Joseph: The Journey from Prison to Palace
Vacation Bible School Summer 2016
Please make sure you have marked your
calendar for Hosanna's upcoming Vacation
Bible School. We will be venturing to Egypt as
we learn about Joseph and his journey from
prison to palace! VBS will be taking place
from Monday, June 20th - Friday, June 24th.
Registration materials will be available later
this spring.
VBS Decorating Dates
Are you interested in assisting with the
creation of decorations for this summer's
Vacation Bible School (Joseph: The Journey
from Prison to Palace)? This year, Hosanna
will be hosting a decorating week to help with
the making of these decorations. Individuals
may come to Hosanna and work on creating
decorations at a time that works best for them.
Check your calendars for open times during
the week of May 23rd - May 26th and watch
for more specific information in the month
ahead.
Sunday School Carnival
This year's Sunday school carnival will be held
on Sunday, May 22nd. A pizza lunch will follow
the 10:30 worship with the carnival starting
after lunch. Come enjoy the fellowship, food
and fun carnival games!
Family Promise Rochester
(Previously IHN)
Donations Being Accepted
The Sunday school team will be collecting
personal hygiene items during April/May to be
donated to Family Promise Rochester. Items
being collected (for men and women) include:
deodorant, shampoo/conditioners, body
washes, shaving cream and shavers.
Additional items include: q tips, hair brushes,
lotions, and baby products (hair & body wash).
A specific need would include hair products for
African American hair. Products will be
accepted from Sunday, April 10th - Sunday,
May 15th.
Book Discussion
April 16
The book discussion group meets on the 3rd
Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. Coffee is
on and members take turns bringing treats.
The book to be discussed in April is All the
Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. All
are invited to join in the discussion of this
book which tells the gripping story of a blind
French girl on the run from the German
occupation, who crosses paths with a
German orphan-turned-resistance tracker.
It’s the story of two ordinary children, two of
thousands swallowed up in a conflict they
had nothing to do with, and how their lives
are connected and forever changed by
World War II. You may contact Barb

is The Chinese Chef by Nicole Mones.

Safety Tips From the
Safety and Security Team
Hosanna continues to provide safety and
security training for staff and volunteers that
work with children/youth on a regular basis.
To that end, one of the safety tips that is
emphasized in this training is:

to be held at Hosanna Lutheran Church, 2815

2016 from 2-4 pm. Class will be taught by Krav
Maga Instructor, Paula Meyers. Meyers is also
a Rochester native and the daughter of Mary
Ellen Meyers!
Staff and volunteers are to observe the twoworker rule, meaning they should not be in
an isolated setting with children or youth
without another staff or volunteer (unrelated)
present. This is both at Hosanna and away
from church at outings or church events.
Krav Maga is an Israeli system of self-defense
and tactics that was developed for special
forces, but is the best self defense system for
civilians, women, and children. Meyers has
taken great interest in teaching this self
defense system and is 1 of 6 people in the
world to successfully complete the first ever
Warrior's Quest Challenge hosted by the
International Krav Maga Federation.

Hosanna Empty Nest Sitter Service
Friday, April 8th 6pm to 10pm
The sitter service has been a great
success for both kids and sitters.
The next date is Friday, April 8th
from 6:00 – 10:00 pm. Just fill out
a registration form at the Welcome Center
and place in basket provided. Information
requested is:
Children’s names, ages, health issues and
emergency contact information
Attention: We are looking for people to
help, please consider sitting once or twice a
year. It is a great experience and a way to
meet some of Christ’s youngest gifts to

Discipleship /Fellowship Ministries
A $10 per person donation is requested. In
recognition of April being National Sexual
Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse
Prevention Month, your requested donations
will be passed along to Mission 21.
Hosanna's goal is to continue to keep
volunteers, children and youth safe.
Implementing some basic safety practices
will help provide such an environment.

Hilltoppers—April 12th at Noon
All those 55+ or who are retired are invited to
a catered lunch and a program put on by the
staff or outside speakers on the second
Tuesday of the month at noon. Please sign
up at the Welcome Center to let us know you

Hosanna Women – Conference Event
Thursday April 21, 2016
All women are invited to attend the Zumbro
River Conference Spring Event on Thursday,
April 21; 4:45pm – 8:30pm at Faith Lutheran
Church in Dodge Center.
The evening
begins with registration, time for
fellowship with other women and to
browse displays.
The 5:30pm
dinner is followed by a brief
business meeting, an opportunity to
hear Mr. Garwin McNeilus speak on women
and global mission and then a closing
worship/communion service. There is a $12
registration fee which includes dinner. More
information and a sign-up can be found at the

Attention One and All!!!
Hosanna Fellowship Opportunity
It is nearly beyond comprehension; however
another stupendous fellowship activity has
dropped in our laps. At 2:00
PM on Sunday, April 24th, the
Rochester Civic Theatre will be
presenting the musical “Mary
Poppins”. Mary Poppins was
nominated for seven Tony
Awards including best musical. This musical
features the original music of
Richard and Robert Sherman
with additional music provided by
George Stiles and Anthony
Drewe. We have been able to
obtain numerous tickets to this
musical
highlight
of
Rochester’s 2016 theatre
calendar . If you attended and
enjoyed (how could you not)
other RCT musicals such as
“The Rocky Horror Show”,
“Sweeny Todd”, or “The Producers” or even if you
didn’t, you will really enjoy this musical. I can

Thank You to Cast and Crew of Heroes of the Faith
Thank you to the cast and crew for their dedication and
commitment to making Hosanna’s 25th intergenerational
musical, Heroes of the Faith, another quality presentation of
Bible stories. You were a blessing to the congregation and to
the residents of Samaritan Bethany. Also, thank you to those
who filled out the “Who is your hero of the faith?” forms. They
were very meaningful to read and made us think of the faith
heroes in our own lives. Heroes of the Faith reminded all of
us that we can be true heroes of the
faith. We can all be champions of the
faith who serve God all of our days.
God chose heroes of the faith like
Moses, Deborah, Elijah, David, the
disciples, Paul and Lydia. God has
also chosen us to be faithful
followers, dedicated leaders and
trusting disciples who share the good
news of Jesus Christ.

ELCA World Hunger's
40 Days of Giving Results
Thank you to all the members who
participated in the many activities and
donated to our 40 Days of Giving for ELCA
World Hunger. Here are the results of the
campaign: $114 was collected from the
Super Bowl Challenge, $107 from
Cinnamon Roll sales, $820 from Good Gifts
Grams, $1,375 from World Hunger
envelopes, $303.31 from the Piggy Banks,
and $250.00 from Lenten Soup Suppers for
a total of $2,969.31.

off to a strong start! It is
through your dedication

are able to raise the food
and funds needed to keep
the doors open and lights on year after

Family Mission Trip to Madison
Meeting April 25, 2016
Hosanna’s Family Mission Trip to Madison, WI
this summer from July 10 – 13, 2016 is all set.
Twenty people and 9 families will be
participating. We’ll be holding a meeting on
Monday, April 25 at 6:30 pm to go over
paperwork and talk about expectations and
what to bring along on the trip. Final payments
need to be made by May 1. The cost is $129
per person which includes food and lodging (in
a church). We’ll talk about how the fundraising
done by our youth can be used for this trip.

Prayer Shawls
April 11 & 22
The Prayer Shawl team meets twice a month,
once in the evening and once during the day.
Meetings are on the 2nd Monday at 6:30 pm
and on the 4th Friday at 1:00 pm. If you like to
knit or crotchet or would like to learn, you may
join this caring ministry at any time. Please
contact Carolyn Dahl at [email protected]
with questions. Members may also stop by the
office to pick up a prayer shawl for family or
friends in need of prayer and comfort.

Join Hosanna’s Community
Garden Team!
Spring is officially here and it will soon be time
to get our community gardens tilled and
planted. We currently have 3 – 4 garden plots
that can be tilled up and planted in May. Since
the Essex Park garden plots are closed this
year, 2 or 3 of Hosanna’s plots could be used
as family gardens. We’d just ask that families
donate part of the
produce
they
harvest to Channel
One.
Hosanna’s Adopt-A-Highway
The snow season is over and we had very
little snow shoveling and
corresponding trips to your
chiropractor for that bad back.
It is unfortunate if you could not
see your chiropractor until next
winter.
However, I have a
solution, you can help clean Hosanna’s
section of Highway 52 east of Apache mall.
The walking, bending, and lifting will almost
guarantee that you will continue an intimate
relationship with your chiropractor during
the summer and fall. What do you think!!!!
How about it!!!! The first cleanup day is
Saturday, April 30th at 9 am. We will be
done by 10:30 am or maybe
before.

Hosanna’s Pantry
April 22 & 23
All are invited to work at Hosanna’s Pantry on
Friday, April 22 and/or Saturday, April 23.
Working together as a family to help provide
food to families in need is a wonderful way to
share God’s love. This is also a good activity
for youth who need service hours for school.
There’s something for all ages to do. You can
help with the pantry set up on Friday morning
at 10:00 am. Or you can help greet families,
help them shop, carry out groceries or clean
up on Saturday from 9:00—11:30 am. There’s
a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center or you
may

Hello,
I attended the “RENEW 2016” the Southeast Minnesota leadership
conference in Owatonna on February 28th.
This years theme was
Developing a Culture of Healthy Leadership. Bishop Steve Delzer kicked
off the afternoon with some information about his dream for pastors and
congregations.
He spoke about Annual Reviews, and Continuing
Education, and how he would love to see every congregation engaging in annual reviews with
their pastors with a priority on continuing education. Details can be found on this web page.

Rev. David Knox discussed the 2017 Southeast Minnesota Task Force on Compensation and
Benefits This task force is evaluating pastoral salaries and benefits. A survey was made
available to fill out on our way out, and more details will be shared at the Synod Assembly in
May.
President’s Message
Sara Brook talked about Young Adults in Global Mission and her 1 year mission trip to Rwanda.
I attended a breakout session titled “Council as a Ministry Partner” lead by Rev. Kristi Mitchell
from Grace Lutheran in Waseca. We examined the key functions of the Council in the church
with respect to Governance and Management, and what this may look like in the future. We
used 2 case studies to help inspire conversation. It was interesting to me to see the number of
churches where the Pastor has no voice and no vote on the council. Several people talked
about ministry teams, while others talked about 3 hour long council meeting where very little
gets done. It was a refreshing feeling to know how well our Council and Ministry teams work
together to get things done.

Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna,
We all need a place to go. A place we can call home. Our homes provide
that place for refuge when we have completed our day of work or school.
In the same way the church provides the place of refuge or “sanctuary” for
the people of God. The most significant event happening in the life of our
congregation is the assembled people of God in worship.
We are called and sent as the church to reach out in the name of Christ to feed the hungry, to
clothe those who are in need, provide hospitals and personnel to tend to the sick, educate our
members, and the list goes on as over sixty ministry teams serve the needs of others in
Jesus’ name. But the one action of the body of Christ that is unique is our time together in
worship.
The church is the place of the people doing the “work of the people” which is the definition of
liturgy. The gathered people is the basic symbol of the Christian life.
Hosanna is the baptized assembly of believers that worships and ministers from 2815 57 th St
NW in Rochester, Minnesota. We come together for a purpose; to participate actively in a
word and sacrament as we worship our God.
The presence of Christ in our midst prompts a response of praise. Praise of faith expressed in
speech and music. Worship is the joyful recognition of God; that God is a God who loves us
enough to send his son, Jesus to give us the gifts of salvation and eternal life. In thankful
response we praise God in worship.
May we gather regularly to praise God, receive the sacraments and enjoy the community of
God’s people who come together; the community of Hosanna Lutheran Church.
