the flower of autumn
While many people think of cherry blossoms when they
think of the flowers of Japan, it is the chrysanthemum
(kiku) that steals the show in autumn.
While the original species of chrysanthemums found in
Japan had small blossoms, it was the introduction of
Chinese varieties of chrysanthemums during the 8th
century that brought the flowers you see around the
country today.
The chrysanthemum has been used in the emblem of the
imperial family for centuries, and you can see this emblem
in various places around Japan, such as at formerly
state-endowed shrines. Chrysanthemums are also used as
a decorative garnish on sashimi (if you were ever
wondering what those yellow things were!).
In Fukuyama, the chrysanthemum was designated as the
flower of Shinichi and was later added as a flower of the
city of Fukuyama when Shinichi was merged with
Fukuyama in 2003.
You can see the beautiful chrysanthemums of Fukuyama
at the Chrysanthemum Exhibition at Fukuyama Castle,
which will be from October 23 to November 16 this year
(see page 3 for more details).
Another way the flowers are showcased in Japan is in the
form of kiku-ningyo, or chrysanthemum dolls. In this form
of art, flowers are arranged into the shapes of dolls or other
figures using wire frames. Some kiku-ningyo are
occasionally displayed during the chrysanthemum
exhibition in Fukuyama, although this style of art has
become less popular in recent years.
Be sure to check out this autumn flower around the city
later this month!

This section will introduce various facilities, locations, and other things that you may
not have known existed in Fukuyama! Please note that many of these only offer
services in Japanese.
Fukuyama in Numbers
Are you a fan of statistics? On Fukuyama's official
website, there are statistics on the number of
residents living in the city that are updated every
month. You can read the statistics on the number
of residents broken up by age (did you know as of
July of this year there are over 250 people over the
age of 100 in Fukuyama?), as well as broken up by
area, so if you were curious how many people
were living in Higashisakura-machi, where
Fukuyama City Hall is located, you can look that
up too (if you were curious, it is 737!). View all the
statistics online at

In Our Neighborhood
Japanese Volunteer Support Course
On August 22, August 29, and September 12, FAGE held the its
three-day course on how to teach Japanese to foreign citizens.
The class was taught by Mr. Yasuhiro Inukai of the Hiroshima
International Center, who has had much experience teaching
Japanese volunteers how to better communicate with people who
have a low level of Japanese.
One portion of the course featured several guest volunteers, a
group of Japanese-learning foreign citizens of Fukuyama. These
volunteers helped show the Japanese participants the difficulties
of living in a country with a language different from their own.
Participants of this course will be able to use what they have
learned through volunteer activities such as one-pair lessons.
Interested in learning Japanese with a volunteer from FAGE? See
more details about our one-pair lesson service on page 2.
