Recognized with EMMC Eagle Award
The EMMC Auxiliary’s Seventh Annual Winter Beach
Ball, featuring the Tony Boffa Band, successfully raised
$25,000 this past January. Nearly 500 people showed up,
undaunted by cold winter weather. The Auxiliary is
thankful for strong, continued community support for
this annual event, rewarding our fundraising efforts for
local healthcare. We look forward to hosting next year’s
Winter Beach Ball at Cross Insurance Center and hope to
see you there.

The Gradual
Retreat of Winter
At the March Leadership Workout, Paula Hammond, RN,
supervisor, Cath Lab, proudly chose Paula Ballesteros, RN,
BSN, MSB, NE-BC, nurse manager, EMMC Rehabilitation
Center, as the newest Eagle award recipient.
All day long, the snow has been flying, but as I look out on the street, I am
seeing a miraculous thing. There is no shoveling to be done; the pavement is
warm enough that the snow is melting on contact. Hallelujah! This must mean
that Spring is coming! This time of year also brings reflection on the season
which is passing and optimism for the season waiting on our door step. The
changes are gradual. More daylight, warmer temperatures, less shoveling,
more mud, and (at least on my part) renewed energy for planning upcoming
Auxiliary events. Daylight Savings Time arrived on March 10th, so before we
know it, we will be putting out the lawn furniture, planting the peas and
looking forward to shorts and black flies. Just kidding about looking forward
to the black flies.
“From the time I started as a staff nurse on a 16 bed
women’s unit in the Blaisdell building until now, I have
always wanted to make sure our patients receive the best
care we could give,” explains Paula B. “I’ve always worked
to be involved in various committees at EMMC as well
as organizations at the state level to help influence how
healthcare is given and the patient experience is received.”
Paula B. has dedicated more than 40 years to ensuring
EMMC’s patients receive remarkable care. But it took only
one day—Paula H’s first day at EMMC—to know there was
something special about EMMC’s newest Eagle award recipient. “I still remember Paula being one of the first people
to welcome me to the EMMC family,” says Paula H. “She
is the epitome of professionalism and she has the utmost
integrity of anyone I know.”
Reflecting on our work over the last few months, the Auxiliary’s efforts have
been outstanding and there is much to highlight in this newsletter. Here is a
snapshot of what we have been up to.
In October, we hosted the Eighth Annual Kitchen Tour, featuring seven
magnificent homes in the greater Bangor area. Mother Nature provided us
with a perfect day for this event and through sponsorships and ticket sales, the
Auxiliary raised $10,595—a good time was had by all!
“Getting this prestigious award meant a lot to me as a long
time manager at EMMC” adds Paula B. “It is definitely a
humbling experience to be recognized by another leader
as modeling those characteristics of the Eagle award. It was
very exciting and shocking for me and makes me want to
strive to do more. I love working at EMMC because it has
been a very progressive organization with a commitment
to safe, quality patient care, and a well-trained and engaged

In November, the Auxiliary Annual Meeting was held at Wellman
Commons. We were honored to feature two outstanding speakers for our
lunchtime program, Anita Peavey Haskell and Allen L’Italien, RN. Among
many outstanding achievements, Anita Peavey Haskell is recognized as the
lead donor for the establishment of the Raish Peavey Haskell Children’s
Cancer and Treatment Center. With a long, dedicated history at EMMC,
Allen now serves as the Executive Director of CancerCare of Maine. Anita and
Allen were able to give all of us a picture of the importance of the Auxiliary’s

Tristine Currie is the branch manager for Machias
Savings Bank in Bangor. Originally from Fort Kent, she moved
to Orono when still in high school and later attended the
University of Maine. She joined the banking world with Wells
Fargo in 1998 while living in Florida and continued her career
in banking upon returning to Maine to start a family. Tristine is
passionately committed to community service and her
decision to volunteer for the Auxiliary Board came easy when
she learned of our commitment to the Raish Peavey Haskell
Children’s Cancer and Treatment Center. Prior to joining the
Auxiliary in 2012 she has served in many capacities on the
board of the American Heart Association and over the past
five years held a leadership role with the Chi Omega Sorority
at University of Maine. Most recently, Tristine has been elected
as the vice president of Tuesday Forum women’s networking
organization. She resides in Bangor with her husband and son.
CarolAnne Dube is the director of advancement at
Eastern Maine Community College and executive director of
the EMCC Foundation. With past experience as an LPN and
business owner, and after graduating from the University of
Maine at Fort Kent with a degree in business management, she
began another professional career fifteen years ago as director
of community relations at Northern Maine Medical Center.
Along the way, CarolAnne discovered a passion and talent for
fundraising and recently finished a graduate degree program in
Strategic Fundraising and Philanthropy. Now she can’t imagine
a better profession. She currently volunteers as a member of
the board of directors for Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center and Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary, as well as serving as
president of the Bangor chapter of the National Association of
Professional Women. She enjoys spending her free time with
her husband and their grandchildren.
Lauren Applebee is a full time real estate broker with
ERA Dawson Bradford, gifted with an eye for detail. She lists
and sells residential properties, as well as specializing in new
construction. She and her husband of thirty years both grew up
in the Bangor area. After living in Florida and Tennessee for a
while, they returned to Maine where they settled down
permanently and raised their family. They now share the joy of
two granddaughters. Lauren has been actively involved in
volunteering and fundraising activities for various
organizations ever since her high school years and is a very
passionate supporter of literacy and healthcare programs.
In her leisure time Lauren loves to turn her attention to
cooking, quilting, reading, gardening, and getting together
with her family and friends at “Camp Applebee” for fun times.
The EMMC Auxiliary continues to benefit from the sales at
the EMMC Gift Shop and, as always, shopping there supports
services for patients at EMMC.

fundraising efforts for EMMC Cancer Care and the new
Pediatric Oncology Program. Their presentations were
inspiring as well as informative; I listened with a lump in
my throat. The EMMC Auxiliary stepped up last year as a
major donor to the Heroes, Hope and Healing Campaign
with a pledge of $350,000 to support the Pediatric Cancer
Fund and the EMMC Raish Peavey Haskell Children’s
Cancer Care and Treatment Center. In recognition of our
pledge commitment, Board members attended the
December 2012 opening and dedication ceremonies.
Soon after the wrap-up of the Kitchen Tour, Board
members turned their attention to the details of hosting
the Seventh Annual Winter Beach Ball with the Tony
Boffa Band. Held in January 2013, the weather was frightfully cold but didn’t stop nearly 500 people from turning
out in summer clothes to laugh and dance the night away,
raising $25,000 for the Auxiliary!
Planning for the Spring Membership Meeting is
underway; watch your mailbox, the Auxiliary website
and our Facebook page for updates. We are already
organizing our initial Committee meetings to strategize
and get ready for this year’s Kitchen Tour and the next
Winter Beach Ball.
We’ve welcomed three new talented and dedicated
women to the Auxiliary Board, Tristine Currie,
CarolAnne Dube and Lauren Applebee and we continue
to work on growing our general membership.
Yes, we’re busy and all in the name of service to the
Auxiliary mission and a collective desire to make a
difference in the community in which we live. On behalf
of the Board, I thank all of you Auxiliary members who
work with us and support our gift shop and fundraising events. Together, we really are stronger. In the words
of Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world;
indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
Happy Spring!
