SomeƟmes when bishops are consecrated, they are
not given the care of a diocese as an “ordinary.” A very
old tradiƟon, however, assures that they are invested
with a “see,” a link with a local church. Many hundreds
of places around the world were dioceses at one Ɵme,
but are no longer. In England, for example, some of the
historic dioceses such as London, Salisbury, and
Manchester ceased to be Catholic at the ReformaƟon
and their cathedrals passed to the Church of England.
The reestablishment of the Catholic Church in the
nineteenth century meant that new dioceses had to be
created, such as at Liverpool and Westminster. Similarly,
in Scandinavia the ancient Catholic dioceses vanished
under Lutheranism. In North Africa, Ɵny dioceses
disappeared under the sands or were swept away by
Islam.
In the United States, some original dioceses never
really developed as populaƟon centers, such as the old
dioceses of Bardstown, Vincennes, Sault Ste. Marie, or
Walla Walla. The tradiƟon of “Ɵtular sees” assures that
the ancient churches are always held in prayer, as the
bishop celebrates Mass in its memory a few Ɵmes a year.

JULY 24, 2016
Dear Friends of the Augustinians,
Blessings to you all! Since my last bulletin article, Father John Ohner, O.S.A., has announced
his retirement as Pastor here at Our Mother of Good Counsel. I am grateful to Father John for faithful
service to this community and ask you to join me in thanking him for all that he has done here. Our
Province has nominated Fr. Joseph Broudou as the new Pastor here; I am pleased to announce that
Bishop Conlon has approved this nomination and appointed Father Broudou to be the next pastor!
Father Broudou will conclude his year as an Augustinian Novice on July 31 (see below); he is able to
begin serving as your pastor so quickly after joining the Augustinians because he already comes to us as
an ordained priest, serving in the Archdiocese of Omaha for many years before joining our Order.
I also want to thank you for welcoming our men in formation (seminarians) and Elizabeth
Mazur last month to speak to you about supporting our annual fund! If you have not yet received a
letter, please contact Elizabeth at [email protected] or 773-595-4009 and she will
mail one to you promptly. You can always contribute online at midwestaugustinians.org/donate.
Patrick Murphy will be speaking with you for the fourth year about our missions in Peru.
Thank you again for welcoming him back! We began our missionary efforts in Peru in 1963 at the
request of St. John XXIII, who asked American missionaries to evangelize Latin America. I am hopeful
that with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the required financial resources our missions need, our
Peruvian missions can become their own Augustinian Province by 2019! Your support in the appeal
will help us meet this goal!
Lastly, I invite all our parishioners please join us on July 31 as we witness our 11 Augustinian
Novices profess their first vows! To have 11 novices professing their vows is a blessing for our Order!
We would love it if a group of parishioners can join in celebrating the event. The professions will be at
St. Rita High School in Chicago on July 31 at 11am with lunch to follow. You can register online to
attend by visiting midwestaugustinians.org/events or you can call the Augustinian Advancement Office
at 773-595-4008.
Thank you again for all of your prayerful support of the Augustinians. Our Mother of Good
Counsel, pray for us!
Sincerely in Christ and St. Augustine,
Very Rev. Bernard C. Scianna, O.S.A., Ph.D.
Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians
