hear the
snickers and feel the unwelcoming environment. She
quickly earned their respect and was the darling of the
show. People were leaving the conformation ring to come
catch a glimpse of the little brown dog that would never
quit. There was a large cheering crowd as she pulled over
500 lbs and won 1st place in her division.
She was the pack leader and protector of all her tribe; she
possessed no fear as demonstrated by her fighting off copperheads, water moccasins, large possums and numerous
other creatures and humans who meant harm to her or
her tribe. She would not hesitate to protect with her life.

My First Boykin Spaniel, Desie continued
Once she jumped in between one of her young and a
copperhead. She fought and flung the snake until it was
killed. She was bit in several places and lost a portion of
her tongue that night and to her last days had difficulty
drinking water with half a tongue.
Look here and see at 9 weeks old, the 5th generation has
Desie’s retrieving ability.
She touched many lives along the way. She became an
unknowingly great therapist, laughed with many during
troubled times, consoled some during depressing times,
licked with her half tongue and loved like a good friend.
All kidding aside, she knew she was great! Ginger can
attest to Desie’s therapy methods as she became her
good listening buddy during trying times.
It would be regretful if I failed to mention her greatest
ability. She was Houdini, the Boykin Spaniel. She could
escape out of anywhere or anything. If you thought
there was no way, well guess what, there was always a
way. It was truly amazing and at one point, I thought
we should go on a circus run to show off her talent.
As good as she was with hunting, Houdini escapes, loyalty, attitude, physical strength and therapy she lacked
with conformation. She however was a great Mom and
has thrown off not only great hunting dogs but excellent conformational show ring champions and grand
champions over four generations and counting. I see a
little of Desie in all her prodigy, but there will never
again be a Desie, my first Boykin.
It was fitting that Greg, my brother who introduced me
to Boykins and who led me to Desie was there as we lay
her to rest at the Texas Trace Ranch. I said a few last
words to my ole buddy and teared up; Ginger cried and
Greg read some wonderful words and released quail to
the skies for her to chase. She has peacefully passed on
and no longer has pain. She has produced her 5th generation and I’m sure many to come as her legacy lives on.

UPDATE: Washington State: House Committee to VOTE on Prohibiting BSL
Tuesday, January 28, 2014
UPDATE: If you have not already called or emailed the House Judiciary Committee
members in support of House Bill 2117, please do so. The committee will take a
vote in executive session on Thursday morning. This is an excellent opportunity for
the American Kennel Club to support a positive measure for responsible dog owners.
On Tuesday, January 16th the Washington State House Judiciary Committee heard
testimony on House Bill 2117, which would amend the state’s dangerous dog law
and prohibit local governments from banning possession of a particular breed or
declaring a specific breed of dog to be dangerous or potentially dangerous.

NY Assembly Approves Debarking Ban
Friday, January 24, 2014
The New York Assembly voted to approve a state ban on debarking. The bill now
goes to the Senate Agriculture Committee. In 2013, an identical bill passed the Assembly but was held by the Senate Agriculture Committee.
It is imperative that New York residents and those who participate in dog events in
the state contact the committee TODAY and ask them to once again oppose Assembly Bill 1204.
The AKC opposes this bill, which would restrict the rights of responsible dog owners
to make viable, safe decisions on behalf of their pets in conjunction with their veterinarians.
There is much misinformation about the veterinary surgical procedure of debarking. Debarking is a viable veterinary procedure that may allow a dog owner to keep
a dog in its loving home rather than to be forced to euthanize or surrender it to a
shelter when the pet's noisy behavior continually disrupts the community.
Debarking should only be performed under anesthesia by a qualified veterinarian
after behavioral medication efforts to correct a dog’s excessive barking have failed.
As with other veterinary medical decisions, the decision to debark a dog is best left
to individual owners and their veterinarians.
