Gallery KMB3 – HSC Art and Design
Last night’s HSC Art and Design Showcase drew a huge
crowd to KMB3 as the space was transformed into a gallery
of wonderful paintings, drawings, objets, film, technological
inventions and costume. Highlights included a bar table made
from three types of wood and a blue phosophorous finish; a
bike carry bag; a feathered sculpture, delicate drawings and
bold paintings including the painting, at right, when life really
did imitate art.

These Commerce teams really mean business
Last Friday, Commerce students pitched their business ideas to an expert panel as part of
Young Enterprise. Young Enterprise is the Commerce project that encourages students’
entrepreneurial abilities by guiding them through the process of running a business from
concept to customer. Students formed groups, prepared a business plan and pitched their
ideas for feedback, mentorship and finance.
A little bit like the television show, The Shark Tank!
There were some excellent pitches from LLS Publishing, Koolbab, Jake’s Bakes, Brownies for
your Frownies, Iced Tea Co and many other enterprises.
Special thanks to expert panelists Kaye Morehan, Tony Pearson, Suzanne Tucker, James Chin
Moody and David Hamper as well as the many teachers that helped support this initiative.
The next step will be a Young Enterprise Day next term.

UTS FEST
UTS watches UTS watches IGS!
UTS Multimedia Journalism student
Tallulah Thompson filmed part of
IGS’s ‘Green Houses’ project last
week as part of her course work on
education in the classroom. And,
the visiting experts just happened
to be Architecture students from
UTS and the well-known architect
Anthony Burke! All in all, IGS was
happy to set the scene for a UTS
Fest!

MUSIC NOTES
Music expertise crosses to the Land of the Long White Cloud
IGS’s Director of Music Alison Housley was invited to Auckland recently for
four days as chief adjudicator at the NZ KBB Music Festival. Alison writes…
The KBB Festival, in its 33rd year, is for high school Symphony and Chamber
Orchestras, and Concert and Jazz Bands. It is the largest event of its kind in
New Zealand.
I was privileged to listen to 50 concert bands in the magnificent venue of
the Holy Trinity Cathedral, and gave constructive feedback to each group
on their technique, accuracy, musicianship, presentation and ensemble
skills. It was inspirational to be part of an event that provided for an
exchange of ideas through the performance of a wide range of repertoire.
Even more, it was extremely heartening to witness the personal dedication
of students and their teachers, and the capability of music to inspire
passion, curiosity and deep listening. This of course, aligns perfectly with
the goals of our young IGS musicians who consistently strive for excellence
through performance and rehearsal in our own ensemble program.
On the last evening of the event, I had the wonderful experience of
working with the Honours Concert Band – 80 selected students of
extremely high calibre from across many bands. I rehearsed the ensemble
for three hours culminating in a packed-out public concert.
Music is indeed a vehicle that equips us to go into the world, to embrace,
experience and digest the work of others, while enabling us to make
valuable connections.
“The only way to change the world is to make a little noise.”

Ross Gittins reports on the economy at IGS
Highly respected senior Economics journalist for
the Sydney Morning Herald Ross Gittins shared
his views on the state of play in Australia – and
globally – with IGS’s senior Economics classes
on Monday in the David Baker Learning Centre.
Ross discussed everything from the national
impact of the unemployment rate in Australia
to Brexit and the global impact of markets in
China and the US. However, there were many
silver linings including Australia’s relatively
stable position and the sage advice that when
it comes to the widening gap between the
wealthy and the workers – the majority have
to say ‘Stop!” to the politicians to reverse this
trend.
ALUMNI CORNER
