This year s regatta attracted 6 314 partici
pants in 326 teams who competed in 17 cate
gories over three days
In the inter university 20 paddler perahu
kenyalang event one of three new categories
introduced this year Open University of
Malaysia took first place followed by Maktab
Kerjasama

Sarawak
and
Multimedia
The inter state category was won by Warisan
Melaka withjohor and Sarawak in second and
third places
Besides the longboat events there were also
races for kayak jet ski and perahu tnmbang
Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib
Mahmud in his opening speech said the
regatta was now a major festival in Sarawak
It started out as an event to get the different
tribes of Sarawak to compete in a peaceful
manner
