ANNUAL REPORT KFTG Annual Report 2012.indd 1 7/12/13 3:05 PM Welcome As we hear about how Jerry Sandusky misused his role as a trusted adult to abuse children, it would be nice to think this is an isolated tragedy. Yet Reverend Carlson in Bangor used a similar tactic right here in Maine. Board of Directors When these children are asked why they didn’t tell anyone, they reply: “Who would have listened?” We do. We listen. Officers President Ralph Austin President-Elect Gretchen Pianka Treasurer David Reid Secretary Carrie Shaw Diana Abbott Ginny Crowley Ruth Dealy Corey Huntress Cynthia Karolides Marc Lamontagne Pam Langelier Jackie Millett Tim Nelson Doug Saurman Staff Executive Director Laurie DuPaul Program Coordinator Debbie Duross Prevention Educator Leah Paltanawick Each year, we teach hundreds of adults to listen and thousands of children to speak up. In 2012, we reached over 7,500 students with our prevention programs in 22 towns in York County. More than 1,600 5th graders in 6 school districts participated in Break the Silence. This program uses children telling their stories in a video to help other children speak out about abuse and get help. We also work with preschool and elementary children to teach them about personal body safety and families to strengthen peaceful parenting skills. Your help is needed now more than ever as cases of abuse and neglect are increasing right here in York County. For over thirty years, Kids Free to Grow has been preventing child abuse in York County and we are working to be here for at least thirty more. By utilizing an outsourcing model, we are proud to report a balanced projected budget for FY 2013 without decreasing the number of children and families we reach. This model is an innovative approach to the prolonged economic downturn and state budget cuts. The life long health effects of adverse childhood events currently cost the State of Maine over two billion dollars each year. Once a child has been abused, no amount of money can take it away. The damaging effects of abuse span generations, as with the violent death of baby Ethan Henderson right here in Arundel, Maine. Ethan was killed by his father in a fit of frustrated rage, himself a victim of abuse. Kids Free to Grow is dedicated to preventing these adverse childhood experiences and stopping the cycle of abuse. We can continue to prevent lasting harm to children and strengthening the families around us. Your investment in the future is both financially and ethically sound. For each dollar you give to prevent child abuse, $2.88 is saved in long-term costs. Thank you from all of us on behalf of the children and families of York County. Gretchen Pianka, MD President, Board of Directors 1 KFTG Annual Report 2012.indd 2 7/12/13 3:05 PM Our Programs Kids Free to Grow runs Project Prevention, Break the Silence, Project Empathy and Baby Think it Over in schools throughout York County. They also run the Summer Institute and Pathways Programs as well as Mandated Reporter Training. In the 2011-2012 school year, our programs reached over 10,000 children, families and professionals working with children. Over half of the children and families participating in our programs are low-income. PinWheel Gardens PinWheel Gardens is a national initiative to raise awareness that children experience abuse in every community. April is National Child Abuse Awareness month and we encourage you to plant a pinwheel garden—learn how on our website. Break The Silence Kids speak out about abuse by telling their own stories in a video to empower students to get help for themselves or a friend in need. Program format includes engaging discussions and activities for kids in grades 5 and 6. Rick Charette Rick Charette has partnered with the Child Abuse Prevention Council for over 25 years helping children to hear the message on Personal Body Safety with lyrics, script and puppets. This is a 50-minute concert for children in grades K - 3. Sing-a-long songs and engaging puppets teach young children about personal body safety. Project Empathy Puppets in a “Playground Pals” video will model empathy in four skits highlighting respectful behaviors, bullying prevention, and increasing accountability in personal and social interactions, includes review of personal safety rules . Students in grades K - 4 take part in role play and discussion. No More Secrets Play A sensitive one-act play for elementary-school children addressing the difficult subject of child abuse through a blend of music, humor and candor. Baby Think It Over: Grades 7-12 Baby Think it Over uses computer simulator “babies” to teach parenting and child abuse prevention skills to students ing rades 7 - 12. Adolescents learn about why nurturing and empathy are important skills, and the importance of never shaking a baby. Parenting Programs Kids Free to Grow offers parenting programs in the community. We generally offer 2 - 4 classes in the Fall and again in the late winter/ early spring months. The parenting programs utilize the Active Parenting Now curriculum which promotes healthy communication, the establishment of empathy in the parent and non-violent ways of discipline. 2 KFTG Annual Report 2012.indd 3 7/12/13 3:05 PM Financial Highlights October 1, 2011—September 30, 2012 Grants to support our programs are becoming even more difficult to secure and United Way dollars are spread more thinly throughout the community. Ten years ago, private donations made up only 10% of the council’s revenue; now private donations account for 22% of revenue. We are working hard to continue to maximize the impact of each dollar by decreasing overhead costs and increasing the percentage of each dollar that goes to program. Operating expenses were $225,348 while revenue was slightly down compared to 2010-2011 at $161,740. We were able to bridge the gap by drawing on investment assets. 3 KFTG Annual Report 2012.indd 4 7/12/13 3:05 PM Honor Roll of Giving October 1, 2011—September 30, 2012 The prevention of child abuse requires everyone’s involvement. Our efforts would be impossible without the generosity of so many individuals, businesses, services organizations, schools, churches, and municipal groups. We take this opportunity to gratefully acknowledge those people who have joined with us as a Partner in Prevention though their contributions both financial and in-kind. 19th Century Willowbrook Village A & S Limousine A Plus Appraisal Abacus Gallery Diana Abbott Acapello Salon & Spa Alisson’s Restaurant Amisi Animal Instinct Antiques on Nine Arundel Barn Playhouse Associated Eye Care Ralph & Suzanne Austin Aw Come On In Barnacle Billy’s Marie Barron Beaver Dam Campground Beyond Art Biddeford City Theater Biddeford Saco Country Club Big Daddy’s Ice Cream Bintliff’s Restaurant Blue Elephant Catering Boston Celtics Boston Duck Tours Brick Store Museum Bruce Haskell Photography CA Smith Photography Cape Arundel Golf Club Cape Arundel Inn Cape Neddick Country Club Captain Lord Mansion The Captain’s Galley Carla’s Carrots & Company Casco Bay Movers The Chef & Gardener Cinemagic Theaters – Saco Clip & Snip Coastal Organizing Solutions Comcast Congdon’s Family Restaurant & Bakery Victoria Coviello Virginia Crowley Stephen Curran CustomBuilt Personal Training Cutaway Salon Dannah Ruth Dealy Roger Deering, Jr. Dion Designs Don Nason’s Auto Service Dupuis Hardware & Locksmith Dutch Elm Golf Club Ruth Fernandez Fernleaf Bakery Fleurant Flowers & Design Frinklepod Farm Funtown/Splashtown USA Goldust and Rouge Gran’s Chowder House Hackmatack Playhouse Harbor Flag Headliners Comedy Club Hearth and Soul Hi Stepping Equestrian Center Home Furnishings Outlet Homestead Campground Howe’s Floor Store Hurlbutt Designs Hurricane Restaurant; Huston & Company Kathy Hutchins Industry Framing Ingraham Title Company It’s A Dog’s World It’s About You Salon Jake’s Seafood Restaurant Jimmy The Greek’s Restaurant Jokers Fun and Games Jonathan’s Mark Jones Joseph’s By the Sea Joshua’s Karats By The Sea Kennebunk Dairy Queen Kennebunkport Resort Collection Keys to the Kitchen Rachel Kilbride Theresa Kimball Michael Knight Kelly LaBrecque The Landing Store Diane Laurendeau Callie Lavoie Liberty Mutual - Nick Lofty Roger Lisica The Lobster Company Longhorn Steakhouse Mabel’s Lobster Claw Maine Credit Union League Marlows Annette Merrill Barbara Michel Mike’s Clam Shack Jacqueline Millett Mim on a Whim Misty Harbor Resort Mindy Muse Nabos Tim Nelson New Morning Natural Food The Nonantum Resort Nonesuch Books Nonesuch River Golf Club Northern York County YMCA Ogunquit Lobster Pound Ogunquit Playhouse Kevin Partridge Patry Family Realty Pearl Petty Gretchen Pianka & Brad Huot Pie in the Sky Bakery Patrice Pierce Pine Point Records Pineapple Ketch Point of View Inn Poofberry’s Toys Port Lobster Co, Inc Portland Dine Around Portland Sea Dogs Portland Stage Company Portland Symphony Orchestra Precision Transmission Ray’s Truck Service Sean Ready Roof Pro Matthew Rossignol Helen Rousseau Michelle Roy Run of The Mill Public House and Brewery Saco Bay Physical Therapy Saco Bay Tackle Saco River Valley Kiwanis Club Saco Valley Auto Care Saco Valley Credit Union Santora Fine Art Seacoast Gallery Sense-Sational Massage Carrie & David Shaw Simply You Shari Smith Stripers Waterside Restaurant Stutesy’s Pub and Grill; Paul Sullivan Sundaes at the Beach Thom’s Twin City Florist Diane Tobio Traditions Italian Ristorante Vacationland Bowling Center Vic’s Appliance Center Village by the Sea Warren’s Lobster House Water Country Water Park Nancy Waterman Weathervane Seafood Restaurant Webhannet Golf Club The White Barn Inn William Arthur WMTW, ABC 8 Womens Therapeutic Massage Xuron Corporation York County Federal Credit Union York’s Wild Kingdom York Body Works Zanadu John Zito Friends of Children Circle Individuals who have committed $1,000 or more for child abuse prevention.
