planning is already underway. Committees for
both fundraisers will be forming and starting to
meet soon.

EMMC Auxiliary’s Winter Beach Ball
Rocked It Again!
Thanks to good weather on the night of January 17, it was easy traveling to the
EMMC Auxiliary’s Eighth Annual Winter Beach Ball this year. It turns out
Bangor’s new Cross Insurance Center was the perfect venue for our Beach Ball.
It provided more room for dancing, beautiful décor, and served delicious food.
Nearly 500 people danced the night away to the music of The Larry Williams
Band as they enjoyed pretending they were in a much warmer climate, even if
only for a few hours.
In the end, the best part of the evening was the fact that nearly $18,000 was
raised for our pledge to the EMMC Raish Peavey Haskell Children’s Cancer
and Treatment Center. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported our
efforts to benefit the healthcare needs of children in our local community.
Also, special thanks is extended to all our sponsors, especially our hors
d’oeuvres sponsor, Cianbro.

Cindy Curran - Dirigo 106 Kayak from Old Town Canoe ( Fun Note:
Ginger Ward-Green wanted to win the kayak so badly, Cindy gave
it to her!)
Melissa has been working in the non-profit sector for over ten
years, and has served as the membership chair of the Maine
Career Development Association. When considering becoming
more involved in her community, the decision to volunteer for the
Auxiliary Board was an easy conclusion for her. She is excited to be
joining the Auxiliary Board and volunteering for our community
hospital. Melissa and her husband Mike live in Dedham with their
dog Piper.
Nancy Long was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland.

Auxiliary
A Note from the President
On Moving
S
hortly after moving to Maine in 1987, I became a
lifetime member of the Auxiliary of Eastern Maine
Medical Center. It has turned out to be money well
spent. This dynamic organization of over 200
members is composed of some of the most interesting,
hardest working, and fun people I know. The
opportunity to serve on the board of directors only
multiplies the bonuses.
This year, I am honored and excited to be your Auxiliary
president, following in the footsteps of our wonderful past
president, Ginger Ward-Green. Her guidance and support
will be invaluable this year.
Your input and suggestions are always welcome and I
would love to hear from you. I hope you will get involved
in whatever way you can this year, and that you will
consider inviting a friend to join—first year memberships
are free!
In this issue of the Auxiliary News, you’ll meet our new
board members and hear what the Auxiliary has been up
to and what lies ahead as we work to support EMMC and
help our region in very tangible ways.
Our pledge to the EMMC Raish Peavey Haskell Children’s
Cancer and Treatment Center is our latest in a long line of
community pledges. To support this, planning is already
underway for our Tenth Annual Kitchen Tour in
September. Always a fun event, the Kitchen Tour promises
to be extra special this year. In May, we’ll have a general
membership meeting with a great guest speaker, and on
August 16, for the fourth year, we’ll walk as a team at
EMMC Champion the Cure Challenge. These are just
some of the things that we’ll be doing. Stay tuned for more
details, and please join us as we work to achieve our goals
and continue to make a difference in healthcare and in
our community.
Please contact me anytime at [email protected]
or 941-0819.
Best wishes, think spring!

Ninth Annual
KitCHEN
and home
tour
Saturday, October 5,
2013 was a beautiful
fall day for friends and
neighbors to get out and participate in the 9th Annual EMMC
Auxiliary Kitchen Tour. This special event draws people from
as far away as Aroostook county and Waterville, many of
whom look forward to attending each year. It is a chance to see
fabulously designed kitchens in brand new homes or renovated
older homes in various towns and neighborhoods. There is a
unique feel to each kitchen and something special to take note
of such as a “special” butcher block that was used by Dad in his
business; or a particular tile backsplash; or chandelier lighting
that was found in a small shop on the coast of Maine.
Participants also often get to tour other parts of the homes,
as well, to see how the owners decorate throughout with their
personal styles.

Nursing scholarships were awarded to four deserving Husson
University nursing students: Lauren Raymond Papa, Manda
Duke, Noelle Braley, and Keyleigh Bennett. Sherry Roberts,
acting Education Committee chair, presented each with a
$1,000 check.
Ginger Ward-Green, Auxiliary president; Lauren Papa, Manda Duke, Noelle Braley,
Keyleigh Bennett, Husson students; Beth Clark, Husson faculty; Sherry Roberts,
EMMC Auxiliary member.
This past year, there were six lovely homes on the tour.
Beautiful flower arrangements custom designed by Chapel
Hill Floral accented each kitchen and yummy samples of food
and beverages were available to sample and buy. Thanks to:
The Maine Cookie Kitchen; Savage and Sons Coffee; Oats Any
Time; Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause; Di’s Delectables; and
Specialty Sweets.
You won’t want to miss it!
Annual Meeting Highlights
EMMC Auxiliary’s Annual Meeting was held on November
7, 2013 at Seasons in Bangor. The Rev. Rex Garrett gave the
Invocation, and a delicious lunch was served. President Ginger
Ward-Green introduced the guest speakers, Deborah Carey
Johnson, President and CEO of EMMC, and Joe D’Antuono,
Senior Manager of the EMMC Modernization Project. Auxiliary members saw a slide presentation about the project and
were updated on the hospital’s plans and progress. When completed, state of the art improvements will include new private
patient rooms, bigger and better operating suites and a new
women’s and infants floor.
Outgoing Board members Ann Marie Orr and Danelle Weston
were recognized for their service to the Auxiliary. New Board
members were introduced--Nancy Long and Susan Nasberg,
both of whom are returning Board members. Gift Shop
Volunteers were recognized for their service.
In what has become an annual tradition, the EMMC Auxiliary
provided gifts to all inpatients at EMMC on Christmas Day.
Bags containing 2013’s gift, a pocket organizer, were delivered to the
inpatient units by Auxiliary members. Front L-R: Melissa Hayward.
Volunteer Associate and Student Program Coordinator; Ginger
Ward-Green, outgoing president; Paula Ballesteros, board member.
Back L-R: Eileen Hernandez, incoming president; Martha
Wildman, EMMC Auxiliary Liaison.
“Our mission is to support the hospital and its patients,” says
Eileen. “We want to make patients’ stay in the hospital a bit
happier during this time of year. Anything we can do to make
their stay better over the holidays is important.”
Look for our Tenth Annual Kitchen Tour Celebration this fall.
