Kindy Blue STEAM Project 2015 – One Zany Device
Right now there are five videos embedded in the 11 splodges of the artwork on level two of
the IGS Reg St Leon building (Kelly St).
They explain how Kindy Blue discovered and explained force and motion at the end of 2015.
Use the LAYAR app on your smart device to reveal the wonderful experiments and design
developments that led to the creation of the giant artwork. It was very exciting to share
their work with parents using Augmented Reality technology (AR). Parents shared the digital
image of the artwork with their families and friends, who also accessed the embedded
information via AR. This is how the IGS global network continues to expand.
Well done Ms Slater, Ms Silk and Chelsea Maher and of course, Kindy Blue class of 2015!
Watch the youtube video, (search IGS Kindy Blue Steam) to see Kindy Blue share their
scientific discoveries with their parents.

CREATIVE INTERNSHIPS
Summer creative internships really sizzle
for my portfolio. Seeing the logos that I
created on Photoshop being printed out
and bound made me very proud and
surprised of what I was able to do in the
one week I was working at HOW.”
The Creative Internships program had
a successful launch during the 2015/16
summer holidays. We are very thankful
for the the support of several IGS parents
who dedicated time and effort to host
internship students into their places of
work. As a result, seven students were sent
off on a variety of unique work experience
opportunities.
Year 11 students Rachel Tsang and Luca
Ward experienced working first hand with
IGS parent and photographer Max Doyle.
The students were on set for several photo
shoots. Rachel said she enjoyed learning
about studio lighting and how light can
provide dramatic affect to a portrait. Luca
explained that he was nervous before his
first day about being the
youngest worker at the shoot.
However, he pointed out
that he was quickly surprised
because Max and other
people on set were welcoming
and actively taught him about
the processes involved in a
photo shoot. Luca reflected
that he valued being trusted
with being responsible for
aspects of the shoot and
learned so much from these
opportunities. Both Rachel and
Luca are currently studying Visual Arts and
look forward to using their new knowledge
of photography in their artwork.
Allie Weichert in Year 12 was given the
opportunity to work in the Graphics
Department for the Sydney Morning Herald
by parent Darren Goodsir. She enjoyed
her internship experience, as she met a lot
of people and got great exposure to the
creative process. Allie said that the graphics
team were really enthusiastic, they asked
to see the artwork in her process diary and
Term 1, No. 5 - 26 February 2016
gave her lots of positive feedback. She
exclaimed that before this experience
she never would have considered that
she could use her love of drawing in a
career, but now she would definitely be
interested in a career in graphics and
illustration.
Year 12 student Kip O’Rourke and Year
11 Student Harry McTavish were given
a unique opportunity to work at an
architecture firm during the summer
by parent and principle architect Jon
Johanssen of Architects Johannsen
+ Associates. Both Kip and Harry
explained that they really appreciated
their exposure to a creative office
environment. They
enjoyed working
on designs using
digital programs
and said that
the staff were
really welcoming
and even took
them out to
lunch on their
last day. Kip and
Harry both said
that after this
internship they
would really
like to pursue learning more about
architecture and the design process.
Year 12 Visual Arts and Design and
Technology student Adelee Thompson took
part in an internship at JMD design under
the guidance of IGS parent and Director
Anton James. During her internship
she participated in meetings, research,
design process and using Photoshop. She
explained that, “I really enjoyed going
to the sites and seeing the designs being
built. I found the whole experience really
interesting and informative. I never really
thought of Landscape Architecture as a
career path for the future but through
this internship program, I am definitely
considering it.” Adelee is currently using
ideas and tools that she learned about
on the internship in her Design and
Technology Major Work.
We are looking forward to growing this
program during the 2016 school year to
enhance the learning and experiences of
our students.
If you are interested in participating or
would like more information please email:
Victoria Califano the Supervising Teacher
of Creative Internships
([email protected]).
Fred Du Rietz in Year 12 completed
his internship at HOW Graphic
Design under the guidance of parent
Jon Howe. He was immersed in the
design process for a client and was
able to participate in researching,
sketching ideas and using Photoshop
to develop a logo. Fred explained,
“the most rewarding part of the
experience would definitely have to
be the final product that I printed
