LIGHT OBJECT Six Design Proposals for Orrefors Second year Master Students in Product Design Light Object Six Design Proposals for Orrefors by Second year Master Students in Product Design Project during autum semester 2010 Exhibited at Orrefors, January 2011-01-14 INTRODUCTION The project Light Object is a creative exercise in product design in a realistic context from a branding and marketing perspective. It is part of the course Design Work, Advanced Studies I. The aim was that students should gain insight into the business perspective of product development by reflecting on the relationship between brand and product and commercial success. The students were given the task to develop a design proposal in the product category Light Objects under given conditions, such as brand, target group and price point. The selected brand was Orrefors. Linnaeus University’s vision is to operate in its vicinity. The exercise included a short introduction to glass in a craft workshop and visits to the glass works of Kosta and Orrefors. Lectures on Orrefors design history in general and design work from a personal perspective was given by me, the groups tutor but also long term designer at Orrefors. There was a seminar with representatives from Orrefors Kosta Boda’s marketing department and meetings with product development staff in Orrefors. The presentation was held in Orrefors and several representatives from the company took part in commenting the proposals. The seemingly simple task of designing giftware in glass is actually quite complex. The product itself does perhaps not look very complex, but the process is. As well as relating to brand values, price points, terms of production and functionality etc, a designer working in this field of consumer products also needs to develop an understanding of emotional values and has to be able to create strong expressions. In short, to create a small piece of art under very limited circumstances. Through sketch work and discussions the students were encouraged to develop Light Objects in their own personal design style, constantly relating to the demanding brand values of Orrefors and the not less demanding price points in this product category. Quotes that still hang in the air include: Go for happy and A little bolder please and of course Mies van der Rohe’s famous quote God is in the details. All students created design proposals that show very good understanding of the different fields of knowledge included in this exercise. Comments during the presentation by representatives from Orrefors were very positive; the students’ interpretations of brand values and their design proposals were well received. The Linnaeus University wishes to thank Orrefors Kosta Boda for generously sharing the company’s view on brand work and product development, especially Malin Ljungström and Lars Westman. Erika Lagerbielke Professor, Designer [email protected] www.lnu.se RAN Jonas Forsberg RAN My inspiration for this project started off when I saw some pictures depicting the Chinese Ghost festival where floating lanterns are used in order to commemorate ancestral spirits. There was just something truly fascinating seeing all those lanterns forming small clusters of light on a pitch black water surface knowing that each and every dot represented a lost loved one. I just found the whole thing very moving and beautiful and from this an urge to make a votive that could float started to grow. Since another passion of mine is architecture I really wanted to make something that could be stacked since this opens up a whole array of display possibilities. This in turn awakes the hidden city planner that lives inside of me, and hopefully many others, to build playful glass structures. There is of course also the added bonus of less space needed when stored which is always appealing in a world were shelf space is considered a valuable commodity. The votives on display are all mouth blown utilizing the areas long standing tradition when it comes to glass making every piece truly hand crafted and unique. My design is a careful concoction of tradition and innovation blended in a product that I have named after the goddess of the deep seas in Nordic Mythology namely Ran. Jonas Forsberg [email protected] FLOWER Linda Molander FLOWER Flower is a unique piece of glass, a slender and shiny votive for the Orrefors’ Collection. Bring it as a gift to friends and loved ones to show your appreciation, gratefulness and care. Enjoy together the dancing movement and let the light and its beautiful reflections spread. Remember spring is not only seasonal, it is emotional too. So embrace this co-creation and light up life. Available in clear glass as well as an array of five different colors, the use of Flower is offering a wide range of combinations: the more the merrier. In addition Flower is stackable which is both functional, and a refined aspect of decoration. Measure: Height: 35 mm Width: 150 mm Many thanks to Linnæus University, Erika Lagerbielke, Sia Mai, Micke Johansson, Bergdala Studioglas and last but not least Orrefors. Linda Molander [email protected] WA Rika Karakami WA The word “WA” has several different meanings in Japanese language. Two most common letters and their meanings are as follow: 和(wa):①“Japanese“ in styles and esthetics. ②Harmony in relationships. 輪(wa): Ring(s), circle(s),loop(s),hoop(s) or counter for wheels. The east meets the west - Although votive is found at most homes in Scandinavia, and every Scandinavian person knows its function as tea-light holder. They could be some mysterious glass objects from Sweden in the other side of the world. Where there is no tradition of using candles on the dinner table. Sub-functions of votive are more appreciated there. Multifunctionality - Japanese KAKI* vase would be a suggestion for sub-function emphasis. That could potentially be appreciated in both Swedish and Asian market. Since oriental/exotic style for home seems still fairly trendy in Sweden, and small decoration with some Scandinavian touch would be appreciated in the East. *KAKI is a Japanese word refers “flower vessel” in IKEBANA. ( Japanese flower arrangement invented for tea-ceremony) In IKEBANA, Flowers or plans are hold in KENZAN. (spiked holder in metal in the vessel) Simplicity, refinement and harmony with different environments are the characteristics I tried to encapsulate on this votive. Rika Karakami [email protected] STEPS Michael Karlsson STEPS My project is based on a vision to stretch the present votives and candle holders to something new and exciting, but still holding on to the traditional candles and tea lights. My goal by combining these two was to unite them in a product that will give you a choice, depending on which light source you want to use. The result STEPS is inspired by stairs at public spaces. The ledge that split up the different stair sections is found in the product where it separates the two ways of using it, one side for tea lights and the other one for candles. During the project was much time spent on finding a good balance between the two light sources by exploring production techniques. This gave me a bigger understanding on how I could stretch the idea and come up with a result that is possible but at the same time new and exciting. Making a product family was an important part of the project where I worked with creating something that could work as a family of several light objects. The inspiration became very useful where the steps became the identification of the family. Michael Karlsson [email protected] EIGHT Fredrik Palmblad EIGHT Eight, changes our perception of votives. As the market overflows, it becomes harder to be noticed and stand out from all the classics. Attempts to recreate and capture the feelings of candlelight’s with technology have failed. An electric light can never be the same as a candle light, no matter how hard it tries. Eight doesn’t pretend. The electric light gives Eight the unique feeling of something else, something new. It’s a mysterious light that suits the mystique of the glass material. The shape of Eight has a movement that wants to interact with more of the same. The balanced direction in Eight enables dynamic compositions. Due to its masculine minimalism, it is aimed for confident young men that want to reflect their passion for a high quality life and good taste. It is the perfect gift to friends and families that meets the mystique of Orrefors for the first time. The sharpness in the shape will also fit a confident corporation in order to enhance the feeling of non compromised quality services or products. About the future. In the concept of Eight, there is a strong aim for future discoveries. As Eight uses the advantage of technology, the light would not need a power source no more than the sun. Eight is thereby master of its own, although it wants to interact with the environment and other Eight’s. Together they can follow the light of the sun, or the movement in the music at a party. Eight is a friend that follows. The formal solution presents two modular pieces, a base and a ring. A simple to create your votive that expresses your taste and your feelings. The base is the main piece of votive “Switch “. The formal solution is inspired by classic candle of the past reinterpreted in a modern concept. It looks like a flattened cylinder with a central cylindrical cavity measurement standard, which is the accommodation of the candle. Decentralized, the polygon through the cylinder is the reinterpretation of the old hanger to grab the candle holder. A design that presents a formal solution that is aesthetic value and technical character. The aesthetic value is given by the clean lines, sharp, a simple design, which in its entirety remember the old style. The technical value is given by the polygon shape, its height and the converging lines to the outside of the cylinder. The polygon is an affordance and a block for the rings inserted in order to facilitate the composition and prevent sliding during transport. The realization of the base is through one-piece mold, the next processing is only the application of the logo. The rings are composed by a flattened cylinder. At the center is a cylindrical hole in size same to the cavity of the base for the candle. A clean cut that follows the shape of the polygon of the base, in order to fit perfectly with it. The physical composition of the rings is optional and can potentially make any color, decoration, shape, surface made in glass. From these features it is easy to imagine the creation of a collection of rings ready to be used whenever you want. The realization of the object is made by mold, the next processes are optional in order to the choice of aesthetics. The concept of collection could offer a new business to the company. If you consider the unlimited possibilities of personalization for the customer and the company, the same object (or a part) could be sold in different versions through time. The added value of votive “Switch” is his marketability through time, since it combines a simple shape that does not tire, an unlimited possibility to personalize both for the client and for the company with the concept of the collection.
