ANNUAL REPORT Welcome Kids Free to Grow is a wonderful non-profit with a profound mission: to prevent child abuse and neglect by empowering children and families in York County. Board of Directors Officers President Tim Nelson, RN Treasurer David Reid Secretary Marc Lamontagne Ralph Austin, Esq. Thomas P. Connolly, Jr. Stella Smith Julie Spenlinhauer Staff Executive Director Genevieve Gardner, LCSW Program Coordinator Kelli Wedgewood, LMSW-C Prevention Educator Leah Paltanawick Kids Free to Grow does an oustanding job educating children and families about child abuse. Just last year, we educated over 7,500 students in local public schools in 22 towns across York County. We taught hundreds of adults to listen better through parenting programs, and taught thousands of children to speak up. More than 1,600 fifth and sixth graders saw “Break the Silence,” our video presentation of children telling their stories to help other children speak up about abuse and ask for help. The lifelong health effects of adverse childhood events currently cost the State of Maine over two billion dollars each year. These damaging effects of abuse traumatize communities and families for generations. Kids Free to Grow prevents these adverse experiences and stops the cycle of abuse. We work to strengthen the families of York County. We know we can make a difference in a child’s life. We see it happen every day. For this reason, your investment in our future is financially and ethically sound. For each dollar you give to prevent child abuse, millions can be saved. I would like to personally thank Saco Valley Credit Union for their financial and volunteer commitments, as well as Biddeford Savings and Saco Biddeford Savings Institute. Kennebunk Savings Bank continued their remarkable support of our Annual Private Garden Tour of the Kennebunks, and the United Way and the Children’s Trust support our daily programming year after year. Thank you from all of us on behalf of the children and families of York County. Tim Nelson, RN President, Board of Directors 1 Our Programs Kids Free to Grow conducts educational programs in schools throughout York County. They also run the Summer Institute and Mandated Reporter Training. In the 2013-2014 school year our programs reached over 7,000 children, families and professionals working with children. PinWheel Gardens PinWheel Gardens is a national initiative to raise awareness that children experience abuse in every community. April is National Child Abuse Awareness month and we encourage you to plant a pinwheel garden—learn how on our website. Break The Silence Kids speak out about abuse by telling their own stories in a video to empower students to get help for themselves or a friend in need. Program format includes engaging discussions and activities for kids in grades 5 and 6. Project Prevention: Rick Charette Rick Charette has partnered with the Child Abuse Prevention Council for over 25 years helping children to hear the message on Personal Body Safety with lyrics, script and puppets. This is a 50-minute concert for children in grades K - 3. Sing-a-long songs and engaging puppets teach young children about personal body safety. Project Empathy and Nurturing Relationships Puppets in a “Playground Pals” video will model empathy in four skits highlighting respectful behaviors, bullying prevention, and increasing accountability in personal and social interactions, includes review of personal safety rules . Students in grades K - 4 take part in role play and discussion. Project Prevention: No More Secrets Play A sensitive one-act play for elementary-school children addressing the difficult subject of child abuse through a blend of music, humor and acting. Baby Think It Over Grades 7-12 Baby Think it Over uses computer simulator “babies” to teach parenting and child abuse prevention skills to students ing rades 7 - 12. Adolescents learn about why nurturing and empathy are important skills, and the importance of never shaking a baby. 2 Parenting Programs Kids Free to Grow offers parenting programs in the community. We generally offer 2 - 4 classes in the Fall and again in the late winter/ early spring months. The parenting programs utilize the Active Parenting Now curriculum and Nurturing Parent Program which promotes healthy communication, the establishment of empathy in the parent and nonviolent ways of discipline. Summer Institute Kids Free to Grow Summer Institute is an intensive training that covers the topic of child abuse from a professional’s perspective. Mandated Reporter Training Training for a variety of groups who work with children, educating mandated reporters about the laws regarding reporting, how to report and why it is important to do so. t Financial Highlights October 1, 2012—June 30, 2013 Grants to support our programs are becoming even more difficult to secure and United Way dollars are spread more thinly throughout the community. Ten years ago, private donations made up only 10% of the council’s revenue; now private donations account for 27% of revenue. We are working hard to continue to maximize the impact of each dollar by decreasing overhead costs and increasing the percentage of each dollar that goes to program. Operating expenses were $133,033 for this fiscal year. 24352 31473 34088 3063 31110 374 Revenue October 2012 - June 2013 Grants Direct and Indirect Public Support 124460 Donations 25% Fund raising Interest Income 3% 27% 67960 29828 35245 133033 Program Income 0% 20% 25% Expenses October 2012 - June 2013 Management and General 22% Fundraising 27% Program Services 51% 3 Honor Roll of Giving October 1, 2012—June 30, 2013 The prevention of child abuse requires everyone’s involvement. Our efforts would be impossible without the generosity of so many individuals, businesses, services organizations, schools, churches, and municipal groups. We take this opportunity to gratefully acknowledge those people who have joined with us as a Partner in Prevention though their contributions both financial and in-kind.
