WHEN IT’S MORE THAN A GAME
Those who had the privilege of being at West PrestonLakeside’s President’s Luncheon on Sunday July 3
shared one of the great performances in the club’s
history.
However, the performance didn’t take place on the turf
of J.E. Moore Park, but at a gathering inside the club
rooms pre-game.
It had been bought to the Club’s attention that one
of its own, Djarran Graham – a player in the club’s
under-13 team – was facing some significant health
challenges.
West Preston-Lakeside fully embraced the fundraising
required to alleviate some duress on DJ and his family,
and a post went out on the club’s website encouraging
the West Preston-Lakeside community to support the
worthy cause.
As news filtered through to the senior players, a wave
of emotion swept through the ranks, and a call to arms,
led by captain Joel McDonald and coach Leigh Cole,
provided the impetus for one of the most thoughtful
and considerate courses of action taken by any team in
the Club’s history.
The players, all unsolicited, undertook a fundraising
campaign, which included a special team meeting held
by the seniors, where it was decided to donate a large
percentage of all players and coaches match payments,
and extended to those players in the reserves, who
dropped in their ‘hard earned’ to support one of the
club’s family members .
The campaign netted $4,000 in funds, and an
unqualifiable amount in goodwill.
It is said that the best way to test the strength of
anything, is to place it under duress, and see how it
performs. One of West Preston-Lakeside’s own was
under duress, and found strength from his club and its
constituents.
So what do we make of all this? How do we attempt
to quantify the value of what it means to be part of a
community who understands it’s obligation to its own.
Perhaps Cesar Chavez said it best:
“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget
about progress and prosperity for our community.
Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the
aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for
our own.”
Remember, it’s more than a game!

STOP. ONE PUNCH CAN KILL ROUND
All matches in the NFL this week will support STOP.
One Punch Can Kill – raising awareness of the dangers
and devastation of social violence.
Violence not only affects the victim and their families
but also the offender – there are no winners. Lives
changed forever. There are no acceptable levels of
violence, violence should never be an option, it’s
destructible, irreparable and deadly and there are no
winners.
We are all well aware of coward punch attacks that
have led to many deaths over the past few years. Many
know victims who have been killed as a result of these
senseless acts of violence.
Many have played footy with them, gone to the same
school, socialised with them and many have been
affected by the sheer randomness and senseless loss
of life due to a moment of madness, aggression and
thuggery. Violence can happen to anyone at anytime…
it is often random and unprovoked.
From the year 2000-2016 we have had approximately
108 deaths as a result of social/street violence. In 2016
alone there have been 9 senseless deaths. This does not
begin to measure the devastation, pain and grief that
the victims’ families are going through.
The victims’ lives cut dramatically short – all their plans,
goals gone in a split second. Victims included in these
statistics of social/street violence are also women. This
adds to the ever growing family violence epidemic and
also needs immediate attention.
There are many contradictions in our society of what is
acceptable behaviour in our society. We keep accepting
bad behaviour and violence as part of our culture. This
violent culture is at times present in different sporting
codes and that is also sending the wrong message.
Sometimes the line between aggression and violence is
blurred. At times spectators applaud it and encourage
it and this has to change. We need good role models at
all levels in our community, sporting, corporate, media,
artists, etc.
We need to nurture and guide our young. First and
foremost this must begin at home. Parents must create
a safe, loving and nurturing environment. This is then
further supported within sporting clubs by creating
a safe environment where participation encourages
4

confidence, social skills, sporting skills leading to
lifelong experiences.
We believe all individuals must take responsibility for
their actions and in particular what they consume.
Excessive consumption of alcohol and or drugs can lead
to aggression and violence.
Violence is not always triggered by these as they can
be inherent in the makeup of individuals. The excessive
consumption of alcohol and or drugs can also impair
the senses and can leave a person vulnerable to
becoming a victim. Their ability to react to violence or
danger can be impaired.
All individuals must honestly assess what the
consumption of these drugs do to their bodies. If you
become violent after consuming five drinks, then just
have three drinks. We are not saying not to drink, but
understand the triggers.
Also understand how you react to disappointment,
an argument, etc. Do you lose control and lash out?
Do you become verbally abusive? There are many
scenarios. Identify what these triggers are and change
your behaviours, get help from a professional, family or
friends. You are not alone.
Being a true mate is very important. Taking
responsibility is paramount, but looking out for your
mates is a key factor in social settings. Have an honest
conversation with your mate if they are behaving badly
or aggressively. Don’t encourage these bad behaviours.
If your friend has had one too many, get them home.
We encourage “party safe” and “get home safe”. As a
community we deserve and expect “safe streets” and
we all can play a part towards this.
The answer is simple “KEEP YOUR FISTS DOWN AND
WALK AWAY”

COUGARS FINDING FORM AT RIGHT TIME
by Dan Campbell
With five rounds to go, Northcote Park has pushed its
way back into finals contention.
The Cougars have joined the battle for fifth spot on the
Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 ladder and sit equal
on points with Montmorency, West Preston-Lakeside
and Eltham.
Among their results over the past month are wins
over fellow aspirant Eltham, finals-bound Bundoora,
and Lower Plenty – who the Cougars defeated at the
weekend for their first away win of the season.
Senior coach Harmit Singh knows the enormity of
the next five weeks, as his side jostles for its secondsuccessive finals appearance.
“We find ourselves in a bit of a logjam for fifth now with
five rounds to go,” Singh told The Northerner.
“It’s been pleasing to get a little bit more consistency in
terms of our playing performances (and) that obviously
translates to more reward for effort.”
Singh has always believed in the evenness of Division
1, despite the likes of Heidelberg and Greensborough
currently occupying first and second places on the
ladder outright.
“I said this when I first came into the competition,
that it’s a very even competition. I feel it was the same
case last year – I don’t feel there are any easy games in
Division 1,” he said.
“There are a couple of sides towards the top of the
ladder well-entrenched in their positions, but it is
still very even and there’s plenty to play for, for all the
remaining sides trying to get into the finals.”
Northcote Park has enjoyed a strong record at home
this season, winning five of its six matches at Bill Lawry
Oval. Hosting Whittlesea this weekend, the Cougars will
be out to avenge their Round 9 loss to the Eagles.
The Cougars have been met with a number of injury
hurdles this year, including the pre-season losses of
two-time best and fairest Nick Carter, forward recruit
Simon Andrews, utility Jake Mills and leadership group
member Wade Demasi.
They also lost both of their 2015 ruckmen Joel West and
Oliver McEwan in the transfer period.
“In an ideal world, I’d love to have all those four
boys playing, but what it has done is given some
opportunities to the younger guys,” Singh said.
“We’ve had three or four under-19s playing some weeks
in our side which is really positive for the club – (Lachlan)
Boscarini, (Daniel) Costanzo and (Paul) Steinicke have
basically played the whole season in the seniors.
“I think it’s exciting for the club at the same time as well,
that there are guys ready to step up from the reserves
and under-19s.”
Inspiration captain Bronik Davies is enjoying yet
another stellar season ahead of his 100th game for the
club this weekend.
“He will go down in Northcote Park history as one of
the greatest players. (He’s) certainly the best captain
I’ve played alongside or coached,” Singh said.
“(Bronik) is just an outstanding person and leader of
men (and) his ability to play at a consistently high level
week-in, week-out is enormous.
“For someone with that much ability, he’s very selfless
– he’ll always look to help others and how he can make
them better.”
Young-guns Lachlan Boscarini and Gerard Sutton are
enjoying life in the leadership group, and have proved
integral parts of the Cougars’ backline this season.
“Both those boys are in our leadership group and they
have provided a lot of run and drive from our back six,”
Singh said.
“But also they’ve been quite sound at defending first
and foremost, especially Sutton - he’s an outstanding
defender. He sets the benchmark in terms of his ability
when we don’t actually have the footy.”
Collingwood-listed VFL utility Jordan Collopy has had an
impact in his three matches for the Cougars this season.
The 22-year-old has been prolific through the midfield
to feature in the club’s best in the past fortnight.
“We’ve been fortunate enough to have Jordan the last
couple of weeks. His form at VFL level has been really
strong but given the injuries at Collingwood at the
moment have decreased, he’s sort of been squeezed
out,” Singh said.
“He’s kicked eight goals in two games playing midfield
– just a super, super player. He’s been able to give us a
lot of run and carry – very strong at stoppages.
“The boys have definitely been impressed with him and
how selfless he’s been when he’s come back to us, and
his attitude.”

BULLS GIVE FINALS HOPES MAJOR BOOST
by Jarryd Barca
Bundoora has maintained its spot in the top four
on the Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 ladder after
defeating Eltham by 43 points in Round 13.
The Bulls bounced back from their Round 12 defeat to
Northcote Park in epic fashion, leading at every change
to triumph 16.7 (103) to 8.12 (60) at Yulong Reserve.
The win keeps their chance of a top-three finish well
and truly alive and puts them two wins and percentage
inside the top five.
Eltham has now fallen to the back of the pack of
teams chasing a finals place, sitting in eighth position.
However, losses to rival clubs Montmorency and West
Preston-Lakeside means percentage alone is keeping
the Panthers from the top half of the table.
Midfield was the key battleground and it was there the
Panthers were simply blown away.
Anton Woods, Chris Brannan and Gavan Connelly
battled manfully for the visitors, but the Bulls’
midfielders gorged on clearances and contested ball,
and victory for them never looked in doubt.
Matthew Dennis had a major say in the game and
completely outplayed his opponents, being just as
damaging on the ground as he was aerially.
Troy Barbero, Brendan Carlyon and Jack Furlong were
all influential in the victory, breaking lines and piling
on the inside 50s, while Daman Aujla dominated the
match booting three goals.
Connelly was the only multiple goal-kicker for the
visitors with three majors. The Panthers struggled to
break the home side’s defensive shackles, scoring just
four goals in each half as they were simply outclassed.
Bundoora kicked six goals in a dominant first term –
Aujla and Luke Simpson grabbing two apiece – and
never looked like losing from there, with the Panthers
all but kicking themselves out of the contest with
inaccuracy in front of goal.
Anton Woods opened the scoring to give the Panthers
an early lead with a long-range counter-attacking goal
after Bundoora had much of the play in the early stages.
Sean Bolger also found himself on the end of a fastbreak goal, but the Panthers not making the most
of their opportunities had them punished for the
remainder of the quarter.
The Bulls kicked four of their first-quarter goals in as
many minutes and were clinical in the way they were
moving the ball in this patch, completely isolating
Eltham’s defenders to take a 21-point lead into the first
break.
Eltham began the second quarter superbly and its
tackling pressure was a standout as Matthew Evans
sailed through his side’s third goal of the game.
More dominance from the visitors resulted only in a
host of behinds, but a long-range and well-earned Chris
McCabe goal from a turnover brought the margin back
to just five points.
Bundoora would again wrestle back the momentum
late in the second quarter with goals to Gary Moorcroft,
Dominic Nixon and Isaac Muller, taking the margin back
out to 23 points at half time.
Gavan Connelly got the Panthers off to a flyer in the
third term with a goal that gave the impression the
game was still up for grabs. Eltham’s early ascendancy,
however, was instantly wasted with countless turnovers
entering the forward line.
The home side began to chip away at the contest
and a sudden lack of intensity from the visitors led to
simple goals to Moorcroft, Carlyon and David Mitchell
– thereby guaranteeing the game was over with a
37-point buffer at three quarter time.
Eltham couldn’t bridge the gap in the final term and
the damage had been done. Further goals to Aujla,
Dennis and Ben Shelton capped off what was a strong
performance from the seemingly finals-bound Bulls.
FINAL SCORE: Bundoora 16.7 (103) def Eltham 8.12 (60)

DEMONS END BLUES’ WINNING STREAK
by Michael Thompson
Mernda moved a step closer to the cherished double
chance in Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3, taking down
competition leader Epping by 29 points.
The 13.12 (90) to 9.7 (61) win meant the Demons
remained a game clear of Watsonia on the ladder, ahead
of their big clash at A.K Lines Reserve in Round 15.
It was Epping who got the jump, however. Having
controlled much of the early play, the Blues were able
to kick clear in the opening 10 minutes, with goals from
Joel Dunmore and Jason Stavely giving them an early
13-point buffer.
However, Mernda slowly began to get back into the
contest, and started to get the game on its terms, with
its run proving to be pivotal. Daniel Bryant was able to
kick the Demons’ first goal at the 15-minute mark.
The second quarter proved to be Mernda’s best of the
season. The visitors were frequently getting an overlap
based on their running prowess, featuring frequent
breaking of lines and plenty of running handballs.
Despite this, inaccuracy was keeping Epping well in the
hunt – the Demons kicking 4.7 for the quarter.
Luke Drakes opened the scoring for the Demons in the
opening minute of the second, before Matthew Tarr
kicked two goals in the space of a minute to allow the
Demons to open up a lead.
While they had many gettable opportunities, they
did miss a chance to put the game away well before
half-time, and were made to pay when Kevin Kiernan
snapped a clever goal for Epping.
Just prior to half-time, Andrew O’Reilly was able to
part the seas deep in attack, breaking through to kick
another goal for the Demons and opening up a threegoal half-time lead.
The first five minutes of the third quarter proved to be
crucial for Mernda as it doubled its lead in a flash.
Anthony Cardamone snapped a goal, before Luke
Drakes kicked an even better goal just a couple of
minutes later. When David Hutchinson added another,
there was a sense that Mernda could perhaps run away
with the game.
However, as plenty have now become accustomed,
Epping fought back. Aaron Willitts and Dean Delaney
fought a good battle throughout the day, but it was the
Epping spearhead who kicked two quick goals. Thomas
Hughes added another to reduce the margin to 16
points at three quarter time.
With the game on the line, Epping tried to make a
move, and got the perfect start when Daniel Moore
kicked a goal three minutes in to reduce the margin to
10 points. However, that was as close as his side got.
Jake Stavrevski kicked a clutch goal from the pocket to
extend the margin back to 18 points, yet the majority
of the last quarter was goal for goal as both sides kept
fighting.
Kiernan kicked his second for the game to reduce the
margin yet again, before Shannon McVeigh converted
from a 50m penalty.
Willits was able to give Epping life yet again, but the last
10 minutes proved to be all Mernda, with Adrian Stefanile
kicking two quick goals, and Stavrevski converting again
to hand the Demons an important win, ending Epping’s
nine-match winning streak in the process
Stefanile was terrific for Mernda while captain Les
Adams and young gun Anthony Bradford relished the
opportunity to play against their former side. For Epping,
Lucas Aquilina and Thomas Sullivan were the main
contributors, while Willitts broke even with three goals.
FINAL SCORE: Epping 9.7 (61) def by Mernda 13.12 (90)

LIONS KEEP IN TOUCH WITH TOP FOUR
by Doug Long
South Morang remained in the Heidelberg Golf Club
Division 3 finals race after an emphatic 47-point win
over Banyule in heavy conditions at Mill Park Lakes
Reserve in Round 14.
Paul Harrison booted seven goals for the Lions – all
from marks and most of them contested – in the 16.4
(100) to 7.11 (53) victory.
South Morang was in control with a 39-point lead at
the main break. Any flickering hope Banyule may have
had was extinguished in a 6.0 to 2.5 third term – with
Harrison slotting four for the term for the hosts.
“It was a positive to have 22 good contributors after a
disappointing game last week,” South Morang coach
Dean Grainger said after the game. “The boys got back
to enjoying their footy today.”
The Lions had winners on every line. Luke Shelton is
having a terrific year and continued on his merry way in
the midfield and down forward. He won the ball on the
inside and got it out to players in space.
James Hewson scored two opportunist goals for South
Morang in one of his best games for the season. The
other multiple goal-kicker was Ben Nesci. He nailed one
of his two goals in the third term when he ran onto the
ball in hectares of space and dashed inside 50 to score.
When Banyule went forward, Mathew Robinson
repeatedly repelled attacks. He blanketed Bears forward
Jake Hooper and took several key intercept marks.
The Lions were up by 25 points to nil late in the first
term, but the game was tight for most of the early
stages. Livewire Daniel Caruso’s goal for South Morang
was the only score in the first 12 minutes.
Down by 25 points, the Bears attacked for the latter
part of the opening stanza for a return of three behinds.
At the quarter time break, Banyule coach Jason Plant
asked his team to tighten up on their opponents and
asked each player to work hard to ensure his opponent
could not be an option.
His team began well in the second quarter with an early
goal to Alex Carapetis. Soon after they had evened up
the scoring shots, but trailed 1.4 to 4.1.
Three goals in quick time by the Lions put a space
between them and their opponents and controlled the
game thereafter.
Banyule won the final term by three goals to one and
fought the game out well after being totally outplayed
when the contest was up for grabs.
The final term highlight was a handball out from
Banyule’s Beau Parthenides to Alex Carapetis, who
dummied around an opponent, ran inside 50 and
kicked a major.
The Bears had few clear winners on the day, but coach
Jason Plant was pleased with the efforts of Ryan Keys
on the dangerous Kane Maghamez – who was goalless.
“Credit to South Morang – who came ready to play,”
Plant said.
“Our guys were a bit passive early and let them dictate
terms. We fought it out well, but you don’t give a good
team a start like that and expect to win. We have a lot
of hard work to do in order to compete and that’s what
we will do.”
Banyule heads off to Whatmough Park in Round 15 to
play St Mary’s. South Morang will be the last team to
travel up the highway to play Kilmore.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview
THE RACE IS ON
A game and percentage clear of the chasing pack, the
top four sides have established a handy lead on their
rivals after 13 rounds in Meadows Greyhounds Division 1.
With Heidelberg sitting pretty in first place, the fight
for the final two places inside the top three looks to
be down to three – Greensborough, Macleod and
Bundoora. A logjam has developed in the middle of
the ladder, with four sides all locked on 24 points.
The winner of Bundoora v Greensborough will take
a monumental step forward in their quest for a double
chance in the finals.
It was an impressive Bundoora outfit that showed up
last week, moving one step closer to securing a 16th
successive finals berth when it downed Eltham by 43
points. Damandeep Aujla returned from the Northern
Blues to put in a best on ground showing, while
Matthew Dennis continued his outstanding season.
Greensborough will be on the hunt for its fourthconsecutive win, and will also be looking to make
amends for its Round 3 home loss to Bundoora. Last
week the Boro outlasted West Preston-Lakeside,
coming from seven points down at half-time to win
by 18. David Ellard and Tristan Stead were again
prominent, while Billy Bedford kicked four goals in a
breakout performance.
Montmorency’s finals hopes have taken a dip over
the past fortnight and its task gets no easier this week
when it hosts Heidelberg.
Montmorency was blown away early by Macleod in
Round 13 and faced a 37-point deficit at the main
break. Despite improved form in the second half, the
mountain was too big to climb, with Daniel Keenan
and Callum Daley named their side’s best in defeat. The
Magpies boast a strong record against Heidelberg and
have not lost to the Tigers at home since 2012.
Heidelberg was able to celebrate their 140th year gala
in style last Saturday night after earlier accounting for
Whittlesea. Dan Connors and youngster Lachlan Wilson
both booted four goals. With Sam Gilmore not far away
from a return, the 12-1 Tigers are tracking nicely ahead
of their return to finals action.
Macleod plays its second-successive home game
when it welcomes West Preston-Lakeside to De
Winton Park.
The Roos’ have impressed over the past fortnight,
scoring comfortable wins over Whittlesea and
Montmorency. Defenders Hayden Seivers and Brad
Leggett were adjudged their side’s best in last week’s
by Samuel Zito
win. Macleod has had troubles against West PrestonLakeside in recent times, most notably in Round 8,
when the Roosters snatched a one-point victory.
West Preston-Lakeside has won just once over the past
month and is at risk of falling a game and percentage
outside the top five if it can’t pull off a win in Round 14.
The Roosters pushed strongly against Greensborough,
before fading in the last. Shaun Gannon was fantastic
in his return, with support from David Rodan and Joel
McDonald.
Northcote Park will be looking to continue its strong
home form when it hosts Whittlesea at Bill Lawry
Oval.
The Cougars have surged back into finals contention
on the back of wins in three of their past four games.
Six goals from Koden Colman helped guide the
Cougars past Lower Plenty last week. The Cougars
booted 13 second-half goals, with their final score
of 20.16 (136) their highest tally since Round 15,
2014. Bronik Davies, Jordan Collopy and Jordan Perry
continued their good form.
Whittlesea will be looking to double the dose against
Northcote Park, after scoring its first win of the season
when the sides met in Round 9. Last week they were
no match for Heidelberg, despite impressing in
patches. Matthew Atta’s strong form continued, while
young defender Tom Falls again showed promising
signs.
The final game of the round sees Lower Plenty travel
to Eltham Central Park to take on Eltham.
Eltham’s inconsistency continued, unable to replicate
its Round 12 form in last week’s 43-point loss to
Bundoora. Gavan Connelly booted three goals, while
Eamon Gilbert was solid. It was a costly defeat for
last year’s preliminary finalists, who slipped to eighth
spot. But, given the evenness of the competition, the
Panthers are still very much in the finals race.
Lower Plenty’s effort certainly cannot be questioned,
with the Bears’ form much improved since the Queen’s
Birthday split round. However, turnovers continue to
hurt the young side, with their opposition often able
to score on the rebound. Sam and Ben Paterson have
been welcome additions to the senior side in recent
weeks.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
BUNDOORA
This week we welcome our old adversary
Greensborough to Yulong Reserve.
LAST WEEK: A sunny day at Yulong Reserve had us
all in an upbeat mood. Hopes were high we could turn
our disappointing loss to Northcote Park in to a positive
with a win against Eltham to get us back on track with
the finals fast approaching. Dammo Aujla joined our
senior team after some time away with the Northern
Blues and it was exciting to watch his talented ball skills
on the ground. Matty Dennis again showed his class
with another stellar game and with our confidence
returning even our trusted back man Ben “Dad” Shelton
kicked a beautiful goal from a tight angle. It was an
excellent and well needed win against Eltham. If only
we could bottle this confidence and take it with us to
each game it would be a wonderful thing.
TODAY: We will have the opportunity today to see if
our confidence is still with us, as Greensborough are
never going to lie down and die and give you four
points without a fight.
AROUND THE BULLRING: Adios Omigo. Trent Grant
GREENSBOROUGH
Today we head to Bundoora. A special thanks to all at
West Preston-Lakeside who put on a fantastic day last
week. Your hospitality was greatly appreciated!
SENIORS: Made it three-straight wins with an 18-point
win against West Preston. For a change, our kicking
at goal left a bit to be desired, having eight more
shots on goal, yet only winning by 18 points. Bill “The
Future” Bedford proved why he is the future of our club,
booting four goals in a breakout performance. Dave
Ellard was again superb, and was ably supported by
Tristan Stead and the long-sleeved Chris Clark. Dan
McLinden and Nick Riddle again led a stellar defensive
performance. Bundoora presents as a huge challenge, a
win will put us two games clear inside the top three.
RESERVES: Recorded a 58-point victory over archrival West Preston. The boys were in control at every
break, besides a lapse at the beginning of the last, led
by Josh Riddle who returned from injury. Marcus Allen
dominated the half back line taking several big grabs,
whilst Jason Tucker defended dourly. Jake Rowe returned
to form on the wing, providing the forwards with good

service and being linked in many forward movements. A
huge game today against second-placed Bundoora.
UNDER-19: The future stars got themselves back
on the winners list with a 68-point win. A lapse in the
second quarter saw the Roosters get back into the
contest, but our boys regained the ascendency to
finish the game off in style. Nick Ross turned it on with
four majors , as did Mick Irving. Tom Phelan and Mitch
Merkel chimed in with three each, and Tom BevanShannon put together another solid performance. Have
moved back inside the top three and take on second
placed Bundoora today.
SOCIAL NOTES: 5K day is Sunday August 7, enquire
about your ticket at the clubrooms! Our inaugural Hall of
Fame Dinner is on August 13 at Plenty Ranges Convention

RUMOUR OF THE WEEK: Which two Boro boys are
rumoured to be considering a move to West Preston
after a great day in the social rooms? The pair was
photographed with the Roosters’ president and heard
pleading their case for a potential move come trade
time.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
MACLEOD
We returned to De Winton Park and finished the day
with wins to the seniors and reserves and a narrow loss
in the under-19s.
SENIORS: Some late winter sunshine and drying
winds bode for a much better surface than our last
home game. We jumped out of the blocks early in the
piece and by half-time we held a six-goal lead. It was
nip and tuck in the second half and although Mont
threatened several times we held our nerve and in the
end a five-goal win was a solid result. Better players
came from the backline where Hayden Seivers repelled
many opposition forays and Brad Leggett stood tall
against bigger-bodied opponents. Scooter mopped
up as usual from the half-backline while Liam Brandt
was busy around the packs. Hopefully with the return
of some senior players soon from injury we can put our
best foot forward in the run home to the finals.
RESERVES: The reserves kept their finals chances alive
with a hard-fought eight-point win. Experienced hands
Mooka, Nannas, Simmo and Brad Pearce led the way.
WEST PRESTON - LAKESIDE
This week it’s Macleod which doesn’t get any easier
but with a spot in the top five still up for grabs the boys
have put a solid week on the track and will come out
firing.
LAST WEEK: Wasted opportunities early came
back to haunt us going down by 18 points against
Greensborough. The twos and under-19s were once
again in the games but failed to finish them off. Special
mention to the Slime for enjoying a sip during and
after, especially the boys off to Oktoberfest.
SOCIAL: Rooster Raffle –Thursday Nights Jackpot is
over a grand, drawn Thursday nights at 8.30pm; Major
Draw – Saturday August 6, senior players and the
committee all have tickets to sell.
NETBALL: Both had their colours lowered last week
but are sure to bounce back last night. The new seasons
for juniors are starting so catch up on the website for all
the details.
JUNIORS: The last round concludes tomorrow and as
usual they will have their knees up back at the club to
celebrate another year and to look forward to several
teams competing but also the first time that the club
18

UNDER-19: The under-19s were stiff to go down by
the barest margin to the top side.
$5000 DRAW: Tickets are now on sale for the $5000
draw at De Winton Park on August 13. Tickets are $50
each, see Peta Doherty.
VALE DEE McDONALD: The club extends its deepest
sympathy to Bruce and Judy McDonald following the
sudden death of their daughter Dee last week.
BUSINESS LUNCH: The business lunch featuring Mick
Molloy and Jake King next Friday is a sellout. Thanks to
everyone for supporting this event. Those who have
booked but have not paid please do so. Pay to BSB 633

will host final. A great effort and in particular to Darebin
Council for putting the work into keeping the ground in
great condition
WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: The club will field an open
age ladies team in next year’s NFL Women’s League.
Jon, Jodie and Abbie are on the lookout for coaches,
players and volunteers to follow on from the success of
junior girls teams over the past few years
GOLF CLUB: The lads jetted off to the world famous
Pebble Beach for a stable ford tournament. Dooga got
the chocolates but the upset came with Keys winning
the longest drive and beating his old man off the stick.
The next game is August 14. The golf season continues
over summer and new members are always welcome.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
MONTMORENCY
Today we host Heidelberg as we venture into the
business end of the season. We are currently hanging
onto fifth place by the skin of our teeth and the
run home will see each match take on increased
significance after consecutive defeats
SENIORS: We were blown out of the water early at
Macleod. Despite a strong lift in performance after
half time the bird had flown and we had to lower our
colours to the superior Macleod outfit – the only team
we have conceded 100 points to in game since Round
3. Today’s game represents a new challenge. There were
some very strong signs in the second half last Saturday
and the home team will be looking to pick up where
left off. Our recent starts have been a bit tardy and this
will undoubtedly be an area of focus. We have a terrific
recent record against the Tigers, especially at home, so
a strong performance is on the cards.
RESERVES: It was another close loss on the back of
a last quarter fadeout. Despite five goals from Nick
Guthrie and strong games from Xavier Cahill and Lewis
Franz, the Magpies came up eight points short after
HEIDELBERG
140 year photo at next week’s home game v Eltham.
NEXT WEEK: Next week we’ll be taking a 140-year
commemorative photo underneath the scoreboard
between the senior and reserves game. We want
everyone to turn up in Heidelberg colours and be a part
of an important commemorative photo.
ROUND 13 WRAP: Both sides were able to put solid
wining scores on the board against Whittlesea last week
in a strong outing. The senior side finished with a very
strong second half, running out comfortable winners.
Daniel Cookson took the mark of the day which he was
quite happy to point out was at the 19-minute mark of
the third quarter for anyone wanting to look at the replay.
The twos played their best four-quarter effort for the
season, running the game out very strongly. Good job.
ROUND 14 PREVIEW: Today we travel to Mont. This
has been a tough road trip in recent years with our last
win there in appalling wet and muddy conditions a
few years ago. The seniors are looking to make it two
in a row against Mont and the twos are looking to
20
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
holding a three quarter time lead.
UNDER-19: A sleep in today for the young Monty boys
today with the bye. Last Saturday saw the Magpies
record a very fortuitous victory. Against a very hungry
Kangaroos outfit the team in black and white fell over
the line by the barest possible margin. No doubt Darren
Kane will be hoping the week off will freshen up his
charges as we head into the pointy end.
CONGRATULATIONS: Well done to Ben Fennell on
being awarded the Best on Ground Medal last Sunday
for Vic Metro in the big clash against Vic Country at
Mernda. Ben and Jesse Donaldson were amongst
the strongest contributors for the Metro team. It was
the Country boys who got the chocolates 12.17.89
to 7.8.50. Congratulations to both Monty players on
carrying themselves with such distinction.
BUSINESS LUNCHEON: Friday August 5 at the
Clubrooms is our next event. The Lunch will feature two
of the games’ biggest names – Kevin Bartlett and David
Schwarz. For tickets contact Ian Stillman 0407 688 775.
consolidate at the upper end of the ladder. Should be
a beauty.
CELEBRATION BALL REVIEW: The 140 year ball was
a great night. The Lamb was to die for. The chicken was
pretty tasty as well. The photos of captains, coaches,
premiership players, life members, amongst others
proved to be a real highlight of the night. Fortunately
Desy was happy with his table and no one messed
around with the silent auction, keeping Bill’s blood
pressure in check. The dance floor got the usual
hammering. It is pleasing to report that Doogs didn’t
fall over or suffer any dance floor injuries.
SOCIAL EVENTS: Please make sure you check out our

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1
NORTHCOTE PARK
The boys return home this week to host Whittlesea.
SENIORS: A fast start had us three goals up within
the blink of an eye but turned sour by quarter time.
A win was essential to keep any hopes of finals alive
but despite turning a one-goal deficit into a one-point
lead in the second quarter, the seniors were less than
convincing against the bottom side. Our 22-point lead
wasn’t insurmountable, especially after trading goals
early in the last, the game was alive. Classy goals to
Bronik Davies and Jordan Collopy put us on the brink.
Mannon Jonhston teased the Northcote faithful, hitting
the post, but about a minute later Ash Close took a
mark and handballed to Koden Coleman who sealed
the game, running away 41-point winners. Jordan Perry
had the ball on a string and Bronik, Mannon and Koden
had great games.
RESERVES: After just a one point lead at quarter time,
it seemed our reserves were just beginning to kick away
in the second. Dominance of play and an unbelievable
Cam Taylor goal put the writing on the wall for a big
win. But a nine-point buffer turned into an eight-point
WHITTLESEA
On the road again this week as we travel to Bill Lawry
Oval to take on Northcote Park.
SENIORS: Perfect footy weather and a big test for
the team down at Warringal Park against Heidelberg.
While it was a hard fought contest the boys were on the
back foot for most of the day. Some great passages of
play were often followed by forced errors as a result of
opposition pressure. Positives from the game lie in the
resilience of our back line and the development of our
young players. Every game is an invaluable lesson on
what it takes to play Division 1 football and our young
players will benefit from this. Best Players: M. Atta, M.
Dornauf, T. Falls, R. Dyson, N. Pupillo, C. Horman.
RESERVES: While our determination and endeavour
was never lacking, opportunities down forward were
limited in the first half, amplified by some costly
turnovers. An anonymous crop dusting at half time
left a bad taste but the boys were determined to
make amends for the previous two quarters of footy.
They were told to take the game on at all costs which
resulted in some hard running off half back and
22
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
deficit at the last change. A few minutes into the
last, Robbie Chadwick got absolutely crunched in a
courageous marking contest which proved a turning
point. He got a 50m penalty and kicked a huge goal.
Squizzy’s sixth sealed the game with a few minutes to
go. Squizzy’s played his best game for the club, and
Trent Fallon, Mick Naldrett and Chaddy all stood out.
UNDER-19: You wouldn’t know we were one game
below Lower Plenty if you watched the poor first half
we dished up. Lower held us goalless and kicked 6.5
themselves in an insipid first half. Cam Simpson and
Liam Waldron had a crack with little support. After
Andre Botoulos put through our first, on the back of a
half time spray, we showed we were far from incapable
of being competitive. In fact, we dominated most of the
third quarter and kicked three goals but only won the
quarter by five points. An even last quarter saw Lower
run out comfortable winners. Simmo, Liam and Daniel
Brown all had good games.
SOCIAL: July 24 – 100-100s. Big money to be won, see

through the centre and this opened up the game. We
finished off well with a three goals last quarter. Another
win is just around the corner boys. Best Players: S.
Dempsey, M. Taplin, M. Brennan, C. Sloan, E. Gorski, P.
Higgins.
UNDER-19: Had the bye and will be looking to
claim their second win this week when they take on
Northcote Park.
NETBALL: Great effort by the girls to secure four wins
out of six games played on Friday night.
$5K DRAW: A nail-biting finish to the $5k Draw, where
there were more deals made than car city. Thanks to all
those who helped out on the night, most notably those
in the kitchen, bar staff and MC Tolly Jnr. After Saturday
night’s effort he has put his hand up to take Eddie
McGuire’s TV hosting roles – just stay away from those
pain killers mate.

DIVISION 2 – Preview
MINOR PREMIERSHIP UP FOR GRABS
The battle for first place has begun to heat up after
Hurstbridge suffered its second defeat in as many
weeks.
After starting the season with nine-straight wins, the
Bridges are now in a tussle with North Heidelberg for
the minor premiership, with the Bulldogs trailing the
Bridges by just a single game.
The Fitzroy Stars also sit on the same wins as North
Heidelberg – albeit with the Stars having played two
extra games, ahead of a bye this weekend.
Hurstbridge will look to put a poor fortnight behind
it when it hosts Thomastown at Ben Frilay Oval. The
Bridges will be happy to return to their home fortress
as both of their defeats have occurred while playing on
the road.
Last week a seven-goal to one opening quarter in
favour of the Fitzroy Stars nullified the Bridges hopes
of winning their tenth game of the season. The Bridges
fought the game out and kicked eight final-term goals,
but still fell 29 points short.
Chris Burton kicked six majors and John Kreuzer was
named as the Bridges’ best player but they could do
little to stop a rampant Stars side, led by 10 goals from
former Bridges forward Daniel Francis.
The ladder-leader faces a Thomastown side fresh off
a thrilling one-point victory over Panton Hill in Round
14. In a game that was evenly contested all the way
through, the Bears did enough to scrape through for
the win, thanks to five goals from Jacob Osei-Duro and
a brilliant display from Adrian Natoli.
The victory ended a two-game losing streak and kept
alive the Bears slim hopes of playing finals. If they are
going to aim for finals then they must win their four
remaining games and hope for a Diamond Creek form
slump.
Second-placed North Heidelberg will look to increase
pressure on Hurstbridge at the top of the ladder when
it hosts bottom-placed rival Lalor at Shelley Reserve.
Having lost just one game since Round 4, the
Bulldogs can now set their sights on top spot. They
again showed their premiership credentials with an
impressive 21-point victory over Diamond Creek –
their seventh win from their past eight games.
Following a seven-goal haul against Panton Hill, Shane
Harvey played further up the ground against the
Creekers and found plenty of the football.
With Harvey spending less time inside 50m, it was
by Christopher Chrysostomou
up to his teammates to carry the load in attack. Kyle
McDonald stood up when his team needed him,
booting three goals.
Pasquale Saccuzzo, Brody Tardio and Leigh Gilbert
were the outstanding players in the Bulldogs win,
where their side overcame a fast start by the Creekers
before gaining control in the second half.
Not much can be said except for 2016 being an utter
disappointment for the team from Lalor. However,
an upset win this week against their old rival would
provide a positive note on an otherwise forgettable
campaign.
Todd Hughes continues to give his all for the Bloods
and sits third on the goal kicking table with 44 goals.
Jarrod King and Shane Jacobs have also led from the
front, while youngster Jackson Freebairn has proven
himself to be a future leader of the Bloods.
The final game of the round sees Panton Hill play host
to Diamond Creek at Cracknell Reserve.
Last start, Panton Hill suffered a heartbreaking onepoint defeat to Thomastown in what was one of the
games of the year, with the margin never greater than
seven points at each break of play.
Tyler Scarce, Brendan O’Connor and Joffa Byron kicked
14 goals between them but could not do enough to
get the Redbacks over the line, as they slipped to sixth
place. The 19 goals the Redbacks kicked in the match
equalled their highest total for the season.
Diamond Creek lost pace on the top two following
their defeat to North Heidelberg last Saturday – the
club’s first home loss for the season.
After their win over Hurstbridge in Round 13, the
Creekers were confident of taking second spot from
the Bulldogs. They looked the goods early, racing to
a 19-point win midway through the first term, before
struggling to hit the scoreboard after quarter time.
Chris Moloney, Oliver Parks and Brad Perry were the
Creekers best players, while Rory Kavanagh presented
well up forward and finished with four goals. Only
Jack Prosser and Simon Buchanan managed goals
alongside Kavanagh.
The Creekers will be expecting to come away with
a win over Panton Hill and have the edge over the
Redbacks; winning the past four games these sides
have played.

DIVISION 2
PANTON HILL
Back at home this week to host Diamond Creek.
SENIORS: No doubt a disappointing result at
Thomastown but a very gallant effort from all
considering we were playing with just 20 fit players
for the majority of the game. It also looks like we now
know how to keep the scoreboard ticking over these
days so that means regular wins aren’t beyond us.
RESERVES: Returned a pretty poor result with the
backline under siege all game. Brad Sansom worked
hard and deserved to be noted in the best players.
UNDER-19: Were lucky enough to play on Friday night
at the Hill and put on a really good game against St
Mary’s. Our boys seemed to have just as much of the
footy as the well drilled Burra but we struggled hitting
our forward targets with the same efficiency. The night
game was very well supported by both Panton Hill and
St Mary’s members and was great to welcome many of
our visitors into the social rooms. Let’s play more Friday
nights!
JUNIORS: Our under-13s played at home last and
went down to Wallan. We’d certainly improved on our
DIAMOND CREEK
Congratulations to Chris Moloney on his 150th senior
game for the club this week against Panton Hill.
SENIORS: Let’s get back on the winners list! We went
down to North Heidelberg by 21 points. Although we
played patches of good footy we weren’t able to string
it together for long enough to get the points. If there’s
any positives to take from the loss, it’s that we only lost
by 21 points despite never playing our best footy. If we
bring our best for four quarters, we can match it with
anyone.
RESERVES: The reserves beat North Heidelberg by
42 points. After a tight first half we kicked away in the
third quarter with six goals to none. The last quarter
was fairly scrappy with a couple of goals each. A good
win against a fellow top four side with still plenty of
improvement left in the boys. We look forward to
Panton Hill this weekend.
UNDER-19: The under-19s had a strong win against
an undermanned North Heidelberg team with a clinical
display of team footy, winning by a huge 160 points.

last encounter with them. Congratulations to Khody
Thomas on playing his 50th game. Under-11s were
away to Lalor but unfortunately too couldn’t take the
points. This week is the final round of the season for our
juniors so it’d be great to have lots of support for our
little Redbacks. All those senior, reserves and under-19s
should return the support your water carriers give you
during your games. Both teams play Kinglake but 11s
are at home and the 13s are away. Check the website or
Facebook for updates!
SOCIAL: Panton Hill Ladies Day is on July 30. Our major
raffle draw is fast approaching so get your tickets sold
and returned to Greg Mason and collect some more to
sell! Look out for the $5000 Draw on August 7 – tickets
are $50 includes all food. There are still some players
not up to date with their registration fees and club gear.
See Chris Cahir to finalise your account. Wouldn’t want
to get your mug on a wanted poster would you?
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: If at first you don’t
succeed, then skydiving is surely not for you.
The boys kicked plenty of behinds so could have been
an even bigger margin but a great result anyway. Well
done to Cam Dowse with 10 goals.
NETBALL: A not so great weekend on the netball front
with the Div 1 team having a bye and the other three
teams suffering losses. We will be back better this week!
Go Creekers!
LADIES NIGHT: This Saturday July 23 is the next
player’s function with Ladies Night. It is always a good
night so get along! Tickets available at the door.
SPONSORS DAY: Saturday July 30 is our second
Sponsors Day for the game against Lalor. Details: Steve
Sampson 0418 212 154.
PRESIDENTS LUNCH: Saturday August 13 is the
Presidents Lunch starting at 12 noon with Dane Swan
as our special guest speaker. Tickets are $50 per head
and are available, so get them now. The lunch will be
followed by our next big game against Hurstbridge.
MAJOR SPONSORS: The club thanks our major
sponsors for the 2016 season – Caelli and Nillumbik
Cellars.

DIVISION 2
HURSTBRIDGE
Today we welcome Thomastown players, committee
and supporters to Ben Frilay Oval. Let’s us all get around
our boys and each other.
SENIORS: After a slow start we had to play catch up
football against the Fitzroy Stars. Six goals down at
quarter time isn’t an ideal start. To get back into the game
we had to take more risks than normal, which provided
Fitzroy Stars a lot of space and time when the ball was
turned over. To our boys’ credit we fought the game out
and kicked eight goals in the last quarter. Today is a new
day. Learn from the past and move forward.
RESERVES: Last week we were lucky to come away
26-point winners. Four quarters boys! We have spoken
about it before. Our attitude and effort need to change.
Great to see Donnas, Zac, Bryce and Mitchy Lucas
stepping up. We have Thomastown today in another
top of the table clash. Run out proudly in your jumper,
support each other and back your team mates.
UNDER-19: We headed to away to Kilmore needing
a win to stay in touch with the top four. We were up
THOMASTOWN
The boys are off to Ben Frilay Oval this week to take on
Hurstbridge.
SENIORS: We came into the game against Panton Hill
knowing that our best would be good enough to get
the result. In an entertaining and see sawing battle we
came away with the narrowest of victories. Mistakes
were made and our kicking at goal was a definite let
down but we secured the four points and got to belt
out the song. Great effort by all concerned.
RESERVES: On the back of a poor showing against
Fitzroy Stars we needed to respond. Pleasingly we put
together an emphatic four-quarter effort to run away
easy victors against Panton Hill. Now another test
awaits in the form of Hurstbridge, with a lot at stake
for the winner. Hopefully the lessons learnt from our
Fitzroy game are still ringing in the ears and we need to
ensure we are on top of our game come Saturday.
OKTOBERFEST: Our next function is the Oktoberfest
which will be at the clubrooms this Saturday the 23rd of
July. German beer and finger food provided and fancy
dress is strongly encouraged. Doors open at 7pm and

against it with 18 players and some like Max Gunn were
injured. In wet conditions there were a lot of turnovers
and goals seemed hard to come by. It was a hard fought
first half and we went in seven points down. Early in the
third ruckman Mitchy Reynolds was on fire, but he came
down with a knee injury which left us with 17. The boys
pulled together and found something extra. To the last
second they gave everything they had. We went done by
seven points but every player can hold their head high.

DEAN SINCLAIR’S DATING TIPS: We all know Dean
is an avid sports follower but what we didn’t know
is that he loves his fishing. He uses that expertise in
relation to this week’s piece of advice: “We all know that
there are plenty of fish in the sea, but don’t wait too
long to hit the dating scene. Wait too long and you will
simply be left holding the rod.”

DIVISION 2
NORTH HEIDELBERG
Finally we return home being the first game on our
deck that seems like an eternity against Lalor today.
TODAY: It should be a good game of footy. To all
Bloods supporters please enjoy our hospitality and you
are most welcome to join us for a few refreshments
post game.
SENIORS: Diamond Creek started well however by
end of first term we had clawed our way back. Had
the best of general play however we were not nailing
our chances until the third stanza where we broke the
game open. Top win against good opposition on their
turf with plenty contributing. Let’s not relax against our
old foes this week. Best: B. Tardio, L. Gilbert, P. Saccuzzo,
G. Assi, K. McDonald and R. Docherty.
RESERVES: Wasn’t the result we hoped after some
good form recently. That third quarter where we lose
our way returned and we paid the price. Let’s get back
on the winners list this week. Best: P. King, B. Sabin and
L. Bentley.
UNDER-19: Tough day at the office for the boys
LALOR
The boys return from the bye this weekend to take on
North Heidelberg.
SENIORS: We are not going to win too many games
when we don’t kick a goal in two of the four quarters.
Against Panton Hill a fortnight ago, we made some
mistakes and they made us pay. Goal Kickers: T. Hughes
3, J. Baddeley-Kelly 2, S. Dowell, K. Digney; Best Players:
J. Langborne, J. King, J. Freebairn, K. Toronis, N. Watts,
J. Dowell
RESERVES: The reserves recorded a great win with
the coach excelling and turning back the clock with a
lazy six goals. Goal Kickers: B. Wheatley 6, R. McDonald,
F. Monardo, D. Polidano; Best Players: B. Wheatley, T.
Keily, C. Smith, J. Dang, D. Polidano, A. Vinar.
AROUND THE TRAPS: A couple of blokes who should
know better have made a pact. “We will never go to
the Abruzzi Club again.” I think that pact was broken
two hours later. We must give the girls on the gate a
mention. They are so mean they won’t let the wind
through without paying. And the quote of the week:
“I paid nothing for my kid to go to school. Now I am

against a very good Diamond Creek side however stick
at it lads as wins are possible between now and season
end. Best R. Bonello, M. Harvey and S. Lennen.

finals time so keep up the good work girls. If any our
members can get to a game the girls would appreciate
your support

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 - Preview
CHALLENGERS HAVE EPPING IN THEIR SIGHTS
Wins by teams placed two to five on the ladder
tightened up the race for the finals in Round 14 of
Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3.
Epping had a chance to go two games clear atop the
ladder with a tenth-straight win, but was no match
for Mernda at Epping Recreation Reserve, losing by 29
points.
Mernda now shares top spot with the Blues on 11 wins
but trails Epping by 17 percent. Watsonia sits third
on ten wins, with St Mary’s on nine wins and South
Morang on eight.
Watsonia kept the double chance within their sights
with a percentage-boosting win against Kilmore at J.J.
Clancy Reserve.
The Saints led by 26 points at the main break but put
the foot down thereafter to win by 101-points. They
boasted a staggering eight multiple goal-kickers –
led by Jack Larkin with four. Brandon Austin was a
standout for the Blues.
“Kilmore fought hard and took the game on,” Watsonia
coach Corey McCall said. “It was good to get that
win and now we look forward to the next two weeks
against the top two teams.”
Heidelberg West led close to quarter time at
Heidelberg Park, but a goal on the siren by St Mary’s
recruit Toby O’Meara gave his team a slender lead.
From there, St Mary’s broke the game open with 12
goals to two in the second and third terms.
The Hawks were better in the final stanza, but St Mary’s
ran out convincing 84-point winners. O’Meara finished
with a bag of seven and fellow tall forward Daniel
Dober snagged four.
“We will keep positive – knowing what we can bring to
the top sides,” Heidelberg West coach Grant Toms said.
“It was good to get a win as we aim to end the year
with five out of five,” St Mary’s coach Con Borg said.
“We now look forward to the challenge against
Banyule next week.”
South Morang scored an easy 47-point win against
Banyule at Mill Park Lakes Reserve to keep in touch
with the top four. The experienced duo of Paul Harrison
– with seven goals – and Luke Shelton were key
contributors for the Lions.
THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
by Doug Long
Despite winning the final term, it was a bad day for the
Bears. They were not able to stay with their opponents
when the heat was on, and Luke Giles limped off late in
the game with a leg injury.
Fifth-placed South Morang can continue its push for
finals in Round 15 action when it becomes the last
team to head north to play Kilmore.
The Lions will be hot favourites for this one and, while
the four points will be vitally important, a percentage
boost would also come in handy.
The Blues would love to cause a big upset in order to
gain a game break on Heidelberg West at the bottom
of the table.
St Mary’s – inside the top four by a game – hosts
Banyule at Whatmough Park. The Burra will be highly
favoured in this contest. They could climb as high as
third – depending on other results.
The Burra will also have one eye on the Round 16
clash with South Morang. Given that the results go as
expected this weekend, the winner in Round 16 will be
inside the top four and the loser in fifth.
But the Lions have the harder run home, with two
games against premiership hopefuls to finish off the
season after the clash against the Burra.
Epping will be looking to get back on the winners’ list
immediately when it travels to Heidelberg Park to play
Heidelberg West.
Knowing that a loss could see them lose top spot, the
Blues will be expected to bounce back from last week’s
disappointment in a top versus bottom encounter.
Match of the day status belongs to the tussle between
Mernda and Watsonia at A.K. Lines Reserve.
The Saints sit one game behind the Demons, but with
a superior percentage. So the likely prize for the winner
will be the coveted second spot on the ladder.
Tipsters will struggle to separate these two teams, but
may be tempted to go for the Saints due to the home
ground advantage.
While a win by the Saints could set up a great threeway contest for the double chance, a Demons win
would put them two games clear of Watsonia with
three games to play.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3
HEIDELBERG WEST
Today we welcome top of the table Epping to
Heidelberg Park.
SENIORS: After a promising start, kicking three of the
first four goals, we were not able to go with St Mary’s
last week, who outworked us across the board. We face
a big challenge against Epping who gave us a giant
hiding earlier in the season. We have improved greatly
since then and we will embrace the challenge and
measure how much we have improved. Best players last
week were Nahas, Jules, Brad and Amon.
RESERVES: We were depleted this week due to
injuries and unavailabilities and we came up against a
super professional reserves outfit. Nonetheless the boys
he a crack and took it right up to the opposition during
the second and fourth quarters. Ryan Offer continues
his great season down back and was BOG. Andy G, Jack
Fulgrabe and Dougie all tried hard.
NETBALL: The momentum hit a wall last week
suffering our first loss in quite a while. The girls are still
on top of the ladder and will be looking to bounce back
EPPING
After two good wins to the reserves and under-19s, the
seniors fell short of recording their tenth-straight win.
We refocus and turn our attention to Heidelberg West
today.
SENIORS: A great day for footy last Saturday however
we did not put our best foot forward. Mernda were too
good on the day, showing plenty of pace and skill as
well as toughness. We have done very well up to date
and there is no reason if we stick to our guns that won’t
continue.
RESERVES: After a disappointing loss to St Mary’s the
week prior we drilled into the boys that we must get
back to playing hard team footy. To the boys’ credit
we came out on fire, kicking 12 goals to two in the
first half. To the delight of Leigh and myself the boys
kept their foot on the gas, running out 100+ point
winners. A few special mentions, firstly to young Mason
who after kicking his second goal told the boys he
“was putting on a show!” and to Choc for his amazing
run down tackle. There were a few falcons that need
mentioning, mainly to Watto. Maybe you should try out
for the soccer team, champ! The funniest falcon of the

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3
KILMORE
This week we move on to South Morang at home and
hope to continue to improve on the things we need to
and put together a solid four-quarter effort.
SENIORS: We hosted Watsonia and went into the
game a little undermanned and with 5 under-19s in
the side. It was great to give our kids an opportunity
to play some senior football. At half time we trailed
by four goals and felt we were doing the right things.
Our turnovers probably hurt us a bit in the first half.
The second half was a different story, we seemed to
stop doing the things that kept us in it in the first half.
That will get better with experience and fitness leading
into next year. Brandon Austin made the step up to
senior football look easy, giving us plenty of run and
carry from the wing. Pete de Sousa and Tommy Snaith
worked hard in defence all day, while Nick Sheldon and
Marcus Webb fought hard all day in the midfield.
RESERVES: We are very proud of the effort the boys
put in last week. Losing by 10 points to Watsonia,
they fought hard all game and put in a massive effort.
SOUTH MORANG
This week all three sides are on the road to take on
Kilmore.
LAST WEEK: Two out of three ain’t bad, but three was
what we are after. The seniors were on song from the
outset against Banyule and it proved the sort of play
we can produce. The reserves kept their dominate form
going and really showed last year’s premiers how far
away they are this year. The under-19s were outclassed
by a very strong Banyule side and we will need to
regroup very quickly.
THIS WEEK: The seniors must must win today against
Kilmore and win extremely well to keep our destiny in
our own hands. As for the reserves, there is not much
we can say except keep to Gary’s structures and the
rest will take care of itself. This is a danger game for
the under-19 boys that cannot be lost. Play to our
standards and structures and we win. If we don’t, well
who knows?
TRIVIA NIGHT: The annual trivia night is on tonight
at Lalor Stars. If anybody wants a late ticket see Leah as
soon as possible.

THE NORTHERNER — The Northern Football League Record
Looking forward to the future for this team.
UNDER-19: Last week was a big challenge as we had
a number of players out. All I asked of the boys was to
not give up at all until the end. Both sides had a fair
crack in the first quarter with nothing separating them.
The second quarter was another tough one but we
were still in the game, with the whole team playing
really good football. The third and fourth quarters came
down to which side wanted it most, and our boys didn’t
take a backward step. They were the team that held
strong and recorded a very well earned win.
NETBALL: We had 3 out of 4 wins this week. Big credit
to Kilmore 4 who had a massive win over Thomastown.
Kilmore 3 beat the top of the ladder Heidelberg West by
14 goals. Kilmore 1 finally put another win on the board
securing there spot at number 1 on the ladder. Bad luck
to our Kilmore 2 who had to take the court with six. We
worked hard all game but couldn’t come out with a win.
SOCIAL: Man ‘O’ Man is July 23. $10 per ticket. Please
contact Elise Woolfe.
5K DRAW: The 5K draw is after the Epping game on
the 5th of August at the club. Tickets are $75 per head
and include a drinks and meal package and entry to
the draw. Please see Jason and Brendan for tickets.
Players please note this is a compulsory function and
all open age and under-19players are expected to be in
attendance.

ST MARY’S
Banyule at home with this year’s Colts as guests is the
perfect setting to show the Senior club off at its best.
Let’s make it a great day.
FOOTBALL: The under-19s kicked off the weekend
with a Friday night game at Panton Hill under lights.
Great hospitality from the hosts combined with an
87-point win made it a successful night. Luke Awad
and Josh Jarman named best with Ricky Wait and Jesse
McKinnon both slotting four. Jesse’s tally takes him to
57 for the season and an eight-goal lead. Again, thanks
to Panton Hill for a terrific night and we’d welcome the
chance to do it again. The ressies continued on their
winning way with a 102-point victory over Heidelberg
West. Jimmy Girolami and Jarrod Millett registered four
each. Brad Gedge and Winchy, first two in the best. The
seniors did what was required after a tough couple of
weeks and after a slow start against a hard working
West side, came home 84-point winners. Bunks named
best and Dobes with four goals named second. Toby
was a strong target up forward getting seven majors.
NETBALL: Mixed results on Friday night with finals not

far away for the Burra girls. The third team went down
to a strong South Morang outfit, losing 32-17. The twos
girls had a tight 21-18 victory against Greensborough
and will need to keep winning and have a fair bit of luck
to make the four. The first girls played what potentially
could be a grand final preview. Whittlesea prevailed by
6 goals, 27-21, which sees Whittlesea on top and the
Burra second.

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3
WATSONIA
Last week took us up the highway to Kilmore. In
perfect conditions we managed to get the two wins.
Bigger challenges await today as we seek redemption
against Mernda.
SENIORS: The boys started well against a plucky
Kilmore side, kicking away to a handy lead. In a great
fightback Kilmore were able to string a few goals
together to come back at us. After a rev up at half time,
the boys out the foot down. Larkin, Jezza and Harry
were lively up forward, while major highlights of the
day were Pera being the victim of a hanger and Crawf
screaming like a Banshee.
RESERVES: Well, that was close! Almost became part
of a historic day for the Kilmore Football Club, who
came out well structured and ready to play. They were
hungrier, more disciplined and worked for each other
significantly better than we did, and for the first three
quarters we paid for it. The message at three-quarter
time was to use our strengths, which were our running
MERNDA
Wins like Saturday’s senior games are the reason you
go to this football club.
SENIORS: That’s the way you do it boys. It was a good
patch of footy, probably not our best football overall
given we were outpointed at stages, but we now know
our best football is good enough to topple anyone
on our day. The boys played for the jumper; Micka,
who sadly lost his grandmother during the week; as
well as for each other. It was great to see Lezzy and
Braddy return to their old stomping grounds and play
great games and it was great that all 22 contributed
in different ways. Everything clicked, but we have to
do it again consistently, starting with today against
Watsonia.
RESERVES: Reesy was filthy about the effort. That’s all
you need to know.
UNDER-19s: Disappointing given what was at stake.
Epping outplayed us throughout the morning and were
much too strong. We had some reasonable performers
– Blacky played well, Dutty and Seb were good too
and Lucas played alright, but across the board we just
didn’t have enough. Next week against Hurstbridge

ability (and Simmo) to work Kilmore over. That came
to fruition and we enjoyed a tightly fought win. Need
to be on today against a team we feel we owe a better
showing to!
$2000 DRAW: Great turn last weekend. Well done to
Fiddler for winning the cash, anyone know how much
the young man put back over the bar, as per etiquette?
Was great to see future Tubbin Hall of Famers Az and
Buzz join Crawf and Ocean for a steam, still a while off
robe status, but it’ll come. Speaking of robe status we
measured Lizard up for one last week and we’ll have it
emblazoned with his name for day one of pre season.
As usual one has to choose a best on and it MUST go
to Levi for an inspired version of Backstreets Back.
Although Crawf’s conduction of The Gambler as last
drinks were called at Bar 8 runs a close second.
GO WATS!
represents a huge game in terms of our finals chances.
NETBALL: Couple of things – 1) I am a man of my
word – and I promised I’d make my way over again,
and 2) I did this keeping in mind that when I went
over last year, we knocked off the top side on their
home patch the next day. Guess what happened last
weekend? Anyway, Mernda 1 was terrific, keeping
Whittlesea at arms’ length throughout the entire game,
meaning we’ve secured a spot in the finals. It was a
different story for Mernda 2, who had a crack against
West Ivanhoe, particularly in the first quarter, but was
overpowered thereafter. Mernda 3 had a real crack
against Fitzroy Stars but was just unable to get that
extra goal, but split the points.
TODAY: Huge game. You can’t underestimate the
importance of this game. It’s a game where – if we
win, we can almost secure a spot in the top two and
we know how important a spot in the top two is come
finals time. Watsonia are up and about – they’ve flown
under the radar, they’ve won seven of their last eight
and we can’t afford to drop this one.
GO DEES!

JUNIOR Review - Round 13
A look back at the weekend’s junior results as teams
took to the field for Round 13 of the 2016 Northern
Football League junior season.
Epping booked its place in the Under-18 Girls finals
series with a 28-point win over Greensborough at
Anthony Beale Reserve. Talia Vincent booted six goals
for the Blues, while Lauren Hughes was named best
in the victory. Darebin sealed the minor premiership
with a home win over Hurstbridge, with Karly McNiece
named the Falcons best player. Finals-bound sides
South Morang and Montmorency also netted Round
13 wins.
It was a close week in the Under-17 competition, with
four of the five games decided by margins of fourgoals or less. Diamond Creek jumped into fourth place
with a nine-point win over ladder-leader Wallan, with
Nicholas Miles playing a strong game. Greensborough
jumped into second place following a strong home
win over Whittlesea, while Research slipped to third
after going down to a 22-point loss at Eltham. Mill
Park won its fourth game of the year, defeating Epping
away from home, while Montmorency remains a finals
chance after recording a four-goal home win over
Yarrambat.
Montmorency moved a step closer to a first-place
finish in Under-16 Blue, following a big home win
over third-placed Laurimar Black. Rory McGougan and
Braedyn Gillard both booted four goals. Eltham booked
its place in the finals with a 26-point away win over
Greensborough, booting nine goals to three after halftime. South Morang locked in a top-two finish with a
big win over Mill Park, while West Preston-Lakeside
scored a win at Wallan.
Research climbed to second place on the Under-16
Red ladder after eclipsing Hurstbridge by 13 points
at Ben Frilay Oval. The Searchers led by 27 points at
three-quarter time and were able to hold on for their
seventh win of the season, despite managing just
two behinds in the final quarter. Whittlesea scored a
massive home win to assure itself first place on the
ladder, while Eltham claimed its fifth win after scoring
a 38-point win over Wallan at Redleap Reserve. The
Panthers set the victory up with a five-goal to zero
third quarter.

The battle for second place on the Under-16 Girls
ladder will go down this weekend’s final round of the
home and away season, after both Greensborough
and Yarrambat scored Round 13 wins by comfortable
margins. The Boro currently hold onto second spot
with a superior percentage. Diamond Creek Women’s
maintained its perfect season with a big win on the
road over Eltham at Susan Street Reserve. Research
scored an upset win over Laurimar, with Meghan
Stagoll named the Searchers’ best in the eight-point
triumph at Laurimar Reserve. As a result of the Power’s
loss, Montmorency jumped into fourth spot on the
ladder after downing Wallan in the battle of the
Magpies.
Two thrillers headlined the action in the Under-15
Blue competition. Montmorency remains a top-two
chance after downing second-placed Greensborough
by four points at Anthony Beale Reserve. The Magpies
led by 25-points at three-quarter time and withstood
a final-quarter comeback by the Boro to notch their
seventh win of the year. Anthony Mcevoy was named
the Magpies best player. Eltham won its second game
of the season, upsetting West Preston-Lakeside by
two points at J.E. Moore Park. The Panthers made their
move in the second half, booting four goals to one,
after trailing by 17 points at half time. Meanwhile,
South Morang scored its 11th win in succession after
downing Mill Park.
Yarrambat moved within one win of second spot in
Under-15 Red after claiming a 25-point win over
Epping at Yarrambat War Memorial Park. The Blues
slipped from third to fifth, following Wallan’s 17-point
win over second-placed Research at Research Park. The
Magpies ran away with the game, booting 3.4 to zero
in the last quarter. Iziah Mahinay booted four goals
in the win. Northcote won its first game of the year,
downing Whittlesea by 19 points at McDonnell Park,
while Diamond Creek improved its record to 13-0 after
proving too good for South Morang.
Good luck to all teams in their final home and away
matches this week. To those not competing in the
finals, we hope your final game of the season is a great
one and we look forward to seeing you out on the field
again in 2017.
