J u r a s s i c pe r i o d ( 1 9 9 . 6 - 1 4 5 . 5 M a ) Dinosaurs roamed the land. Some of the largest animals ever to walk the Earth were the huge plant-eating sauropods. Some small dinosaurs developed feathers, probably for insulation, and later some developed the ability to fly, and in doing so evolved into birds. When Pangaea broke up, it created two smaller supercontinents, Laurasia and Gondwana. Gondwana, which included Australia, extended from the Equator to the South Pole. Throughout this period, Australia drifted south. Conifers, ferns and cycads dominated the landscape and it was during this period that the first tree-ferns appeared.
