The President’s Message
D
ear Fellows/
Members,
Season's greetings.
Currently the largest democracy of the
world is going through the process of
electing the new government. Various
parties are raising various issues as
their election planning and strategy.
However, the prominent issues that
require urgent attention are those of
corruption, unaccounted money
stationed overseas, cleansing of
inefficient and money hungry polity and
bureaucracy, and utilizing nation's
natural and other resources for the
benefit of common people of the
nation. Surely, our country is facing
long pending very serious issues and
common people feels that there are no
solutions available at least in near future.
However, if we citizens of the nation
follow what was once said by the
world's one of the most popular
political leader, "Ask Not What Your
Country Can Do For You, Ask What
You Can Do For Your Country"; the
solutions cannot be too far. The
"enemy" of the nation is not far away
from us, it is within us; let us get rid of
it together.
India is a young country with large
percentage of population below the age
of 35 years. These young people are
the future of our nation and by the same
token, the young engineers are the
future of our IGS. As was mentioned
earlier, to encourage them to get
involved and participate in Geotechnical
research and field work, we have
instituted a total of 15 biannual Best
Paper Awards specifically for Young
Geotechnical Engineers(YGE) and
eight(8) of these awards will be given
during IGC-2014 at Kakinada. Rules and
paper submission procedure is detailed
in this Newsletter. I request all YGE to
participate and submit papers.
To encourage students to become IGS
members, the Organizers of IGC-2014
at Kakinada have decided to offer
Rs.500/- discount in the registration
fees for IGS student members. I
request you to ask students to become
IGS members at the earliest and take
advantage of this offer.
Friends, see this Newsletter for the
extended dates, become members of
ISSMGE and submit abstracts for
ARC-2015 at Japan, also send your
application of IGS membership cards.
I am very happy to announce that IGS
long pending request to Karnataka
Geotechnical Centre(KGC) to change
its name to fall in line with the names
of other chapters has now been
successful and it is now called IGSBangalore Chapter. Thanks to all EC
members of KGC. Since last
Newsletter, 37th IGS Chapter at Trichi
has been inaugurated on February 14,
2014 followed by two days of
magnificent National Workshop.
Seminar/Workshops have also been
conducted by Kolkata, Bangalore,
Baroda, Guntur and Pune Chapters.
Election for office bearers for the term
2015-16 is due this year. The election
and all related activities will practically
be online, the schedule of which is
announced. This is one step forward
in the direction of making our IGS
paperless. The login ID is provided to
all the members. Members who have
communicated their email address to
IGS HQ have already be provided their
password also. For others, the
password is being mailed by post. This
will provide opportunity to all the
members to participate in the election
and cast their vote online regardless
whether they have email ID or not. I
however, request all such members to
create and provide their email ID so
that updates on election and all other
future IGS activities can be
communicated to them quickly and
efficiently.
Our very own annual mega event IGC2014 is coming up on 18-20 December,
2014 at JNTUKakinada organized by
Kakinada Chapter. Kakinada Chapter
has organized and hosted several events
very successfully in the past and 'am
sure with your support and
participation, the event will be a grand
success.

IGS Kakinada Chapter
Inaugurated in the year 1989, IGS Kakinada
Chapter has been one of the most vibrant
chapters of the national professional body. The
chapter, which has ever 150 members, has
organized several conferences, seminars,
symposia and work-shops over the years. Two
major conferences, Terzaghi-1996 and
CONCEPTS-2006 are still green in the memory
of the participants. Members of the chapter
have contributed significantly to research in
the areas of expansive soils and ground
improvement.
About JNTU Kakinada
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University,
Kakinada has been started in 2008, by
trifurcating JNTU Hyderabad. The University
has been striving to grow into a world-class
university. A Series of reforms have been
initiated recently to make learning on 'out come
- based' experience rather than a teacher centric and monotonous exercise. Excellence
is its watch - word.
