One of Japan's first and most famous illuminations is the Kobe Luminarie, which has been held every December since 1995 in order to commemorate the Great Hanshin earthquake. In Osaka, the “Festival of the Lights in Osaka” event includes many different light displays throughout the city, such as the trees lit up along Midosuji Boulevard. However, you don't have to go all the way to Osaka or Kobe just to enjoy the lights! In Hiroshima City, illuminations line Heiwa Odori from now until January 3 (from 5:30PM to 10:30PM). Impressive displays will also be featured in Kure along Kuramoto-dori Street (a 10 minute walk from JR Kure Station) from December 4 to January 3 (from 5:00PM to 11:00PM). One of the prefecture's biggest holiday light events is at the Bihoku Hillside Park Winter Illumination in Shobara, to be held this year from now until early January (from 5:30PM to 9:00PM; closed Dec. 31, Jan. 1, and Jan. 4). Finally, here in Fukuyama, the Luxeater illumination event will continue again this year, with events happening from December 12 to December 20 at Central Park and Rose Com. In Central Park, main illuminations will be held during that time from 5:00PM to 9:00PM, and on December 19 and 20, art displays and food stands will also be available that evening. Inside Rose Com, the first floor will feature concerts and other events in the evening, and on the fourth floor there will be calligraphy performances and an area for you to try calligraphy yourself on December 19 (time to be announced). See the Luxeater website at http://luxeater.jp/ (in Japanese only) for more details. Get into the holiday spirit this year with one of Japan's many illuminations! Have a safe holiday and a happy new year! Note that this issue is combined for December and January. There will be no separate issue of The Globe in January. photograph Origami rose ornaments adorning the Christmas tree in JR Fukuyama Station (2014). in this issue winter night lights...1 fage events and services...2 fukuyama events...3 city services...4 notices from the city...4 hospital holiday hours...5 medical information...6 deep in the kitchen...6 in our neighborhood...7 japanese classes...7 movie information...8 2 FAGE Events and Services One-Pair Lesson: Free Japanese Tutoring for Foreign Residents Free one-on-one Japanese language tutoring for beginners is available through the FAGE office. The students studied at the Maui Language Institute for several days, followed by tours around the island and events planned by the Maui County Sister Cities Foundation. The whole time the students were in Maui, they stayed with homestays sponsored by the Sister Cities Foundation, and while they noted how nervous they were at first, they were soon able to connect with their host families, and departing from the island they quickly came to love was a tearful, emotional experience. They expressed their hope that their experiences will inspire their classmates to visit other countries, and they were all very glad to have had this experience in Fukuyama's sister city. Culture Zone Walk & Hike Due to inclement weather, the Culture Zone Walk & Hike event scheduled for November 8 was cancelled. We hope that those who signed up still got a chance to see the beautiful autumn foilage around the city.
