Gawai & Kaamatan Festival is a celebration that is celebrated by the people of Sarawak and
Sabah, mainly the Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu community. It is a celebration of thanksgiving
after the harvest of rice.
This year, which is the third time in Penang, Gawai and Kaamatan Festival will be held on 15
May 2016, Sunday, starting at 6:00pm at Fort Cornwallis, Georgetown. The event will be
officiated by the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Lim Guan Eng. Similar to previous years,
cultural dance performances from various ethnic groups of Sabah and Sarawak will be
presented during the night. The visitors will also be served with special dishes such as
Sarawak’s laksa, Kolo Mee, Ayam Pansuh and many more. And, it is free!
The special event of the night will be the final Queen Harvest Festival, better known as Kumang
Gawai in Sarawak and Unduk Ngadau in Sabah as well as Keling or King of the Harvest
Festival. It is a competition, where participants from respective ethnics will showcase traditional
tribal clothes. This whole event reflects the support of Penang State Government to the people
of Sabah and Sarawak who wander far from home either for work or study in Penang.
