JAPANESE PROVERB CORNER JAPANESE PROVERB OF THE MONTH たよ よ たよ 「便りのないのは良い便り」 Tayori no nai no ha yoi tayori This proverb has a perfect English equivalent—‘no news is good news.’ Why? Because apparently (according to my dictionary) this is a Western proverb that was translated into Japanese. Of course there are many ‘borrowed words’ (for example: パン(pan)=bread, アンケート(ankeeto)=questionnaire) from other languages that have become part of the Japanese language, but it would seem that this borrowing is not necessarily limited to words but to phrases and proverbs as well. I find examples like this prove that my grandmother’s words are true: language is living. It is always changing and adapting to the world around it. It is part of what makes learning and mastering different languages fun and yet difficult at the same time! the globe page 4 SERVICES HELLO WORK FUKUYAMA Hello Work provides advice and services to arrange employment for foreign nationals.
