HAPPY NEW YEAR & HAPPY SAILING
The inaugural event of the Spetses Classic Yacht Race was held in 2011 in the picturesque homonymous island, in Greece.
In deference to Spetses’ naval history and tradition, for the first time in racing history, Aegean Classic Schooners raced alongside
Classic Yachts offering an unforgettable experience for both spectators and crews. To quote an onlooker “it was as if history came
alive in front of you”. The race, due to the hard work, diligence and skills of the Yacht Club of Greece (Race Organizer) and the
Poseidonion Grand Hotel (Hospitality Organizer), quickly gained loyal fans and by 2013 the number of participants rose to 65
Classic Yachts, Aegean Schooners and Lateens as well as countless of spectators and visitors who gather every June to admire
the breathtaking vistas and participate in the memorable event.
In 2013, the race made international headlines when crews were joined by five Olympic Sailing Gold Medalists (King Constantine,
former King of Greece, Odysseas Eskitzoglou, Giorgos Zaimis, Sofia Bekatorou and Lijia Xu) racing on board “Afroessa”. Chivas
Regal is the Gold Sponsor for the third consecutive year - rendering its unyielding support of this nautical institution which
celebrates the values of seamanship, authenticity, team spirit and excellence in a fairy tale setting.

AMALTHEA
Amalthea was commissioned by her Swiss owner to
take part in the Spetses Classic Yacht Race. She was
built by Pantelis Korakis, a local boat boatbuilder, in the
lines of the traditional varkalas from Hydra.
She has a lateen rig and she is 4.8 m of length. Up
until the last minute Pantelis Korakis and his team
worked around the clock to ensure that the beautiful
Amalthea would be ready for the Spetses Classic Yacht
Race!

AROKALI
My father, Ioannis Papadeas, built In 1977 a boat in
Ermioni. She had a length of 3,70m, a beam of 1,60m
and was built for fishing.
In 1986 an engine was installed and the, then, “Agios
Nikolaos” was used for octopus fishing.
From 1994 until 2008 she was neglected and the lack
of maintenance resulted in her sinking in the muddy
waters of the old port of Spetses.
In 2010 she was hauled out of the water and because
of the amount of work needed for reconstruction, it
was “head or tails” whether she would be burnt or
rebuilt.
In 2012 the shipwright Stavros Mandragos with a lot
of personal work along with friends and me, finally
reconstructed her.
This resulted in creating the traditional lateen
AROKALI, her name inspired by the initial letters of the
names of my family.
First Place, Open Boats/Traditional Lateen Category

BACCARA
Baccara, was designed by Sparkman & Stephens of
New York, world famous America’s Cup designers in
1968, and built for a famous international yachtsman
and racer. The boat was built in Germany and was one
of the first large aluminum yawls, at 72 feet. She was
originally campaigned by her owner in numerous New
England and Long Island Sound races. The yacht also
competed in four Newport-Bermuda races, where she
consistently came in as first to finish, and set several
time records for the Atlantic crossing. She raced equally
as well in seven Southern Ocean Racing Circuits.
Designed to be a family cruising/racing boat, Baccara
was quite heavy for competitive racing and always
required strong winds. Thus, the owner increased
substantially the size of the mizzen mast to give her
increased sailing power and speed.
In 1977, Baccara sailed from the U.S.A. to Greece and
competed in the Aegean Rally, where she distinguished
herself by being in the top 3 to finish each of the legs
of the race and overall winner. She crossed the Atlantic
several more times to compete in races in the U.S.A.
until she retired in Greece.
In 2010, the owner extensively refurbished the boat and
upgraded the sails, electronics, and navigation systems.
Making her into a cruiser thus ending her racing career.
She has been in the possession of the original owner
since her construction.

BOLERO
The Bolero was built in Holland in 1994 by Camara
Marine and Vitters Shipyard from a design that was
conceptualised by Spyros M.Polemis and Ed Dubois.
Spyros Polemis loved the classic lines of the early
twentieth century sloops but also believed in the lighter
construction of the fibre glass hulls of the modern day.
The Bolero was built as part of a series of four boats
with various keel length, deck and mast fittings.
The concept was to develop a class of yacht that
could be used for easy leisure day sailing but also
for racing with a crew of three. All the boats in the
series were built to high quality of dutch specification
and workmanship, while also benefiting from the vast
experience in design by Ed Dubois.
The combination of the classic lines with the light
structure make a great combination for sailing. The
boat was brought to Greece in 1998 but was only
recently placed in the water in 2009 to sail mainly
as part of the yacht club of Andros (NOA) in Chora,
Andros. The yacht has to travel a big distance to
participate in the Spetses Classic Yacht Race but the
crew enjoy being part of a race with other similar
classic yachts.
Second Place, Classic Yachts/Spirit of Tradition Category

CASSIOPEIA
CASSIOPEIA took her name from the famous
constellation and the Ethiopian Queen Cassiopeia
from the myth of Perseus and Andromeda.
She was built, entirely out of teak, at the Meroni
shipyard in Italy in 1965.
Her first owner participated in numerous classic yacht
races in the Mediterranean, and was awarded
a numerous distinctions.
For her present owner it was “love at first sight” and
thus she arrived at the Argolic Gulf in August 2012
flying the Greek flag.
With great joy and anticipation she will participate in
the Spetses Classic Yacht Race for the first time in the
hope that she will remain part of this festive event for
years to come.
Winner, Best Dressed Crew, Classic Yacht Category
TIP: You will recognize her by her spinnaker with the
figure of Queen Cassiopeia sitting on her throne.

CIRCE
Circe was built in Norway in 1915.
She is Gaff Rigged Ketch and is 19.5 metres on deck.
She was originally built to transport general cargo
between Norway, Denmark and Sweden. She is of a
very strong, traditional construction.
Converted to a private yacht in Denmark during the
1950’s by a Canadian entrepreneur.
Circe cruised and chartered in Mediterranean waters
for many years before undergoing another restoration
in the 1970’s.
A complete rebuild, lasting seven years, was started in
2006 by the current owner and finished few weeks ago.
All timbers have been replaced. New mechanical and
electrical systems installed and all rigging replaced.
Today Circe is ready for race and charter.

EFI
Efi is a 24m traditional “karavoskaro” (one of the many
types of Greek caiques), built at the Psarros shipyard
in 1964.
She carries 4 crew and has four double berth cabins.
She was originally built for captain G. Latsis (ex Mary
G) and she is the only one left from a series of boats
called “Alkyonides”.
She’s been characterized as a traditional boat
and is also used for chartering.
For the last 17 years she belongs to my family
and we’ve been maintaining her at great cost
and a lot of work.
Her interior was renovated to meet modern standards.
You can see her specifications and photos at
www.efi.gr
A few years ago, during the first traditional boat race,
from Makronisos to Kea, she was awarded the first
prize.

ELIANA K IV
The Eliana K-IV is a stunning blue modern classic
whose traditional appearance and sweeping lines
contrast with her uncluttered teak decks and racinginspired equipment. Built in 1995, she is yawl rigged and
boasts an 82-foot LOA with only 8.5-foot fin-keeled
draft.
A vessel of outstanding sailing capability and
uniqueness, she was designed and built for global
circumnavigation by her first (and only) owner, before
finding her home port in Crete, where she now lies
year-round, in the loving hands of an architect-sailor
who fully appreciates her qualities and annually
spends months cruising and racing her personally.
The interior, which benefits from period-style skylights
and portholes, is a superb example of English
craftsmanship providing a feeling of elegance from a
bygone age.
47
ENDEAVOUR
Endeavour started her life as a naval life boat built out
of teak in 1936. It was converted by its current owner an Englishman- into a sailing ketch in 1976.

ended up in Spetses where she has spent the last
15 years.

at the A.H.Moody & Son Ltd. shipyard
in Southampton England, in 1965, according to the
specifications, and under the supervision of Lloyd’s
(100 A1) who nominated her as the best constructed
boat of the year under 50 feet.
To his family’s desperation, her first owner sailed her
every summer from England to Cyprus and back,
nonstop. Her second owner, a Scot Captain, who later
became a farmer, was shipwrecked in the Pacific
Ocean, along with his wife and four children, when an
killer whale attacked and sunk their two masted boat
with which they planned to circumnavigate the world.
They were rescued, surviving on a raft for 37 days.
Their adventure -“Survive the Savage Sea”- became a
best seller and later a movie, thus enabling him to buy
Larne and cruise the Greek seas for 6 months a year.
LARNE has been in the hands of her present owner
since 1987, and Stavros Mandragos and Dimitris
Kavalaris have contributed to her excellent condition.

SAGITTARIUS
SAGITTARIUS, an Allan Buchanan design, was built
at STIBBINGS SHIPYARD in Burnham on Crouch
and was launched in 1966.
The gentleman who commissioned her changed his
mind before her completion and she was bought by
the Argyriadis family.
The boat came to Greece and her owner, Doros
Argyriadis, sailed on her the Greek Seas.
During the 80s, Ion Argyriadis took over her, raised the
Greek flag, and brought her to the South of France
where she was lying.
Along with his wife Catherine, SAGITTARIUS crossed
the Atlantic Ocean twice, to Puerto Rico and Cuba,
and the Mediterranean Sea from Spain and the
Balearic islands, to Sardinia and the Turkish coast.
In 1987 she participated in the Transmed Race from
Toulon to Gibraltar where she took line honours.
SAGITTARIUS returned to Greece where she is presently
lying and sails with the family the Aegean Sea.
TIP: You can recognize her by the small blue seahorse,
curved on her bows.
57
SALANA
SALANA was built in 1959 in Sweden. She was designed
earlier by the renowned Swedish yacht designer Erik
Salander for a member of the Swedish Court, hence
the Royal Crest she carries in her interior.
But for her rig and deck, she‘s built entirely out of
mahogany.
She was found in 2006 in Cephalonia in a very poor
condition and from 2006 to 2009 she went through a
complete renovation done by a shipwright from Syros
Island and her owner.
Recently the English magazine “Classic Boat” classified
SALANA as one of the top 300 Classic boats in the
world.

STEELHEAD
STEELHEAD is a One Off sloop built in 1982 by
Mr.Putsay, a British officer and RAF pilot who later
joined the Royal Navy.
It took Mr.Putsay and his wife five years to build her
out of timber they had bought and kept in their yard
for six years to dry.
She was built by the river Hamble, close to
Southampton.
The name STEELHEAD derives from a kind of trout
that can be found mostly in Canada and has the
ability to adjust in all kinds of waters, cold, warm, sea
and freshwater.
Based on the same philosophy, the Patsay family
prepared STEELHEAD to be fuel and freshwater
autonomous for long voyages in the Mediterranean
Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
She’s been sailing with Dimimtris Pandeleimonitis as
her captain since 1988 and their first journey was from
Larnaca, Cyprus, to Piraeus.
Since her arrival in Piraeus, she’s part of the Yacht Club
of Greece’ fleet.

AGIOS GEORGIS (St’ George)
Our caique, the AGIOS GEORGIS, was built in 1975 by
Dimitrios Bouris, a Spetsiot shipwright with local timber.
She belonged to the Spetsiot Dimitrios Kaloskamis and
named “DAGIM” (the initials of the first names of his
family: Dimitrios, the husband, Argyro, the wife, Georgios,
Ioannis and Minas, the children) and was used as
professional fishing boat.
In 1989 Panagiotis Mathios bought her and renamed
her AGIOS GEORGIS.
Since then, the Mathios family use her as a pleasure
boat for sailing, fishing and swimming.
The first time AGIOS GEORGIS participated in the
Spetses Classic Yacht Race in 2012 she won the first
day of racing.
They also received the trophy for the “Best Crew

AGANTA
AGANTA is a typical Hydriot boat design.
These boats were used mainly for sponge fishing and
their overall length didn’t exceed 7m.
The characteristics of the Hydriot “varkalas” are its
light construction and shallow draft, very useful for
shallow water fishing and light enough to beach.
Our boat was built in 1993 by the shipwright Costas
Krizinis in Kallipoli, Piraeus and named “Eleftheria”
(Freedom).
In 2000 we renamed her AGANTA, and installed a
traditional lateen rig designed by Zoupas in Pasalimani,
with a pine wood mast and antenna.

ENA
ENA is a traditional, 15,5m, trehandiri that was
“modernized” with great care and respect for Greek
naval tradition while reclaiming hi-tech adjustments
with the outmost respect for the environment.
The trehandiri is a very old, purely Greek design.
ENA was built in 1961 at the Psarros shipyard in
Perama commissioned by some French gentlemen
who called her “AVENTURE 2”. She was one of three
identical trehandiris built at the time for recreation and
sailing. They used her for cruising the French Riviera.
In 2008, almost 50 years later, she returned to the
Psarros shipyard where she was rebuilt.
Changes were made to her interior. An innovative
interior layout (cellular) was designed by Lykourgos
Ornerakis (Industrial Designer) and Evangelia Karatza
(Architect) taking, harmoniously, advantage of the
spaces that are formed by this type of hull.
This resulted in comfort, good ventilation, natural
lighting, good ergonomics and a positive feel, in her
interior and on deck. All works were done at the
shipyard of Yannis Lekkas in Kilada, Argolis.

ships who have been sailing the Argosaronic Gulf since
the 19th century.
However MARIDA is special.
She is an integral part of the efforts in the revival of
the traditional Spetsiot fishing boats. She, relentlessly,
continues the long boat building tradition of Spetses
and contributes to the preservation of this unique
wooden boat building art of the island. She, actively,
reinforces the efforts of the Spetsiot boat builders to
continue their craft, building these handmade beautiful
boats and lets the traditional Spetsiot boat yards - who
have been recognized by the Ministry of Culture as

first owner, chose to name his wooden “trehandiri” that
was built in Spetses at the Belesis shipyard in 1971.
Anastasios Christopoulos, being an architect, was
actively involved in her design and construction, creating
a beautiful traditional boat with carved mahogany
superstructure, polished brass fittings and a full rig.
Her present owner, Georgios Christopoulos, son of
Anastasios, under the supervision of his father, continues
the family tradition of perfectly preserving her and so
she retains her seaworthiness, traditional lines, polished
brass fittings and varnishing!
Having the Nautical Club of Kalalamaki as her
base, PARALOS has sailed the Aegean and Ionian

FANEROMENI
The “PERAMA” type of boats were the cargo ships
before ferries existed and carried supplies to the
islands.
FANEROMENI was built in Skiathos in 1945 by the
renowned shipwright Giorgos Mitilinaios and she is one
of the last “PERAMAs” that were built.
It took her present owner, her 7th, three years to
gradually restore FANEROMENI with utmost respect
to tradition.
Pachos Papastefanou, a renowned shipwright who
came from Smyrna, along with his son Giorgos, played
a major role in her restoration.
FANEROMENI has sailed all over Greece and during
a very moving trip, her owner set a goal to meet all of
her her six previous owners, from the Black Sea to the
Dalmatian Coast.
FANEROMENI has passionately participated in the
Spetses Classic Yacht Race since its inception.

owner in Aegina, between 2003 and 2004, by the
experienced shipwright Nikos Daroukakis.
She is a semi open sailing boat inspired by the
Hydriot “varkalas” with a spacious deck and no

The timber used for her construction is, mahogany
for the planking, White American Oak for the keel
the backbone and deck beams, teak on ply for the
deck, teak gunwales and bulwarks, marine plywood
for the bulkheads and the deck base, Oregon Pine for
the spars and oars, and a type of spruce (Northern
European Fir) for the mast and the antenna.
The “West System”, method was used for her planking,
using epoxy bonded 30x18 mm strip planks, nailed with
brass nails. The initial thought was to use CHRYSOPIGI
as a daysailer, for fishing and coastal camping. However
she proved to be a robust, fast and safe boat and easy
to handle her junk sail single handed.
She has sailed more than 2000 miles, single handed,
in the open Aegean Sea from Aegina to Donousa and
Amorgos in seven circular and adventurous voyages,
offering joy, fatigue and spiritual relaxation to her
owner.
