In 1870 Thomas Barnardo opened his first home for boys
in London. He went out at night into the slum districts
to find destitute boys. One evening, an 11 year - old boy,
John Somers was turned away because the shelter was full.
He was found dead two days later from malnutrition and
exposure and from then on the home bore the sign,
‘No Destitute Child Ever Refused Admission’.
Much has changed since then, and yet there are still children
and young people in Scotland today who suffer from
poverty, substance abuse, and physical and sexual cruelty,
and who need our help and support. The vision of Thomas
Barnardo lives on. Now the ethos of the charity is to believe
in children,
“No matter who they are, what they have done or what they
have been through. We will ensure their needs are met and
their voices are heard”.
So let me thank all of our supporters. Those who have so
kindly given auction prizes. Those who have given us gifts
in kind which allow us to put on such a wonderful event,
to the amazing Showtime committee who give so freely of
their time and energy and to you who are so generously
supporting Showtime tonight.
Together we are keeping Thomas Barnardo’s dream alive,
the dream that today is translated into the watchwords of
Barnardo’s Scotland.
Jo Caulfield is one of the most successful and instantly
recognisable comedians in the UK having been nominated
for various awards. The Guardian calls her “Scathing, bitchy
and intelligent with masses of attitude”, while The Observer
advocates “One of the finest female comedians at work”.
A regular guest on “Mock The Week”, “Have I Got News For
You” and “Never Mind The Buzzcocks”, Jo is also the star of
her own critically acclaimed Radio 4 comedy show “It’s That
Jo Caulfield Again”, while her annual show at the Edinburgh
Fringe has become one of the fastest ticket sellers at the
Festival. Behind the scenes, Jo is a highly successful comedy
writer, having been employed by ‘So Graham Norton’ for all
five series of its run as well as having put together pieces for
Joan Rivers and Ant and Dec.

Willie Allan will be our auctioneer for the evening. Willie
has been on the after-dinner circuit for many years and has
appeared in a variety of top venues across the UK. The vast
majority of his work is in the corporate market, where The
Herald described him as “probably the best after-dinner
speaker in Scotland”. He is comfortable chairing a function
or directing an auction, and is equally at home with a mixed
audience. At a recent dinner, The Scotsman described his
contribution as “a virtuoso performance”.

Every child deserves the best start in life, and the chance
to fulfil their potential. With the right help, committed
support and a little belief, even the most vulnerable
children and young people can turn their lives around.
Whilst it’s lovely to go home at the end of the evening with a
fabulous auction prize, there’s no better feeling than making a
donation directly to Barnardo’s work with vulnerable children and
young people in Scotland. It’s very simple, you can either make a
donation using the electronic bidding system or ask a volunteer
for a gift aid envelope.
Every Barnardo’s project is different, but each believes in the
potential in every child and young person, no matter who
they are, what they have done or what they have been through.
Every penny counts, here’s an idea of the difference
you could make to young people’s lives
██ We support vulnerable children, young people and
their families in their homes, schools and local
communities.
██ We assist children who are suffering from poverty,
abuse, homelessness, disability, exclusion or
parental substance abuse. Our vocational training
schemes help young people to achieve sustainable
employment.
██ Here in Scotland, 122 Barnardo’s services support
over 14,500 disadvantaged children and young
people every year.
██ We protect children from harm, help them to cope
with the challenges they face daily, and give them
the specialist support which they need.
██ Barnardo’s also campaigns tirelessly for better
care for children, and champions the rights of
every child.
██ Out of every £1.00 we spend, 95 pence goes
directly to our work with children.

peers and increase their confidence

Golf Lessons at Gleneagles
This is an opportunity for a younger fan (aged between 5-12)
from the green side of Edinburgh to be the Hibernian FC mascot
at their Scottish Premiership fixture against Partick Thistle
FC on Saturday 7 December 2013. Kick off at Easter Road is at
3pm, but the lucky youngster and an accompanying adult will
be treated to a brief ‘behind the scenes’ tour before leading out
the team and then taking their seats in the stand. Mascots must
bring their own kit.
The PGA National Golf Academy at Gleneagles provides an
excellent opportunity for players and coaches to work together
to develop their skills and expertise - from those who have never
held a club before, to those with dreams of carving a career
within the game! This lot offers you the chance to work with a
coach for two x one hour lessons that can be tailored to your
individual requirements, and make use of computer analysis
