Not all Incise Drapes are alike…
Why use 3M Ioban Antimicrobial Incise Drapes?
TM
TM
Ioban 2 antimicrobial incise drapes reduce the
likelihood of skin recolonisation after prepping4,
and thus reduce the risk of wound contamination
by skin flora9, which is a common cause of SSI8.
A non-impregnated incise drape does not have
the iodophor active agent, but simply immobilises
the skin flora as it continues to grow throughout
the procedure.
All Ioban 2 antimicrobial incise drapes offer the following:
• Iodophor for sustained antimicrobial activity throughout the procedure.3
• A conformable film that adheres to body contours.10
• Breathable ensuring adhesion to the skin.11
Clinical Evidence - “Ioban; it just works”1
“
Ioban is an essential part
of a surgeon’s care bundle
to reduce the risk of SSIs
and creates a sterile field
not achievable by skin
preparation alone.
Following skin preparation
Ioban ensures the surgical
site is sealed and as the skin
sweats the drape stays in
place and the active agent
keeps working. 1
”
NICE guidelines for
prevention of SSIs also
recommend that ‘if an
incise drape is required, use
an iodophor impregnated
drape.’2
Ioban incise drapes are supported by clinical
evidence covering a variety of surgical
procedures and should be used following
preoperative skin antisepsis.
Once the skin prep is dry Ioban incise drapes
can be applied over any type of skin preparation
solution including multi use or single use
products and iodine or chlorhexidine based
solutions.
When comparing four methods of skin preparation the one minute painting with
seventy percent isopropyl alcohol and application of an Ioban incise drape was
more effective than the other regimes in delaying bacterial recolonisation.4
All four methods of skin preparation were effective in removing bacteria from
the skin surface however Ioban incise drapes were more effective than the other
regimens in delaying bacterial recolonisation.4
Clinical Evidence Summary Key Findings
All Ioban 2 antimicrobial incise drapes offer the following:
•Compared to three other incise drapes, Ioban incise drapes have a higher microbiocidal effect in vitro on a wide range of organisms including MRSA and MRSE3
•When comparing four methods of skin preparation, skin recolonisation was less after preparation with Ioban incise drapes during an in vivo trial on healthy volunteers’ skin4
•Ioban incise drapes reduce bacterial wound contamination in clean and clean contaminated surgeries5
•Ioban incise drapes have the potential to reduce surgical site infections as demonstrated in a retrospective study during liver resection surgery6
Cost Savings
“The financial burden of SSIs to the NHS is approximately £758 million
per year and cost per SSI approximately £2,100.”7
With greater surveillance this figure could be much higher and the impact on the
patient’s experience and recovery is also a key reason to use interventions which
will reduce the risk of SSIs during surgical procedures.
3M Ioban Drape Facts
TM
TM
•The development of Ioban drapes was a customer inspired innovation first launched in 1982
•Ioban drapes uniquely deliver iodine onto the patient’s skin in a controlled and effective manner
•Combined with a strong and fluid resistant adhesive, Ioban drapes provide a tight seal around the wound edge to stop the pathway of bacteria entering

by Mr Philip Roberts, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon1
•Ioban drapes protect and seal skin edges which is key during minimally invasive surgery
•Skin markings can be seen and maintained under Ioban drapes, ensuring wound edges are realigned perfectly. Better skin closure means less chance of an infection and improved appearance for the patient
•Use of Ioban drapes allows safe extension of the wound and allows you to cover large areas just in case you need to make further incisions
•Ioban drapes allow you to perform more accurate surgery as you can expose key landmarks rather than hiding them under a surgical drape
