Over the years there have been ups and downs but never a lack of dreams. Everyone who walks through Fairmount Center for the Arts is inspired to aspire – to tap, to leap, to solo, to sculpt, and to keep on dreaming. And 2014 has truly been a year of making dreams come true for Fairmount Center both inside and out. Through the generous support and guidance of our Board of Directors under the leadership of president Grant Cleveland, we have renovated and upgraded our facility, we have added new and talented program directors and faculty, and most recently we have added two new senior staff members – us. As the new artistic and business directors we are excited and honored to add our efforts to the rich tapestry of Fairmount Center as we seek to maintain fiscal growth and artistic daring. In our short time with Fairmount Center we have already met so many wonderful people and learned so many remarkable Fairmount stories, and we wanted to quickly share one of them with you. Early in the fall an angelic young voice started filling the Fairmount halls on Thursday afternoons. This was nine year-old Michael Temesi. His mother had noticed him singing around the house and thought he might benefit from singing lessons. She saw that Fairmount Center offered vocal instruction under the guidance of our Director of Music, David Fuller, and reached out to David. He immediately recognized Michael’s talent and eagerness to learn, accepted Michael as a student, and the rest is Fairmount history. What’s more, Michael’s little brother, Myles, is now studying piano with Omar Roy. The whole Temesi family has truly enriched Fairmount Center. You can learn more about both Michael and Myles as featured students in the Music Section of this 2015 Winter Catalog. We are currently in the midst of our 2014 Annual Campaign, “It Starts With a Dream” and sincerely encourage you to consider joining us with a donation. The annual fund will support tuition (only 85% of the cost of classes comes from our fees); a master artist workshop and performance series; and plans for the first Fairmount outdoor performance space and series. Whether through the annual fund or by taking a class your support is critical in making our current and future dreams a reality. Together we learn. We create. We let our spirits soar. Sincerely, Eric Schmiedl artistic director Jessica Manka business director Consider Fairmount for Your Event! Fairmount Center makes a terrific space for parties, showers, family gatherings and club meetings. We can customize kids’ birthday packages in art and dance and allow you to bring in your own food and cake, and even do some of your own decorating to create a personal, affordable event. A good offense compliments a good defense. Bernie Kosar threw touchdowns while Hanford Dixon batted them away. Brad Daugherty guarded the paint while Mark Price shot out the lights. This past fall the Board of Directors at Fairmount Center for the Arts kept this lesson in mind when they put together a winning team to lead the center forward into the future. Jessica Manka is the business director, guiding the financial and marketing activities, and Eric Schmiedl is the artistic director responsible for the artistic growth and development. Jessica has made her career working in the finance industry, and has plenty of experience working with non-profit organizations, including Cleveland’s PlayhouseSquare, and has an impressive background in finance, project management and grant work. She also studied Art History and Fine Art at the University of Cincinnati’s college of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning. “I was so impressed by the caliber of talent here. Some of the best and brightest are at Fairmount. I am honored to be able to be a part of it.” Eric comes to Fairmount Center with over twenty-five years of experience in the professional theatre working as a playwright and director with theatres including The Cleveland Play House and Cleveland Public Theatre in the Cleveland area and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth and the Denver Center Theatre Company across the country. A native Clevelander, he considers himself lucky to have grown up near a vibrant community theatre in Aurora where he received his first experiences in theatre at a very young age. “The first time I walked into the theatre I immediately knew this is it. This is home.” He is very excited to provide the same experience and atmosphere at Fairmount Center. Eric Schmiedl, Artistic Director Eric Schmiedl is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and a graduate of Kent State University and the University of Hawaii. His plays have been produced by theatres including the Denver Center Theatre Company, the Cleveland Play House, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Cleveland Public Theatre, the Lantern Theatre, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, New Stages Theatre, the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, the Oregon Children’s Theatre, Karamu House, Adventure Stage Chicago, Signal Ensemble Theatre, Great Lakes Theater Company, and BackStage Theatre in Chicago. His adaptation of Kent Haruf’s acclaimed novel BENEDICTION is scheduled for production at the Denver Center Theatre Company in the 2014/2015 season, and his play HUCK FINN opened the 2014 Lantern Theatre season. He has worked on the artistic staffs of The Cleveland Play House, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and the Alabama Shakespeare festival. Eric has also worked as a theatrical director and performer at various theatres around Cleveland and throughout the country. This Christmas season he will appear in Cleveland Public Theatre’s production of SANTALAND DIARIES at Playhouse Square. He is the recipient of a 2012 Creative Workforce Fellowship as well as an Aurand Harris Fellowship, two Edgerton Awards, and a Sloan Foundation Commission. Eric is a member of The Cleveland Play House’s Playwrights’ Unit and is on the faculty of the Low-residency Master of Fine Arts in Writing program at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. Jessica Manka, Business Director Jessica Manka has made her career working in the finance industry with generous involvement working with not-for-profit organizations in project management, programming, media and community relations, and outreach. Jessica has worked for groups and organizations of various size and scope as a project manager, finance coordinator, and fundraiser, including roles at Playhouse Square and several independent non-profit organizations. Jessica, having always been an enthusiast of the arts, attended the University of Cincinnati majoring in Art History. She grew up on the west side of Cleveland, excelling in sports and the arts, and has made the greater Cleveland area her home. In her downtime, she enjoys visiting Cleveland’s historic icons and museums and spending time outside with her family and friends. Catherine Fritz, Administrative Assistant Cathy joined the Fairmount family amidst the hustle and bustle of our fall 2014 semester, and brought her dynamic personality and skills with her! Cathy’s illustrious background includes working with Bellefaire JCB and the Beaumont School, with many years of experience successfully and warmly taking administrative charge. Cathy is an east side native and resides in Gates Mills, where she enjoys partaking in many of the wonderful events and sites Cleveland has to offer. Whether it is preparing to create a paper maché pumpkin with Miss Brigitte or performing a plié with Mr. Moodie her joyful enthusiasm is absolutely infectious. What’s even more impressive is that she does not leave the art at Fairmount Center. Maria’s mom, Shannon, revealed that they’ve incorporated lessons into their daily lives. “We’ll often chassé across the room to get something when we’re at home.” And we are so lucky that Shannon and Maria have chasséd to Fairmount Center to brighten all of our lives through movement, art, and an absolutely cheerful grin. And without a doubt the Hill family is a multidisciplinary family. Sarah and her twin brothers Nathan and Ryan are singers, dancers, and actors, and they continually share their skills and talents in every activity they undertake at Fairmount Center. Sarah is a level 5 member of the Fairmount Dance Theatre program, studies voice with David Fuller, and is the Evil Step Mother in the fall Youth Theatre Lab production of Cinderella. On top of that she is also a student at Laurel School. Nathan and Ryan, who go to Chagrin Falls Intermediate School, take Modern Dance, level 3, and have roles in Cinderella, too. “Yeah, it’s lots of fun doing things together,” Sarah recently mentioned after Cinderella rehearsal as she prepared for dance rehearsal. The boys agreed. “I love performing,” they said as they began reenacting their roles with their sister and the other kids in the cast. Yes, it’s truly a Fairmount family affair, and it is great! 12 Fairmount Dance Theater (FDT) wishes to bring the beauty of dance to the community and to provide classical dance training for aspiring dancers ages 5-18. FEATuRED STuDENT CHARlOTTE JONS While she is a Mouse in the fall Youth Theatre Lab production of Cinderella, eight year-old Charlotte Jons is definitely the ‘mouse that roared.’ Bright, charming, and passionate about performing Charlotte is a theatrical dynamo and a vibrant member of Fairmount Center. Ask the Hershey Montessori School student what she likes most about being on stage and without missing a beat she will say, “the audience.” Charlotte intuitively recognizes the special relationship between actor and audience that a theatrical performance creates. And she should know. She made a huge splash as Toto in last spring’s Youth Theatre Lab production of The Wizard of Oz at Fairmount Center. “It was so much fun.” Another of the great memories created by the students, instructors, and supporters of Fairmount Center for the Arts. 2015 Winter Session: January 5 - March 15 • Fairmount Center For the Arts Theatre Youth Theatre diREcTOR: PaTTi susMan Pippi Longstocking Age: Day/Time: 7-14 yrs (Class limit 30) Saturday, 9:30-12:30pm (February 21 - May 17) Instructor: Patti Susman, Joan Bendix Fee: $320 The Fairmount Center Youth Theatre Lab is designed to train young actor’s techniques in acting, dance and music while working on a musical production. Under her leadership this merry band of children create a marching band without instruments, hand out gold coins to strangers, baffle nosey neighbors, and thwart a pair of bungling thieves. The Winter/Spring Youth Theatre Lab session will begin on Saturday, February 21 and run consecutive Saturdays until the performances on May 15, 16, and 17. All classes are conducted at the Fairmount Center main campus with performances hosted at the Mayfield Village Civic Center. FEATuRED STuDENT kAylEE & lukE TOMSICH “For me, it’s like riding on the front of a boat. It’s so exciting.” This was Luke Tomsich’s reflection about what it’s like to be on stage in front of an audience. And he should know. He’s a threeyear veteran of the Youth Theatre Lab, having appeared in productions including Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz. His older sister Kaylee is even more seasoned as she starts her fifth year as an actress at Fairmount Center. This fall they will both perform in the Youth Theatre Lab’s production of Cinderella. Kaylee is taking on the role of Prudence, one of the nasty step sisters. “I like constructing a character,” she recently noted after rehearsal at Fairmount Center. “I like becoming someone else.” Naturally fun-loving and friendly, Kaylee will have to draw on these skills as she creates a character so different from herself. Luke has a slightly easier job. “I’m the Prince!” Outside of the theatre both Tomsich children love books and when asked to name their favorite author both chime in together. Rick Riordan. “Percy Jackson is awesome!” So are Kaylee and Luke. 2015 Winter Session: January 5 - March 15 • Fairmount Center For the Arts 19 Art Toddler/Preschool Art Classes storybook art 5-week session (January 7 - February 4) Age: 18 mos–3 yrs Day/Time: Wednesday, 9:30-10:30am Instructor: Brigitte Fiorille Fee: $65 (materials fee included) Enjoy time together as we read books to gain inspiration for our art. FEATuRED STuDENT kAy SCHOTzINGER “I was definitely skeptical.” This was Kay Schotz’s first reaction when a friend told her about the ceramics program at Fairmount Center for the Arts. “She knew I was interested in pottery. I’d ‘ooo and aahh’ at pottery we’d see together, but I didn’t think it was anything I could ever do myself.” However, Ms. Schotz finally did accept the invitation to visit Fairmount Center and the group of students and artists exploring ceramic work, and that initial visit has now blossomed into a nearly twelve year relationship with Fairmount Center. “I was hooked right from the start.” And it was the community which really made the difference. Under the thoughtful guidance of Director of Art, Brigitte Fiorille, the Studio Ceramics classes provide an opportunity for students of all levels to explore and grow in a nurturing environment. “I’ve always felt that ceramics is a grown person’s excuse for playing in the mud. It’s given me a second childhood.” A retired member of the Northeast Ohio Medical University staff and faculty, Ms. Schotz is currently working on a unique and very personal pottery series. She is taking the last remaining piece of lace created by her mother-in-law and is imprinting the lace into body of her own pottery. In this way Ms. Schotz is able to create multiple ceramic replicas of this single piece of lace. She then plans to give each of her six grandchildren one of the ceramic replicas. “This way each grandchild will have something to remember their great-grandma by.” It is another wonderful example of the way in which art can preserve, enrich, and inspire. dRaGOn JOkE Look at them laughing! A first-time student at Fairmount Center for the Arts this past fall she joined the ceramics class and is having the time of her life. She started her journey into pottery with a pinch pot and quickly moved on to working with the wheel. “I like the wheel,” she said after one of her classes. “The motion is so cool.” A graduate of West Geauga, Makenzie currently attends Lakeland College and is studying sign language. However, she has no problem with getting her hands messy with clay. Never having worked in ceramics before, Makenzie saw the class listed in the Fairmount Center’s Fall Catalog and thought she’d give it a try, and she has been very happy with the results. “Brigitte is a wonderful teacher,” Makenzie noted. “She is so patient and very helpful.” And with this hard work Makenzie has blossomed into a gifted artist. The Temesi boys come from a musical family. However, family history can only take you so far. It takes dedication, commitment, and hard work to grow and succeed as an artist, and both Michael and Myles Temesi are well on their way to success. Their mother, Anahid, thought about Fairmount Center after she noticed her eldest son singing around the house. “I thought, ‘He’s singing. He’s really singing, and it sounds like he’s hitting all the right notes.’” So, she approached the Fairmount Director of Music, David Fuller, to inquire about private vocal lessons. Mr. Fuller immediately recognized Michael’s talent. What’s more, he was particularly impressed with Michael’s determination to improve. “He does his homework. He’s such a serious student. It’s inspirational.” Myles, who is seven years-old, is equally focused on his work studying piano with Omar Roy at Fairmount Center. And the hard work is already paying off as Michael was just cast as the lead in the upcoming Notre Dame Elementary School (NDES) Saturday production of Aladdin. But, the boys also have other outside interests including playing laser tag with friends as well as Mario Super Smash Bros. They are both fans of pizza, too. “Yeah, pizza’s good,” Myles says with a sly smile. “Just not with mushrooms.” 24 JACOB kElSEy Jake Kelsey is currently a junior at Cleveland Institute of Music studying classical guitar with Jason Vieaux. According to a study by College Board in 2010, students who took music lessons for four years or more scored an average of 100 points higher on the SATs than students who did not play a musical instrument. In addition, studying music improves recall and retention of verbal information, advances math achievement and boosts reading and language arts skills. According to research by Mitchell Gaynor M.D. (Sounds of Healing), music also has therapeutic physical effects, including reduced anxiety, heart and respiratory rates, reduced cardiac complications, lowered blood pressure and increased immune responses. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Cello Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studies with renowned Suzuki pedagogue Dr. Melissa Kraut. Eric is principal cellist with the Mansfield Symphony, and has performed in numerous regional orchestras in the Midwest. As founding member of the Aceso Quartet, he traveled to Denmark this fall for a residency at the Hvide Sande Masterclass. During the summer, he performed as soloist with both the Miami Summer Music Festival and the Central Lakes Symphony orchestras. Eric has also attended the National Orchestral Institute, Round Top Festival Institute, and the Bravo! Chamber Music Institute. An avid teacher of all levels, he currently teaches at the Cleveland School of the Arts, Aurora School of Music and Joyful Noise School of Music. Trained in both a traditional style as well as in the Suzuki method, Eric offers instruction in both approaches. Grateful for the many diverse musical influences he experienced in his own training, Eric credits his years playing alto saxophone in jazz band for constantly reminding him that classical music should be just as free and expressive! 2015 Winter Session: January 5 - March 15 • Fairmount Center For the Arts 25 26 2015 Winter Session: January 5 - March 15 • Fairmount Center For the Arts – proudly supporting the arts – One-of-a-Kind Handcrafted Items Oak, Cherry & Hickory Furniture A Treasure Today...
