Fuel Performance Catalyst Guest speaker, Greg Gormick, Contributing Editor, Railway Age spoke about “The Rail Advantage: Taking the Message to the Street.” Following is a précis of his address. “In short, our railways and rail transit systems are doing well in virtually every area except one: communications. It’s my personal belief that, with few exceptions, the industry is doing a poor job. My friend and colleague, Paul Thurston, now retired from CP after a career of more than 30 years, feels the decline of rail communications occurred when freight and passenger were separated in the late 1970s. There are three key audiences who need to hear your message: public, media, government. Politicians respond chiefly on the basis of votes; they tend to not show interest in anything that doesn’t connect to voters. Voters get much of their information from the media. And there’s your formula: connect with the public through the media to get political approval. It means you have to be equally good at public, media and government relations. Although I disagreed with much of what Paul Tellier did during his presidency of CN, there was one thing in which I was in complete agreement. Shortly after he took the helm, I interviewed him for Railway Age. He told me that, as a newcomer to the industry, he was shocked at how backward the railways were in their public, media and government relations. He said, “This shall change at CN” – and it did. The result was that CN thrust itself into the public eye through advertising, public events and speeches by its executives. In the late 1960s, CP produced a series of imaginative television commercials that highlighted various aspects of the company’s activities. It questioned the old phrase, “If you build the better mousetrap, the world will beat a pathway to your door.” The CP commercial made the point that you had to do more than just build the better mousetrap – you had to build your own pathway. The time has come to build that pathway by telling the public, the media and the politicians just what you have to offer. • Trusted because it works! • Serving the railroad industry world-wide for 15 years. • Save fuel, reduce exhaust emissions, extend engine life. Guest speaker, Mary Proc, Vice-President, Customer Services, GO Transit talked about the new customer service focus at GO. Using a Powerpoint presentation, Mary began with some numbers on GO’s current ridership, 55 million passengers per year. The transit system’s goal, she said, was to triple the number of passengers by the year 2020. GO’s aim was to be the preferred choice for inter-regional travel. It currently drives 85 per cent of its revenue from the farebox, she said. Mary described GO Transit’s new customer service focus with improved communications at stations and customer service representatives on most trains. Making an analogy with Westjet Airlines which she described as an organization that cares about its customers, she said GO plans to be a leader in customer service. One of the ways they would do this would be by surveying GO customers annually instead of every five years to get feedback. Improvements to service and on-time performance were largely dependant on reducing traffic bottlenecks on rail lines and GO, she said, was continuing to work closely with the freight railways to eliminate conflicts in train movements. She also spoke about service improvements such as increased capacity with longer trains and longer platforms at many of the GO stations. 6 Toll-free 800-346-5109 Website: www.fpc1.com Email: [email protected] Email: [email protected] NYAB KNORR BRAKE L I M I T E D A Knorr Brake Company Serving your braking requirements KNORR BRAKE LIMITED 675 Development Dr. Kingston, ON K7M 4W6 Phone: (613) 389-4660 Fax: (613) 389-8770 NEW YORK AIR BRAKE 748 Starbuck Ave., Watertown, N.Y. 13601 Phone: 1-888-836-6922 Fax: (315) 786-5675 This ad space available for only $125 per year (three issues plus GST).
