Flitwick Cricket Club is a Clubmark Accredited club in central Bedfordshire with over 50 adult
playing members. On Saturdays we enter three teams in the Saracens Hertfordshire League
(Divisions 1, 6 & 12) and four teams on Sunday. The first, second and third teams play in the
Bedfordshire County League. The Ist XI play in the Premier Division, the 2nd XI in Division 2 and
the 3rd XI in the newly created 5th Division. We also enter a team in the Beds Development League.
As one of the most social and progressive sporting clubs in the county we are always keen to
welcome new members, regardless of age or ability. If you are a player looking for a new club,
a new player having moved to the area, or simply want to find out more about us, then please
feel free to either drop into the club during the summer, contact one of the officials, or visit
www.flitwickcc.play-cricket.com for more information.
We hope you enjoy reading and using this book throughout the season.

With just 41 more sleeps to go before the first league match of 2012
at The Vale, the tension of a new season begins to grip us all. Will the
1st XI challenge for honours in Div 1 of the Saracens Hertforshire
Cricket League? Will they go one better than last year on Sundays
and snatch the Beds League title for the 4th time? Will the 3rd XI
repeat last years success with back to back promotions? Will anyone
surpass Gavin Moss’ record score of 169? And who will make the first
strike towards the Sathaway Sixes Cup? The questions are endless,
but one thing is for sure; Flitwick Cricket Club will maintain its
position as one of the elite clubs in this rural county of Bedfordshire.
With Colts sides from Under 10 through
to Under 16, three Senior league teams on
Saturday and four Senior league teams on
Sunday we expect our practise facilities to be
used for more than 1,500 individual sessions
by more than 150 club members during the
coming season, and our playing area will hold
at least 150 matches in the 2012 season.
These figures are the “Inspired Facilities
Throughput Figures” quoted by the club to
Sport England earlier this year, and will rise
yearly over the next 5 years. So you can see
that a lot of hard work is put into this club by
a number of people. This is the simple recipe
for success. The result of all this is that you
will see a new logo on the front of this year’s
handbook. We are absolutely delighted to
announce that Flitwick Cricket Club have
secured £24,000 of Olympic legacy funding
from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities
Fund. The money is going towards improving
the ground drainage system at The Vale and
has already paid for the new cricket nets,
sightscreens and a new non-turf pitch at
our 3rd XI ground at Wrest Park. I would
personally like to offer a huge vote of thanks
to all who have been involved in securing this
essential funding for the club.
So what about 2012? Improved nets, better
playing area, new coach; yes by the end of
April we will welcome our new Sri Lankan
player/coach, Chamara De Zoysa. Chamara
has played first class cricket in Sri Lanka and
will be strengthening our sides on Saturday
and Sunday, but his main role within the
club is that of Coach. He will be organising
colts and, indeed, senior coaching on a daily
basis throughout the summer. Wednesday
evenings are “Open Age Group” or Senior
practice evenings, and can be attended by
anyone looking to play for the club during the
coming season. These sessions are organised
to give the best results for all levels of ability.
Chamara will be in attendance each week and
we hope he enjoys his stay in Mid Beds area.
Lack of income is something hitting many
clubs nationally, but Flitwick Cricket Club
is always pro-active in looking for sponsors
and we would like to give a huge thank you
to our current principal sponsors Urban
& Rural, who have supported our club
constantly, despite some very lean periods
over the past few years. They have given us
huge support in the modernisation of our
clubhouse facilities, which bring us a healthy
income throughout the year. Our club lounge
offers “party” opportunities for up to 100
guests, with stage and catering facilities.
During the winter months there are not many
weekends when this room is not rocking to
the disco sounds of the seventies or eighties.
In addition to our principal sponsor I would
also like to extend a warm thank you to all our
match sponsors whose donations are vitally
important to aid the club in maintaining our
current high standards.

FLITWICK CC LIFE MEMBERS
During the coming year, I would particularly
like to extend a very warm welcome to all our
opposition players and officials visiting our
picturesque ground this season. We hope
you have an enjoyable stay, but be prepared
for a competitive and hard fought match.
These are our traditions. And finally, welcome
to all the umpires and scorers who have the
pleasure of officiating in such beautiful
surroundings, and last but not least, welcome
to the spectators visiting paradise for the
day.
To everyone, lets make 2012 the best year
yet, both on and off the pitch. Good Luck.

Club Chairman

I feel we really need competition for places in the 1st X1 and we must hope for
better fortunes this year with injuries and availability. The younger members of
our club continued to make good progress last year and should be pushing hard
for places in all three of our adult sides again in 2012, not only playing but also
making real match defining contributions with bat and ball.
CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE
2012 promises to be another exciting year at the Vale.
After the double title winning year in 2010, 2011 was a
crucial year and maintaining our status as a Herts Division 1
side was the goal. This never really looked in doubt and the
1st X1 were not in the bottom 2 all year. There were some
hefty defeats along the way but we also won more games
than a lot of the sides around us in the division. This shows
we have the players capable of making match winning
contributions at this level and the key this year will be to
compete in all matches rather than 30 points or nothing!
Sundays were always going to be a harder task this year with availability not what
it was for our title winning season but Phil and the team put up a really valiant
defence (ending up in second place) and can certainly look back with pride on the
season. This year sees the introduction of power plays which FCC has championed
for a while now. I am sure this will create a few moments to remember and quick
changes of batting order in the coming months!
The desire to get our second team promoted is as strong as ever and I see no
reason why this can’t be the year. With the third team also continuing to produce
outstanding results and the colts growing every year, things are looking good for
Flitwick Cricket Club. We have a tremendous network of people putting hard work
in behind the scenes and it is this structure that allows the club to flourish and
the players to play their cricket on our wonderful ground.
Enjoy your cricket, play with a smile and keep winning!

In 1994, The Otters made a positive decision
to invest in an overseas cricketer for the
first time. That person was the shy & retiring
Australian, Damien Dunlop, an opening bowler
and “middle order” batsman! The club soon
established that DD was a fine bowler, as he
registered 103 wickets, however his batting
was truly hopeless, and he was christened
Thumper, as a complete rabbit!
After much badgering of Summers, Damien
was again hired as our overseas player for
the 2002 season and he again registered
103 wickets, together with a love-in with
Rosemary which meant that he did not
return to Australia! Over the forthcoming ten
seasons, Damien contributed significantly to
the success of the club, provided many truly
hilarious on-field moments as his competitive
nature took over, and helped many others to

learn how to win matches. In latter years, his
role as Cricket Development Officer for Bucks
led to opportunities to put the cones out for
visiting international teams at Lord’s, and he
was memorably compared by Nasser Hussain
on live commentary, to The Duke Of Kent! From
Aussie beach boy to royalty!!
In January 2012, Damien secured a role with
Cricket Victoria back in his native Australia
and “emigrated” back home, with Rosemary
and family due to join DD at Easter, and the
Flitwick family wish the whole family every
success for their exciting future, and thank
Damien sincerely for all he has done for the
club. Who will ever forget “that’s how you catch
‘em cymbals”, “have you done your exams?”,
“give me more advice, I love it”, “beat that like
a bad child”, and “give me more slow bowling”!!

including 24 ducks!
Living up to the heights of 2010 was always likely to prove challenging,
however The Otters still recorded a number of successes to be proud of.
Fresh from promotion to Hertfordshire Division One, a strong start was
checked by availability challenges, including losing Sura for half of the
season. A last day loss saw the first team finish in eighth place, their
lowest ranking all summer, but comfortably above the relegated clubs.
Progress from a season of consolidation is expected in 2012. The Sunday
first team remained competitive throughout the season, but a poor June
reversed fortunes and a second placed finish was the best that could be
achieved. A number of young players were successfully blooded in the first
team and that bodes well for the future.
The second teams finished in mid table on both days and it is here where
the teenage brigade need to cash in with runs and wickets galore as they
progress their development! Promotion from Division Six is a key priority
for the club in 2012, whilst remaining competitive in Division Two of the
Beds League on Sundays.
2011 SEASON REVIEW
The Otters say good bye to a
legend – Damien (the Duke,
Thumper) Dunlop
The third team moved their Saturday cricket from the Millman League,
into the Herts League structure, and duly earned promotion from Division
Thirteen at the first attempt, under the youthful captaincy of Michael
Bodo. A fine effort from all the players that featured, let’s hope that
Division Twelve can also be safely negotiated.

On the warm Friday night on the 1st July the
lads team won the toss and put themselves
in to bat. What followed was an eventful
game which saw dad pitched against lad. The
Twenty/20 format allowed each dad and lad
to bowl 2 overs. Batsmen had to retire on 20
so everyone had a chance to bat and bowl.
A special 18th birthday Twenty20 cricket match was arranged between the Lads and Dads,
resulting in an impressive collection of fathers and sons, with the theme continuing with the
umpires, David and Lee Butterworth taking charge of the game, and with Mark Wynn in the
scorebox, whilst dad Malcolm had prepared the wicket.
A great start by the dads team saw the 2
openers Wigfield and Bodo out – Wigfield top
edged behind to the keeper – bowled by his
dad (using his wrong arm!) and Bodo was out
from an amazing one handed catch by his dad!
At 7 for 2 off 2 it was all to play for, however
Jack Fuller was next to come in to bat and
turned the tables.!
A pre-match interview on 3 Counties Radio heard Richard and John Wigfield talk about how this
was far more than just a game.
LADS TEAM
With Jack Fuller, Harry Thurstance, Dom
Moxon, Sam Craig and Ross Bailey all retired
not out when they reached their 20s, the
lads managed an excellent 177 with Richard
Wigfield the pick of the older bowlers with
2–10.

DADs v LADs GAME 2011
Members at Flitwick Cricket Club will never forget the day when Michael Bodo,
Jack Fuller and John Wigfield were born on the same day back in July 1993 as
their fathers Stefan, Alistair and Richard were all playing Otters. Their birth
resulted in the story being reported in the local and national newspapers, on
radio and television.
This total proved too much for the Dads as they struggled to make an impression with only Phil
Gurney reaching the retirement mark of 20. John Wigfield and MIchael Bodo managed to dismiss
their fathers as the Dads failed to make three figures, being all out for 97.
A truly entertaining game of cricket was well supported by family, friends and members of the
cricket club.

We welcome girls and boys of all abilities, experience and skill levels to join
our young players section. In 2011 we had 163 young players aged 6–16 years
registered with us, ranging from absolute beginners to county standard. In
addition to weekly training there are opportunities to play in both friendly
and Bedfordshire Youth League matches. In 2012 we have entered 2 teams
at U10, U12, U14 and one at U16. For players of U13 and above, there are
opportunities to play open age group cricket at the weekend. In 2011 19
colts played senior cricket
In 2011 our U15 team were runners up in County NatWest Cricket Cup
competition and the U16 team were runners up in the Southern Division of
the Bedfordshire Youth Cricket League.
Our aims are to
n Develop the technical and tactical
skills of batting, bowling & fielding
through drills & games
n Develop an understanding of the game
n Develop critical thinking skills
n Develop team-working skills
n Provide opportunities to play cricket
competitively
A junior membership costs £35 per
individual for the full season which includes
all training sessions and colts match fees.
Membership entitles parents and carers to
be associate members of the club.
For families with more than one junior
member a fee of £50 is payable.
