LIFEFLIGHT OF MAINE
LifeFlight will be there for you
While each day begins with the promise of a new sunrise and sunset, (in
Maine sometimes hidden in gray and
stormy skies) the time in between is
full of both the constants in our life—
family, work, school, friends—as well
as uncertainty. Life changes unpredictably and things fall apart.
understand what it really means to be “lifeflighted?” For the many
faces in this report it has meant going home to loved ones, returning
to work, returning to school and returning to our communities. Quite
simply it has meant a chance for the future.
In this, our fourteenth annual report to the people of Maine, (and
its visitors) we highlight not only the past year of LifeFlight service,
but more importantly some of the faces and stories of patients who
needed an uncertain world to become certain again.
We don’t think much about uncertainty. We don’t start off each
day with what can possibly go wrong. No one ever gets out of
bed in the morning planning to have a heart attack or stroke,
get in a car accident, miss the edge of the ski trail or fall down
the stairs. But each day all of these will happen to someone
somewhere in Maine and, in some cases, the moment of uncertainty will quite literally result in a life or death event.
In each of these uncertain moments, we need an immediate,
and often complicated, response from Maine’s emergency care
system—911 communications and coordination, public safety,
local rescue, EMS, hospital emergency departments, and major
trauma centers. Saving lives is a team effort. In the cases of the
most critically ill and injured patients, LifeFlight is the glue of
the team effort, linking the work of every member of the team
across the landscape. And each of us trusts that the team will
be there when needed.
Over the years, the media has adopted LifeFlight as a verb.
When we see the helicopters in photos or on television, do we

As you read through this report you will see folks from every corner
of Maine and you may recognize family, neighbors or friends. Each
of our patients and families has a unique story of what it means to be
“lifeflighted.” What all of these patients have in common is the need
for care that only LifeFlight brings. Their stories encompass every
age, from before birth to golden years, every type of critical illness or
injury, and every corner of Maine. We are proud that LifeFlight was
there, when needed and where needed, to fulfill the gift of trust.
As a non-profit charity, LifeFlight relies on your support to make sure
that we will be there when you need us, too.

This Annual Report is a publication of The LifeFlight Foundation, which provides fundraising and public relations support to LifeFlight of Maine, the state’s only medical
helicopter service. The LifeFlight Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax deductible. It is governed by an elected board of trustees who
represent medical, business, legal and educational fields throughout the state. LifeFlight also aids the development, training and funding of Maine’s major air medical
needs, such as trauma training statewide; construction of helipads; and installation of weather reporting, navigational and communications systems across the state.
The Foundation’s office is located in the town of Camden at 13 Main Street on the 2nd floor. We welcome visitors anytime.
LIFEFLIGHT OF M A INE
LifeFlight of Maine is a nonprofit statewide critical care medical helicopter service jointly owned by Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems and Central Maine Healthcare
Corporation. LifeFlight’s two helicopters, operated by Era Helicopters and based at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and Central Maine Medical Center in
Lewiston, cover the entire state and offshore islands. LifeFlight complements and supports the work of local EMS and hospital personnel in caring for the critically ill or
injured. LifeFlight is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.

of the St. John River when
he became critically ill and
had to be LifeFlighted from
Baker Lake to Eastern Maine
Medical Center.
ATV’er Cindy Annis was
riding her four-wheeler
in rural Hancock County
when she suffered a
critical injury and was
LifeFlighted from a remote
landing zone.
Snowmobiler Bonnie
Sancomb was enjoying the
recreational trails north of
Jackman when she suffered
a traumatic injury and was
LifeFlighted from the side of
the trail.

Portland teen Henry Stoddard was flown from the
Rangeley Airport to Maine
Medical Center after he
was seriously injured
while skiing with friends at
Saddleback.
Molly Mann, a teenager
from Camden, was seriously
injured while skiing at Sunday River when she tumbled
down a 25-foot ravine. She
continues her active lifestyle
today thanks to a quick flight
to Maine Medical Center.
Ski instructor Roland Bois
suffered a massive heart attack on the slopes of Sugarloaf. Thanks to a quick flight
to Central Maine Medical
Center, he was skiing again
just six weeks later.
Climbing enthusiast Neala
Fugere was bouldering in Acadia when she fell more than 30
feet to the rocks below. After a
massive rescue effort and flight
to Eastern Maine Medical Center, she made a full recovery.
3
The geography of time: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
technology not available in many of our
hospitals. LifeFlight is not only the bridge
between immediate and tertiary care, but a
direct extension of our major centers, Eastern Maine Medical Center, Central Maine
Medical Center and Maine Medical Center.
Increasingly we recognize that in many
ways LifeFlight has become Maine’s thirtyseventh hospital, bringing the care and technology of our trauma
tertiary centers directly to patients -- whether they are in one of our
hospitals, on the side of the road, in the woods or in their home.
For critically ill and injured patients, time and geography are
often more deadly than the actual injury or illness. Maine’s EMS
services and hospital emergency departments never close--caring for several hundred thousand patients a year. While
most patients can be cared for in their own community, many
need to be treated in our major centers. In the year ahead, over
1700 of these patients will require LifeFlight services. While that
number is small compared with all of emergency care, the care
required is not. Each of these patients has complex, time-critical disease needing specialized treatment in our major centers
in Maine, Boston or beyond. More importantly, they need that
tertiary care right away. A premature infant needs a specialized
transport system, a patient with total cardiac collapse needs an
external pump, critically ill and injured patients need ventilators, blood, laboratory testing, ICU monitoring and medicines.
These patients need LifeFlight.
To be “lifeflighted” is actually an incredibly complex combination
of time, technology and talent delivered across the landscape. The
result is not just lives and families saved but, more important in a
time of enormous challenges in healthcare, more cost efficient and
effective care. In 2013 LifeFlight will transport our 15,000th patient,
celebrate 15 years of service to Maine, and look forward continually
building a critical care system across time and geography 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year.
For these patients LifeFlight provides both immediate care,
as well as a bridge to our specialist physicians in cardiac and
trauma operating rooms; neonatal, pediatric and adult intensive
care units; invasive neuro-radiology suites; and transplant
centers. Without LifeFlight, the promise of our tertiary centers
is only realized for those who live in our urban centers. Without
LifeFlight, Main Street in Jackman does not have the same
access to care as Main Street in Lewiston, Congress Street in
Portland or State Street in Bangor. Without LifeFlight, time and
geography become predictors of survival.
Your support keeps LifeFlight and all of Maine’s hospitals and emergency care system there when needed.

CHARITY CARE
Since it began in 1998, LifeFlight of Maine has provided essential emergency care to nearly 15,000 patients in Maine,
regardless of their insurance or financial status. More than 30% of our patients did not have insurance in FY12,
and unpaid bills from uninsured and underinsured patients totaled more than $1.6 million.

Hands-On Training
EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
LifeFlight crew members provide ground safety courses to local rescue agencies on how to establish a landing
zone and how to interact safely with the aircraft and flight crew. In FY12, LifeFlight provided 25 ground safety
courses, from Houlton to Kennebunkport, Rangeley to Eastbrook. In addition to the EMS professionals at the
scene, dispatchers also receive LifeFlight training. In FY12, LifeFlight provided 2 communications courses to
municipal, county and state dispatchers.
HUMAN PATIENT SIMULATOR
The LifeFlight Foundation coordinates and supports the mobile Human Patient Simulator (HPS) program, a
customizable training experience using advanced computerized manikins. In FY12, LifeFlight began offering a series of
conferences focusing on treatment for critically ill and injured pediatric patients. The series, called Pediatric Patients on
the Edge, combines classroom lecture with the newest hands-on patient simulation technology. The intensive training
is developed especially for physicians and nurses.
In FY12, the HPS visited 29 facilities, bringing advanced training to 330 physicians, nurses, paramedics and
emergency medical technicians.
For details on any of LifeFlight’s training courses, call the Foundation at 207-230-7092.

AVIATION INFRASTRUCTURE
LifeFlight has established and expanded the network of aviation infrastructure in Maine over the last several years.
Today, this system is used as a national model for safe and effective air ambulance services. Staff at both the LifeFlight
Foundation and LifeFlight of Maine administer funds from state transportation bonds, which help towns and hospitals
build helipads, install new AWOS, and develop helicopter GPS approaches. Projects completed in FY12 include:
AWOS:
Belfast Municipal Airport (ceilometer)
Franklin Memorial Hospital, Farmington
Carrabasset Municipal Airport
Communications:
Rebuild statewide radio system
Helipads:
Planning work for new helipad at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital
Planning work for helipad at new MaineGeneral Medical Center campus in Augusta
REMOTE LANDING ZONE PROJECT
In emergency medicine, time is the overwhelming determining factor in a patient’s survival. So when the scene of an
accident is in a remote location, it presents an extra challenge to local paramedics. In an effort to improve response
time for scene calls involving remote snowmobile, ATV and recreational accidents, LifeFlight works with state and local agencies and clubs to establish landing zones along Maine’s extensive trail system. There were more than 13 new
landing zones established in FY12, including locations in Waldo, Hancock, Knox, Patten, Tim Pond Township, Eustis,
Coplin Plantation, Flagstaff Township, Summit Township and Great Spruce Head Island.
If you would like more information on the project, contact the Foundation at 207-230-7092. You can also visit www.
lifeflightmaine.org to download an informational brochure or register a new landing zone.

Being there: no matter who you are, no matter where you are
Ten years from no system to the best. Truly an example of our state’s
motto: Dirigo —I lead.
Ten years ago, recognizing the challenge of making sure LifeFlight is there for all of Maine, a group
of medical, business and education leaders came
together to create the nonprofit LifeFlight Foundation, quite literally establishing a foundation
underpinning LifeFlight.
The cornerstones of this support are state-of-the-art aircraft, aviation
infrastructure, medical technology and continuing medical education
across the entire emergency care system. In the past year, the Foundation has helped to purchase an external cardiac balloon pump, new
transport medication pumps, a second newborn transport isolette system and high-tech video assisted laryngoscopes. With public funding,
additional weather systems and instrument flight systems have been
put in place to increase safety.
When LifeFlight of Maine started in 1998, Maine was the only state in
the country without an air medical system. Our collective support—individual gifts of all sizes and donations from corporations, foundations
and hospitals—helps make sure that the system we depend on in our
time of need is there, reliably and safely. Whether on a mountain, in
a small rural town, a hospital, the woods or on the roads, LifeFlight is
there for us, in every corner of Maine. Private support, together with
public support of infrastructure—hospital and community helipads, instrument flight systems and weather stations—has resulted in LifeFlight
being named the top air medical organization in North America in 2008.
We are pleased that Maine is considered a model system—safe, reliable, cost effective, clinically appropriate—by national medical leaders as well as in aviation by the FAA and NTSB. But we are only part
way there. Increasingly, LifeFlight is running into resource challenges.
Our existing helicopters need replacement, we need additional
aircraft, and more all-weather capability.
As I read through this report and see some of the nearly 15,000
patients and families that LifeFlight has touched, I am struck that this
could be me. I could be one of these faces. As you read through this
report and perhaps find faces of family, friends or acquaintances, take
a minute to reflect on the challenge of making sure that LifeFlight will
be there when we need the unique care and capabilities that only
LifeFlight can bring to a time of critical need.
These patients and their stories inspire our Foundation Board, staff
and volunteers to work every day to make sure that LifeFlight is
there, when needed and where needed. Join us and make sure that
LifeFlight is there for you, when needed and where needed.

LifeFlight needs
DOUGLAS T. JONES, FACHE, PRESIDENT/CEO
DOWN EAST COMMUNITY HOSPITAL, MACHIAS
As a hospital executive I have always felt comfortable
recommending to our board of trustees that we make an
organizational gift of support to the LifeFlight Foundation.
LifeFlight routinely transports our patients and, being
two hours by land from Eastern Maine Medical Center, we
experience the lifesaving importance of an efficient, rapid
transport regularly.
The landing path brings the
aircraft directly over my office
and I always stop and think of
the individual benefit when
that icon of what is best about
medicine today flies in. I watch
with a sense of awe when the
helicopter and flight crew arrive in the dark of a winter night
and I know that there is a great organization behind them.
Over the course of my time at DECH, I’ve often witnessed the
crew’s consistently high level of professionalism, compassion
and care. After one such opportunity, in which I listened to
the pilot and crew speak of the helicopter like they were
the owners, and not just the operators, I decided to make a
personal donation to the organization.
For these folks this is certainly not a job. They are proud of
the mission, the opportunity to serve and of the training and
equipment they can bring to a critical situation anywhere in
Maine. I am very proud to support people like that!
